In 1975, he was the first African-American to compete in the Masters Tournament, but he didn’t make it past the first round.
After winning the 1974 Monsanto Open, Elder was invited to the event.
Elder was a four-time PGA Tour winner who created history by teeing it up for the first two rounds at Augusta National in 1975. In total, he played in five more Masters and 34 major tournaments, finishing in the top 25 in seven of them.
