Providence Relocates Iryna Zarutska Mural Amid Activist and Mayoral Advocacy Efforts

0

Following a concerted effort by left-leaning activists and Providence’s Mayor Brett Smiley to halt the creation of a mural depicting Iryna Zarutska, a Ukrainian refugee who was tragically killed, the artwork’s original project was abandoned. However, a different venue in the city has now embraced the mural, ensuring its completion.

Opa the Phoenician, a Lebanese eatery situated in the historic Federal Hill area of Providence, has taken on the task of hosting the mural. Artist Ian Gaudreau commenced the mural’s installation on Friday.

The mural was initially set to adorn the exterior of The Dark Lady, an LGBT bar located downtown. Nevertheless, the bar succumbed to pressure from opponents, leading to the suspension and subsequent cancellation of the project.

Mayor Smiley emerged as a key figure in opposing the mural’s creation.

“The murder of the individual depicted in this mural was a devastating tragedy, but the misguided, isolating intent of those funding murals like the one across the country is divisive and does not represent Providence,” he said in a statement, adding that he wanted to “encourage our community to support local artists whose work brings us closer together rather than divide us.”

Co-owner of Opa, Francois Karam, emphasized that the restaurant is owned by immigrants and the mural is a way to honor Zarutska’s story as an immigrant.

“[Iryna] was once an immigrant chasing the American dream,” Karam said, according to WJAR. “She worked to build a life for herself and lost it along the way. This mural is our way of honoring her on a building owned by an immigrant family who understands that journey.”

Gaudreau echoed that sentiment.

“He has an immigrant family story himself,” he said of Karam. “So he really connected with Iryna, and he felt really passionate about the project.”

Zarutska was killed on Aug. 22 after she was randomly stabbed from behind on a Charlotte, North Carolina, light-rail train. The suspect in her unprovoked murder is Decarlos Brown Jr., who had a lengthy rap sheet, including convictions for larceny, breaking and entering, and armed robbery.

He had previously served five years in prison.

I Mistook My Symptoms for Aging—But It Was Actually Bowel Cancer

0

Kerry Hatrill didn’t feel any pain or discomfort that demanded immediate attention. Instead, what she experienced was a subtle yet persistent heaviness that seemed to seep into her limbs, refusing to vanish.

By the afternoon, Kerry was noticeably fatigued, struggling through a haze of tiredness that she couldn’t quite put her finger on. She chalked it up to the demands of life catching up with her. At 49, balancing work and family, she thought this must be what aging feels like.

As she began experiencing bloating and her energy levels continued to plummet, Kerry believed she had found the answer: menopause.

This gradual hormonal transition into a new chapter of life is something every woman anticipates in midlife. Conversations with friends and articles she read painted the picture—exhaustion, bodily changes, and the unsettling feeling of not quite recognizing oneself.

The slow, inevitable hormonal shift into a new phase of life that every woman can expect in midlife. Friends spoke about it, articles described it – the exhaustion, the changes, the sense of not quite feeling like yourself.

So Kerry carried on.

The tiredness deepened, but it was easy to rationalise. A bad night’s sleep. A stressful week. Too much on her plate.

Even the subtle changes in her body – things she might once have questioned – were folded into that same reassuring narrative: this is normal, this is age, this is just what happens.

Like many women approaching 50, Kerry Hatrill blamed her growing list of symptoms - fatigue, bloating and changes in her bowel habits - on perimenopause

By the time more obvious symptoms began to emerge, Kerry had already spent weeks learning how to explain them away.

When she noticed faint pink streaks after going to the toilet, she assumed it was nothing serious. The mother-of-two put it down to something she had eaten – or simply another indignity of getting older.

But over the following weeks, the symptoms began to stack up. Kerry, a customer service assistant from Bromley, developed persistent bloating, worsening fatigue and subtle but definite changes in her bowel habits.

Her GP initially reassured her after a stool test came back normal. Yet the unease lingered.

Soon, there was a growing urgency to use the toilet, paired with a frustrating sensation of needing to go but being unable to.

‘My stools became pencil thin, and I often felt the urge to go but couldn’t,’ she says.

