Atlanta Entrepreneur Shot Outside Son's Preschool By Wife's Alleged Secret Lover

0

On November 18, 2010, the affluent community of Dunwoody, Georgia was sent reeling when local family man and entrepreneur Rusty Sneiderman, 36, was gunned down outside his son’s preschool.

It was an “execution style” slaying, Billy Grogan, Chief of Police for Dunwoody Police Department, told The Real Murders of Atlanta, airing Fridays at 9/8c on Oxygen.

Sneiderman was rushed to the hospital, where he later died. As investigators canvassed the scene, several witnesses told the same account.

Right after Sneiderman dropped off his son, a man walked up to him. Without a word, he “began shooting,” said Kelly Boyer, a former detective with Dunwoody PD. “Then he gets in a silver minivan and takes off.”

The Search for Rusty Sneiderman’s Disguised Killer

The shooter was wearing a ski hat and had a beard. Witnesses said that he could have “been wearing some type of disguise,” said Grogan.

At the same time, police processed the crime scene. “We collected four shell casings,” said Boyer. Surveillance footage was sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

With few clues to go on, detectives took a closer look into Sneiderman’s personal and professional inner circles. They learned that Sneiderman grew up in Cleveland. He and his wife, Andrea, then 35, met at Indiana University before he went to Harvard Business School.

Job opportunities drew them to Atlanta, where they were raising two young children. He had an expertise in business, while she worked at GE. They were involved in philanthropic causes and their synagogue.

“With the victim being Jewish, we thought that it could have been an anti-Semitic attack,” said Curtis Clifton, patrol lieutenant with Dunwoody Police Department.

As law enforcement investigated that angle, a GBI sketch artist’s drawing of the suspect was shared with the media. The sketch led to a number of tips, including one from a woman who spotted an individual closely resembling the man in the sketch. It was a dead end. “He was a military guy … with an alibi,” said Boyer.

Two days into the investigation, Sneiderman’s family offered a $10,000 reward “to help garner some interest and possible leads in the case,” said Grogan.

Detectives circled back to the victim’s widow. They asked her if the couple had financial or marital problems and if anyone would want to hurt her husband. They also inquired if Sneiderman was having an affair.

“He was a model husband. There was nothing like that going on,” said journalist Christian Boone.

Police asked Andrea if she was involved in any romantic relationships outside her marriage. She said that her boss, Hemy Neuman, had “hit on her, but she quickly shut it down,” said Boyer.

As they worked the case, investigators learned that Sneiderman had bad blood with a former employer — a learning center for children that sold franchises. Sneiderman was the chief financial officer but left after discovered iffy inner workings.

Detectives interviewed the company owners, who had solid alibis. “There was motive there, but they were cleared,” said Boyer.

A week after the shooting, detectives were able to view the surveillance footage from the preschool’s parking lot. They saw that the getaway vehicle was a silver Kia Sedona. From windshield stickers they determined that it was an Enterprise rental van.

Hemy Neuman, Andrea Sneiderman’s Boss, Becomes a Suspect

Law enforcement tracked down the getaway van and processed it for fingerprints and DNA evidence. They collected fibers that appeared to be from a fake beard, said Grogan.

Investigators learned that the van had been rented a day before the murder and returned hours after Sneiderman was shot. The person who rented the van was 48-year-old Hemy Neuman, Andrea Sneiderman’s boss.

Detectives recalled that “Andrea had mentioned that he kind of made a pass at her,” said Grogan.

Was Rusty Sneiderman’s Murder a Hate Crime?

The investigation focused on Neuman, a corporate scientist who was married with children. He was brought in for questioning and asked to account for his whereabouts at the time of the murder.

Neuman said that he was at work all day. He also said that he was friends with Andrea and that he was attracted to her and wanted to develop that, according to investigators.

“When Neuman said that we started thinking the motive of the murder was love,” said Clifton.

When he was directly asked if he killed Rusty Sneiderman, Neuman didn’t answer. “He did not deny killing Rusty, even when they accused him of it,” said Grogan.

Hemy Neuman Arrested for Rusty Sneiderman’s Murder

Although Neuman didn’t confess, his link to the killer’s getaway vehicle gave police enough evidence to arrest him for the murder.

Investigators built their case. Andrea said she had no idea why Neuman would kill her husband, but GE surveillance camera footage revealed that the day of the shooting Neuman left the building and drove away in the silver minivan, according to investigators.

