G7 Ministers Convene for Crucial Economic Discussions Amid Growing Calls for Transparency on US Military Strategies

0

In brief:

  • Ministers from G7 countries are set to meet on Monday to discuss the economic fallout of the war in the Middle East.
  • World governments want greater clarity from the US on its war aims, and how it quickly it plans to end the conflict.

Ministers from the Group of Seven (G7) nations are set to convene on Monday to discuss the economic fallout from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, according to the French government. This meeting comes amid a sharp increase in oil and gas prices.

In late February, the United States and Israel carried out military strikes on Iran, prompting Tehran to retaliate by targeting key oil-exporting nations in the region and disrupting shipments through the Gulf.

These actions have significantly tightened supply chains, leading to a surge in oil and natural gas prices and affecting numerous industries worldwide.

French Finance Minister Roland Lescure announced that the G7 discussions will take place via videoconference. The meeting will feature participation from energy and finance ministers, central bank leaders, and heads of other international organizations.

“There are already differences in the responses largely linked to differences in exposure to the crisis,” Lescure told a news conference on Friday, stressing that Asia was particularly exposed to the turmoil.

“That is one of the reasons why we wanted to convene a G7 of finance, energy and central banks,” he said.

He added that the idea was to exchange views on the impact on financial markets and the economy, later telling local media it was the first time in half a century the G7 had used this format.

The G7, an informal grouping of the US, Canada, Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Japan, helps shape policy debates in the world’s wealthiest nations.

The United States has sought support from the group to help halt Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz shipping route.

After a meeting last week, G7 foreign ministers said it was an “absolute necessity” for Iran to re-establish free passage through the strait and called for an end to attacks on civilian infrastructure.

Governments under pressure

Under increasing pressure, many governments have rolled out measures to limit the impact of supply difficulties and soaring energy prices.

But a lack of clarity over US war aims, along with uncertainty over the potential length of the conflict and the spread of hostilities, has left governments scrambling for coherent responses.

On Monday, the federal government announced the long-standing fuel excise would be halved for three months as concerns around fuel supply grow. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese himself brought up the same lack of certainty as to how long the conflict could continue.

“I want to see more certainty in what the objectives of the war are, and I want to see a de-escalation,” Albanese told journalists during a press conference about changes to the fuel excise.

US officials, including President Donald Trump, have said their goals in the war are almost achieved, but thousands of US personnel have been sent to the region in an unprecedented military build-up.

Activists based outside Iran say the US-Israeli campaign has killed more than 3,000 people in the country, over half of them civilians, while Lebanese officials have said more than 1,000 have been killed there since Israel began attacking its territory in retaliation for Hezbollah attacks on 2 March.

Officials in Israel and countries across the Gulf have also reported much smaller numbers of casualties.

FBI Reveals Hezbollah-Inspired Motive in Michigan Synagogue Attack: Suspect Aimed for Mass Casualty

0

Federal investigators revealed on Monday that the man who crashed his pickup truck into a synagogue in Michigan earlier this month was motivated and radicalized by Hezbollah, a terrorist organization backed by Iran. His intent was reportedly to inflict maximum harm on the Jewish community.

The suspect, identified as Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, attempted to carry out a large-scale attack on March 12, specifically choosing a facility in West Bloomfield where more than 100 children were present. He was ultimately stopped and fatally shot by responding officers. According to local officials, Ghazali’s actions were reportedly fueled by the loss of several family members during Lebanon’s conflict with Israel.

In preparation for the attack, Ghazali allegedly modified his truck with booby traps, fireworks, explosives, and significant quantities of gasoline. Prior to crashing into the building, he reportedly waited in the parking lot of Temple Israel, sending videos to his sister in Lebanon. The footage showed him armed and listening to militant anthems.

“This is the largest gathering of Israelis in the state of Michigan in the United States. I have booby-trapped the car. I will forcibly enter and start shooting them. God willing, I will kill as many of them as I possibly can,” Ghazali stated in one of the videos, according to Jennifer Runyon, the Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Detroit office.

