Meisha Porter Steps Back from Chicago Public Schools CEO Race, Spotlight Shifts to Macquline King and Sito Narcisse

0

In Chicago, the hunt for a new leader of the city’s public school system has narrowed to two contenders after one hopeful withdrew from the race.

Amid this development, there are increasing demands for the mayor to expedite the appointment of a permanent CEO.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

The previous CEO, Pedro Martinez, vacated his position when his contract concluded in June of last year, leading to Macquline King stepping in as interim CEO.

Many are now urging the mayor to consider King for the role on a long-term basis.

As the Board of Education approaches the end of this academic year and begins planning for the next, the question of who will assume the role of permanent CEO remains unresolved.

For the last nine months, King has served in that role, having come up through the ranks at CPS. And supporters say it’s time for her to get the job as the next CEO.

“In her first 60 days as interim CEO, she balanced probably one of the most challenging budgets that CPS has ever endured, with no school cut days, no furlough days, and we did not have to take out a high-interest loan,” Education Committee member Alderman Stephanie Coleman said.

Coleman says those are good reasons for King to be the next CEO.

Last week, the board named three finalists that included King.

Also in the running is Sito Narcisse, who most recently served as superintendent of East Baton Rouge Public Schools.

Meisha Porter, who served as New York City Schools chancellor, withdrew her name after it became public.

“Well, I think she got a close look at the situation we have here, what a mess,” 19th Ward Alderman Matt O’Shea said. “Who would want to come here and take this on?”

There are also calls from Latino leaders in the city for CPS to choose a new CEO with deep experience serving Latinos and immigrants.

The president of the Latino Policy Forum released a statement that said in part, “Nearly half of Chicago Public Schools students are Latino and a significant and growing number are English Learners. … Children and families deserve to see themselves in their leaders. They also deserve leaders who see them, know them, and fight for them.”

“I do hope, within a very short time period, especially considering that one of the candidates has dropped out of the running for CPS leadership, I do hope that the mayor and this administration and the board makes a decision sooner rather than later,” Coleman said.

The two remaining finalists will interview with Mayor Brandon Johnson as well as a community panel of educators, parents and students. But what’s not clear is how quickly that will happen and how soon the Board could meet to vote on a new CEO.

Industry Leaders Urge Fuel Exemption Amid COVID-19 Resurgence, Citing Threats to New Construction Projects

0

Key Points

  • The war in the Middle East is causing concern about the impact on fuel-reliant industries.
  • The nation’s peak body for the building and construction sector says the industry is “increasingly alarmed” about higher costs.

The construction industry is on high alert as rising fuel prices evoke memories of the COVID-19 pandemic, when supply chain disruptions led to skyrocketing costs.

The recent conflict in the Middle East, sparked by U.S. and Israeli military actions against Iran and resulting counterattacks, is raising fears of fuel shortages and their impact on industries that heavily depend on fuel.

Denita Wawn, CEO of Master Builders Australia, expressed the growing concerns over increasing expenses in the building and construction sector.

“We are receiving a flood of notifications from building suppliers informing us of increased transport costs due to fuel surcharge levies,” Wawn shared with SBS News.

“Our industry is deeply dependent on diesel, whether it’s for civil construction projects or the countless utility vehicles crisscrossing our cities and rural areas daily to reach various construction sites.”

She said while developers learned to be more conservative in their forecasts following COVID-19, long approval lead times of six to 24 months before a project start mean these additional costs could not have been factored in.

Wawn is urging the government to step in early and consider a fuel carve-out for the building and construction industry.

“It is critical that essential services like building and construction continue,” she said.

“And if that means that fuel rationing has to occur for the betterment of the country as a whole, so be it. Building and construction has to be included.”

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has not suggested fuel rationing or carve-outs for particular industries to date, instead urging calm.

On Thursday, Albanese reassured Australians that fuel deliveries have not yet been disrupted and established a fuel taskforce to coordinate state and Commonwealth distribution efforts around the country.

