Remembered events can only be a kaleidoscope of a senior’s moments. Higgledy-piggledy, changing through time with each iteration, stories evolve, refined and re-shaped with each telling.
My memories are not chronologically linked. Nor thematically. They’re an undifferentiated mix of family, politics and events.
It was never part of the grand plan, but I’m now living only four or five kilometres away from where I spent my first 10 years of life.
Melbourne is a different city and may as well be in a different country. This only adds to the difficulty of reconstructing a reliable chronology of my life.
I was born in 1941. My father Frank was discharged from the army early in 1944, on medical grounds that included anxiety.
By the time the war ended Melbourne was a maelstrom of unemployment, shortages and strikes.
“Pig Iron Bob” was painted in white on railway viaducts and factory walls —a reminder of the uprising against the then-Attorney-General Robert Menzies, who allowed the sale of Australian crude iron known as pig iron to Japan.
Relief and optimism were mixed with new social upheaval. Women running key jobs were being replaced by returning diggers.
Maimed men were common on the streets. And the Americans stationed here were leaving.
Meet Max Gillies Wife Louise Adler
Max Gillies has been married to a renowned publisher, Louise Adler, for 40 years to date. They initially exchanged wedding vows in a private married in 1981. Following their marriage, they settled down in Melbourne, Victoria.
Talking about Max’s wife, Louise is one of the prominent public figures in the history of Australian publishing as of now. She began her career as editor-in-chief of the Australian Book Review in 1988.
Gillies then served as the lead publisher at Reed Books. She further joined a daily newspaper, The Age as an art and entertainment editor. Likewise, she also became the deputy director of academic and research at the Victorian College of the Arts.

Furthermore, Mrs. Gillies ran a book publishing arm of Melbourne University Publishing as a CEO and main publisher. Back in January 2019, she resigned from her designation to serve as a publisher-at-large for Hachette Australia.
Louise then became a board member of the Monash University Council. She also served as a board director at Melbourne International Arts Festival and Australian Centre for Contemporary Art.

In 2012, the MLC board, which Adler led, controversially suspended the job of Rosa Storelli, the university’s then-principal. Many students, parents, and alumni were outraged by the dismissal, and by 2017, the board members had changed the majority of decisions.
Louise is now serving as a chair of the board at Methodist Ladies College in Kew, Melbourne. For her outstanding service in Australian literature, the government of Australia honored her with the order of Australia in 2008.
Max Gillies Family
Max Irvine Gillies was born on 16th November 1941. Moreover, his parents, Doris and Frank, supported and encouraged him to pursue a career in the arts of acting. Likewise, he grew up with his younger brother, Don Gillies, in Melbourne, Victoria.

Gillies then studied art teaching at Frankston Teachers College. He also featured in various theatre productions, School for Scandal and Summer of the Seventeenth Doll, alongside Kerry Dwyer in 1964.
Max then enrolled at Monash University in 1963. Later, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Acting degree in 1966. He also studied secondary art teaching from the University of Melbourne’s Melbourne Teachers’ College.
How Many Children does Max have?
Max Gillies is proud to become the father of two adult children, Stefanie Gillis and Elana (nee Gillis) Schroeder. Both of his daughters are now happily married to their beloved ones. He is also blessed with two adorable grandchildren.
On the other hand, Max’s older daughter, Elana, is a global benefits solution leader at AKT Global consultancy group. Meanwhile, his younger daughter, Stefanie, is the founding director and CEO of physical fitness center, Gutzy.