West Bloomfield, Michigan synagogue where shooting was reported

Authorities were called to Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan, on March 12, after the suspect drove into the synagogue and opened fire, leading to his subsequent shooting by security personnel.

James Gorgon, U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan, added that had the attacker survived, he would have been charged with providing “material support” to Hezbollah for effectively providing himself as the weapon aimed at Michigan’s largest Jewish temple.

According to investigators, Ghazali reportedly consumed pro-Hezbollah and Iranian militant propaganda for months leading up to the attack, ultimately planning what he called a “special operation” aimed at causing mass casualties.

He allegedly created a Facebook album titled “Vengeance,” filled with images of Hezbollah leaders and militant quotes, and also sent his sister a photo of an Israeli flag covered up with yellow paint, a color often used to represent loyalty and sacrifice to Hezbollah.

“You killed the Ali and Hussein of our time. We will avenge their blood,” one of his Facebook status posts said hours before the attack, referencing the overseas deaths of his family members.

“We will seek retribution for their sacred blood,” another post said. “Israel is a cancerous, malignant growth. Israel is pure evil and the oppressors will soon know what kind of end they will meet.”

Within three days prior to the attack, Ghazali researched local synagogues, targeting what he called “the largest gathering of Israelis in Michigan,” according to the officials. He reportedly purchased an AR-style rifle, 300 rounds of ammunition, and more than $2,200 worth of fireworks.

He filled collapsible containers with roughly 35 gallons of gasoline across multiple trips to use as an explosive accelerant in his truck, adding fireworks to booby-trap the vehicle before ramming it into the synagogue.

Officials added that just minutes before launching the attack, Ghazali sat in the Temple Israel parking lot and sent his sister in Lebanon 19 videos, photos and messages affirming his commitment to a mass terrorist plan.

During the attack, the suspect ultimately exchanged gunfire with synagogue security and ignited the explosives inside his vehicle after ramming into the temple doors at a high speed.

While the assailant acted alone, officials emphasized that he methodically followed Hezbollah’s propaganda directives to carry out the violence.

“I’ve seen some odd attempts to explain away or even lessen this terrorist attack by claiming that he was an isolated lone wolf, but that is misleading,” Gorgon said. “Terrorist propaganda is designed to activate the so-called lone wolf to act on behalf of the terrorist organization.”

“I am convinced that my office would prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he committed the federal crime of providing material support to Hezbollah,” he added.

Officials noted that the attacker was not on any terrorist watch list and had never been the subject of an FBI investigation before the attack.

No evidence of co-conspirators or ongoing threats were found, investigators said.

“We stand firmly with our Jewish community. We remain unwavering in our commitment to protect them and all members of our community, from those who seek to do harm,” West Bloomfield Police Chief Dale Young said.

Desperate Defendant Allegedly Threatens Judge: ‘Nothing to Lose, Might as Well Pick Up a Homicide

A Wisconsin man, already in custody, has reportedly found himself in deeper legal trouble after allegedly threatening a judge.

Man allegedly threatened judge

Background: Racine County Court in Racine, Wis. (Google Maps). Inset: Richard Paul (Racine County Sheriff”s Office).

Richard Paul, aged 68, was detained at Racine County Jail for failing to update his sex offender registration. According to a criminal complaint cited by Fox affiliate WITI, Paul allegedly threatened to kill the judge who mandated his continued detention. This incident reportedly unfolded after a correctional officer informed him he could not access printouts related to his past court cases.

The complaint details how, on March 25, Paul expressed his frustration to the officer, citing an “indifference” with the judge who insisted he remain jailed until his trial. His agitation reportedly escalated as he told the officer, “I’m about to just get totally belligerent.”

Further, the complaint states that Paul directed vulgar language toward the judge, referring to her in derogatory terms. WITI’s report highlights Paul’s extensive criminal history, noting that he has been incarcerated almost annually since 1980. Paul purportedly dismissed any potential repercussions by telling the officer, “there ain’t nothing that you can threaten me with that I ain’t been through already.”

According to the complaint, Paul told the officer that he “done told the b— to go f— herself.” WITI reported that Paul, a convicted sex offender, has been incarcerated almost every year since 1980. Paul reportedly told the officer that “there ain’t nothing that you can threaten me with that I ain’t been through already.”