“Our fuel supply is currently secure. However, I want us to be overprepared,” he said.

Energy Minister Chris Bowen revealed that 519 million litres of petrol and diesel have been released from the country’s emergency reserves and directed to regional Australia.

He reiterated government calls for people not to panic-buy fuel, explaining it puts strain on the supply chain, which is already adapting to changing international circumstances.

“If demand is double, the supply chain will struggle,” Bowen told ABC RN on Friday morning.

Government’s new homes target at risk

Wawn stressed that transport and material cost increases and disruptions to the building supply chain will hinder efforts to meet the National Housing Accord target of 1.2 million homes before the end of the decade.

“Higher costs for builders will harm productivity and affordability at a time when we need a dramatic increase in housing supply,” Wawn said.

“Since the start of the Accord, a 75,000-home backlog has already accumulated. Unless the federal government pulls the correct policy levers, recent events are likely to worsen the home building situation even further.”

Earlier this week, the Urban Development Institute of Australia released its annual State of the Land report, examining residential development activity across Australia.

It forecasts a shortfall of 380,000 new dwellings by 2030, and a production drop of 11 per cent in 2026 alone, due to rising costs, labour shortages and volatility in the construction industry.

Opposition housing spokesperson Andrew Bragg says the industry has been “bogged down” by high labour and material costs for years.

“Construction costs and labour shortages were already biting before any conflict in the Middle East disrupted global supply chains,” he told SBS News.

“This has only been made worse by the current oil crisis.”

He pointed to 3,596 building industry insolvencies in 2025, according to the Australian Securities and Investments Commission, as demonstrating the “fragility” of the sector.

“Builders and developers are being forced to operate in a system that is increasingly costly and difficult,” he said.

Southern Charm Romance: Joe from Southern Hospitality Suggests New Flame Between Justin and Charley

Joe Bradley from Southern Hospitality has opened up about the buzz surrounding his fellow cast member, Justin Assad, and the possibility of a romance with Southern Charm‘s Charley Manley.

Speaking exclusively with Us Weekly on Thursday, March 19, Joe hinted at the validity of the circulating rumors. “I’ve caught wind of the whispers,” he admitted. “The truth will eventually come out. But as of now, I’m in the dark. So, who knows?”

This speculation began earlier in the month, suggesting that the Bravo newcomers—Justin, who joined Southern Hospitality in its fourth season, and Charley, who appeared in the eleventh season of Southern Charm—have been seeing each other secretly since the fall of 2025.

The popular fan page Charleston Bravoholic added fuel to the fire on March 13, stating that Charley, 28, and Justin, 29, have been a couple since September 2025, labeling them as “one hot Charleston duo.”

Us Weekly has sought a comment from Bravo regarding these rumors.

Charley and Justin’s rumored romance comes after she briefly dated Craig Conover on season 11 of Southern Charm. The pair went on an oyster date on the show, which was filmed in spring and summer 2025.

The gallery associate ended their short-lived relationship after Craig, 37, screamed at her friend Salley Carson during a group trip to Mexico.

Southern Charm Finale Craig Claims He Would Have Picked Charley Manley Over Ex Paige DeSorbo Before Mexico Fallout

Craig Conover finally revealed just how hard he fell for costar Charley Manley after his romance with ex-girlfriend Paige DeSorbo. “I think we were a lot closer than anyone knew. We’d FaceTime for hours every night. We would talk for hours a day, every day,” Craig, 37, told Salley Carson about his relationship with Charley, […]

Charley told Craig during the March 11 episode, “I’m saying before I was seriously interested in you. My switch flipped in Mexico. I only see us as friends now.”

Craig, for his part, claimed, “I had a big enough crush on you, I would’ve picked you over my ex. I didn’t think I would have felt that again.” (Craig most recently dated Paige DeSorbo for three years before they broke up in fall 2024.)

During the Southern Charm season 11 reunion, which aired on Wednesday, March 18, Craig claimed that Charley had been talking to other guys behind his back.

