Cooper and Miklos worked together on numerous treasure-hunting projects, continuing to do so for several decades. Cooper was a firm believer in aliens and unidentified flying objects, having experiences with unusual aircraft when he was younger. He debated that the US government was withholding information about UFOs.

Path to Treasure Hunting

His father’s friendship with Cooper lead them to be hired by NASA during the Apollo Program. Darrell and his father would comb the sea, recovering booster rockets used for flights. Over the next two decades, he became involved in work with NASA, while also excavating shipwrecks near the coast of Florida. He also became friends with Cooper, and the two would work together for many years. He became a certified diver, and was later invited to join the American Academy of Underwater Scientists. He eventually opened his own company in 2014, called Gemini Marine Exploration. Darrell now uses his experience to offer shipwreck recovery services with his company. Before Cooper passed away, he gave information to Miklos which would become a catalyst for his next treasure adventures. He then had an idea of creating a television show which became “Cooper’s Treasure”.

Cooper’s Treasure

In a 1963 mission, Gordon Cooper was sent on a 122 hour flight around the world, detecting nuclear sites. He photographed numerous locations, and discovered more than 100 anomalies around the South Caribbean area, which appeared as dark patches, and were said to be sunken ships. Throughout his lifetime, he secretly worked with the Miklos family on many of these ships, uncovering treasure that is rumored to be worth billions of dollars. Before he passed away, he then gave his research and documents to Darrell.

“Cooper’s Treasure” follows Darrell and his team of explorers as well as researchers, in efforts to complete Gordon’s dream. The show has led them to unusual discoveries and a bit of treasure – one of his most significant finds was what was reported as evidence of an ancient UFO, submerged beneath the Bermuda Triangle. According to documentation taken, there was a large unusual structure on the seabed which was unlike any the team had seen before. It also had corals growing out of it in structures that were unusual. He plans to learn more about the structure and hopefully uncover its secrets. They’ve also uncovered sunken treasure several times in the show, consisting of ancient artifacts and the like.

Personal Life

For his personal life, it is known that Miklos is married and he has two children from that marriage. However, he does not disclose any information about them as he likes to keep most of his personal life away from the media spotlight. He mentioned in an interview that his first project was with his father, discovering the Nuestra Senora de Atocha shipwreck from the 1622 Spanish Fleet, which was uncovered at the Marquesas Keys. He’s also travelled to land expeditions in Mexico, Campeche and the Yucatan, exploring various ancient Mayan ruins.

Similar to numerous television personalities, he is highly active online through accounts on social media. He has accounts on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, mainly used to promote some of his recent and upcoming projects, including “Cooper’s Treasure”. He still undertakes personal expeditions during his free time. His Facebook account also does a similar job in promoting his television work. Videos of him travelling on expeditions, and diving can also be seen on his Instagram account. He mentioned in an interview that one of the reasons they are discovering more shipwrecks than treasure hunters in the past is due to new technology. For the most part, second-round draft picks don’t turn out to be stars in the NBA. Sure, there are occasional exceptions — Manu Ginobili and Draymond Green were a couple of notable second-rounders — but generally, if you’re not a first-round pick, you have a higher mountain to climb.

Middleton was able to contribute right away. Though that 2013-14 Bucks team wasn’t very good, Middleton played in all 82 games and doubled his scoring, rebounding, and assists output. He was joined in the frontcourt by the Bucks’ first-round draft pick that year, Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Middleton continued improving and got his first taste of the playoffs in 2015. The Bucks rewarded him with a five-year, $70 million contract in 2015. The previous year, he had made $915,000.

Though a hamstring injury limited Middleton’s 2016-17 season, he bounced back stronger than ever. The following year, Middleton played in all 82 games and posted a career-high in minutes played and then-career-high in points per game.

Middleton’s on-court success correlated with Milwaukee’s winning ways, too. The team made the Eastern Conference Finals in 2019 and Middleton got a huge payday to stick around: five years and $178 million. 

In 2020, the Bucks had the best record in the Eastern Conference. Middleton made the All-Star team in both seasons and nearly posted the elusive 50%/40%/90% split from the field, free throw line, and three-point line during the 2019-20 season.

This year, Middleton set a career-best in assists per game as the Bucks made him an even bigger focal point of the offense. And alongside Antetokounmpo and offseason signing Jrue Holiday, Middleton has the Bucks in the NBA Finals for the first time since 1974.

By the time his current contract ends, he’ll have earned more than a quarter of a billion dollars in salary. Not bad for a second-round pick that was traded away after his first season.

Former Microsoft executive and current LA Clippers owner Steve Ballmer has had a mixed emotions day today. Put another way, he received some good news… and some bad news.

The good news? Today Steve joined the $100 billionaire club for the first time.

The bad news? Today a publication put him on blast for taking advantage of an eye-popping tax loophole.