The officer told Paul that instead of printouts, he could view his case information on a tablet. This accommodation did not seem to appease Paul, who told the officer, “That’s telling me then I might as well go in and pick up a homicide. I’ve got nothing to lose.”

Paul’s alleged rhetoric against the judge continued and escalated. According to the complaint, Paul said that when he went to the Racine County Circuit Court for his scheduled appearance on March 31, “I’m gunning down. And y’all going to be picking up a body out that f—ing courtroom.”

The comments by Paul were captured by the correctional officer’s body camera.

Police charged Paul with making a threat to cause bodily harm to certain individuals involved with a court or legal system. He remains in custody at the Racine County Jail and is scheduled to appear in court in connection with the threat charge on Monday.

Iconic Viral Arrest Footage Preserved in National Film and Sound Archive for Posterity

Ladies and gentlemen, witness a quintessential piece of Australiana unfold.

A 1991 arrest scene outside a Brisbane Chinatown restaurant, which later gained global fame as one of the pioneering viral video memes, has earned its place among the official Sounds of Australia.

On the afternoon of August 11 that year, journalists were alerted to a significant police operation at the China Sea restaurant in Fortitude Valley.

Jack Karlson’s arrest outside a Brisbane restaurant in 1991 has been immortalised. (9News)

According to initial reports by Seven, authorities anticipated capturing one of Australia’s most elusive fugitives enjoying a meal there.

Instead, they encountered Jack Karlson.

It’s never quite been clear why Karlson, a bit-part actor who had done time behind bars, was subjected to a police arrest outside the restaurant.

But his outraged response ultimately made him a legend.

“I’m under what?” he asked the officers, before struggling against their attempts to cuff him and force him into a car.

In a ringing baritone, Karlson declared to the crowd, “This… is… democracy manifest”.

He also taunted the arresting officers, remarking to one: “Ah yes – I see you know your judo well”.

And it’s also hard to forget his furious bellow: “Take your hand off my penis!”

But perhaps what sealed Karlson’s immortality came when he asked – perhaps rhetorically, “What is the charge? Eating a meal? A succulent Chinese meal?”

The original footage was uploaded to the then-nascent video sharing site YouTube by Nine presentation co-ordinator and tape operator Russell Furman found, who found the tapes in 2009.

Seen and shared on the same site by US content creator Ray William Johnson in 2013, the video exploded, being viewed millions of times all over the world.

Karlson, who died in 2024, also returned to the limelight, conducting multiple interviews on the subject, and admitting he wasn’t sure what prompted the famous outburst.

Now, the original Seven news broadcast has been named one of nine Sounds of Australia for 2026 by the National Film and Sound Archive.

Others included Scar by Missy Higgins, Rosie Batty’s Australian of the Year acceptance speech, the Reading Writing Hotline jingle, and the sound of a PB/5 pedestrian crossing button.

Prevent the Surge: Easy Strategies to Combat America’s Growing Kidney Stone Crisis

0

Imagine experiencing a sharp, sudden pain in your back, accompanied by intense nausea and vomiting to the point of collapse. This is the harsh reality faced by 600,000 Americans yearly due to kidney stones—small, stone-like formations of minerals within the urinary tract. Alarmingly, experts warn that the prevalence of this condition is on the rise.

Previously associated with middle-aged individuals, kidney stones are now more frequently diagnosed in people in their 20s and 30s. According to Dr. Ryan Steinberg, a urologist at the University of Iowa Health Care, the demographic shift is noticeable. “In the past, initial cases appeared in middle age,” he remarked. “Today, we’re encountering a growing number of younger patients experiencing this issue.”

The increase in cases is significant. Currently, about 11 percent of men and nine percent of women will develop kidney stones, a stark rise from just four percent in the late 1970s. This condition leads to more than 500,000 emergency room visits each year.

‘People used to present for the first time in middle age,’ said Dr Ryan Steinberg, a urologist at the University of Iowa Health Care. ‘Now we are seeing more and more younger patients affected.’

