He lived in Riverside County and was charged with the murder of his former girlfriend. When he was apprehended, he pled not guilty to the offense in a Whittier courtroom.
At her Whittier home, he smothered his high school sweetheart to death. At the time of the crime, Fleming was considered to be in her mid-twenties, around 25 years old.
According to investigators, DNA on a cigarette butt found on the kitchen counter matched Gutierrez’s DNA. A warrant was issued in 1993 to draw his blood for testing.
They supported high-tech DNA matching since it might also match tens of thousands of Latinos. Davis took a deep breath after learning that Gutierrez had been murdered.
“It’s still as if it’s not real to me,” Davis Fleming remarked.
She was a woman with a lot going for her. She had everything in her life in order…She was at the peak of her career.”
Gutierrez is still in prison serving his sentence. Although the specifics of his sentencing are unknown, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of release for murder.

Christie Fleming was found dead on the kitchen floor of her condo, which she had only recently purchased six months before. Davis, her sister, was the first to discover her body.
Davis went to her condo to check on her after she missed a pre-Day Mother’s breakfast. On the 13th of May, 1989, she discovered her body.
A burnt-out cigarette butt was found on the kitchen counter, and undamaged cigarette ash was found on her bedroom floor during the examination. The cigarette butt became significant evidence later on.

Gutierrez and Fleming had a terrific relationship at first, but it eventually ended. The schoolmate’s romance did not end in love; rather, it ended in death and murder.
Christie’s parents had divorced when she was a child. She did, however, have a sister, Rhonda Davis, with whom she had a close relationship. She was the one who discovered the crime first.
