Julio Vaqueiro Borbolla – Health Journalism Fellow

Julio Vaqueiro is a Mexican Journalist. He’s the anchor of Telemundo’s morning news show in Los Angeles. He also collaborates with MSNBC, covering news on the Latino community, migration and Mexico. In addition, Vaqueiro also writes a weekly article for Mexico’s El Universal newspaper website, one of the most influential in Latin America. Throughout his career, Vaqueiro has covered major news events including the Mexican Drug War, Hugo Chavez’s illness, Mexico’s Presidential Elections on 2012, Pope’s visit to Mexico and the London Olympic Games, among others.
Two times Emmy and one time Golden Mike nominee, Julio Vaqueiro has a BSBM Bachelors in Communications from Anahuac University in Mexico City. Vaqueiro joined NBC-Telemundo on 2011 as a correspondent in Mexico serving in English and Spanish.

In the fields of Calif.’s Ventura County, some workers only speak Mixteco. The cultural and language barriers make it difficult for them to access health care. Reporter Julio Vaqueiro Borbolla tells the story of how he went about the difficult task of gaining their trust and telling their stories.
Elvia works as a medical interpreter in the Ventura County. Today, she is accompanying the occupational therapist Rachel Pile, who speaks only English. Every Monday, they work on 2-year-old Miguel’s therapy. His mother, Eulalia, only speaks and understands Mixteco.
An estimated 165,000 indigenous Mexican immigrants live and work in the fields of California. Some 80% of them do not speak English or Spanish. This cultural and language barrier makes it difficult to treat mental illnesses in the community.
An Emmy award winning journalist, Vaquiero has covered breaking stories from the emergency at the US-Mexico border to the War on Drugs and the Venezuelan crisis. He has secured exclusive interviews with 2020 U.S. presidential candidates including Senator Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren and other distinguished world leaders such as Juan Guaidó. Before joining Telemundo Network in 2016, he was a co-anchor for Telemundo 52 Los Angeles/KVEA from 2013 to 2017. Vaqueiro also served as a Telemundo news correspondent in Mexico for “Al Rojo Vivo con María Celeste” and has collaborated with MSNBC as a contributor. Before moving to the United States, Vaqueiro was a news writer, reporter and anchor at Efekto TV in Mexico City. He earned his B.A. in communications from Universidad Anáhuac del Norte in Mexico City.