Charley denied his accusations, claiming, “I was not talking to anyone else as much as I was talking to him.”

Justin, meanwhile, has been vocal on season 4 of Southern Hospitality, which is currently airing, about how he’s enjoying the single life.

“I’m trying to squeeze the happiness out of life right now,” Justin said during a March episode of the Bravo series, noting it was “fun” to have one-night stands amid his search for something more permanent.

Joe exclusively told Us on Thursday that Justin is “a little messy” but ultimately “he’s a good guy.”

“He actually has a big heart. He’s [a] pretty sensitive dude as well,” Joe added. “So I think [when the] dust settles with, like, his playboy era, I think people will get to know him on a deeper level.”

Chilling Crime Scene: Man Wielded Meat Cleaver in Grisly Family Tragedy, Police Report

Background: Body camera footage shows the moments before a police officer shoots a stabbing suspect at a Mantua, Virginia, home (Fairfax County Police Department). Inset: Chhatra Thapa (Fairfax County Police Department).

Virginia police have unveiled body camera footage capturing an officer’s arrival at a family home, offering new insights into the tragic “bloodbath” that reportedly unfolded there.

The Fairfax County Police Department previously reported that on February 23, 54-year-old Chhatra Thapa fatally stabbed his wife, Binda Thapa, aged 52, and their daughter, Mamta Thapa, aged 33. Additionally, he allegedly assaulted his son-in-law during the incident.

The chilling events transpired on a snowy morning around 5 a.m. at the Margate Manor apartment complex, located on the 3900 block of Persimmon Drive in Mantua, Virginia. The son-in-law was outside, brushing snow off his vehicle, when he overheard a “commotion” inside the apartment where he lived with his wife, in-laws, and their 1-year-old child.

Upon hearing the disturbance, he called 911 and re-entered the apartment to check on the situation. Simultaneously, a nearby resident also contacted the authorities. She later recounted the terrifying moments to CBS affiliate WUSA in Washington, D.C.

“That poor woman was pounding on the door desperately, screaming for help. I thought about opening the door, but my husband advised against it, reminding me we have kids and didn’t know who was outside. So, I called 911 as quickly as I could,” shared Ariana Eddleman, referring to Mamta Thapa. “I think she had already collapsed because when I looked through the peephole, I couldn’t see anything, but she was still pounding.”

The son-in-law entered his home to find his wife with multiple stab wounds and his father-in-law with a 10-inch “curved dagger” that also resembled a “meat cleaver,” Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis said during a press conference last month. Chhatra Thapa was in the process of stabbing his wife after already having stabbed his daughter, police said, “and then the father-in-law turned the knife on his son-in-law.”

Fairfax County police officers were dispatched to the scene. On Thursday, the Fairfax County Police Department released the body camera footage of the officer who opened the door of the family’s home and came face-to-face with the suspect.

The video begins with him exiting his law enforcement vehicle and hustling toward the apartment building. Another officer’s SUV is already parked. Snow is all over the ground and surrounding cars.

An apparent woman’s screams can be heard as the officer gets closer. He then meets up with his fellow officer.

“Ma’am, are you able to come upstairs?” the officer asks.

To the right, across from the Thapas’ apartment, is the front door of another apartment — ostensibly that of the neighbors whom Mamta Thapa begged for help — covered in blood. A woman’s screams continue, and the officer focuses on the apartment to the left, where there is also apparent blood.

“I hear a kid screaming inside,” the officer says before banging on the door. “Fairfax County police, open the door!” he yells as the other cop holds his own weapon and flashlight.

The officer wearing the camera opens the door and raises his weapon as a man appears to yell something. Amid heavy breathing, the officer sees the suspect across a cluttered living room covered in apparent blood.

The suspect — appearing to be holding something and with blood on his hand — stares forward.

“Hey, put the knife down! Drop the knife! Do it now!” the officer screams. “Drop the knife!”

