Inside Tehran: Iranian Woman Shares Harrowing Experience Amidst Strikes, Checkpoints, and Human Shield Tactics

0

An Iranian woman, choosing to remain anonymous, has courageously shared insights on the current situation in Tehran, as President Donald Trump’s two-week ceasefire with Iran cautiously commenced on Tuesday.

In her essay featured in The Australian, she paints a vivid picture of the nightly explosions, numerous checkpoints, and communications outages that have become the norm in Iran since the United States and Israel began their operations in February.

“In essence, civilians have been transformed into human shields amidst an expansive militarized environment,” she explained, noting that “a widespread feeling of anger, paranoia, and fatigue has gripped the population.”

The Iranian regime’s blatant public executions of thousands of protesters in January prompted citizens to initially welcome the strikes from U.S. and Israeli forces when Operation Epic Fury was launched on February 28.

“They say they’ve hit the leader’s residence,” the author’s daughter was quoted saying. “All the children were screaming and cheering. … Even our teacher was quietly snapping their fingers and dancing.”

The author described everyday Iranians celebrating the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei that same Saturday, and the streets of Tehran filling with cheers of “death to the dictator.”

“Perhaps for the first time,” the anonymous author recalled, “we allowed ourselves to believe our long-held dream was beginning to take shape.”

But soon enough, the reality of day-to-day life under a threatened, crumbling regime and ongoing attacks took a toll. One of the harshest realities those on the ground in Iran face is the internet blackout, effectively ending communications with the outside world and leading to great uncertainty at the hands of the regime.

“So far, none of those close to us have suffered physical harm, but no night is calm,” the Iranian woman wrote. “What weighs most heavily is not only the war itself, but the possibility that it may end leaving behind a regime even more authoritarian, more repressive and more violent.”

According to the author, a stubborn faction of regime supporters remain, blasting propaganda on loudspeakers nightly through the streets of Tehran and reinforcing its authority to those who support the revolution.

“The streets are now covered with checkpoints,” she wrote. “Under bridges and along main roads, movement is restricted. Long traffic lines form. Young people are stopped, their phones inspected under the pretext of routine checks.”

After the announcement of the ceasefire between U.S. forces and the Iranian regime Tuesday, the author said, most of her country went to sleep that night in a “state of deep anxiety.”

“What weighs most heavily is not only the war itself, but the possibility that it may end up leaving behind a regime even more authoritarian, more repressive, and more violent,” the author notes.

She urged a ceasefire that is not “abandonment,” but peace, destabilizing the Iranian regime.

“A ceasefire that stabilizes the current order, without addressing the demands that have brought Iranians into the streets for years, risks being experienced not as peace, but as abandonment,” the author wrote.

Negotiations between Iran and the U.S. are scheduled to begin Friday in Pakistan.

“We wait, and we continue, in whatever ways possible, to insist that light will eventually overcome this darkness,” she concluded.

The Australian notes the author remains anonymous for “fear of retribution.”

Jacksonville Sheriff Takes Action: Off-Duty Arrest at Local Hardware Store Highlights Commitment to Public Safety

0

Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters took swift action at a neighborhood hardware store following reports of a shoplifting incident, as confirmed by the sheriff’s office.

In JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Sheriff T.K. Waters personally apprehended a suspect on Wednesday afternoon after a shoplifting alert at a local home improvement store.

According to a social media video posted by Sheriff Waters, he was at the Home Depot on Atlantic Boulevard near Girvin Road to pick up a table when the situation escalated.

While engaged in conversation with Clem Nieto, a retired Robbery Detective from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, they were interrupted by a store employee reporting an ongoing theft.

“A staff member approached me and asked, ‘Sir, can you help us with a theft in progress?’ I responded, ‘Of course.’ I then quickly headed to the parking lot and there he was,” Sheriff Waters recounted to First Coast News on Thursday.

The sheriff said the suspect, who’s now been identified as 40-year-old Raymond Pena Jr., was trying to leave the store with about $500 worth of merchandise he hadn’t paid for.