She also began experiencing occasional sharp rectal pain – alongside the same unrelenting fatigue that had first crept in weeks earlier.

It was only after a significant episode of bleeding in April 2024 that she returned to her doctor. This time, further tests revealed low iron anaemia – a red flag that prompted an urgent referral for a colonoscopy.

During the procedure, which involves a camera being inserted into the back passage, doctors discovered a large tumour in her rectum – roughly the size of a small orange.

A month later, Kerry was diagnosed with stage three rectal cancer.

‘I’d already been given an indication it could be cancer, so when I received the official diagnosis, I felt prepared,’ she says. ‘I was calm and ready with questions.’

Bowel cancer is diagnosed in around 45,000 people and is responsible for around 17,700 deaths in Britain every year. This makes it the second-most common cause of cancer death.

In the United States, approximately 158,850 people are expected to be diagnosed with colorectal cancer this year – and just over 55,000 will die from it.

While it has long been associated with older age, cases among younger adults have been rising.

Today, 45 per cent of diagnoses are in under-65s – a significant jump from 27 per cent in 1995. One in five diagnoses now occur in people under 55. At present, everyone in Britain is offered a home screening test every two years from the age of 50.

In America testing in recommended from age 45, and also includes a colonoscopy – which is considered the gold standard visual exam.

During the procedure, precancerous polyps, if spotted, can be removed. Typically, this is performed every 10 years if results are normal.

While still relatively uncommon in younger groups, around 2,500 Britons and 12,500 Americans under 50 are now diagnosed each year – and numbers are rising.

While diagnoses in older adults are falling, rates in younger people have been increasing in recent years – a trend that has both mystified and concerned doctors.

According to Cancer Research UK, diet is a key area of concern. Evidence suggests eating too much red and processed meat increases the risk of bowel cancer, alongside eating too little fibre.

Adults are recommended to get 30g of fibre a day – but around 96 per cent fail to meet this target.

Not getting enough calcium – found in foods such as milk and yoghurt – may also play a role. One recent study found that an additional 300mg of calcium a day, roughly the amount in a glass of milk, could significantly lower bowel cancer risk.

Being overweight, physically inactive and smoking are also known to increase the risk.

If caught early, the disease is highly treatable – around 90 per cent of patients diagnosed at stage one are cured. But once the cancer has spread – known as stage four – survival drops sharply, with only around one in ten patients living for five years or more.

Although initially frightened during the colonoscopy, by the time her diagnosis was confirmed, Kerry says she did not see it as a death sentence.

‘They said it was treatable and that gave me a sense of relief,’ she says. ‘I simply wanted the cancer removed and to be cured.’

She underwent an intensive course of treatment, beginning with four rounds of chemotherapy, followed by 25 sessions of radiotherapy alongside chemotherapy tablets.

In February last year, she had major surgery to remove the tumour.

‘Telling my kids was incredibly hard because I couldn’t guarantee what the outcome would be,’ she says of her sons, Jake, 28, and Craig, 25.

Despite the uncertainty, she says their support carried her through.

Throughout treatment, Kerry experienced nausea, weakness, joint pain and extreme fatigue – and has since been left with long-term peripheral neuropathy affecting her fingers and toes.

The condition, which can cause tingling, burning or stabbing pain, numbness and muscle weakness, is a known side effect of some chemotherapy drugs.

She continued working throughout, supported by her employer.

Then, just one month after completing her final round of chemotherapy, came the news she had been hoping for.

‘When I was told, I felt elated,’ she says. ‘Everything I had been through felt worth it.’

Despite extensive publicity around the spike in bowel cancer cases among under-50s, thousands of young women are still being diagnosed with the disease too late, when it is no longer curable.

This is because early signs of the disease, such as fatigue, changes in bowel habits and blood in the stool, often overlap with much more common symptoms associated with hormonal changes after birth or in mid-life.

As a result, key red flags for the deadly disease can be dismissed as simply ‘women’s issues’ by GPs and patients.

This was the case for Married At First Sight star Mel Schilling, who passed away last month, aged 54, from bowel cancer that had spread to her brain.