As the man raises the blade and strikes down, the officer shoots him five times, killing him. A baby’s cries can be heard, and the officer picks him up and takes him further away from the carnage.

While the area surrounding the baby is blurred in the video, the police chief said last month that as the officers entered the apartment, they saw Chhatra Thapa “literally in progress stabbing his son,” suggesting the son-in-law was between his baby and his father-in-law during the police confrontation.

The 1-year-old child was physically unharmed by the “bloodbath,” as Davis described it. Detectives took the boy into protective custody, and with the help of child protective services, found “an appropriate family placement.”

Mamta Thapa, the daughter, and Binda Thapa, the mother, were brought to a local hospital where they were pronounced dead. The son-in-law was brought to an area hospital “in life-threatening condition.” His present condition is unclear.

Trump’s Bold Rebuke: Accuses NATO of ‘Cowardice’ for Sidestepping War Involvement

0
Donald Trump has called America’s NATO allies “cowards” for not involving themselves in the war in Iran.

The president recently expressed his frustration through an intense message on his Truth Social platform.

“Without the USA, NATO IS A PAPER TIGER!” he exclaimed.

Donald Trump called his NATO allies "cowards" for not providing military support for his war with Iran.

He continued by criticizing NATO’s reluctance to confront a nuclear-capable Iran, stating, “They didn’t want to join the fight to stop a Nuclear Powered Iran. Now that fight is Militarily WON, with very little danger for them, they complain about the high oil prices they are forced to pay, but don’t want to help open the Strait of Hormuz, a simple military maneuver that is the single reason for the high oil prices.”

The president added, “So easy for them to do, with so little risk. COWARDS, and we will REMEMBER!”

NATO, also known as the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, consists of the United States, Canada, and the majority of European nations.

Trump’s outburst marks another turnaround for the president, who said on Wednesday that the US didn’t need the help of other countries.

“Because of the fact that we have had such Military Success, we no longer ‘need,’ or desire, the NATO Countries’ assistance,” he said on his social media site.

“WE NEVER DID! Likewise, Japan, Australia, or South Korea.”

And on Tuesday he said unnamed countries were “coming already” to support the US in the Middle East.

The US is now deploying more warships and another 2500 Marines in the region.

The president also brushed off the importance of the Strait of Hormuz.

“We don’t use the strait, the United States, we don’t need it,” Trump said.

“At a certain point, it’ll open itself.”

While the US sources most of its oil domestically, 20 per cent of the world’s oil is shipped through the strait.

That includes a substantial amount of oil used in Australia.

“The enemy has been defeated,” Khamenei said.

“(Iranians have) dealt him a dizzying blow so that he now starts uttering contradictory words and nonsense.”

Meanwhile, US Central Command has confirmed that 232 American service members have been injured since the war began three weeks ago.

Of those, ten are seriously wounded, and 207 have been able to return to duty.

Shocking Allegation: Joseph Duggar’s Wife Kendra Faces Charges of Child Endangerment

0

Kendra Duggar was taken into custody on Friday amid new allegations against her husband, Joseph Duggar, who is facing serious charges related to inappropriate conduct with a minor.

The 27-year-old Kendra was arrested in Arkansas on charges of allegedly putting a minor in danger and false imprisonment, according to a report by TMZ.

This arrest follows just two days after her 31-year-old husband was detained over claims that he inappropriately touched a nine-year-old girl.

Initially, when authorities arrived at the Duggar residence in Washington County with an arrest warrant for Kendra, she was not present.

Nevertheless, the Washington County Detention Center has confirmed that Kendra is now in custody.

Daily Mail has reached out to reps for Kendra and Joseph Duggar, but did not immediately hear back.

Kendra and Duggar married in 2017 and the pair are parents to four children.

Earlier this week on Wednesday, Duggar was arrested in connection with lewd and lascivious behavior involving unlawful sexual activity with a minor, a statement from the Bay County Sheriff’s Office in Lynn Haven, Florida announced.

