According to the Associated Press, officers detained members of the white supremacist group Patriot Front on June 11, 2022, after they were discovered crammed in the back of a U-Haul truck with riot gear near an Idaho pride celebration.

LGBTQ activists have argued that division and a combative political climate are putting their community at risk after they were jailed. Thomas Russo was part of the group which got arrested.

Thomas Ryan Russo, 23, of Grapevine, Texas, was among those arrested on misdemeanor charges of conspiracy to riot. He was identified as the white supremacist Patriot Front leader.

The Southern Poverty Law Center characterized him as a 23-year-old who created the group “Patriot Front” after the deadly “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia in 2017.

Officers received information that people were loading into a “little army” U-Haul vehicle at a hotel car park in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and arrested Patriot Front members, according to police.

Thomas Russo along with 30 others, who were arrested in Idaho, has been charged with misdemeanor charges of conspiracy to riot. His photos and mugshots have been released by the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office.

According to videos of the arrests shared by police and on social media, the group gathered to riot around the small northern Idaho town, wearing Patriot front patches and insignia on their hats, as well as some T-shirts that stated: “Reclaim America.”

According to George Washington University researcher John Lewis, who specializes in domestic violent extremism, the Patriot Front is a white supremacist neo-Nazi organization whose members see black Americans, Jews, and LGBTQ persons as adversaries.

Police discovered riot gear, a smoke grenade, shin guards, and shields inside a van near a park where the North Idaho Pride Alliance was conducting a Pride at Park event in Coeur d’Alene on Saturday. Chief Lee White of the Alene Police Department stated.

At least 11 states, including Washington, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Colorado, South Dakota, Illinois, Wyoming, Virginia, and Arkansas, were among those detained.