The rise has been dramatic. Around 11 percent of men and nine percent of women now develop kidney stones, up from just four percent in the late 1970s. They account for more than 500,000 emergency visits every year.

Experts say the shift is being driven by modern diets. Particularly, ultra-processed foods high in salt, which increases calcium in the urine and promotes stone formation, coupled with a decline in fruits and vegetables that naturally help prevent crystals from clumping.

Additionally, sugary drinks – often replacing water – leave urine more concentrated, allowing minerals to harden into stones.

‘Kidney stones have been on the rise for a variety of reasons, especially in the 12 to 30 age group,’ said Dr George Ellis, a New York-based urologic surgeon. ‘Children are consuming fewer citrate-containing fruits and vegetables, which helps prevent stones. Family history [also] plays a significant role in developing stones at a younger age.’

For those who develop kidney stones, the experience can be brutal.

On a Reddit forum for kidney stone sufferers, one patient wrote of an acute flare-up: ‘I couldn’t really move. I literally fell forward [off] the toilet. I was in so much pain and I couldn’t stand up. I couldn’t stop shaking from pain. I was white as a sheet. I filled one sick bag after another with vomit.’

Another commented: ‘[The] pain was affecting my ability to walk and move. By the time I got to the hospital, the pain was at its peak. Intense agony, dizziness and vomiting.’

A TikTok user named Darby Lou said it took her a ‘month of hell’ to finally pass her kidney stone.

Bill, from South Carolina, who chose to withhold his last name when speaking to the Daily Mail, was on the beach when he first felt the pain – a sharp, deep ache in his side that quickly became unbearable.

‘I thought if I could get home I might feel better, but pain only got worse,’ he said.

He tried lying down, then curling into the fetal position, but nothing helped.

‘So I did laps around the house and felt this helped a bit to ease the pain,’ he continued.

Within an hour, he was on his way to the hospital.

The reason the pain of kidney stones is so severe lies in what is happening inside the body.

Kidneys filter waste from the blood, producing urine to carry it out. But when certain minerals from food and drink – most commonly calcium and oxalate – become too concentrated in the urine, they can begin to crystallize.

Normally, these tiny crystals are flushed out without notice. But when urine is concentrated – often due to dehydration – they can stick together and grow. Over time, they form hard, jagged stones.

Trouble begins when a stone moves into the ureter. The tube is narrow, and as the stone scrapes along its lining or blocks it entirely, pressure builds behind it in the kidney.

That is what triggers the hallmark symptom: intense, wave-like pain that radiates from the lower back to the groin, often leaving sufferers pacing, sweating and unable to find relief.

Some notice blood in their urine or feel a constant urge to urinate despite passing very little. Others experience nausea so severe that they begin vomiting.

In Bill’s case, doctors confirmed he had a stone lodged in his ureter, where it was blocking the normal flow of urine.

Because of its size and position, they decided it might pass on its own through his urine without the need for surgery.

Kidney stones vary in shape, size and makeup. Calcium kidney stones, including calcium oxalate and calcium phosphate stones, are some of the most common types

Dr George Ellis, a urologic surgeon, notes that kidney stones are rising fastest among people aged 12 to 30 due to poor diet, inadequate hydration, rising obesity and family history - but emphasizes that proper hydration and diet can reverse the trend

Dr George Ellis, a urologic surgeon, notes that kidney stones are rising fastest among people aged 12 to 30 due to poor diet, inadequate hydration, rising obesity and family history – but emphasizes that proper hydration and diet can reverse the trend

What followed was a three-and-a-half-week ordeal of pain and waiting as the stone slowly made its way through his system.

‘It actually came down to me passing it hours before the set surgery time,’ he said.

Diet plays a central role in whether these stones form in the first place, and Bill believes his own habits were a major factor.

He told the Daily Mail that he rarely drank water, instead consuming large amounts of tea each day, alongside snacks such as almonds and cashews – foods high in oxalate, a key component of the most common type of kidney stone.

‘I would drink 64 to 80 ounces of unsweetened tea during the day with a cup or two of hot tea at night,’ he said.