An investigator with the Tontitown Police Department in Tontitown, Arkansas reached out to the BCSO ‘regarding a report of past sexual abuse.’

An alleged victim, identified as a 14-year-old girl, told law enforcement about a series of inappropriate incidents Duggar was involved in around five years back, police said.

Authorities said the alleged incidents occurred in 2020, when the alleged victim was nine-years-old and on vacation with her family in Panama City Beach, Florida.

Duggar and Kendra’s new charges in Arkansas are reportedly not related to his case in the state of Florida.

He is being held in Arkansas as he awaits extradition back to Florida.

Family members have since broken silence on his arrest, such as brother Josh – who is currently serving a 12-year prison sentence for possessing child pornography.

His attorney told the Daily Mail, ‘Josh understands the stigma of being accused.

‘He lives with the painful reality of how false accusations can destroy a life. He understands how the targeting of a person for publicity can twist the truth into sensationalized fiction.’

The attorney said that the brothers ‘are not in frequent communication’ but Josh ‘hopes and prays for his brother’s well being in this difficult time.’

His sister Jill has also spoken out by uploading a post to her family blog which she shares with husband Derick Dillard.

‘We were shocked yesterday evening to learn of Jill’s brother’s [Joseph Duggar’s] arrest,’ the message read.

‘We first learned of anything related to his charges yesterday via a text from a friend who messaged us about the recent media reports of Joseph’s arrest and his alleged confession to molesting a juvenile female in 2020. We are shocked and heartbroken.’

They added, ‘We strongly condemn abuse. We support the rule of law and hope that justice will be achieved. Our hearts go out to the innocent juvenile victim of this unspeakable crime and her family.

‘We pray God gives her strength, comfort and hope, and that she is able to get all the help and support she needs and deserves in the days ahead.’

Jill and Derick also sent love to Kendra and her four children while praying ‘that they feel loved and supported during this time as we cannot imagine the indescribable pain they feel as they process and grieve everything.’

The post was uploaded on Thursday, just one day before Kendra’s arrest for allegedly endangering the welfare of a minor and false imprisonment.

Duggar’s mugshot was released on Wednesday evening by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

The former reality star sported a thick beard, and he gazed forward with a stony expression, which notably contrasted the grinning 2021 mugshot of his brother Josh, which had also been snapped in Washington County.

The alleged victim told investigators that the family had been staying at a home located on Danny Drive at the time of the illegal incidents.

Joseph Duggar ‘repeatedly asked her to sit on his lap,’ BCSO officials said, adding that his behavior appeared to escalate as the vacation continued.

In another incident, Joseph ‘asked [the victim] to sit next to him on a couch and covered them with a blanket, ‘rubbing’ his hands on her thighs.

‘During this time, Duggar manipulated the victim’s underwear and grazed her genitals.’

Duggar subsequently told the alleged victim he was sorry, and the incidents ceased, according to officials with the BCSO.

The father of the alleged victim confronted Joseph Duggar about what happened on Tuesday, at which time he admitted to his actions to the father and a detective in Tontitown, the BCSO said.

Joseph Duggar was subsequently arrested and charged in connection with Lewd and Lascivious Behavior – Molestation of a Victim Less Than 12-years-old; and Lewd and Lascivious Behavior Conducted By A Person 18 Years or Older.

Duggar’s confession to the girl’s father and a detective was included in an affidavit filed by the Bay County Sheriff’s Office, which was obtained by People.

BCSO Criminal Investigator Chase Norris had then ‘requested the detective and victim’s father call the defendant.’

During the phone call, Duggar ‘admitted his actions’ and confessed that he ‘touched the victim over her clothing,’ per the affidavit.

At the time, the TV personality had ‘admitted his intentions were not pure.’

His cousin Amy Duggar also recently broke her silence to share she was ‘utterly shocked’ but ‘not surprised’ over his arrest.

She said in a statement to People on Friday: ‘In light of the recent allegations involving my cousin, Joseph Duggar, I am sickened, heartbroken and deeply angry.’