The case was strong, but police still needed to recover the murder weapon. Using phone records to determine who Neuman had been in touch with, police learned that he’d bought a 40-caliber handgun on Oct. 31. The seller was able to give police a shell casing. Ballistics confirmed it was a match with the Sneiderman murder weapon, said Boyer.

“We tried to figure out why in the world Hemy would kill Andrea’s husband,” said Donald Geary, managing asst. D.A. for Gwinnett County. “We knew she took business trips and things just started adding up.”

Detectives tracked down a witness who had seen saw Andrea and Neuman at a restaurant. “She provided us with the statement that there was definitely a sexual tension that she picked up on between the two,” said Boyer.

“There was constant interaction between them on their personal phones,” said Clifton. “This all stopped the day of the homicide.”

“At this point in the investigation, we know that Andrea wasn’t totally truthful with us,” said Grogan. Was that because she played a part in the murder or simply embarrassed about the affair? Andrea declined to speak with police.

Hemy Neuman’s defense team claims insanity

In February 2012, Neuman’s trial began. His defense team opened with a startling admission that Neuman pulled the trigger because he was insane.

Neuman’s team tried to “prove that he was not in his right mind and that he’d been influenced by Andrea,” said Boone. “He was in love with her and that obsession drove him to kill Rusty.”

Geary’s response? “I just laughed,” he said. “He knew what he was doing. He had an objective. He worked out the mission plan and he executed the mission. Period.”

Rusty Sneiderman Had Ambitions Ahead of His Death

Neuman never took the stand. But prosecutors called Andrea Sneiderman. “By putting her on the stand as they did, they were able to lock her into her story about what happened and her relationship with Hemy,” said Grogan.

She maintained under oath that she discouraged her boss’ advances. “Did she want her husband killed? I don’t know,” said Boone. “But did she want out of her marriage? It seems that way.”

Hemy Neuman Is Convicted, Andrea Sneiderman Charged

Neuman was ultimately convicted and sentenced to life in prison.

In August 2012, Andrea Sneiderman was charged with murder, lying under oath and hindering an investigation. Shortly before her trial began, prosecutors dropped the murder charge due to a lack of evidence.

In August 2013, Andrea was convicted of perjury for statements she made during Neuman’s trial and for obstructing our investigation, according to Grogan.

Following her emotional appeal to the judge, she was sentenced to five years. She ended up serving 22 months.

The stories are true-crime shockers, and evidence that Los Angeles is no stranger to violent murders. In the 1970s and ’80s, L.A. earned the notorious nickname “serial killer central, according to a Toronto Sun report.

“There were multiple serial killers operating at one time,” Joni Johnston, a forensic psychologist and author of Serial Killers: 101 Questions True Crime Fans Ask, told Oxygen.com. “It’s a huge city that’s been called the city of dreams.” The collision of dreamers and predators came with a horrific body count.

Before the debut of The Real Murders of Los Angeles, take a look at five of the most murderous fiends to haunt the City of Angels.

Most Notorious Los Angeles Serial Killers

Richard Ramirez

Ramirez was a serial rapist and murderer who rampaged through Southern California from April 1984 to August 1985. During his reign of terror, Ramirez, who claimed to be inspired by Satan and left occult symbols as a calling card, became known as the “Night Stalker,” a reference to the time of day he committed his crimes. Ramirez used guns, knives, and hammers and was connected to 14 slayings of women and men, children and octogenarians. He was found guilty of 13 of them. “His notoriety attracted a slew of groupies,” Johnston told Oxygen.com. He died while on death row in 2013 at age 53.

William Bonin

Known as the Highway Killer, Bonin used the intricate network of Southern California highways and roads as a hunting and dumping ground. After luring victims — hitchhikers, schoolboys, and male prostitutes — into his vehicle, he would overpower and bind them before bludgeoning and torturing them. At times, he had an accomplice. Bonin was convicted of killing, sexually assaulting and torturing 14 boys and young men between May 1979 and June 1980, per California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation records. In 1982, Bonin received the death penalty for 10 L.A. murders, and in 1983 was hit with a second death penalty for four slayings in Orange County. On February 23, 1996 at San Quentin State Prison, Bonin, 49, became the first California convict to die by injection, the Associated Press reported.