Experts say this kind of pattern is increasingly common.

‘A high-sodium diet can trigger kidney stones because it increases the amount of calcium in your urine,’ Dr Howard LeWine, a practicing internist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts and chief medical editor at Harvard Health Publishing, said. ‘So, a low-sodium diet is recommended for the stone-prone.

‘Beets, chocolate, spinach, rhubarb, tea and most nuts are rich in oxalate. People who form calcium oxalate stones should limit these foods.

‘The extra oxalate is excreted in the urine, where it can combine with urinary calcium. If you suffer from calcium oxalate stones, your doctor may advise you to avoid these foods, or to consume them in smaller amounts.’

Sugary drinks are known to compound the problem by replacing water in the urine, leaving it more concentrated.

Add in rising obesity levels and sedentary lifestyles – both of which alter urine chemistry – and the conditions are ideal for stones to develop.

The trend is now being seen across large population studies. Research has shown that people with higher body mass index are significantly more likely to develop kidney stones.

In one study of more than 84,000 post-menopausal women, those with higher BMIs had a 30 percent increased risk compared with those in the ‘normal’ range.

Physical inactivity also plays a role.

In the same study, women who exercised even at low levels had a 16 percent lower risk of developing stones, while those who were most active cut their risk by nearly a third.

NIH-funded research has shown that weight changes the composition of urine, increasing levels of substances such as oxalate, sodium and uric acid that contribute to stone formation.

Despite the severity of the pain they cause, kidney stones are often preventable.

The most effective step in prevention is also the simplest: drink more water.

Keeping urine diluted helps prevent minerals from reaching the concentrations needed to form crystals.

Dietary changes can also make a significant difference. Experts recommend reducing salt intake – ideally to no more than 2,300mg a day, and lower for those prone to stones – while increasing fruit and vegetable consumption.

Foods rich in potassium and citrate, including citrus fruits, bananas, tomatoes and root vegetables, can help prevent crystals from forming or sticking together.

Regular physical activity further reduces risk by improving overall metabolic health.

The rise in kidney stones closely mirrors broader changes in diet and lifestyle (increased consumption of ultra-processed foods and declining physical activity), but it also means the trend is, to a large extent, reversible.

When asked to describe the pain he endured in one word, Bill called it ‘excruciating.’ It’s not something he’d wish on anyone, and, luckily, he hasn’t had another kidney stone since.

‘It took about four weeks to be back to normal,’ he told the Daily Mail.

‘Since then, I have eliminated the tea altogether and now drink as much water as I can.’

Ellis recommended a straightforward approach for anyone who may be concerned. It includes keeping urine light yellow or clear with plenty of fluids, cutting back on processed foods and fast food to reduce salt, loading up on potassium and citrate-rich fruits and vegetables and don’t skip calcium – just avoid pairing dairy with high-salt meals.

  • The Houthis have once again emerged, raising fears of further disruptions to shipping routes.
  • Experts say they are also looking to deter a US ground invasion and could create pain for Donald Trump.

In a strategic move potentially complicating U.S. military operations and extending the Middle Eastern conflict, a significant Iranian ally has initiated strikes against Israel, specialists suggest.

The Houthis, aligned with Iran, entered the fray on Saturday, launching an initial assault on Israel. This escalation raises concerns about potential threats to the Bab al-Mandab Strait, another crucial maritime passage in the region.

Amidst this turmoil, the oil market faces significant challenges, particularly as the Strait of Hormuz—an essential corridor on Iran’s southern frontier that facilitates the transit of about 20% of global oil and gas—faces severe restrictions.

The recent aggression follows a series of retaliatory actions between the Houthis and the United States, intensifying since the escalation of the Hamas-Israel conflict on October 7, 2023. The Houthis have specifically targeted vessels associated with Israel, aligning themselves with Palestinian interests.

This tactic of creating instability has evolved with the Houthis, who have extended their reach to broader attacks on Red Sea shipping activities.

The US, at times helped by the UK, responded with naval defence and airstrikes, leading to an ongoing tit-for-tat conflict.

A ceasefire between the Houthis and the US, brokered by Oman in May last year brought an end to nearly two years of attacks on ships.

