Jean-Louis Trintignant was a racing racer, actor, and director from France. He made his stage debut in 1951 and went on to become one of the most talented French dramatic performers of the postwar era, featuring in a number of classic European films.

He rose to popularity during the French New Wave period, with critical and financial success in & God Created Woman (1956), followed by a star-making romantic role in A Man and a Woman (1957). (1966).

In a statement sent by his agency, his wife Mariane Hoepfner Trintignant announced that Jean Louis Trintignant died “peacefully, of old age, this morning at home in the Gard, surrounded by his loved ones.”

Trintignant said in 2018 that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer and that he will not pursue treatment. In November 2021, it was reported that he was losing his sight and his health was deteriorating.

Mr. Trintignant appeared in films by Krzysztof Kieslowski, Costa-Gavras, and Bernardo Bertolucci, including Three Colors: Red, Z, and The Conformist. His life, however, was marred by two tragedies.

Pauline, his second daughter, died at the age of nine months from sudden infant death syndrome. In 2003, his eldest daughter Marie was murdered by rock star Bertrand Cantat.

Trintignant was born and raised in the world of motor racing, so he was an obvious choice for the leading part of a racecar driver in Claude Lelouch’s 1966 film A Man and a Woman. In June 2007, he was involved in a motorcycle accident and suffered a leg injury.

Jean Louis Trintignant died this morning.

Trintignant was born in Piolenc, Vaucluse, to industrialist Raoul Trintignant and Claire Trintignant. Trintignant traveled to Paris at the age of twenty to study theatre and made his theatrical debut in 1951.

He went on to become one of the most outstanding French performers of the postwar era. After appearing in various stage works in the early 1950s, he made his first motion picture debut in 1955, and the following year he became a star opposite Brigitte Bardot in Roger Vadim’s And God Created Woman.

Trintignant announced his retirement from acting on July 20, 2018, but in March 2019, he agreed to star in Claude Lelouch’s film Les plus belles annees d’une vie, a sequel to Un homme et une woman.

A man and a woman, both in their twenties. In January 2021, he agreed to reprise his role in a new Lelouch film. In January 2022, the film L’amour c’est mieux que la vie will be released in France.

Stéphane Audran, an actress, was Jean Louis Trintignant’s first wife. Nadine Marquand, his second wife, was an actress, screenwriter, and director.

Vincent, Pauline (who died of crib death in 1969), and Marie Trintignant (21 January 1962 – 1 August 2003) were their three children. Marie debuted in La terrazza with her father at the age of 17 and went on to become a great actor.

In 2000, he married his third wife Marianne Hoepfner.