Hillside Strangler

Kenneth Bianchi and Angelo Buono were convicted of abducting, raping, torturing, and murdering 10 young women and girls ages 12 to 28, People reported. Bianchi killed two more women alone in Washington state. During their L.A. killing spree in the late 1970s, Bianchi and his cousin Buono were labeled with the singular murderous moniker the Hillside Strangler because the media assumed the crimes committed in the Hollywood Hills were by one individual. They posed as off-duty police officers to lure their victims to their deaths. Bianchi was handed multiple life sentences, and Buono was sentenced to life in prison without the chance of parole. Buono died in prison in 2002 at age 67. Bianchi remains incarcerated in Walla Walla, Washington and is now 72.

Lonnie David Franklin Jr.

Franklin’s brutal L.A. killing rampage with a 25-caliber handgun began in 1985 and went on for more than two decades. Franklin was convicted in 2016 of killing nine women and a teenage girl, Reuters reported. He was given the infamous nickname Grim Sleeper because he took a 14-year break from homicides — from 1988 to 2002. During the penalty phase of his trial, prosecutors connected him to several additional slayings. Detectives believe he may have killed at least 25 women, according to the Los Angeles Times. Franklin, 67, died on death row in 2020 at age 67.

Patrick Kearney

In the 1970s, Kearney would troll California highways and gay bars in search of men to pick up and then rape and murder. He dismembered his victims, stuffed their body parts into heavy-duty garbage bags and dumped them on the side of the road. His murder method earned his duel nicknames: “the Freeway Killer” and “the Trash Bag Killer.” In exchange for taking the death penalty off the table, Kearney pleaded guilty to 21 murders, according to CBS News. In 1978, he received 21 life sentences. Kearney, 83, is currently incarcerated at Mule Creek State Prison in Ione, California, per prison records.

Take a deeper dive into the true-crime history of the City of Angels when The Real Murders of Los Angeles premieres this fall on Oxygen.

Ariane De Lobkowicz Leaves Défi for the MR: Where Is She Now?

Ariane De Lobkowicz, a notable figure in Belgian politics, made a significant shift when she left the Défi (Democratic, Federalist, Independent) party to join the MR (Reformist Movement) in the Brussels Parliament.

This transition marked a turning point in her political career and raised questions about her current activities and whereabouts.

Ariane De Lobkowicz garnered attention as the youngest Member of Parliament (MP) in Belgium when she was elected at the age of 23 in 2019.

Her decision to leave Défi and align herself with the MR was primarily driven by a fundamental policy disagreement, particularly concerning ritual slaughter.

The breaking point between Ariane De Lobkowicz and Défi was her involvement in a proposed ordinance aimed at prohibiting slaughter without stunning, a practice often associated with religious rituals.

This issue became a focal point of contention within the party, leading to divisions.

Despite her efforts and advocacy for animal welfare, the proposal was narrowly rejected, including four votes against from Défi members who had initially supported the project.

Ariane Lobkowicz expressed her disappointment at the rejection, believing that the decision was influenced by electoral considerations rather than a genuine commitment to animal welfare.

This discord created a sense of uneasiness within Défi, prompting her to contemplate leaving the party for over a year.

In her view, the MR was a more suitable platform for her political ideals. She identified as a social liberal and felt that the MR aligned better with her values, particularly their clear stance on neutrality.

Moreover, she cited her discomfort with voting instructions within Défi, emphasizing the importance of parliamentary freedom to vote based on personal convictions.

Her decision to join the MR was not driven by hatred towards her former party; she acknowledged that Défi had given her a chance and expressed a degree of regret that it had come to this point.

Kouri Richins Says Letter Found in Her Cell Isn't Proof of Witness Tampering, But Part of Book She's Writing

0

The grief book author who’s been charged with her husband’s murder — and who was accused of witness tampering in the case last week — says there’s a perfectly good excuse for the contents of a letter found in her jail cell that was presented as evidence of the alleged meddling.

Kouri Richins claimed in a jailhouse call to her mom over the weekend that the letter, which was addressed to her mother, wasn’t really intended for her — but rather is part of “this fictional mystery book” that she’s working on, People reports.

RELATED: Grief Book Author Charged with Poisoning Husband Accused of Witness Tampering after Letter Found in Jail Cell

Richins is accused of killing her husband, 39-year-old Eric Richins, in their Kamas, Utah home on March 3, 2022 by giving him a Moscow Mule containing five times the lethal dose of fentanyl. She was arrested this past May at the home, and is also accused of trying to make Eric’s death look like an accidental overdose.

In March, two months before Richins was arrested, her children’s book on how to deal with grief was released.