The psychologist-turned-relationship guru had put off seeing a doctor because she believed the symptoms – including abdominal pain, constipation and fatigue – were due to the menopause.

The same was true for bowel cancer campaigner Dame Deborah James, who died in 2022. She put her change in bowel habits down to the stress of being a ‘super mum’ working full-time.

For a year she ignored her increasingly severe symptoms – losing weight, passing blood and needing the loo ‘what felt like 100 times a day’ – before finally having a colonoscopy.

For younger women like these, says Genevieve Edwards, chief executive of charity Bowel Cancer UK, keeping an eye out for the signs of bowel cancer is low on their priorities.

‘If a woman is experiencing concerning symptoms, it’s understandable that she and her GP might explore other avenues first,’ she said.

‘Because bowel cancer, though rising, is still rare in that age group, they often end up going back to their GP time and again while other causes are ruled out.

‘But by that point, you may end up with a cancer that is much harder to treat.’

Now on a five–year monitoring plan, Kerry is sharing her story to raise awareness of the symptoms she initially dismissed.

‘I want to encourage others not to ignore symptoms,’ she says.

‘If you notice changes in your bowel habits lasting more than three weeks, blood when you wipe, bloating or extreme fatigue, please seek medical advice.

‘You’re never too young – and if something doesn’t feel right, keep pushing for answers. Early detection can make a life–changing difference.’

Man Admits to Threatening Former President Trump, Taunting Secret Service: Court Documents Reveal Shocking Details

A man from North Dakota has confessed to making threats against former President Donald Trump, claiming even the most trusted security agents couldn’t protect him.

Andrew Walter Sandvik has entered a guilty plea for knowingly and intentionally threatening the life of, kidnapping, and inflicting bodily harm on the president of the United States. This information comes from a federal plea agreement examined by Law&Crime. At the age of 47, Sandvik was charged in November 2025 with influencing a federal officer through threats and making threats against the vice president.

The plea agreement reveals that on August 30, 2025, Sandvik took to Facebook to declare, “Trump I am threatening your entire existence! Your SS cannot protect you from me!”

Sandvik acknowledged that “a reasonable person would view the communication as containing a true threat to the President” and admitted that he “posted the message for the purpose of issuing a true threat and with knowledge that the message would be viewed as a true threat,” according to the court documents.

As part of the plea deal, prosecutors agreed to dismiss the additional charges against Sandvik. The November 2025 indictment had initially included three counts of threats against the president and one count of threats against the vice president.

If Sandvik violates the terms of his plea agreement, “engages in any further criminal activity,” or doesn’t show up for his sentencing hearing, the U.S. “will be entitled to reinstate previously dismissed charges.”

On Sept. 4, 2025, a Fargo Police Department detective reported Sandvik for making “concerning online posts regarding violence” directed toward Trump and law enforcement officers, a criminal affidavit in the case stated. The document added that the posts contained a profile picture of someone who “strongly resembles” Sandvik wearing a beanie hat.

After officers learned about the possibility that Sandvik may have been building a bomb, they spoke with him. And on Sept. 17, 2025, investigators learned the suspect had allegedly made “more concerning” posts about Trump and FBI Director Kash Patel.

“Secret Service it is no secret I am your biggest threat you better get here fast,” read one post, with another calling for the FBI, CIA, and foreign intelligence agencies to “come get me!”

“Trump, Can You Feel My Footsteps Coming?” stated another post, followed by the words, “Death is now marching towards the failed and weak Donald Trump!” Sandvik also allegedly posted, “Patel I[‘]m waiting for you.”

Sandvik was arrested, and a judge issued an order of detention for him after prosecutors warned they believed he was mentally unstable and a likely threat to others, as Law&Crime previously reported. Prosecutors also asked that the defendant undergo a psychiatric evaluation, using testimony from Sandvik’s family members provided to federal agents to try to convince the court.

A family member reportedly told the FBI that over the summer, Sandvik claimed he was “directly communicating with God” and had been “assigned tasks to perform at God’s request.” Investigators noted that these statements were consistent with his social media posts.

