Where Is NBC5 Co-anchor Now, Is She Leaving? What Happened To Meredith Land – The popular KXAS-TV anchor is stepping down from her primetime position after nine years to spend more time with her husband, Xan, and two young children.
She’ll continue to co-anchor NBC5 News Monday through Friday at 5 and 6 p.m.
“Every night, I’ll be able to have dinner with my family, help with homework, go to football and soccer games, and just be a part of it all,” Land said in an interview on Thursday. “Instead of just FaceTime, I’ll be able to spend evenings with my family in real time.”
She explained, “There’s a whole other world after dark that I haven’t been a part of in well over a decade.”
KXAS-TV (NBC5) is the media partner of The Dallas Morning News.
Land, who joined NBC5 in 2003, replaced Jane McGarry in February 2010 to become co-anchor of the 10 p.m. newscasts with Brian Curtis.
It’s an unusual move for someone, who at 42, is considered to be at the sweet spot of a TV career. She calls her current gig “the Holy Grail of local broadcasting.”
“But I’ll never regret putting my family first,” Land said. “I’ve done this primetime show a long time. Women are afraid to lean a little closer to home life when they feel that pull because they don’t want to lose all that they’ve built with their career.
“I’ve made a big sacrifice over the years to get to this place. But I’m very grateful to work for a company that not only says it supports women but actually does.”
There was another component in Land’s decision to recalibrate. She’s laser-focused on building her digital presence. “This is about family balance, but it’s also about taking a hard look at where people really are. And I want to be part of that space.”
To those who think she was pushed out, Land says think again.
“This was entirely my idea,” she said. “Men can dip in and out of their careers, no problem. Women? It’s a lot harder to take the leap. Women really need to stick together and support each other, because it’s still tough out there. No joke.
“It’s empowering for women to take control of what they want in life beyond the boardroom or TV station.”
“Over the past 16 years, Meredith has done great work for the station,” said John Stone, NBC5 vice president of news. “We understand the family challenges of working the late news schedule, and are glad Meredith will now have better work-life balance.”
Stone said the station is in the process of determining who will replace Land at 10 p.m.

Meredith co-hosts NBC 5 News weekdays at 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. She is also a journalist. She has been with NBC 5 since October 2003. Prior to joining NBC 5, Meredith was the morning anchor and senior investigative reporter for the NBC affiliate in Charleston, South Carolina for four years.
