Trump Advises JD Vance on Strategies to Avoid Conflict with Iran: Live Updates

UK minister denies Trump threatened NATO over Hormuz

A British defense minister has dismissed recent claims suggesting that Donald Trump threatened to withdraw NATO backing unless the alliance dispatched warships to the Strait of Hormuz imminently.

Reports surfaced yesterday indicating that NATO head Mark Rutte purportedly informed members of Trump’s demand for firm commitments to deploy military ships or equipment to the Middle East.

These claims emerged soon after Trump criticized NATO as ‘disappointing,’ asserting that it only took action under duress.

Defense Procurement Minister Luke Pollard, speaking to Times Radio, stated, “That’s not an action we recognize.”

He further clarified, “We have consistently stated that the conflict in Iran is not ours, yet we have increased our efforts to protect our allies from Iran’s reckless attacks on British and coalition bases, as well as our partners in the Gulf.”

‘And indeed, the secretary general of Nato, Mark Rutte, said yesterday that he praised the work of Keir Starmer and the UK in bringing together allies in support of opening the Strait of Hormuz to allow the flow of energy and ships through that important shipping channel.’

Strait of Hormuz Sees Minimal Traffic Despite Ceasefire and Absence of New Attacks

0

Only ten ships have navigated the Strait of Hormuz since the ceasefire between the United States and Iran was declared, according to maritime tracking data. This cautious approach stems from ongoing concerns about traversing this crucial passage.

The announcement of a two-week truce on Wednesday by both Iran and the US included plans to reopen the vital 167-kilometer strait, which connects the Gulf to the Indian Ocean.

Nevertheless, remarks from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards and continued Israeli aggression in Lebanon have heightened apprehensions about the strait, a key channel that ordinarily sees about 20% of the world’s crude oil and liquefied natural gas shipments.

Following six weeks of conflict ignited by US and Israeli military actions against Iran, a significant number of vessels and thousands of crew members remain stranded on either side of the strait. The International Energy Agency has labeled this as the most significant disruption to the global oil market supply ever recorded.

Here’s what we currently understand about the shipping situation in the Strait of Hormuz:

Dire strait for tankers

Just four tankers and six bulk carriers have passed through the strait from the start of the ceasefire up to Thursday, according to maritime data provider Kpler.

Only one of those tankers, the “MSG”, is not Iranian.

The Gabon-flagged ship went through Thursday with around 7,000 tonnes of Emirati fuel oil, and is headed to India, according to the MarineTraffic monitor.

A dozen other vessels appeared to be on course to pass through the waterway, and all were either coming from or going to Iran, or displayed ties with countries not hostile to Iran. That signals little real change from traffic before the ceasefire.

“The Strait remains as open or closed as it was” before the ceasefire plan emerged, shipping journal Lloyd’s List editor-in-chief Richard Meade told a briefing.

Traffic in the past week was “90 per cent below normal levels and it was almost entirely being driven by Iranian trade,” said Bridget Diakun, a Lloyd’s List Intelligence analyst.

Traffic is expected to remain at a maximum 10-15 passages a day “if the ceasefire holds”, according to Kpler analyst Ana Subasic.

Of the 315 passages by commodity carriers from 1 March to 8 April 2025 were by oil and gas tankers, and most were heading east towards the Gulf of Oman, Kpler data showed. A majority involved ships coming from or heading to Iran.

Iran approved route

Iran announced alternative routes through the strait on Thursday, citing the risk of sea mines in the waterway’s main zone. The IRGC set out routes that go near Iran’s Larak Island.

The IRGC said ships could only use the strait in collaboration with the Iranian navy, according to intelligence firm Vanguard Tech.

Apart from three Omani tankers that passed through last week near Oman’s coast, recent transits have used the Iranian-approved route, with some ships reportedly paying a fee.

The Financial Times reported on Wednesday that Iran could ask for one dollar per barrel of oil passing through the strait, to be paid in cryptocurrency.

Shipping industry representatives told AFP that other rumours indicated ships had to be on an approved list, or that countries would be ranked, with ships from countries friendly to Iran receiving better conditions.

800 ships stuck

Many shipowners and shipping associations are unsure whether ships would be able to safely pass from the Gulf to the Gulf of Oman, even if the ceasefire holds.

Leaving the Gulf now “would not be advisable” without coordinating with the United States and Iran, Jakob Larsen, chief safety and security officer for the international shipping association BIMCO told AFP on Wednesday.

Around 800 ships have been stuck in the Gulf since the war started on 28 February, according to Lloyd’s List. German shipping giant Hapag-Lloyd has said it will not resume traffic on the route.

Some 172 million barrels of crude and refined products on 187 tankers were at sea in the region as of Tuesday, according to Kpler.