Federal prosecutors say in the plea agreement that under its terms, Sandvik faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison with three years of supervised release and a $250,000 fine. They will, however, recommend “a sentence at the low end of the applicable Guideline range.”

A sentencing date was not immediately listed on the docket.

Trump Slams Fox News, Calls for Removal of ‘Real Loser’ Host in Fiery Critique

0

In a recent social media outburst, former President Donald Trump criticized Fox News hosts Shannon Bream and Jessica Tarlov, specifically targeting Tarlov and calling for her removal from the network. This demand came late Monday night via a post on Truth Social.

Trump’s post was directed towards Fox executives, urging them to remove Tarlov from the airwaves. He described her as “one of the worst ‘personalities’ on television” and accused her of spreading falsehoods. “People cannot stand watching her,” Trump asserted in his message.

Jessica Tarlov, known for her liberal viewpoints, regularly appears as a co-host on Fox News’ talk show “The Five.” She often critiques the former president during her segments, contributing to the show’s diverse political discourse.

The tension between Trump and Tarlov heightened following Trump’s incendiary remarks directed at Iran over the weekend. In a post on X, Tarlov labeled Trump’s behavior as an embarrassment, further escalating their ongoing feud.

Last month, Tarlov was absent during a group interview with Trump conducted over the phone on “The Five.” This absence led Trump to question whether it was a decision made by Tarlov herself or the Fox News network.

“The Five” co-host Jesse Watters asked Trump to come back on the show, saying, “Because we really want you to sit next to Jessica. I think you’d be a good influence on her.”

Trump quickly jabbed, “I watch Jessica, and I’m not a fan,” accusing the liberal TV personality of using “fake” polling numbers, like a presidential approval rating of just 42%.

He added: “I’m sure I’d like her, I’m sure she’s a lovely person, she’s just not for me.”

Watters joked, “I get it, we’re working on her, don’t worry.”

Trump then questioned her absence from the interview, saying, “Now tell me, did she not want to do it or did you kick her off the show?”

“We didn’t kick her off. She had a previous schedule she couldn’t change,” Watters replied.

Tarlov later shared a clip of the interview in a post on X, writing, “Was so bummed to miss the show today! But I definitely would’ve said he’s even inflating his numbers to 42%!”

In his Truth Social post Monday night, Trump also took aim at Bream, who hosts “Fox News Sunday” and is also the network’s chief legal correspondent.

“Tell Shannon Bream of FoxNews [sic] that it’s not the Save Act, it’s the Save America Act, a big difference!” Trump wrote. “Also, when she insists on having lightweight Democrat Congressmen, such as Jake Auchincloss, on her not very hard hitting show, she should correct them when they spew out Democrat propaganda and lies. She never does!”

After passing through the House, the SAVE Act, also known as the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act or the SAVE America Act, has been stuck in the Senate despite the president urging representatives to vote through the legislation.

The new legislation would require Americans to show a photo ID when voting in-person or by mail, and to prove they are citizens when they register to vote.

Trump’s criticism was also aimed at Bream’s recent interview with Rep. Jake Auchincloss (D-Mass.), who argued on the show that the White House has no real plan to end the war in Iran.

Tragic Loss: Former Miss North Carolina and NC Central Student Carrie Everett Passes Away After Brave Battle with Rare Cancer

0

Durham, N.C. — In a sorrowful turn of events, former Miss North Carolina 2024, Carrie Everett, has passed away on Monday morning after a battle with cancer.

Surrounded by her loved ones, the 22-year-old breathed her last in the Seattle area, according to her family’s announcement.

Everett had been diagnosed in 2024 with a rare and aggressive cancer known as signet ring cell carcinoma. Following her diagnosis, she made the decision to return to her home in Washington state to be close to her family during this challenging time.

The pageant titleholder was pursuing her studies at North Carolina Central University in Durham.

Chancellor Karrie G. Dixon shared the heart-wrenching news with the university’s student community through an official statement.