A separate Houthi ceasefire with Israel, agreed in October after Israel agreed to a ceasefire with Hamas, now appears to be shattered.

The Houthis have once again emerged, raising fears of further disruptions to shipping routes and complicating the ongoing conflict and tenuous peace deals in the region.

Israeli authorities said on Sunday that they had intercepted two drones launched from Yemen.

Who are the Houthis?

The Houthis are a “powerful ally” of Iran, and their founding movement, consisting of political and military arms, started in the 1990s.

Three decades on, the rebel group-turned-governing force — now holding swathes of Northern Yemen — is deeply involved in long-running conflicts with regional and global implications.

Historically, the Houthi’s primary point of conflict has been with Yemen’s internationally recognised government, which it seeks to overthrow. The ongoing civil war between the two parties, alongside a gradually escalating conflict between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia, has fuelled one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises in Yemen.

The group was designated as a terrorist organisation by the Australian government in 2024 after a series of attacks on ships in the Red Sea.

Since October 2023, they’ve also been involved in attacks on shipping in the Red Sea, which Hisham Al-Omeisy, a senior Yemen advisor at the European Institute of Peace, said was perhaps their most effective destabilising strategy in the region.

“Since they were last attacked, the Houthis have had time to regroup and rebuild their stockpiles, now they’re back and they are ready to fight,” he told ABC radio on Monday morning.

“By attacking the Bab al-Mandab Strait, they would create a second front in the war. They haven’t shut down the Strait yet, but that could be the next escalatory step.”

The Strait acts as the southern entry/exit point for the Red Sea, leading directly to the Suez Canal, making it essential for trade between Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

A high volume of petroleum and natural gas travels through this strait, making it one of the world’s most significant oil transit chokepoints.

This economic traffic makes it a desirable target for the Houthis, Al-Omeisy said, as the “powerful ally of Iran” looks to deter further US and Israeli attacks in the region.

While it’s not immediately clear how badly their conflict with the US and Israel depleted the Houthis, Israel killed a dozen members of their senior leadership.

In August, Israel killed the Houthi prime minister, the chief of staff and several cabinet ministers in an airstrike, but Abdul Malik Al-Houthi, the movement’s leader, was not there.

Why get involved now?

The Houthis’ weekend strike against Israel marked four weeks of conflict since the US and Israel attacked Iran on 28 February.

Al-Omeisy said their decision to enter the war would be “carefully and strategically” timed and would be looking to achieve two goals.

Firstly, they want to retaliate against Israel in support of Iran and the “broader Muslim cause”, he explained, noting the Houthis have links to Shia Islam.

They are also looking to deter a US invasion.

“They are also wary that the US has threatened to put boots on the ground in Iran, so firing rockets at Israel signals they are willing to disrupt global trade and oil shipments if they choose to shut down the Strait,” he said.

The Washington Post reported on Sunday that the Pentagon is preparing for weeks of ground operations in Iran. The plans could involve raids by special operations and conventional infantry troops, the Post reported, citing US officials.

Washington has dispatched thousands of marines to the Middle East, with the first of two contingents arriving on Friday aboard an amphibious assault ship, the US military has said.

Director of Middle East Studies Forum at Deakin University, Shahram Akbarzadeh, said the Houthis’ attack on Israel could “significantly expand the conflict”.

“Iran had already tried to regionalise the war to put pressure on the United States through economic pain,” he told SBS News.

“Now, if [the] Houthis also enter the war, that will seriously affect the flow of oil through the Red Sea, and that will triple the amount of pressure on [US President Donald] Trump to end the war.”

Long-term effects

While the Houthis were willing to attack Israel, Akbarzadeh suspected that the group would not follow Iran’s strategy of attacking neighbouring Gulf states.

Since 28 February, Iran has attacked several of its neighbouring countries, disrupting air travel and putting pressure on other governments to intercede in the ongoing conflict.

“The Houthis, however, are likely to target US assets, like military bases throughout the region, and to hit ships in the Red Sea,” he said.