Thirty vessesls targeted

No new attacks on ships have been reported since the ceasefire started.

The IRGC claimed three attacks on ships between Saturday and Tuesday, and one has been confirmed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Thirty commercial ships, including 13 tankers, have been attacked or have reported incidents in the region since 1 March, according to the IMO, the UK Maritime Trade Operations Centre and Vanguard Tech.

Discover the Top 10 Most Powerful Characters in Jujutsu Kaisen

0

In Gege Akutami’s “Jujutsu Kaisen,” a captivating narrative unfolds in a realm where protective jujutsu sorcerers clash with malevolent curses. Utilizing unique techniques and domain expansions, these characters harness the energy inherent in all living things. As one might expect, the series boasts a roster teeming with incredibly formidable figures.

If you’re a fan of “Jujutsu Kaisen,” you’re likely aware of two key points. First, a list of just 10 characters barely scratches the surface of the show’s impressive lineup of powerful individuals. Second, it’s probable that some of your personal favorites didn’t make the cut. For instance, the internet sensation Kento Nanami, voiced by Kenjiro Tsuda in Japanese and David Vincent in English, doesn’t appear here. Even the series’ protagonist, Yuji Itadori, voiced by Junya Enoki and Adam McArthur, narrowly misses out on the Top 10. This raises the question: which characters are potent enough to secure a spot?

Before diving in, a word of caution for those only following the anime: to accurately convey the true strength of some characters, we’ll delve into achievements that have, as of now, only been revealed in the manga. With that spoiler alert in mind, let’s explore the list of contenders!

Maki Zenin, voiced by Mikako Komatsu and Allegra Clark, seems an unlikely candidate for this list, at least on paper. Her binding vow, known as Heavenly Restriction, completely deprives her of cursed energy, necessitating special glasses just to see curses. This limitation even led her to part ways with the sorcerer-centric Zenin clan.

Yet, the other side of the Heavenly Restriction is what sets Maki apart. Her physical prowess is extraordinary, even by the high standards of “Jujutsu Kaisen.” She doesn’t stand out for her conventional jujutsu sorcery skills; rather, her sheer competence and strength set her apart from her peers.

10. Maki Zenin

On paper, Maki Zenin (Mikako Komatsu and Allegra Clark) has no business being on this list. Her binding vow, Heavenly Restriction, locks her out of cursed energy so thoroughly that she needs special glasses to even see curses. For this reason, she actually left the sorcerer-heavy Zenin clan.

However, the flip side of the Heavenly Restriction coin is that Maki’s physical abilities are superhuman even by “Jujutsu Kaisen” standards. She doesn’t hang with the rest of the characters because she’s a talented jujutsu sorcerer in the traditional sense — she does it because she simply is that good.

Maki’s superhuman physical abilities are formidable enough to battle foes she would otherwise struggle to compete with. She’s strong, fast, and skilled. While she’s extremely durable, she can take damage from powerful enough attacks, and accumulates an impressive array of battle wounds over the course of the series. Yet, she’s known to recover from the kind of stuff very few “Jujutsu Kaisen” characters should be able to withstand. Maki’s ability to compensate for her lack of cursed energy by leaning on her own strengths and tools makes her different from the majority of other figures in the franchise, and more than enough of a problem to warrant a place on the list.

9. Yuki Tsukumo

Yuki Tsukumo (Noriko Hidaka and Anjali Kunapaneni) is a free-wheeling special grade jujutsu sorcerer who’s notorious for disagreeing with Jujutsu High’s methods and not taking any missions. This doesn’t mean she’s a coward, though. On the contrary, she’s a cool, playful, and focused character who works on her own solutions for dealing with curses, instead of the reactionary tactics Jujutsu High has embraced.

Yuki’s status as a special grade jujutsu sorcerer gives a rough idea of her strength, which is honestly overwhelming. Her physical abilities and fighting skills are brutal, and her innate cursed technique, Star Rage, can put mass behind her attacks, allowing her to deal crushing blows. To give you an idea of how destructive this can be, Yuki’s ability to add mass is so extensive that she can actually turn her own body into a black hole as a last resort tactic.

She can also heal from grisly injuries by utilizing her abilities. If all of this wasn’t enough, she also has a serpentine spirit familiar called Garuda, whose powers Yuki can augment in order to turn it into a cursed tool weapon. She can also resist domain expansion attacks — which are usually unblockable — with a technique that neutralizes them.

Though Yuki isn’t invincible and ultimately falls to Kenjaku — more on him later — the battle really could have gone either way and Yuki had Kenjaku seriously concerned. This alone is a testament for the sheer threat she poses.