“It is with deep sadness that I inform you of the passing of Ms. Carrie Everett, most recently a sophomore music major, on Sunday, April 5, 2026, after a valiant battle with cancer,” wrote Chancellor Dixon. “Carrie will be remembered as a trailblazer who shared her inspirational talent and leadership with so many. As a sophomore in 2024, she became the first current HBCU student to be named Miss North Carolina. Her platform, We Need Equity to Build Communities, sought to make pageants more accessible to young people. Her work to recruit young women who may not consider pageants due to the expensive entry fees and wardrobes was commendable. Carrie selected NCCU because of the university’s music program – she enjoyed singing gospel music – and regularly graced NCCU occasions with her beautiful singing voice. Her ambition, grace, tenacity and talent will be deeply missed.”

Everett spoke to ABC affiliate WTVD in September when she mentioned she was excited about returning to Durham to continue school, despite her illness.

In a Monday Instagram post on Everett’s social media, the caption reads, “We are heartbroken to share that last night, the beautiful nightingale, Helen Carrie Everett, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. The cries of her heart became songs that stirred the spirits of everyone who had the pleasure of hearing her sing. She lived a full life and with her last words, on stage and in life, she proclaimed the goodness of God. Her impact on this world is undeniable, and we will carry on her legacy of advocacy and praise.”

Festival Called Off Following UK’s Ban on Kanye Due to Antisemitic Comments

0
The rapper formerly known as Kanye West has been barred from entering the UK, where he was scheduled to headline the Wireless Festival in July, after a backlash over Ye’s history of antisemitic remarks.

The three-day outdoor festival has been officially called off due to a travel ban, with organizers assuring ticket holders that they will receive full refunds.

The BBC reported, citing the Home Office, that Ye’s electronic travel authorization has been revoked. Officials determined that his presence in the UK would not be “conducive to the public good.”

The artist, who legally changed his name in 2021, was scheduled to perform in the UK for the first time in over ten years. He was set to headline London’s Wireless Festival in Finsbury Park from July 10-12, entertaining approximately 150,000 attendees. The festival had yet to announce other performers for the event.

Organizers faced increasing pressure from both sponsors and politicians to cancel Ye’s performances following widespread backlash over his antisemitic comments and expressions of admiration for Adolf Hitler.

In the previous year, Ye released a controversial song titled “Heil Hitler” and listed a T-shirt with a swastika for sale on his website. In January, the 48-year-old offered an apology, publishing a full-page letter in The Wall Street Journal. He attributed his actions to his bipolar disorder, explaining that it led to “a four-month long, manic episode of psychotic, paranoid, and impulsive behavior that destroyed my life.”

Wireless sponsors Pepsi, Rockstar Energy and Diageo pulled out of the festival since Ye was announced as the headliner.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the booking “deeply concerning” and Health Secretary Wes Streeting said on Tuesday that Ye should “absolutely not” play at the festival.

In a statement issued on Tuesday before his travel authorisation was revoked, Ye said he “would be grateful for the opportunity to meet with members of the Jewish community in the UK in person, to listen”.

“I know words aren’t enough — I’ll have to show change through my actions,” he said.

“If you’re open, I’m here.”

Phil Rosenberg, president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, had said the group would be willing to meet with the musician if he pulled out of the festival.

“The Jewish community will want to see a genuine remorse and change before believing that the appropriate place to test this sincerity is on the main stage at the Wireless Festival,” Rosenberg said.

Organiser Festival Republic had stood by Ye. In a statement issued on Monday, managing director Melvin Benn urged people to offer the performer “forgiveness and hope”.

“We are not giving him a platform to extol opinion of whatever nature, only to perform the songs that are currently played on the radio stations in our country and the streaming platforms in our country and listened to and enjoyed by millions,” the statement said.

Announcing the cancellation, Festival Republic said that “multiple stakeholders were consulted in advance of booking Ye and no concerns were highlighted at the time”.

“Antisemitism in all its forms is abhorrent, and we recognise the real and personal impact these issues have had,” it said in a statement.

“As Ye said today, he acknowledges that words alone are not enough, and in spite of this still hopes to be given the opportunity to begin a conversation with the Jewish community in the UK.”

