Dodgers’ Roki Sasaki Unveils Mysterious Third Pitch Without a Name

WASHINGTON –– There’s a new pitch on the horizon that has yet to be christened with a name.

This innovative technique is still seeking its identity.

Since the onset of this year’s spring training, Roki Sasaki has been honing a new third pitch to enhance his fastball and splitter combination. This addition is pivotal for the Dodgers’ rising star, even though its characteristics are still being perfected.

The pitch exhibits qualities of a breaking ball, showcasing right-to-left movement paired with a sharp vertical drop.

Simultaneously, it’s an off-speed pitch, reaching speeds in the upper 80s mph, creating a stark contrast to his blazing fastball that often touches the upper 90s.

When Sasaki debuted it in regular-season play for the first time last week, MLB’s Statcast system originally tagged it as a cutter.

But upon a check Saturday afternoon –– ahead of Sasaki’s next outing Sunday against the Nationals –– it’d been reclassified as a slider on the league’s official stats page.

“I think the name will change depending on how much it breaks,” Sasaki said in Japanese this spring. “Personally, I just want to be able to throw it comfortably without it affecting my current pitching motion.”

To that end, the Dodgers have given Sasaki mental cues, instructing him to think like he’s throwing a cutter even if the pitch has more slider-esque movement.

That doesn’t mean, however, people around the team have settled on exactly what to call it.

Sometimes it’s a slider. Sometimes it’s a cutter. And sometimes, it’s an unintentionally-NSFW mash-up of both. (Not a slurve, but…)

“I’m not sure,” manager Dave Roberts laughed when asked what the team’s official term for it is.

“We haven’t seen it enough to know how we’re gonna treat it,” echoed catcher Dalton Rushing.

“Honestly,” pitching coach Mark Prior added, “it depends on the day.”

Alas, Sasaki’s new pitch doesn’t need a specific name –– just as long as it serves a specific purpose.

The right-hander could’ve benefited from a more consistent third alternative last year, when his fastball velocity was down, his splitter command was wild, and he stumbled to a 4.72 ERA in eight rookie-season starts.

Some of that, of course, was due to a shoulder injury that eventually landed the 24-year-old on the injured list. When he returned for the playoffs in the bullpen, his primary two weapons were enough to navigate a relief role.

But now, Sasaki is back in the rotation despite a disastrous spring training, and again battling command issues in his continued transition to the majors.

Enter the new third pitch, which proved surprisingly effective in his first start of the campaign.

“It was a big step forward,” said Rushing, who was behind the plate for the four-plus-inning, one-run performance against the Cleveland Guardians last Monday.

In that outing, Sasaki still lacked much control. His fastball was over the plate on less than half of 38 throws. Only one of his 18 splitters wouldn’t have been a called ball. And if not for an overly-aggressive Cleveland offense, he almost certainly would’ve finished with more than two walks.

However, the cutter/slider/whatever helped give him balance. It clipped the zone 13 of the 22 times Sasaki used it. It also got four whiffs on 12 swings, only really getting squared up once when Steven Kwan hit a center-cut mistake for a double.

“He’s still gonna be meat-and-potatoes with four-seam and split,” Prior said. “But (the third pitch) has honestly been a pretty decent pitch for him, even in spring training … He seems to have a good idea of where it’s going. He can throw it to get back into counts.”

That latter point is the most crucial one.

Whereas last year, Sasaki toyed around with a big-breaking sweeper that averaged almost a foot of horizontal break, his new pitch is more of a “gyro” or “bullet” slider, spiraling out of his hand almost like a quarterback throws a football.

It has less break, moving only a couple inches to his glove side. It has little spin, similar to his fork-ball splitter that practically knuckles to the plate. Yet, it appears to be easier to locate, giving him a more deceptive option with which to challenge hitters.

“The more he throws it in the zone,” Rushing said, “it makes his fastball much better.”

Last year, Sasaki and the Dodgers learned what happened when opposing hitters could sit on his fastball. Thanks in part to its flat shape, opponents slugged .500 against it.

The return of Sasaki’s velocity should help with that. Better command will also make his heater a more potent pitch.