Amy added, ‘My first thoughts are with the victim, a child who deserved to be safe, protected and surrounded by people she could trust.

‘The courage it took for her to come forward, especially after years of carrying something so heavy, cannot be overstated. That bravery deserves to be honored above all else.’

And while she was ‘utterly shocked’ over the allegations, Amy expressed that she is ‘not surprised that another alleged predator has emerged from this toxic system.’

Amy told the outlet that she has ‘worked hard to break cycles in both my extended family and my immediate family.’

She sent prayers to the alleged victim while adding, ‘Recognizing that we do not yet know the full picture, I am also praying for Joseph’s wife, Kendra, as she begins to process this, and for the protection of their children.

‘I’m praying for eyes to be opened and above all, I pray that justice will be served to the fullest.’

Tragic Loss: Parents Seek Justice After 9-Year-Old’s Passing in Dangerous Online Challenge

0

A tragic incident in Texas has claimed the life of a young girl who accidentally strangled herself while attempting a dangerous social media challenge known as the “blackout challenge.” Her grieving family is now speaking out, hoping to raise awareness about the perilous trend that has gained traction online.

JackLynn Blackwell, a 9-year-old from Stephenville, Texas, lost her life on February 3 after choking herself in her family’s backyard, as reported by CBS News.

“She went outside to play, as she usually does,” recounted her father, Curtis Blackwell, in an interview with CBS News. “I noticed it was unusually quiet—quieter than it should have been.”

Curtis described the heart-wrenching moment he discovered his daughter. “I saw her near the carport and caught sight of her hair. I called out, ‘JackLynn!’ Initially, I thought she was bending over, playing as she often did in that spot. But tragically, she wasn’t playing.”

“Then I saw her kind of around the corner that goes to the carport, saw her hair. I said, ‘JackLynn!’ I thought she was bending over playing ’cause she was always in that area playing, but she wasn’t playing.”

The father quickly went to check on his daughter, who was found motionless with a cord wrapped around her neck.

“I tried to do everything I could to save her,” Curtis Blackwell told the outlet. “I got her off the cord. I tried to give her CPR until the first responders got there. It was the most terrifying, shocking thing I’ve ever seen.”

The incident unfolded after JackLynn showed her grandmother a video of the online challenge in which children and teens film themselves intentionally being choked to the point of blacking out or experiencing a euphoric “high,” according to CBS.

“It was horrible to see my daughter in such a vulnerable state because of something so senseless.”

In light of their daughter’s tragic death, JackLynn’s parents are slamming social media companies for allowing such dangerous videos to circulate on their platforms, CBS reported.

“It’s not a joke, it’s not a game, it’s life and death,” Curtis Blackwell said, according to the outlet.

“Most of the kids are like 9 years old to 14 years old. A lot of kids her age, their brains aren’t fully developed, and they are very easily influenced.”

Approximately 80 children have died from the online trend, according to the CDC, CBS reported.

Several social media companies are reportedly blocking videos related to the deadly challenge or issuing warnings to viewers who search for related keywords.

However, the warnings are too late for JackLynn’s grieving parents, who are looking to hold social media companies accountable for the videos posted to their platforms.

“You could check on your kid, it could be kid-friendly videos, and then three minutes later it could be totally something dark because of the algorithms they start creating,” Curtis Blackwell told CBS. “There’s too many of these kids lost for these companies not to be held accountable in my eyes.”

Joseph Duggar of ’19 Kids and Counting’ Fame and Wife Encounter New Legal Charges in Arkansas

0

Joseph Duggar, known for his role in the reality television series “19 Kids and Counting,” and his wife, Kendra, are currently embroiled in legal troubles, as they face charges brought against them in both Arkansas and Florida. The recent developments have put the couple under significant scrutiny.

In Arkansas, Joseph and Kendra Duggar are contending with eight new charges. These charges emerge as a continuation of legal issues that began with an accusation of molestation against Joseph Duggar, related to an incident that allegedly occurred in Florida six years ago.

