Kiwi rally ace Emma Gilmour will shatter the glass ceiling in 2022 when she becomes the first female to race as a factory driver for McLaren Racing.
Gilmour has secured a fulltime drive in Extreme E – a global championship that tackles climate change and gender diversity during its all-electric SUVs off-road series.
Gilmour’s signing was announced at the COP 26 UN Climate Change Conference – hosted by Prince Charles – as world leaders gather in Glasgow for the crucial summit at Kelvingrove Museum, overnight Thursday (NZ time).
McLaren Racing, who will join Extreme E in 2022 for its second season, was founded by New Zealand racing legend, engineer and innovator Bruce McLaren in 1963.
No Kiwi has been signed to the iconic McLaren brand as a factory driver since the late great Denny Hulme retired from F1 in 1974 and until Gilmour, no female has ever driven as a works racer for McLaren.
“To be their first female driver … It gives me goosebumps,” Gilmour told Stuff.