“That will significantly increase pressure on Trump to address the financial implications, consequences, and the rise in oil prices that is affecting the global economy, and it’s affecting Trump’s home base.”

Akbarzedah said that this would further pressure Trump to withdraw from the Middle East and to “end the war quickly”.

“He can simply declare victory and say he has achieved his objectives and walk away from the war,” he said.

“He has destroyed Iran’s Navy, Iran’s Air Force, and he has decapitated Iranian leadership; he can list those as evidence of his success and victory that they have achieved on the battlefield.”

Al-Omeisy said Trump would likely threaten the Houthis, as in years past, and attempt to wipe them out through military action rather than retreat.

But the group’s leadership structure is “robust” and could withstand even the military might of the US.

“They’ve (the Houthis) have had these plans in place for the longest time, being a militia,” he said.

“They understand that the leadership can be taken out at any given time, and that’s why they have a succession plan in place that goes seven layers deep.”

Teacher of the Year Finalist Sentenced to 14 Years for Inappropriate Relationship with Student

A former Colorado educator, once considered a contender for the 2025 state Teacher of the Year, has been sentenced to 14 years in prison following allegations of a sexual relationship with a student, as well as continued contact with the student after legal charges were filed against her.

Tera Johnson-Swartz, 45, who previously taught at STEM School Highlands Ranch and is also a writer, admitted guilt to charges of sexual exploitation of a child and cybercrime, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office reported on March 19. The cybercrime charge was linked to her ongoing communication with the student involved.

The case came to light when the parents of a 16-year-old student discovered text messages containing sexual content in January 2025, as detailed by The Denver Post.

Johnson-Swartz, who had been acknowledged as one of the seven finalists for Colorado’s Teacher of the Year just five months prior to the investigation, faced charges in two distinct cases. The first case arose from a grand jury inquiry into the alleged relationship in early 2025, while the second related to her continued interactions with the student.

Documents show the relationship started with texting but quickly escalated, with Johnson-Swartz giving the student cigarettes, letting him use her marijuana vape pen, and eventually engaging in a physical relationship, the local outlet reported.

She was reportedly suspended from the school once the allegations surfaced and was later fired and banned from campus.

Less than a month later, the involved student was caught on camera leaving campus and getting into a car that matched Johnson-Swartz’s vehicle, according to CBS. The teen reportedly admitted to investigators that his former teacher had picked him up and driven him to a nearby neighborhood.

The incident sparked an investigation, and in February 2025, detectives with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Special Victims Unit arrested Johnson-Swartz on charges of kidnapping and contributing to the delinquency of a minor in connection with an inappropriate relationship with a student.

Johnson-Swartz secured a $100,000 bond with the assistance of a professional bondsman and was released the following day, the outlet said.

However, over the Fourth of July weekend that year, authorities were alerted by the student’s parents, who reported that the two were still in contact, according to CBS.

The two reportedly encountered one another for two consecutive nights and Johnson-Swartz began calling and texting in the days that followed.

Johnson-Swartz was arrested again. In addition to her prison sentence, she was reportedly ordered to complete six years of sex offender probation after her release, which includes registering as a convicted sex offender.

Yolanda Renée King Shines at Prom and Debutante Ball: MLK’s Legacy Continues to Inspire

Yolanda Renée King recently experienced an exciting and memorable prom season.

The 17-year-old, who holds the distinction of being the sole grandchild of civil rights icons Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, celebrated her senior prom on Saturday. The festivities didn’t end there; the very next day, she participated in a debutante ball.

“Prom last night … Debutante Ball tonight…,” wrote Yolanda’s mother, Arndrea Waters King, in a caption accompanying a video. The clip features Yolanda enjoying a dance with her father, Martin Luther King III.

The video, shared with the caption “sound on,” captures the touching moment of a father-daughter dance.

Viewers online quickly chimed in, expressing amazement at how swiftly Yolanda has matured over the years.

“Omg! She looks stunning and all grown up. God bless her,” one person said.

Another added, “She’s all grown up… have loved her since she gave that incredible speech at March for Our Lives!”

At just 9 years old, Yolanda took the stage at the March for Our Lives rally in Washington, D.C., where she delivered a speech calling for an end to gun violence.

