Ronald Tipton is accused of participating in a series of retail thefts across Northeast Florida that investigators say involved more than $20,000 worth of stolen LEGO products.
YULEE, Fla. — An investigation by the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office into LEGO thefts at a Target store in Yulee has led authorities to what they describe as an organized retail theft operation extending across Northeast Florida.
According to the sheriff’s office, Tipton — referred to by investigators as the “LEGO Bandit” — and other individuals allegedly targeted high-priced LEGO sets at retail stores before leaving without paying.
Investigators say Tipton was responsible for three Nassau County thefts: one on Aug. 18, another on Aug. 26 and a third on Sept. 12. The LEGO sets taken in those incidents had a combined value exceeding $3,000, authorities said.
On Sept. 15, Tipton allegedly entered a Walmart, took several LEGO sets and was confronted by store security before fleeing. A deputy later found him and tried to take him into custody, but Tipton allegedly struck the detective’s arm with the door of a U-Haul and drove away, the sheriff’s office said.
Deputies then pursued the U-Haul, with the chase ending near Sadler Road in Fernandina Beach. Authorities said they ultimately disabled the vehicle by pinning it against a tree in a CVS parking lot. A second suspect, Jessica Underwood, was also arrested. Inside the U-Haul, deputies recovered methamphetamine, crack cocaine and fentanyl, according to NCSO.
As the investigation continued, detectives linked Tipton to retail theft cases throughout the First Coast that allegedly involved more than $20,000 in stolen LEGO merchandise.
“What may start as a single retail theft can sometimes uncover something much bigger,” the sheriff’s office said. “Our detectives followed the evidence, connected the dots and worked with our law enforcement partners to put a suspect involved in these thefts behind bars. We will continue working with our retail partners and other agencies to hold organized thieves accountable.”
Tipton faces charges that include aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, aggravated fleeing, coordinating others in retail theft exceeding $3,000, dealing in stolen property, possession of controlled substances and driving under the influence.