The Tontitown Police Department has been at the forefront of this investigation, yet details remain scarce. The specifics of the charges have not been fully disclosed, leaving many questions unanswered about the nature of their connection to the earlier Florida allegations.

As the investigation unfolds, the public and media await further information to clarify the Duggar couple’s legal predicament and its potential impact on their lives and public image.

  • Four counts of second-degree false imprisonment
  • Four counts of second-degree endangering the welfare of a minor

The charges stem from a Tontitown Police Department investigation. No other information on that investigation has been shared, and it’s not clear if they are related to the charges he faces in Florida.

Joseph Duggar’s Florida Charges

On Wednesday, March 18, 2026, Duggar was arrested at his home in Tontitown at around 3:18 p.m.

Friday morning, he waived his right to be extradited to Bay County, Florida, where he will be prosecuted for allegedly touching a nine-year-old girl inappropriately while she was on a Florida family vacation in 2020.

If found guilty, he could spend decades behind bars.

The charges he faces in Florida are lewd and lascivious molestation of a victim less than 12, as well as lewd and lascivious behavior conducted by a person older than 18.

The charges may appear unfamiliar to some in Duggar’s home state of Arkansas, as the names and punishments for criminal charges vary by state.

“Lewd and lascivious behavior” is essentially offensive sexual conduct, often when someone is accused of touching themselves or others sexually, either in public or in the presence of other people.

Given that the victim was reportedly 9 years old, and Duggar would have been around 25 years old at the time, the alleged crime is classified as a “life felony” in the Florida state code. This means that a life sentence is possible.

In total, he now faces ten charges— the eight charges in Arkansas, and two in Florida.

The Tontitown Police Department said the investigation is active and ongoing. Due to the case’s involvement of minors and sensitive circumstances, Arkansas law strictly limits the information that can be released.

With no family gatherings or gifts for the children, her heart is heavy. “There’s nothing to celebrate,” she says, as the ongoing conflict in Lebanon and the soaring cost of living overshadow the festivities marking the end of Ramadan.

Across the Middle East, from the bustling streets of Beirut to the glittering skyline of Dubai, and from the cultural hubs of Manama to the historic lanes of Jerusalem, the conclusion of the holy month of fasting brings little solace. For millions of Muslims, the joy of Eid is marred by the unrelenting turmoil and instability in the region.

In her modest Beirut apartment, Ahmad, 49, shares a cramped space with her husband, three sons, and nine other relatives. The small home has become a refuge for 12 people, all trying to make do with limited resources.

“Perhaps the wealthy are celebrating, but for us, the essence of Eid has vanished. We have no money, and those who have been displaced have no place to return to,” Ahmad laments.

In Lebanon, the economic crisis has been a constant for years, exacerbated now by conflict. Prices in local markets have surged, leaving many struggling to afford basic necessities.

On the eve of Eid, Ahmad set up a small pastry stall in front of her home to supplement her husband’s salary as a car washer.

“We won’t eat a single one; everything is for sale,” she said.

Kneading dough and crushing pistachios, the whole family was busy in the building’s entryway.

“We won’t even go out to play. Everyone is scared, Israel is striking, so we stay home,” said Yasmine, 11, a big pink ribbon in her hair.

Disruptions to life across the Gulf

In the Gulf, fear of bombings has also dampened the mood.

Long seen as the region’s safe havens, these countries have been the target of Iran’s retaliatory strikes following US-Israeli attacks on Iran from 28 February.

Nearly 30 people have been killed in Gulf states since the war broke out.

In Kuwait, authorities have temporarily banned plays, concerts and weddings during Eid al-Fitr to limit large gatherings.

Ali Ibrahim, a 41-year-old Egyptian working in Kuwait, said fewer customers than usual have turned up at stores to buy new clothes ahead of Eid.

Qatar also suspended all public events until further notice from the start of the conflict.

In the United Arab Emirates, outdoor prayers are banned for Eid and must be held inside mosques for security reasons.