8. Toji Fushiguro

Toji Fushiguro (Takehito Koyasu and Nicolas Roye) is a menace, to put it mildly. The second character on the list with less-than-comfortable ties to the Zenin Clan, he’s a confident, stoic, and calculating assassin whose nickname, “Sorcerer Killer,” is a testament to his abilities.

As a gun for hire, Toji is effectively a game-ender whenever someone coughs up enough cash to pay for his services. Toji is a force to be reckoned with despite being a non-curse user. He’s an incredibly powerful physical specimen and a master tactician who is able to come up with fight plans to overwhelm just about anyone. He even uses his lack of cursed energy to render himself invisible to those used to perceiving it. After all, virtually every other person has at least trace amounts of the stuff. Thanks to his unique skill set, he manages to give even Satoru Gojo (Yuichi Nakamura and Kaiji Tang) trouble before ultimately meeting his fate at the hands of the overpowered special grade jujutsu sorcerer.

Like Maki Zenin, Toji has Heavenly Restriction, which has granted him abnormally sharp senses to complement his physical prowess and tactical skills. He also owns a very handy cursed spirit known as the Inventory Curse, which can store Toji’s vast arsenal of normal and cursed weaponry. This enables the assassin to switch tools and tactics at a moment’s notice without overencumbering himself.

7. Suguru Geto

Suguru Geto (Takahiro Sakurai and Lex Lang) becomes a “Jujutsu Kaisen” villain over time as he starts to see humans as inferior to sorcerers. As a major antagonist who moved from jujutsu sorcerer status to that of a ruthlessly evil curse user, he obviously has power to spare. Being one of the four special grade sorcerers in the world, he’s a particularly powerful character whose physical fighting skills and extreme intelligence would already be fearsome even if he didn’t have his nasty cursed technique.

Geto’s innate technique is Cursed Spirit Manipulation, which allows him to command cursed spirits — even ones that are already tied to another sorcerer, provided that he kills the sorcerer first. He can collect an indefinite amount of these curses, and has possessed over 4,000 of them at once. As a last resort attack, he can even unleash them all at once with his Maximum: Uzumaki technique. Geto also has a handy special barrier technique called the Curtain, which creates a dome-like energy barrier that can either hide things from view or trap others inside.

6. Hajime Kashimo

A centuries-old sorcerer in a contemporary body, Hajime “God of Lightning” Kashimo (Ryōhei Kimura and Zeno Robinson) is a massively powerful figure who participates in the Culling Game and establishes himself as a fast and powerful menace with hand-to-hand skills to spare. As his nickname implies, his personal cursed energy ability is lightning-themed, and turns his body into a live wire in a way that amplifies his attacks. Like traditional electric power characters, Hajime can also shoot lightning.

The fun thing, however, is that all that stuff isn’t even Hajime’s real gift. It just goes to show just how great he is at manipulating cursed energy. His true innate cursed technique is turning into the Mythical Beast Amber, a fearsome monster that physically transforms Hajime to reflect various electric powers, such as electromagnetic energy beams.

All of this would be enough to potentially put Hajime even higher on the list if it wasn’t for a few demonstrated weaknesses. As a lightning-themed character, he’s weak to water. He can also unleash Mythical Beast Amber only once in his lifetime, and his battle against Ryomen Sukuna (Junichi Suwabe and Ray Chase) shows that Hajime is very, very far from invincible.

5. Rika Orimoto

Rika Orimoto (Kana Hanazawa and Anairis Quiñones) is just a girl. Then she’s hit by a car, and the desperate focus of her friend Yuta Okkotsu (Megumi Ogata and Kayleigh McKee) imbues her with vast amounts of cursed energy. As a result, the young girl becomes the strongest cursed spirit ever seen. Still enamored with Yuta in this condition, she starts haunting and protecting him, whether he likes it or not.

Rika is so immensely strong that Suguru Geto — who, remember, is a cursed spirit manipulator with access to over 4,000 spirits — considers Rika the Queen of Curses and would love to use her as a weapon. When necessary, she’s also able to use her considerable physical might to battle opponents or perform various support actions. Oh, and those aforementioned 4,000 spirits at Suguru’s disposal? Rika ends up beating them all with relative ease once Yuta unlocks her full strength by promising himself to her.

Rika’s curse is ultimately lifted and she passes on peacefully. However, during the years she spent haunting Yuta, she was easily one of the most formidable entities in the world, intertwined with him though she was. She left a little something behind her, too: While the real Rika has moved on, she gifted the cursed spirit some of her will, which allowed a new, separate Rika entity to keep on accompanying Yuta.

4. Kenjaku

Kenjaku might look and sound like Suguru Geto, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Instead of Geto surviving death on “Jujutsu Kaisen,”  his corpse was hijacked by a disembodied, ancient brain implanted in Geto’s head, which is just one of the many host bodies he’s used before.