The Community Security Trust, which works to protect British Jews, said the government had made the right decision.

“Anti-Jewish hatred should have no place in society and cultural leaders have a role to play in ensuring that is the case,” it said in a statement.

“People who show genuine and meaningful remorse for previous antisemitic behaviour will always receive a sympathetic hearing from the Jewish community, but that process must come before this kind of public rehabilitation.”

A representative for Ye didn’t reply to a request for comment.

Lil Tjay Arrested After Altercation, No Connection to Offset Shooting Incident

Rapper Lil Tjay found himself in legal trouble on Monday evening after being arrested for disorderly conduct following an altercation in Florida. This incident coincided with a separate shooting involving Offset at the valet area of the nearby Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.

The 24-year-old artist, known for his hit “Can’t Change,” was reportedly not connected to the shooting targeting Offset, a former member of Migos. Notably, Lil Tjay survived a shooting last year where he was struck seven times.

“We want to address the false rumors circulating about Lil Tjay’s involvement in a shooting,” stated his attorney, Dawn M. Florio, on Tuesday. “Lil Tjay has neither been shot nor charged in connection with any shooting. Reports suggesting otherwise are inaccurate.”

The Seminole Police Department provided an update to the Daily Mail, confirming that two individuals had been taken into custody and that the investigation remains active. They assured the public that the area is secure and operations are proceeding as usual.

In a statement to the Daily Mail, the Seminole Police Department said: ‘Two individuals have been detained by police. The investigation is ongoing. The site is secure and there is no threat to the public. Operations continue as normal.’

Offset (born Kiari Kendrell Cephus) is still recovering from his ‘non-life threatening injuries’ at Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, FL.

‘We can confirm he was shot and is currently at the hospital receiving medical care,’ the three-time Grammy nominee’s rep told the Daily Mail Tuesday.

‘He is stable and being closely monitored.’

Witnesses said the Fashion Icon rapper had been standing near the entrance and looking out toward the valet area while taking a call when fans approached him.

Offset was said to have smiled and shaken hands with the fans, and he allegedly stopped to talk with them and pose for some photos shortly before the shooting started.

The Georgia native is the father of six children with three different women, including estranged wife Cardi B, who filed for divorce in 2024 after six years of marriage.

It’s unclear if Offset will be well enough to perform his next scheduled concert May 9 at the Xperience Live Event Center in Orlando, FL.

The shooting came nearly four years after he suffered the loss of his Migos bandmate Takeoff who died, at age 28, after being shot multiple times in the head and torso outside 810 Billiards & Bowling in Houston.

Patrick Xavier Clark faces 25 years to life in prison after being indicted by a Texas grand jury in 2023 for murder for allegedly shooting a firearm into a crowd of 30 people partying and playing dice.

The 23-year-old strip club promoter/DJ – who is free on a $1 million bond – will face a jury this November after several delays, and he denies being the shooter despite prosecutors claiming to have surveillance footage.

The two-time Grammy nominee (born Kirsnick Khari Ball) was an unarmed ‘innocent bystander’ and was not involved in the dice game or the arguments about basketball before 10 shots rang out from two different weapons.

Discover the Surprising Origins of Star Trek’s Iconic Phaser Sound in a Classic Sci-Fi Horror Film

0

The technology featured in “Star Trek” is as legendary as its characters. From the mesmerizing transporters that whisked crew members away from danger to communicators that predicted the wireless future, the series was full of imaginative innovations. Among these, the phaser stands out, introducing a tech-centric weapon that often saved Starfleet personnel in perilous situations. The distinct sound of a phaser firing became synonymous with action, but this sound effect actually made its debut in a classic sci-fi horror film before finding its way to the U.S.S. Enterprise.

Although the phaser is a “Star Trek” original, its signature sound was borrowed from the 1953 film “War of the Worlds,” recognized as a pioneer in alien invasion cinema. Ben Burtt, the sound designer behind the 2009 “Star Trek” movie, revealed to TMPEG (as reported by TrekMovie.com) that this audio effect originated from the film’s Martian war machines. Surprisingly, its creation involved a simple yet creative technique using tape feedback from an electric guitar and harp. For the series, this sound was replicated using a Moog synthesizer and pink noise, which features frequencies diminishing by three decibels per octave.