Juhi Yasmeen Khan, a 53-year-old social worker from India who has lived in Dubai for nearly three decades, said “it doesn’t feel right to have a grand celebration” this year.

“Given the current situation, many of us are opting for intimate celebrations at home,” she said, adding that she would celebrate with her mother, sister and son.

“Together, we will keep the Eid spirit alive.”

‘This will surely pass’

For Palestinians in occupied East Jerusalem, Ramadan is incomplete this year after Israel shut Al-Aqsa Mosque, among other holy sites, over the ongoing war.

“There is a pain in our hearts because we are deprived of Al-Aqsa Mosque,” said Ihab, a 30-year-old who declined to share his last name.

This year, the lights and lanterns featuring Islamic designs, such as crescent moons, are absent from the streets.

The narrow passages of the usually bustling Old City emptied at the start of the conflict.

In Bahrain, people have been living to the sound of sirens ringing several times a day to warn of potential missile and drone threats.

At a beauty salon in the capital Manama, five-year-old Sarah waited to have her hands painted with henna ahead of Eid celebrations.

Her mother Maryam Abdullah said the war will not stop her family “from buying our Eid necessities and preparing for the holiday as we always have”.

“This will surely pass, and it won’t prevent us from enjoying the Eid atmosphere, even if it’s limited to visiting family at home,” she said.

Hessa Ahmed, a Bahraini employee in her thirties, was also intent on celebrating.

“I went shopping with my friend. We bought clothes and accessories and will prepare to celebrate Eid with family, relatives, and friends.”

Teen Admits Guilt in Murder of Maryland Entrepreneur Discovered Bound and Burned in Vehicle

A Maryland teenager has admitted to the murder of a local business owner, with authorities stating that the teen assaulted the victim, kidnapped him, and set his truck on fire with him trapped inside.

Jonah Michael Poole, on March 18, entered a guilty plea to first-degree murder for the death of 67-year-old Edward Stephen Koza, as detailed in an arrest warrant issued by the Office of the State’s Attorney for Anne Arundel County.

Poole is set to be sentenced on June 26.

At 19 years old, Poole faces additional charges including second-degree murder, first and second-degree assault, conspiracy to commit murder, and arson, according to a statement from the Anne Arundel County Police Department. His girlfriend, Kylee Alyssa Dakes, who is also implicated, faces similar charges, including first-degree murder.

The court documents do not clarify whether Dakes has entered a plea. Her next court appearance is scheduled for April 28, and her trial is set to commence on June 8. Dakes’s legal representative did not immediately respond to Oxygen‘s request for a comment.

Back in May, Anne Arundel police and fire personnel responded to a 911 call about a truck in Koza’s Tropic Bay Water Gardens parking lot, which had burst into flames right before a red car fled the scene, per the warrant.

When the fire was extinguished, according to the press release, Koza’s remains were found inside the car.

Koza’s hands, arms and mouth had been bound with tape, stated the warrant, and he was not wearing shoes. An autopsy cited in the warrant stated that Koza had sustained blunt force trauma to the head.

Authorities found a “Bass Pro” baseball hat on the ground next to the truck. Meanwhile, inside the business, there were signs of a struggle, per the warrant, including broken items, a plastic bag with blood, a pair of shoes, blood on the ground and a rock that had been dislodged from a retail display.

Investigators wrote in the warrant that they believe Poole and Dakes attacked Koza inside his store, likely placed him in his truck, and drove to a gas station to purchase gasoline for an accelerant, before returning to Koza’s store to light his truck, with him inside it, on fire.

Surveillance video from that gas station, which was cited in the warrant, allegedly featured a couple arriving in a pickup truck driven by a man who appeared to be wearing a Bass Pro baseball hat. The footage allegedly showed his female companion exiting the car, handing money to an attendant, and walking out of the store.

Poole and Dakes’ motive is unclear, and a spokesperson from the Office of the State’s Attorney for Anne Arundel County declined to comment when asked by Oxygen