But for now, the new third offering at least gives him something different –– even if it still lacks a designated name.

“We’ll see what the game ultimately tells us as we get more sample size, if there needs to be an adjustment in how we use it,” Prior said. “But right now, whether it’s (because it’s) limited on the opposing team’s radar, or actually comes out of the hand where it effectively gives him some separation and goes the other direction, it’s serving its purpose.”

The parents had been taking their kids to buy baby supplies when the shooting happened around 1.20pm.

They had originally thought someone had set off fireworks, which had caused her son to hop out of the stroller.

The family fled into a nearby bodega before Moore noticed her daughter’s head was bleeding, surveillance footage obtained by the New York Post showed.

As she screamed in terror, the father of her two children grabbed their daughter and carried her to Woodhull Hospital seven blocks away, ‘all while her blood [ran] on his hands,’ the mother said on social media.

While at the hospital, it was discovered that little Kaizen had also suffered from a bullet graze. The bullet had hit his back after passing through his sister. It left a lump on his back.

Police sources told The Post that the stray bullet may have been intended for the girl’s father. Additional sources confirmed to The New York Daily News that police were investigating whether the shooting was gang-related, which has been denied by Patterson-Moore’s mother.

Police believe the shooting was gang-related and are investigating whether the shooter was aiming for Patterson, who is allegedly linked to the Money Over Everything gang, the New York Daily News reported.

Moore, however, denies that her fiancé has ties to gangs, writing on social media: ‘The police say anything to put things together fast to piece sum [sic] together.’

The mother-of-two said her ‘babies were always protected,’ and said the accusations are ‘insensitive and disturbing.’

‘God don’t like ugly,’ she wrote. ‘I’m grieving my baby girl, god has something for you cs [sic] ya ugly and disturbed mentally.’

The mother-of-two now wants a remedy for her daughter’s death.

‘I want justice,’ Moore said. ‘They deserve to stay in jail, and they don’t deserve to come out after what they did to my baby, because I can’t get her back.’

In truth, Snyder seems ideally suited to helm such an adaptation. His cinematic style, characterized by dark and intense themes, mirrors the grim and violent essence of “The Dark Knight Returns,” a narrative that underscores the impossibility of Gotham ever becoming a utopian city—a theme that resonates deeply in Snyder’s filmography.

Snyder has never been shy about his love of the source material either. In fact, while discussing the 10-year anniversary of “Batman v Superman” with “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Snyder admitted that’s one comic book movie he’d still like to do. “I would still make ‘The Dark Knight Returns’ as a film if that opportunity arose,” he said. “Did I steal, or borrow, or homage as much as I could within the context of the mythology that I was creating? Yes. But the thing about ‘Dark Knight Returns’ is it is a closed loop of awesomeness that owes nothing to anything except for a masterful deconstruction of gods that we all grew up with.”

Truth be told, Snyder would be a perfect director. On top of knowing who he’d want to star in his adaptation, “The Dark Knight Returns” is a grim and violent affair that proves Gotham will never turn into a beacon of sunshine, which is in line with the narratives and themes found in Zack Snyder’s movies.

American Legion Post 145 Organizes Fourth Annual Walk to Raise Awareness on Veteran Suicide

BRISTOL, Tenn. (WJHL) – On Saturday morning, the American Legion Post 145 organized its fourth annual walk to raise awareness about veteran suicide as part of its ‘Be The One’ initiative.

The ‘Be The One’ program is a crucial effort by the American Legion aimed at combating veteran suicide. It focuses on educating people on how to support veterans by checking in with them, listening to their concerns, and providing help when they face challenges.

The walk covered a distance of 2.2 miles, representing the alarming statistic that approximately 22 veterans die by suicide each day, according to event organizers. Participants began their journey at Marion Street, proceeded along Martin Luther King Blvd., and made a stop at the Bristol Veteran’s Memorial.

Paul Federow, a veteran of the Vietnam era, shared with News Channel 11 his reasons for joining the annual walk. He emphasized the importance of shedding light on the experiences of veterans like himself.

“The treatment Vietnam veterans received upon returning home, coupled with the horrific experiences they faced during the war, takes a significant mental toll,” Federow explained. “It’s vital for us to make an effort to address this issue, and participating in this event is heartening.”