Last Friday, the State of Utah filed a motion claiming that a six-page, handwritten letter was discovered in Richins’ jail cell while Summit County deputies were conducting a search of her cell block. The court filing reportedly states that the letter was addressed to Richins’ mother, Lisa Darden, and that the note allegedly instructed her to have Richins’ brother, Ronald Darden, testify that Eric got drugs in Mexico before his death.

The court filing stated that Richins wrote in the note that Lisa should tell Ronald to testify that, “Eric told [redacted name] that he got pain pills and fentanyl from Mexico from workers on the ranch.”

The letter, obtained by People, also allegedly states that Eric had told Ronald “not to tell me because I would get mad because I always said he just gets high every night and won’t help take care of the kids.” It reportedly goes on to say that Ronald can “reword this however he needs to, to make the point. Just include it all.”

On Saturday, the day after the state filed its motion, Richins conducted a phone call with her mother, according to prosectors’ transcriptions of the call in court filings obtained by People. On the call, Richins allegedly told her mom that the note wasn’t written for her, but is part of  “this fictional mystery book.”

“Those papers were not a letter to you guys, they were a part of a freaking book,” Richins allegedly added.

The murder suspect’s brother Ronald told People that the book is “loosely based on what’s going on, but definitely fiction.”

While on the phone with her mom Saturday, Richins also allegedly said of the book she claims she’s writing: “I go to Mexico and I’m trying to find these drugs … You can tell the whole thing is very much a story.”

RELATED: Housekeeper of Grief Book Author Accused of Fatally Poisoning Husband Says She Sold Her Fentanyl

After the state accused Richins of witness tampering last week, her defense team filed a motion stating that entering the letter into court record violated a gag ordered that was put on attorneys in the case, claiming the filing is “an extrajudicial statement made for the apparent purpose of influencing the court of public opinion,” People reports.

Richins hasn’t entered a plea yet in the murder case.

Prosecutors have asked for a no contact order between the defendant and her mom and brother in light of the found letter, but a ruling has not been made yet.

"I Want to Take Responsibility": Alex Murdaugh Pleads Guilty to Federal Charges of Fraud and Money Laundering

0

Six months after being convicted of killing his wife and youngest son, Alex Murdaugh pleaded guilty in federal court Thursday to 22 counts of fraud and money laundering charges, marking the first time he has taken responsibility for any of the dozens of crimes he’s been accused of.

The disbarred South Carolina attorney, 55, is accused of defrauding his personal injury clients and laundering millions of dollars between 2005 and 2021, using settlement funds intended for those who hired him for his own benefit.

“I want to take responsibility,” Murdaugh told the judge in the Charleston courtroom, adding that he wanted to own up to his actions, in part for the sake of his surviving son Buster, according to the Associated Press. “I want my son to see me take responsibility. It’s my hope that by taking responsibility that the people I’ve hurt can begin to heal.”

Murdaugh entered his guilty plea while wearing his prison jumpsuit, as he’s currently serving two life sentences without the possibility of parole for murdering his wife Maggie and their son Paul in 2021, crimes he was convicted of and sentenced for in March.

Days after he was sentenced, Murdaugh’s lawyers said they would appeal the murder convictions, but earlier this month, his attorneys requested a new trial, alleging that the court clerk in the case tampered with the jury.

The motion they filed claims that Colleton County Clerk of Court Rebecca Hill told jurors not to trust Murdaugh when he took the stand in his defense, that she pushed jurors to reach a verdict quickly, and that she had private conversations with the jury foreperson.

But even if the murder convictions were to be overturned, his guilty plea in the federal financial crimes case will likely mean he’ll face decades in prison regardless.

Each of the 22 counts carry a maximum sentence of either 20 or 30 years in prison. They include 14 counts of money laundering, five counts of wire fraud, and a count each of bank fraud, conspiracy to commit wire and bank fraud, and conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

The plea agreement states that Murdaugh must cooperate and adhere to specific guidelines, and in return the government will recommend that his federal sentence be served concurrent to any state sentences for the same alleged crimes, according to CNN.

“The Defendant agrees to be fully truthful and forthright with federal, state and local law enforcement agencies by providing full, complete and truthful information about all criminal activities about which he/she has knowledge,” the plea agreement states.

Murdaugh will also be required to work with the government to repay victims $9 million, take a polygraph test if asked to, and testify in other trials if requested, CNN reported.

A recommended sentence is not included in the deal. The judge signed the plea agreement and will hand down the sentence at a future date.
