Rock, who was presenting the award for ‘Best Documentary,’ had just finished a set of jokes in which he mocked Smith’s wife, Jada, by comparing her to GI Jane.
Smith, who appeared to be laughing at first, stormed up to the stage and slapped a stunned Rock, who managed to stay upright after the assault.
Smith walked up to the stage shortly after Rock made the joke and slapped him across the face.
Back in his seat, Smith continued to threaten Rock with expletives, telling him to “keep my wife’s name out of your mouth.”
The audience was taken aback by Smith’s seemingly out-of-control response, which sparked a flurry of memes on social media within seconds.