American Legion Post 145 Commander, Butch Rhymer, said the event started years ago where he was among one of the walkers on the very first day it started. The event started with a handful of people, where over 60 people showed up today to walk the event.

Rhymer said the event has brought more awareness in suicide prevention as of today.

“It’s made a change, and especially in veterans’ suicide prevention,” Rhymer said. “It’s helped a whole lot. It’s just bringing awareness out to where people know some of the signs to look for and just, take care of their family members that are veterans or their friends.”

American Legion Post 145 Adjutant, Roy Davis, said from American Legion to veterans, help is available to those who are lost.

“This county has got a very high suicide rate is amongst veterans,” Davis said. “It struggles with the fact that once you’re in the military, you always have guidance. You always have something to do, some direction. When you get out of the military, you lose that.”

“We have support for people that are with struggles and have strife in their life and that we are here for anybody and anybody can come Be The One,” Davis said.

The President of the United States has decided to extend his initial 48-hour ultimatum to Iran, urging them to either forge an agreement or reopen the crucial waterway that was closed late last month. As the clock ticks down with less than 48 hours remaining, he has issued a stark warning that “time is running out.”

In a post on Truth Social, the President reminded the public of his previous demand, stating, “Remember when I gave Iran ten days to MAKE A DEAL or OPEN UP THE HORMUZ STRAIT.” He emphasized the urgency of the situation by declaring, “Time is running out – 48 hours before all Hell will reign down on them. Glory be to GOD! President DONALD J. TRUMP.”

In response, Iran has issued a defiant statement of its own, cautioning the United States that it is prepared to retaliate with “hell” if provoked.

Iran has responded with a threat of its own, warning the US it will return “hell”.

“Do not forget that if aggression expands the entire region will turn into a hell for you,” a spokesperson for the Iranian military’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters said.

“The illusion of defeating the Islamic Republic of Iran has turned into a swamp in which you will sink.”

Iran is showing no signs of yielding to Trump’s deadlines, raising questions about how the US will respond if the Strait of Hormuz is not reopened within 48 hours.

When the countdown reached its final hours, the president announced he would extend it another five days after the countries had a “very good and productive conversations regarding a complete and total resolution of our hostilities in the Middle East”.

Top Iranian politician Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf later denied that negotiations had been held and said the “fake news is used to manipulate the financial and oil markets and escape the quagmire in which the US and Israel are trapped”.

As the deadline looms, the US and Iran are racing against another ticking clock to find an American airman missing after an F15-E Strike Eagle fighter jet was shot down by Iran on Friday.

One member of the two-person crew was rescued but the search continues for the second.

It was one of two US military aircraft that went down after being struck by Iran. A single-crew A-10 Warhog was hit and its pilot was later rescued.

US officials have been unusually quiet about the missing airperson.

Speaking to The Independent about whether they could be harmed, Trump said: “We hope that’s not going to happen”.

Iranian officials have placed a $US60,000 ($87,000) bounty on the member’s capture, which would be an incredible coup for the country in its negotiations with the US.

It has been more than 20 years since a US military plane was shot down over enemy soil.

The last time it happened was during the US invasion of Iraq in 2003, when an Iraqi missile struck an A-10 Thunderbolt II.

The pilot in that attack ejected safely and was rescued by coalition ground forces.

Adele Lisa Tamati was settling into her dream house when a sudden mishap with a routine household item left her with permanent injuries.

On a chilly Friday evening in May 2022, Tamati, 53, was eager to enjoy her newly purchased home in Perth, Australia, by lighting the fireplace for the first time.

As she prepared the fireplace, filling it with ethanol, she leaned in to ignite it. What followed was a scene reminiscent of a horror film.

“The entire fireplace exploded. All I can recall is a massive fireball heading straight for me,” Tamati recounted in an exclusive interview with the Daily Mail.

‘The whole fireplace exploded. All I remember is a big fireball coming towards me,’ Tamati explained during an exclusive interview with the Daily Mail.

Suddenly, Tamati was engulfed in flames. She tried doing what everyone was taught in school by stopping, dropping and rolling but that didn’t work.