Even as phasers evolved over the course of the series, Burtt managed to honor the sound that played a pivotal role in shaping the sci-fi genre.

J.J. Abrams’s 2009 “Star Trek” film reimagined the original series with a more polished and intense aesthetic. This updated vision meant that the quirky, cartoonish sounds of the past wouldn’t fit. Nonetheless, Burtt ingeniously incorporated the iconic phaser sound from “The War of the Worlds” into the film’s auditory landscape.

Burtt explained to TMPEG, “The constant sound wasn’t suitable because the visuals are so different, so I created something reminiscent of it, featuring a shorter, sharper Doppler effect.” He aimed for it to resemble the sound of a fly bolt or tracer bullet. This adaptation heightened the drama in the movie’s combat scenes, emphasizing the lethal stakes when a phaser fires. This homage not only nods to the life-or-death scenarios faced by the Enterprise crew but also celebrates the 1960s series that laid the foundation for it all.

How 2009’s Star Trek film honors the phaser sound effect and The War of the Worlds

J.J. Abrams’s 2009 “Star Trek” movie is a sleeker and more dramatic version of “Star Trek: The Original Series.” This means that tinny, cartoon-like sounds wouldn’t sound right in this updated take, but Burtt still found a way to include that special phaser sound that was copied from “The War of the Worlds.”

Burtt told TMPEG, “The steady sound just wasn’t the right way to go because the visuals are so different, so I made something that recalls it, but features a Doppler effect that’s shorter and sharper.” He added that he wanted it to sound more like a fly bolt or tracer bullet. His interpretation adds plenty of drama to the film’s battle scenes, as these sharp tones remind us that the firing of a phaser could result in death for either villains or heroes, and that’s important when the crew of the Enterprise is trying to save Federation space from total destruction. At the same time it provides a fitting homage to the ’60s television series that started it all.

The dangerous nature of phasers is why it makes sense that “Star Trek: The Original Series” took its phaser sound from “The War of the Worlds.” The Martian war machines shoot deadly lasers that take out humans across the globe, proving that phasers are not that much different from these weapons. The big difference is that phasers are mostly used by “Star Trek” heroes. This allows characters from the franchise, as well as its fans, to embrace futuristic technology rather than fear it — an idea not explored in “The War of the Worlds.”

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — “Please help me.”

These were the frantic words of a driver whose car veered into a retention pond in Hillsborough County last week. As the water steadily rose inside the vehicle, panic set in.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has since shared both the 911 call audio and the body camera footage from the dramatic April 5 rescue.

“I’m in the lake. I’m gonna drown. I don’t know how to swim. Please, I’m gonna drown,” the driver urgently communicated to the dispatchers.

Meghan Markle Surprises ‘Suits’ Co-Star Patrick J. Adams with a Thoughtful Gift of As Ever Jam

The Duchess of Sussex has assured her former “Suits” co-star, Patrick J. Adams, that a jar of her homemade jam is on its way to him. This follows a lighthearted exchange where Adams joked about not receiving one due to his comparatively modest number of social media followers.

During an appearance on the “Not Skinny But Not Fat” podcast, Patrick, who famously portrayed Mike Ross opposite Meghan Markle’s character in the popular legal drama, confessed to podcast host Amanda Hirsch, “I did not get a jam.” Amanda had just mentioned receiving a selection of flower sprinkles and spread from Meghan’s brand, As Ever.

The duchess became a recurring topic in the podcast episode, prompting Amanda to inquire if Patrick, now 44, had ever been the recipient of Meghan’s handwritten notes. “Yes, I’m sure I got a handwritten note,” Patrick confirmed, going on to commend Meghan’s handwriting as “impeccable” and “astonishing.”

In response to Patrick’s question about the jam, Amanda revealed that she had indeed received a care package, which included As Ever’s $15 flower sprinkles and a $12 spread. This playful banter highlights the ongoing camaraderie between the former co-stars and the duchess’s thoughtful gestures.

