Who is Charlie Morton?- Early Life and College
A professional baseball player, Charlie Morton is a native of Flemington, New Jersey, the United States of America. Born as Charlie Alfred Morton, he is the son of Chip and Jeanne Morton.
Morton’s father is a former Penn State basketball player and also works as an accountant
Likewise, Charlie’s grandfather is also a former baseball player who played for the Philadelphia Athletics farm system. Unlike his parents, there is no information on his siblings.
Growing up in Trumbull, Connecticut, Morton played in a little league with future significant leaguers pitchers Craig Breslow and infielder Jamie D’Antona.
Since his childhood, Charlie has idolized Derek Jeter and Roger Clemens. As for his education, Morton attended Joel Barwlo High School, located in Redding, Connecticut. He graduated later in 2002.
Professional Career- Atlanta Braves and Pittsburgh Pirates
After playing in the little league, Morton finally got the major break when the Atlanta Braves picked him in the third round, 95th overall at the 2002 Major League Baseball draft.
With this, Charlie started his professional career in 2002 with the GCL Braves. The following year, he played for the Danville Braves and the Rome Braves in 2004 and 2005.
Likewise, in 2006, Charlie pitched for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans and the next year for the Mississippi Braves. Finally, on November 20, 2007, the Braves added Morton to their 40-man roster.
Because of it, Morton made his major league debut on June 14, 2008, in a match against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. With three runs in six innings, Charlie earned his first major league win.
Three months later, Morton finally pitched a complete game against the Chicago Cubs.
By the end of the 2009 season, Charlie has 18 stars with five wins and nine losses, a 4.55 ERA, 97 innings pitched, 62 strikeouts, 40 walks, seven home runs, five-hit batsmen, .276 average against, and 1.46 WHIP.
The year 2010 was a series of ups and downs for Morton. After starting badly for the Pirates, Charlie delivered a promising performance on April 30 against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Even in a loss, he strikes out 8 in six innings and allowed only six runs.

However, after dropping his record in coming seasons, Morton was finally dropped out and assigned Indianapolis Indians to the Pirates Triple-A affiliate. Before he started with the Indians, Charlie spoke about his last seasons.
“I was pressing. I wasn’t being myself on the mound those last couple times I went out there in Pittsburgh. There was so much going on in my mind. At the end of last year, I finished strong, I got a glimpse of what I could do, truly, in the big leagues, going out there and going deep into games, being competitive being someone who was pretty good.”
To this, he added,
“I wanted to be out there for myself and because I care about this team and organization. At the same time, though, after that last one, that last start, because I care about these guys is why, exactly, I knew I couldn’t go back out there again.”
Contrary to his past season, 2011 proved to be the best season for Morton, where he earned the club’s Breakout Player of the Year.
That year, he also underwent successful hip surgery where he had to repair a torn labrum. After being out for 4-6 months, Morton returned in the 2013 season in a shutout against the Cincinnati Reds.
Charlie Morton’s Later Clubs- Why did Charlie Morton leave the Astros?
Charlie started his 2015 season with the Philadelphia Phillies after being traded for David Whitehead. However, his season came to an abrupt halt a year later following his hamstring injury against the Milwaukee Brewers.
After missing the rest of the 2016 season, Morton was moved to Houston Astros, where he signed a two-year contract worth $14 million.
On October 16, 2017, Morton started playing for the Astros and even became a part of their World Series win.
During the world series, Charlie began Game 4 and pitched well over 6.1 innings, with one earned run on three hits and seven strikeouts. Moreover, Morton was credited as a winning pitcher.
However, the happiness did not last long as three years later; the Astros were accused of breaking MLB rules during the 2017 season.
Amidst the rumors, Charlie admitted to knowing the rules violations and regrets not doing anything about it.
Despite this, Charlie continued playing for the Astros, setting a personal record of 14 strikeouts over seven innings in a 6-1 victory against the Texas Rangers.
At the end of 2018, Charlie signed with the Tampa Bay Rays to a two-year contract worth $30 million. Likewise, he made a debut for the team on March 29, 2019, in a match against the Astros.