Since Geto’s body still retains his innate spirit manipulation abilities and Kenjaku is a 1,000-year-old curse user with evil intentions, this is obviously a problem. Where Geto is the most evil curse user of his time, Kenjaku has a solid claim for the all-timer award, and his lengthy existence has given him plenty of jujutsu skills to boot. Kenjaku is a masterful barrier user and tactician, and apart from Suguru’s borrowed abilities, he has a number of his own.

Kenjaku’s innate Brain Transplant ability allows him to move his (weirdly toothy) brain from one host to another, allowing for effective immortality. He also has a gravity-themed cursed technique known as the Antigravity System, which he retained from former host Kaori Itadori. He also boasts one of the most unnerving domain expansions in the series: Womb Profusion, which summons a massive, tree-like knot of malformed cursed spirits. He also has access to a special cursed object called Prison Realm, which can trap people and things in a pocket dimension.

3. Yuta Okkotsu

Yuta Okkotsu seems to start out as a pretty weak dude who stumbles into special grade sorcerer status because he happens to be haunted by the powerful Rika Orimoto. To say that this is incorrect would be a dramatic understatement.

Trained in the art of the blade by Maki Zenin and armed with an impressive array of physical and mental combat abilities, Yuta would be a formidable force even without his sorcerer abilities, which are incredible. His boundless swathes of cursed energy were able to turn Rika into a powerful cursed spirit, and they also make him an unpredictable opponent who can use his energy to both attack and fortify as needed. He has also mastered the Black Flash technique, which enables him to augment physical hits with a reality-distorting spike of cursed energy.

However, his true power is the incredible amount of cursed energy available to him, which he tends to wield through his connection to both versions of Rika the cursed spirit. This also manifests with his innate technique, Copy, which allows him to simply copy techniques from other cursed technique wielders on the condition that Rika has eaten a part of them. Copy has left Yuta with the ability to use a massive number of different cursed techniques. He also has two powerful domain expansions and a dangerous extension technique called Jacob’s Ladder, which blasts opponents with a pillar of light.

2. Satoru Goro

While Yuji Itadori is stuck watching from the sidelines, one major “Jujutsu Kaisen” protagonist has proven time and time again that he can hang with the best … and beat most of them. Satoru Gojo is pretty much universally recognized as the strongest contemporary special grade jujutsu sorcerer out there, a great teacher, and possibly the most powerful guy in the world … if you ask him, at any rate.

Gojo is an amazing hand-to-hand fighter with physical abilities that outclass nearly anyone, and his cursed energy reserves seem to be nigh-boundless. Like Yuta Okkotsu, he’s a master of the Black Flash, and has a vast array of combat tricks up his sleeve.

We’d be here all day if attempted to list every single one of Gojo’s Cursed Techniques, so let’s stick with a quick recap. As a user of the Limitless technique, he can manipulate cursed energy on levels few others can comprehend, slow down time, and manipulate gravity and mass in various color-coded ways. He can use the same Curtain technique as Suguru Geto. He has a powerful domain expansion called Unlimited Void, and multiple anti-domain techniques to counter domain attacks. Oh, and there’s also Satoru Goro’s famed Six Eyes power, which allows the user to observe cursed energy and understand the abilities of other cursed technique users. No wonder the guy’s near the top of our food chain.

1. Ryomen Sukuna

Out of every Curse in “Jujutsu Kaisen,” one stands above the rest. The franchise doesn’t mince words about Ryomen Sukuna being the be-all and end-all of the show’s threats, from his “King of Curses” moniker to his seeming invincibility.

The strongest jujutsu sorcerer in all of history, Sukuna has acquired an indefinite lifespan by becoming a cursed object whose consciousness eventually manifests inside Yuji Itadori. Sukuna’s reincarnation arc and the circumstances around his 20 cursed fingers is a subject for its own article, but whenever the villain is in control of a body and wielding a decent chunk of his fuller potential, he’s the single mightiest thing out there, full stop.

Sukuna was the greatest sorcerer in an era when sorcerers were at their strongest, which says everything there is to know about his combat abilities. His innate techniques are powerful cut and fire attacks, and he eventually gains the power to summon animal-themed shadow spirits, and manipulate the shadows themselves. His domain expansion, Malevolent Shrine, summons a grim building where everything is subjected to brutal slicing attacks.

Disconcertingly, the four-armed Sukuna also has the ability to create mouths and eyes anywhere in his host body, which makes for some truly nightmarish visuals. Yuji’s connection to Sukuna is an important element of “Jujutsu Kaisen,” and the body horror element of that connection is one of the most memorable aspects of the series. There’s no question about Sukuna’s strength, compared to all other contenders.