Let’s start with the good news.

$100 Billion Club

With Microsoft’s stock price hitting an all-time high on Wednesday, Steve Ballmer’s net worth crossed the $100 billion mark for the first time. His net worth ended at $102 billion on Wednesday, then slipped to $101 billion on Thursday.

As I type this article, Steve Ballmer’s $101 billion net worth makes him the ninth-richest person in the world. Here’s the top 10:

According to the company’s latest proxy statements, Steve Ballmer owns 333.3 million shares of Microsoft. At today’s price, those shares alone account for roughly $93 billion of Steve’s fortune. Over the years he has sold several billion worth of shares and received several billion in dividends.

Steve joined Microsoft in 1980 at the urging of his college buddy Bill Gates. Six years later, in 1986, when the company went public, Steve’s equity at the time gave him a net worth of $85 million.

When Steve took over as CEO from Bill in 2000, he was worth $13 bullion. When he stepped down as CEO in 2013, he was worth $22 billion.

Outside of his Microsoft shares, Steve owns a number of valuable assets, notable the Los Angeles Clippers NBA team. Steve bought the Clippers in 2014 for $2 billion. The seller was disgraced former owner Donald Sterling and Donald’s ex-wife Shelly.

Eye-Opening Tax Loophole

On a day that should have been a huge celebration, here comes ProPublica to rain all over Ballmer’s parade!

Over the last few weeks ProPublica has been releasing some pretty scandalous articles breaking down exactly how the richest Americans use tax loopholes to avoid paying taxes. These billionaires are not doing anything illegal, they’re just following the tax laws as they are written. BUT that doesn’t make it any easier to digest when you read that Jeff Bezos took a $4,500 child tax credit a few years ago when he was worth $100 billion.

Today’s exposé from ProPublica exposes a tax loophole related specifically to sports team ownership. And they use Steve Ballmer as their primary target to illustrate the egregiousness of the loophole.

Long story short, according to a quirk in American tax laws, someone can write off the entire purchase price of a sports team over the ensuing years of ownerhips… even as the team gains value in those years.

ProPublica found that in 2018 Steve Ballmer reported $685 million in income. The same year, LeBron James reported $114 million in income. Ballmer paid a 12% Federal tax rate and LeBron paid 35%. A real concession worker at Steve’s games paid 14% of her income in Federal taxes.

By writing off… or more technically “amortizing”… the purchase price, Ballmer was able to reduce his taxable income. This resulted in $140 million worth of savings for Ballmer over several years. Essentially a $140 million tax-free loan from the American public. If the billionaire dies without selling the team, the loan is forgiven. If they leave the team to their children, the amortization schedule resets anew. If he does sell the team while he’s alive, he does have to pay the tax bill but he’s been given an interest free loan potentially for decades. What would you do with an interest free loan of $100 million over 30 years? Just investing it in the S&P 500 would return on average 7% a year, so after 20 years you’d have $386 million.

In 2002 he quit his job and established the antique collection job called Frank’s Finds, based in Savanna, Illinois. The show sees him alongside longtime friend Mike Wolfe as they travel around the US in the act of “picking”, which is buying items from personal collections for resale. Most of the time they find unusual locations during their travels and stop at places that look like they might have things worth buying. They also often return to certain locations more than once, usually finding casual collectors, hoarders, and the occasional person with overwhelmingly large collections. The two have their own specializations, with Wolfe interested in air-cooled Volkswagens, old bicycles including penny-farthings, while Frank looks at gasoline pumps, film posters, and commercial signage. The show proved very popular, the highest rated show on debut that History channel had since “Ice Road Truckers”. Their popularity has also allowed them to appear in other shows, such as “NCIS” in which Mike made a cameo.

Personal Life

For his personal life, there were rumors going around that Fritz was gay, due to his chemistry with co-star Mike on screen as well as their friendship. This was later denied as the two mentioned that they are childhood friends, and that Mike is married to a longtime girlfriend. He also has a daughter. When Fritz started his business, he mentioned that he was a bachelor and had no children, so that he could focus on his shop. It was later revealed that he is in a relationship with a lady named Diann, a divorcee who has a daughter from that marriage.

It is also known that Frank has been suffering from Crohn’s disease for over three decades; the sickness is in incurable intestinal tract disease, which often gives him abdominal pain and causes him to lose weight. Frank was put under unsupervised probation for a year, and had to complete treatment along with a substance evaluation program. Another offense he had was for breach of contract with a South Carolina-based customer. According to reports, the customer wanted to buy a polarimeter which was used to measure sugar content in alcohol. He contacted the customer and agreed to sell an antique one for $300 plus shipping; however, the customer never received the item. The case went to court and the customer won $1,000 plus an $80 on default as Frank didn’t appear at the hearing.