‘Did you get a jam?’ Patrick fired back before Amanda said she had received a care package containing As Ever’s $15 flower sprinkles and $12 spread.

He then joked, ‘I don’t have enough followers, I don’t think,’ as Amanda teased him, saying: ‘You need to get on the list.’

After a clip from the segment about the duchess was posted on Instagram, Meghan left a comment for Patrick and his wife, Troian Bellisario, letting them know that ‘jams [sic] en route for you’.

She also sent her love and ‘hugs’ to the couple’s three ‘beautiful babies’ – daughters Aurora, seven, Elliot, four, and Imogen, who was born in January – as well as Patrick’s mother.

Elsewhere, Amanda told Patrick that the mother of two sent her a handwritten note after the initial trailer release for the episode.

‘I was worried that this trailer would have people at her throat again, and she wrote me a note saying, basically saying, “Thank you for being afraid for me, but don’t be, it’ll be fine”.’

Patrick said: ‘What she’s gone through is insane,’ before adding that he has also received handwritten notes from Meghan over the years: ‘Her handwriting is like a work of art, truly, it’s astonishing.’

He also admitted that ‘eye rolls were a constant with Meghan’ during their time filming Suits together.

The comment came after Amanda asked the actor about his Instagram bio, which reads: ‘The other guy from that show that you’re watching on that app because that girl married that prince.’

Patrick joked: ‘I’ve got to change that,’ before adding it’s the sort of joke that would make the duchess roll her eyes.

The actor added: ‘I got a lot of eye rolls. That was a constant with Meghan, her rolling her eyes at me like, “Oh my god, what are you doing?”.’

The actor previously confirmed that he has had no communication with his former co-star following the legal drama’s streaming success.

Patrick and his Suits co-star Gabriel Macht were asked if they had spoken to Meghan recently during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in 2024 after the show’s popularity had experienced a revival in popularity thanks to its arrival on Netflix.

US actor Gabriel, who played top lawyer Harvey Specter, said: ‘I have not communicated with her other than seeing her big support for the resurgence, and that has been really nice.’

Patrick, whose character was in a relationship with Meghan’s Rachel Zane, said: ‘Zero. No, no communication.’

The actor then jokingly pretended he was getting a call, saying: ‘Oh, hold on. There she is. Oh, got to go.’

At the Golden Globes in January that year, Patrick and Gabriel presented the best TV drama award before they were joined by fellow stars Gina Torres and Sarah Rafferty.

Gina, who played lawyer Jessica Pearson in the US legal drama, revealed at the LA ceremony that the ex-castmates simply ‘don’t have [Meghan’s] number’ when asked if anyone had reached out to the former actress.

An insider told Page Six that the duchess was invited to the event, but ‘unfortunately’ wasn’t able to make an appearance because of a ‘previous commitment’.

Speaking to Variety on the red carpet, Gina was asked: ‘Who texted Meghan and said “You’ve gotta come to the Golden Globes, Meghan Markle”.’

‘We don’t have her number. We just don’t so. She’ll see. She’ll watch. She’ll be happy that we’re here,’ said the actress, who attended the royal wedding between Prince Harry and Meghan in 2018.

The interviewer also asked: ‘Did you plan this? Are you all texting each other?’ She explained: ‘When it all came through, we were all texting each other. Yes, our text thread is insane right now. So it’s very exciting.’

Suits originally aired on USA Network for nine seasons from 2011 to 2019, and saw genius college dropout Mike Ross join a high-profile law firm alongside Harvey Specter, Jessica Pearson and Louis Litt (Rick Hoffman), while Rafferty played Harvey’s no-nonsense assistant Donna Paulsen.

The duchess played Rachel Zane, a paralegal who becomes a formidable attorney and eventually marries Mike Ross.

Earlier in the night while walking the red carpet, Gabriel discussed the show’s reawakened popularity.

‘It’s an amazing thing. We had some great success when the show was on… and then at a certain point, Netflix came in. It’s just gotten incredible eyes and we’re very grateful for it,’ he told Entertainment Weekly.