Tragic North Carolina Street Brawl: US Marine Fatally Stabbed, Authorities Seek Key Suspect

0

A tragic incident unfolded in downtown Wilmington, North Carolina, early Sunday morning when a U.S. Marine was fatally stabbed during a tumultuous street brawl. Authorities have now released surveillance footage capturing an individual of interest connected to this deadly altercation.

The Marine, identified as 21-year-old Lance Cpl. Daniel Montano, was one of two individuals who sustained stab wounds in the chaos that erupted in the city center. Montano later succumbed to his injuries, as confirmed by both the Wilmington Police Department and his grieving family.

Police officers were dispatched around 2 a.m. following reports of multiple altercations in the 100 block of North Front Street. This area, located roughly 70 miles from Camp Lejeune, is a favored spot for Marines from the East Coast’s largest Marine Corps base.

Footage circulating on social media shows the police arriving and using pepper spray to control the situation before discovering Montano. He was found on the sidewalk, hunched over and bleeding profusely.

The video then shows a bystander helping Montano to a fence before he collapsed and tried to render aid as officers approached.

Police said the second male stabbing victim initially ran from the scene, but officers later found him and applied a tourniquet that helped save his life.

Montano was assigned to 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Division at Camp Lejeune, according to his family.

His relatives described him as a devoted Marine and a source of light in their lives.

“Daniel proudly served as a United States Marine, assigned to 1st Battalion, 2nd Marines Regiment at Camp Lejeune. He was not only dedicated to his country, but also deeply loved by his family. To us, he was more than a Marine — he was a son, a brother, and someone who brought so much light into our lives,” his family wrote on a GoFundMe page created to help cover funeral expenses.

The Wilmington Police Department said it “extends its condolences to Montano’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.”

Suspect seen in surveillance images wearing denim jacket, jeans and a durag in Wilmington stabbing case

The Wilmington Police Department released surveillance images of a person of interest in a downtown stabbing that left Lance Cpl. Daniel Montano, 21, dead. Authorities said the incident happened during a large early morning brawl on April 5, 2026. (Wilmington Police Department)

Investigators are searching for a person of interest seen in surveillance images released by the department.

Police described him as an adult Black male with a medium build, wearing a light-colored fleece-lined denim jacket and jeans, a pink shirt and white sneakers with blue and red accents. He was also wearing a dark blue head covering that appeared to be a durag, with long hair visible.

Police are asking anyone who was in the downtown area between midnight and 3 a.m. to come forward with information, including photos, videos or surveillance footage.

Police in North Carolina have come under scrutiny over their response, and the city’s police chief defended officers’ actions.

The video shows officers deploying pepper spray before approaching a bleeding victim during the early morning incident in Wilmington.

Wilmington Police Chief Ryan Zuidema said the footage does not reflect everything officers faced.

“They have no idea who is who,” Zuidema said during a Wednesday media briefing, according to the Wilmington StarNews. “They don’t know who’s a suspect, who’s a victim.”

Zuidema said the situation was fluid and dangerous, with officers trying to determine whether suspects were still nearby and whether there were more victims.

“They’re dealing with trying to assess what’s going on there,” he said.

The chief added that one officer had been exposed to pepper spray, while another called for gloves before helping the victim, in line with department protocol. Officers also called for emergency medical services at the scene, he said.

Authorities have not said what sparked the brawl.

Fox News Digital has requested further comment from the Wilmington Police Department.

In a separate nearby incident around the same time, a 22-year-old woman was stabbed and hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, police said.

Authorities arrested Jazya Muldrow-Green, 20, in connection with that case and charged her with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

Artemis II Astronauts Connect with Earth as NASA Gears Up for Historic Return

0

As the historic Artemis II Moon mission comes to a close, the four NASA astronauts aboard have taken a moment to send poignant messages to their families and future generations on Earth. This momentous mission has seen astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canadian Space Agency’s Jeremy Hansen sharing heartfelt messages before their journey back home.

On Thursday, these astronauts took the opportunity to express their gratitude and wisdom. Jeremy Hansen, in a touching message to his children, reflected on the mutual learning experience between himself and his kids. “I think it’s worth pointing out I learn as much, maybe more from you than you learn from me,” he noted, emphasizing the reciprocal nature of learning and growth.

Hansen also offered advice that resonates with everyone, especially the younger generation. He reminded them of the importance of approaching each day with effort and positivity. “All you have to do on any given day is just get up and do your best,” he said. “Try to find joy in your day and try to contribute in a meaningful and positive way.”

Further emphasizing the message, Hansen spoke about the unnecessary pressure people put on themselves to achieve perfection. “As humans, we put too much pressure on ourselves,” he reflected, encouraging a more compassionate and balanced approach to life.

The astronaut continued, saying that ‘as humans, we put too much pressure on ourselves’ to be perfect.