‘My son and his friend grabbed the dog blankets and started trying to put the flames out with those but because I was covered in accelerant, they caught light too,’ she continued.

Thankfully, her son Dene’s quick thinking ultimately saved her life as the then-20-year-old told her to jump in the pool.

She bolted outside and dove into the water, which put out the flames.

‘This is when the pain set in,’ Tamati said. ‘When I looked down I noticed all the skin of my right arm floating in the water and leaving my arm. Everything then went black and I woke up in [the hospital].’

Tamati suffered third degree burns all over her body. And recovery would not be easy.

She ultimately spent five weeks in the hospital and had to undergo two skin graft operations.

She also had to have extensive physical therapy to regain the use of her hands and arm.

‘Once I returned home, I could do nothing for myself. [My fiancé Dion had to] wash me, dress me, wash my hair, help feed me,’ she shared. ‘He did absolutely everything for me, he was an angel.’

In addition to her physical pain, Tamati struggled mentally, as she has had a hard time coming to grips with the way she looked.

‘When I first saw the way I looked, I was horrified,’ she admitted.

When she would go out in public, she recalled strangers staring at her, which often left in tears.

‘Gradually, I started going out. But I felt very self conscious and people did stare,’ she explained.

‘This was hard… one woman stared so much in a shop, she actually stopped to completely stare at me … I went home and cried my eyes out.’

Now, four years on, Tamati has learned to accept her scars, and despite the incident she feels ‘very blessed’ and ‘super lucky’ to be alive.

She has since married her fiancé, Dion, and she now has two grandchildren with two more on the way.

‘We had an amazing day surrounded by our family and closest friends,’ she said of her wedding.

‘We got married in the sun and I wore a sleeveless dress, I have accepted my scars and I wear them with pride.

‘I should not be alive to tell the tale, but thanks to the amazing team at [the hospital], I am living a full life and have almost all movement in my limbs.’

But she is still receiving laser treatments for the burns and battles PTSD from the horrific accident.

‘It’s still ongoing. My burns are still tight, but I massage and moisturize twice daily to help them and if this is how they are for life, I am still so very lucky [to be alive],’ she added.

‘When I talk about the accident I will have nightmares for a few nights and I do suffer with PTSD.

‘I struggle to sleep every night, but again, hey, I am here to tell the tale so am very grateful.’

Her advice to others? Never use an ethanol fireplace.

‘My message to anyone with an ethanol fireplace is please, please, please get rid of it,’ she urged.

‘The paramedic that attended to me said it is not the first accident of this type he had been to.

‘There can be a tiny blue flame, invisible to the naked eye that explodes when accelerant is poured on. They are so dangerous.’

Last week, he said that ‘people who say new exploration licences will somehow create huge amounts of energy for us’ were ‘just wrong’.

Ms Reeves, by contrast, has said she is ‘very happy’ to back exploration at the Rosebank oilfield and Jackdaw gas field in the North Sea.

‘We’ve got hundreds of billions of pounds worth of energy treasure sitting under our feet.

‘It’s our patriotic duty to maximise British gas production, create jobs, boost growth, and achieve true energy independence.

‘Labour and the Tories have failed on this for years. Reform will lift the restrictions on day one, get drilling and deliver lower bills for everyone.’

That view has been echoed by President Trump, who has described the North Sea as a ‘treasure chest’ for the UK and urged Sir Keir Starmer to take advantage of it.

Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar, the SNP, Tony Blair’s think tank and the Labour-supporting GMB Union have also expressed their support.

The average price of a litre of diesel at UK forecourts is up 30 per cent since the start of the war to 185.2p and could breach £2 within weeks, experts have warned.

Meanwhile, petrol prices have risen 16 per cent to an average of 154.5p per litre over the same period.

Anthony Albanese, the Australian Prime Minister, has already halved fuel duty.

Writing in this week’s Mail on Sunday, Lord Ashcroft says: ‘Having seen how precarious our supplies from the Middle East can be, more think the Government should end its absurd ban on new oil and gas exploration in the North Sea than keep it.

‘For worried families, household bills and security of supply tend to win out over Net Zero targets.’