Since then, she has continued to step into her own while honoring her family’s legacy.

During a recent interview with ABC News, Yolanda addressed concerns about the direction of voting legislation as the Supreme Court considers potential changes.

“I certainly feel concerned about the state in which we are going,” she said. “In terms of the status of the legacy now, I think that unfortunately, in order for the people to wake up, I think that we have to see certain aspects of the legacy being taken away and be under attack.”

While she acknowledged the significance of honoring her grandfather with a national holiday, she emphasized that the work tied to his legacy is ongoing.

“I think it is important that we realize that a part of his legacy and a part of our responsibility is to continue carrying on what he left behind,” she added. “And I believe that currently, the state of our world and seeing certain things being under attack will awaken certain people.”

In addition to being a young activist, she is an author. In 2023, Yolanda released her children’s book, We Dream a World: Carrying the Light from My Grandparents. It draws on lessons from her family while encouraging young readers to find their own voice.

Prosecutor Reveals Shocking Events Leading to Family Tragedy After Mom’s Deadly ‘Surprise

Inset: Jenna Strouble (Will County Jail). Background: The home where Strouble allegedly killed Stacy Forde and Patrick Forde (WLS).

An Indiana woman, aged 30, stands accused of luring her intermittently estranged boyfriend to a late-night rendezvous in Illinois, where she allegedly executed him in her vehicle before proceeding to his parents’ residence and fatally shooting them as well.

According to court documents, prosecutors claim Jenna Strouble embarked on the evening of March 23 armed with a loaded Glock, intending to kill Jake Lambert along with his parents, 54-year-old Stacy Forde and 55-year-old Patrick Forde. Strouble reportedly admitted to investigators her uncertainty about whether she would have the courage to follow through, as reported by Patch, referencing the prosecutors’ documentation. After the alleged triple homicide, Strouble returned to her Indiana residence, where her young children, ages 3 and 4, were present. She was apprehended last week and faces charges of three counts of first-degree murder.

Upon being detained, Strouble reportedly provided a detailed confession of the murders. She recounted to police that she collected Lambert between 11 and 11:30 p.m., drove him around before stopping, and informed him of a “surprise,” proposing to give him a back massage, as outlined in the court documents.

She instructed Lambert to adjust his seat, remove his shirt, and lay face down. After massaging his back for approximately 20 minutes, she allegedly retrieved a Glock handgun from under the seat following his critique of her massage technique, as stated by prosecutors.

Strouble is accused of holding the gun to the back of Lambert’s head for approximately eight minutes, intermittently contemplating setting it aside and postponing the act, before ultimately deciding to fire, delivering a fatal shot to the back of his head.

After shooting Lambert, Strouble allegedly smoked a cigarette and drove to his parents’ home, where she struggled to get inside before Patrick Forde opened the door.

“As soon as he did, she began shooting him, firing from the porch and then continuing as she entered the house,” the report states.

Strouble then allegedly shot and killed Stacy Forde as she was coming downstairs to check on the cause of the commotion.

Prosecutors say Strouble later told police she had also considered killing her own parents but “didn’t think she could go through with it.” The motion further alleges she had a history of suicidal and homicidal thoughts, including an incident in which she considered jumping out of a window while holding her children.

Authorities also said Strouble purchased the firearm in December “specifically for this plan” and had acquired a suppressor online. A search of her bedroom uncovered additional suppressors and ammunition, prosecutors said.

Strouble allegedly provided little motive beyond saying she disliked how Lambert spoke to their children and viewed his parents as “overbearing,” according to the filing.

As Law&Crime previously reported, authorities described the killings as a targeted, domestic-related incident between Strouble and Lambert, who were described as having “an on/off” romantic relationship. Investigators said Strouble made incriminating statements after the slayings, and a firearm believed to have been used in the killings was recovered from her Indiana home.

Since her arrest in Indiana, Strouble waived extradition and was transferred to Illinois to face murder charges. She is currently being housed at the Will County Jail and is scheduled to appear in court again for a pretrial detention hearing on Monday morning.