‘f you look at what we’re doing out here, it is far from perfection, but we are getting it done,’ he said.

The microphone was passed to Glover, who shared a touching message for his kids, one that also resonated deeply with the crew inside the spacecraft.

‘As we are on our way back from this dream of a mission, your mom and I look forward to supporting you, chasing and catching your own dreams,’ Glover said.

‘We spent years coaching you, but we are very much in that transition to being cheerleaders and just rooting for you in life.’

‘And to the future citizens out there, the same sentiment applies,’ Glover continued.

‘I hope this mission is giving you something that you can take and put in your pocket, or in your heart and mind that you keep with you.

‘But it’s not because we want you to see what we’ve tried to show you. It’s because we want you to take this and build a vocabulary to explain the world to us.’

Wiseman expressed deep gratitude to his daughters and calling his family’s support ‘unbelievable.’

‘I don’t think they knew what this mission really meant when we launched, but they have learned through the outpouring of public support, their friend’s support and family’s support,’ he explained.

‘Really, the world has come together. We have seen it and we have seen it through their eyes too.

‘And it has been a very proud moment for me as their father to see the joy in their expression and the way they email and communicate when we have private conferences.’

Koch gushed over her nine nieces and nephews, thanking them for their letters and love: ‘It truly touched my mission and I feel like you’re here with me.’

‘I love you and thank you for the amazing letters you wrote me, the amazing pictures you drew me,’ Koch said. ‘You had beautiful Earths and rockets, and they truly touched my mission.’

The team lifted off on April 1, marking humanity’s first mission to reach the Moon since 1972.

It was the furthest space exploration mission undertaken in human history, coming 57 years after American astronauts first set foot on the Moon during the Apollo 11 mission in 1969.

This monumental journey is expected to travel a maximum distance from Earth of 252,799 miles, crushing the Apollo 13 record by 4,144 miles.

The ten-day journey saw the astronauts launch into orbit and then separate their Orion spacecraft from the launch vehicle, break out of low-Earth orbit, circle the Moon and then return.

The historic flight is the first step in NASA’s new multi-step to land on the Moon by 2028 at the earliest.

NASA has said the Artemis campaign is about laying the groundwork for future Mars missions, harnessing space’s economic benefits and creating an enduring human presence beyond Earth.

It’s also—as is anything these days in the United States—about heading off China’s own lunar land grab: Washington wants to remain in front of Beijing’s own plans to put a man on the Moon by 2030.

But Artemis appears to be the opening step in a much more consequential infrastructure race that also pits Washington against Beijing—a giant leap toward an extraterrestrial AI future.

Buchanan County Schools Set for Exciting Transition to Southern Gap High School

BUCHANAN COUNTY, Va. (WJHL) — In just over a month, the high schools of Buchanan County will mark their final chapter as Grundy, Council, Hurley, and Twin Valley unite to form Southern Gap High School.

The new institution is a sprawling three-story complex featuring several wings, each designed for more than just ordinary classrooms. Notably, the east wing is dedicated to career and technical education (CTE).

“Each room here houses three workshops,” explained Tim Burge, senior construction manager with Skanska Integrated Solutions, as he gave News Channel 11 a tour. “For example, this is our welding shop. The current setup at the existing school has the classroom within the shop space, but here, they will have distinct areas for both instruction and hands-on practice.”

(Photo: WJHL)

Pamela Tester from Buchanan County Schools emphasized to News Channel 11 that the new facility offers comprehensive resources all under one roof.

“Previously, transportation issues sometimes forced students to choose between academic and vocational paths,” Tester noted. “Now, they can pursue academic courses alongside career-focused training, gaining vital skills for high-demand jobs right here within the same facility.”

From the CTE wing, students can go up to the third floor to access health care-related classrooms, such as a pharmacy tech program, a dental lab and a nursing program.

“They have a bathroom where they teach them how to move people, you know, from the wheelchair to the commode or to into a shower. All that training, everything’s here to do that,” Burge said.

The school property spans 200,322 square feet on what used to be a coal mining site. There will be a wall at the front of the school with black coal stones, and outside of the school will have several nods to the coal tradition as well.

“Seeing the markings inside the building and just the location of the school itself on the former coal mine will help the students remember where they came from and what their roots are, because we all grew up being supported by the mining industry,” Tester said.

Southern Gap High School is on pace to open by the beginning of the 2026-27 school year in August.

Negligence at Psychiatric Facility: Staff Ignored Dying Patient for 20 Minutes, Federal Report Reveals

In a deeply unsettling case from Washington, D.C., three psychiatric facility employees have been charged with criminal negligence after allegedly allowing a patient to die without intervening. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia has announced that Nelson Kuma, 37; Richard Hounnou, 45; and Norma Munoz-Bent, 68, are facing serious legal repercussions following the death of a 58-year-old patient identified as “G.W.”

