He was regarded as one of the best guitarists in the United Kingdom. He rose to prominence after forming The Humblebums with Billy Connolly and Gerry Rafferty. Furthermore, Connolly co-founded the band with Tam Harvey in 1965. They performed in pubs and clubs throughout Glasgow, Scotland, most notably at the Old Scotia Bar.
The band was active from 1965 to 1971, with their first album, First Collection of Merry Melodies, being released in 1965. In February 1969, the album was released.