These charges stem from an incident on April 24, 2020, at the Psychiatric Institute of Washington. On that day, G.W. experienced a critical medical emergency requiring resuscitation, according to Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. Despite the gravity of the situation, a subsequent event occurred two days later that has raised significant concerns.

Video evidence from April 26 captures a distressing scene: at 12:38 p.m., G.W. appears to begin breathing heavily while lying unclothed on a mattress placed on the floor. Despite the obvious signs of distress, the situation continued to deteriorate without adequate response.

“As a result of his being at this facility, he was one of those patients who was on what is called one-to-one care, which means that someone is supposed to be caring for him, watching for him, and every 15 minutes, someone is supposed to be doing a health check,” Pirro said in the news conference streamed by area CBS affiliate WUSA.

At one point, a hospital technician entered the room and observed that G.W. was struggling to breathe. Shockingly, as noted by Pirro, the technician failed to take any immediate action for a period of four minutes, a critical delay that could have made a significant difference in the outcome.

This tragic case highlights the severe consequences of negligence within healthcare settings, emphasizing the crucial responsibility of caregivers to respond promptly and effectively to emergencies. All three individuals have been arraigned following a grand jury indictment issued on March 31, as the case now moves forward through the legal system.

“A second tech enters the room; they fist bump each other, and for seven minutes, they have a very animated conversation,” she added. “It’s as though the patient on the floor, who was suffering from labored breathing, is not even there.”

About 10 minutes after the patient’s apparent labored breathing began, the registered nurse walks in. She “stares at the patient, she puts her hands on her hips,” but she doesn’t touch him before leaving the room a minute later.

The staff members ended up checking the patient’s blood but improperly, the U.S. attorney alleges. For at least 21 minutes, the patient reportedly “did not receive lifesaving measures,” and by the time proper efforts were taken, “it was too late.”

He died inside the hospital. It is unclear why the indictment took nearly six years to be brought against the defendants.

“Here’s the bottom line,” Pirro stated. “This trio did nothing to help this patient. They didn’t call a code blue, they didn’t check his pulse, they didn’t attempt CPR. They didn’t initiate resuscitation efforts. They did nothing. Instead, they chatted, they walked around, they didn’t touch him while he lay on a mattress, dying.”

A “code blue” announcement at a hospital is widely understood to mean a patient is experiencing an emergency that needs immediate medical attention.

The case was investigated by Disability Rights D.C., which Pirro thanked during her news conference. The organization said it “remain[s] concerned about patient safety and adequate psychiatric treatment at Psychiatric Institute of Washington and continue[s] to monitor the facility,” per Washington, D.C., NBC affiliate WRC.

The Psychiatric Institute of Washington says on its website that it “is a 130-bed facility with inpatient, intensive outpatient and partial hospitalization programs” offering “psychiatric assessments and comprehensive behavioral healthcare to children, adolescents and adults who are experiencing mental health and substance abuse issues.”

G.W.’s family has reportedly filed a lawsuit in his death.

After they were arraigned on Tuesday, Kuma, Hounnou, and Munoz-Bent were released pending trial. They are set to return to court on May 29.

Father Forgives: No Animosity Toward Convicted Man in Son’s Skydiving Tragedy

The bereaved father of a skydiver killed after getting tangled on a plane says he does not hold a grudge against the man convicted over the accident.
Experienced instructor Stephen Hoare, 37, and his tandem passenger, Alex Welling, 32, died while skydiving at Goulburn airport in NSW’s south on June 27, 2021.
The pair fell about 100 metres to their deaths after their equipment got snagged on a step that had recently been installed on the Cessna plane.

SafeWork NSW has filed charges against the Goulburn Flight Training Centre and its director, Attilio Giovanni Ferrara, commonly known as John Ferrara, for allegedly breaching workplace safety regulations. Both face two counts each related to these violations.

They were found guilty in the NSW District Court in March.

In his ruling, Judge Andrew Scotting identified the step in question as a “blatant and hazardous snag risk.”

During a sentencing session today, Frank Hoare, the father of the victim, exchanged a glance with Ferrara across the largely empty courtroom.

Despite the circumstances, Hoare expressed that he harbors “no animosity” towards Ferrara or Jim Czerwinski, the pilot responsible for installing the step and operating the aircraft on the incident day.

“Ultimately, there was no malicious intent,” Hoare stated softly.

The men’s families waited four years and 10 months for answers about the accident, a delay that felt like a dismissal of their lost lives, Hoare said.

“Losing our son … has shattered our lives in ways that words have never fully captured,” Hoare said.

“He was not just a name or statistic; he was our son and our joy.

“Every day [since] his death has been filled with a silence that should not exist and a grief that does not lessen with time.”

Hoare hoped the accident would lead to meaningful safety changes in the skydiving industry.

He called on the state coroner to hold an inquest so that formal recommendations could be made.

SafeWork’s barrister, Darien Nagle, urged the judge to consider the scale of the avoidable tragedy.

“The risk was avoidable, the risk was known,” Nagle said.

Evidence at the trial included a short GoPro video taken by a third solo skydiver, showing Welling grinning as he moved towards the open door of the plane while strapped to Hoare.

The footage showed a black strap getting caught on the protruding step, leaving the pair frantically dangling upside-down mid-air.

The pilot attempted several manoeuvres to free the men, including flying low over the airport while staff on the ground stood on top of a four-wheel drive to try and grab them.

The men fell when the plane returned to a higher altitude.

Ferrara made a “sincere and unqualified” apology to the men’s families in an affidavit read to the court.

Judge Scotting offered his condolences, saying he lost his sister in tragic circumstances.

“I understand that pain perhaps better than you might appreciate,” the judge said.

Ferrara will be sentenced on April 17.

Son of Pastor Charged in Third Case Involving Underage Relations at Ignite Life Center

0

Staff Report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – On April 7, Christian David Vargas, aged 22, was apprehended under a warrant accusing him of lewd and lascivious battery involving a minor under 16. This case marks the third accusation against Vargas, alleging sexual activity with girls below 16. Each incident reportedly took place at Ignite Life Center (404 NW 13th Avenue), where Vargas’s father, Mark Vega, served as the senior pastor.

Mark Vega faces charges for not reporting suspected child abuse, linked to four instances where he allegedly knew about young men engaging in sexual activities with minors at the church but neglected to inform authorities. Gabriel Hernandez received a five-year prison sentence, Noel Cruz was given three years of probation, and proceedings against Vargas are ongoing.

For more details on the initial two cases involving Vargas, click here.

The recent sworn complaint against Vargas details that the victim, then 15, reported the events to authorities in July 2023. The victim, along with her family, attended Ignite Life Center. She disclosed to a Gainesville Police Department detective that she and Vargas, who was 17 during the alleged incidents, had been exchanging “flirtatious and sexual” messages via Discord and Snapchat.

The victim said she first agreed to meet Vargas for sex in June 2021, and they met in a room at the church known as “The Furnace,” which had a couch. Three days later, she said, they met for sex again in “The Covenant Room,” which had cots and mattresses at the time because the church was preparing for the Ignite Life Summer Internship program. She said she met him again in “The Furnace” later that week, and they had sexual intercourse again; a few months later, they reportedly met to have sexual intercourse in a locked room above the main sanctuary, and the victim said that Vargas entered a code to enter the room. The victim said the last two incidents, in December 2021, occurred in the men’s bathroom near “The Furnace.”

The victim reportedly said that Vargas told her to buy condoms and to get a “Plan B” pill because his parents watched him “like a hawk,” so he could not make the purchases. She said their meetings were brief because Vargas had to “sneak away” to meet her.

The detective reported that in messages from December 2021, the victim told Vargas she didn’t want to have anything more to do with him, and Vargas reportedly pleaded with her to continue having sex with him; he reportedly offered to give her vapes (containing nicotine and/or marijuana) if she would continue having sex with him.

Vargas has been charged with lewd and lascivious battery with a victim under the age of 16. He has no local criminal history but is facing two other cases with similar charges. Judge Robert Groeb set bail at $250,000 in the warrant for Vargas’s arrest, and Vargas has posted bail.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law

Trump’s Proposed Military Action Against Iran Sparks War Crime Concerns

0

In a recent segment on MS NOW’s “The Briefing,” former Secretary of State John Kerry expressed his concerns over President Donald Trump’s alarming rhetoric regarding Iran. Kerry highlighted that Trump’s threat to annihilate Iran could be interpreted as a war crime.

During the show, host Jen Psaki addressed the issue, referencing Trump’s bold statement that “a whole civilization will die tonight,” which was made before the announcement of a ceasefire earlier in the week. Psaki remarked on the unprecedented nature of such language from a U.S. president, noting its potential long-lasting impact. She asked Kerry for his thoughts, given his extensive experience in diplomatic roles.

Kerry shared his shock and dismay, pointing out the incongruity of such threats coming from a leader who identifies as Christian, especially on Easter Sunday. He emphasized that such statements, broadcast to audiences worldwide, could tarnish the image of the U.S. presidency. Kerry recalled America’s historical role in liberating Europe from fascism, a stark contrast to the notion of threatening an entire civilization, which he equated to actions of a war criminal. Such rhetoric, he argued, stands in direct opposition to international norms and the values the country has long championed.