“He’s saying ‘I didn’t do anything’ and he’s walking away,” said Waters.

When they reached out to grab the suspect, he pulled away and started running. Waters and Nieto followed.

“We ran, and he went to the grass at the edge of the parking lot,” he said.

Nieto tripped and fell and Waters continued in the pursuit, according to the sheriff.

The foot chase continued through the parking lot into a grassy area where Waters was able to get him to the ground and get leverage while the suspect struggled to get away.

“I could get him down to the ground without really hurting him, so I shoved him in the back,” Sheriff Waters said. “I got on top of him to try to gain control, get him handcuffed. He fought, flaying and trying to get up, saying ‘I didn’t do anything.’”

Waters was able to get the suspect into handcuffs and proceeded to take him into custody.

“I mean, you cant come and steal and me be there and not expect me to come catch you,” he said.

Pena has been charged with theft and resisting. He also had two active warrants for theft.

Sheriff Waters told First Coast News even after years on the job, instincts like these never go away.

“I’ve been doing this for a very long time and you just don’t work it out of your system,” he said, “It doesn’t go away, so when someone asks for help the instinct is to go do it, and that’s what it was.”

Vigilantes Take Matters Into Their Own Hands, Damage Stolen Ute with Baseball Bats

Vigilantes in Queensland‘s southeast have taken the law into their own hands, bashing their own ute with baseball bats after it was stolen.
As the thief tried to get away, he inadvertently reversed through the front fence of a family home in Logan.

A utility vehicle was stolen from a worksite in Yeronga, prompting its owners to take matters into their own hands by attempting to locate it themselves.

After a determined search lasting three hours, they finally spotted the suspected thief driving the vehicle on a street in Rochedale South around 9:30 p.m.

Surveillance footage captures the dramatic scene as the owners rammed their own ute before aggressively striking it with baseball bats in an effort to reclaim their property from the thief.

“That’s my car! He stole our car!” one of the men shouted, as he furiously attacked the vehicle’s doors, mirrors, and windows.

The attack on their own ute lasted three minutes, before the driver fled.

The intense confrontation lasted roughly three minutes. During this time, the thief managed to escape but not without causing additional damage by reversing through the front fence of Danielle and Craig Mason’s residence.

“A number of hours earlier, my son could have been reversed over playing in the front yard,” Chris said.

“What’s the world come to?”

The driver still hasn’t been found despite a large police search, but the Mason family are more upset with the vigilantes than the thief himself.

“I was mostly angry about the vigilantes’ chase, because I think that that’s what created heaps more chaos and violence and damage than the guy stealing the car,” Danielle said.

“Which is obviously wrong, but I just don’t think we should take it into our own hands. Just leave it to the police.”

South Carolina Officials Alert Public to Lethal Risks of New Drug Even in Tiny Doses

SOUTH CAROLINA – Authorities in South Carolina have raised the alarm over a new and dangerous synthetic opioid, cychlorphine, that has recently been detected within the state.

Attorney General Alan Wilson highlighted on Wednesday the troubling trend of synthetic opioids, like cychlorphine, being manufactured abroad, often in places like China, before being smuggled into the United States by drug cartels.

“This substance is nothing short of poison,” Wilson stated emphatically. “We’re witnessing a concerted effort by foreign adversaries and drug cartels to inundate our communities with these lethal drugs. Their only objective is profit, regardless of the lives lost in the process. It’s crucial for parents to grasp the severity of this issue and discuss it with their children immediately. One misstep, one exposure, could be deadly. We are committed to utilizing every available resource to combat this threat and safeguard families across South Carolina.”

Wilson further explained that these synthetic drugs are engineered to be exceptionally potent, highly addictive, and challenging to detect. Often, they are clandestinely mixed with other substances, putting users at risk of an unexpected and potentially fatal outcome.

South Carolina officials have expressed grave concerns about the public safety threat posed by cychlorphine. Even minimal exposure can lead to overdose or death, and its constantly changing chemical structure complicates detection by conventional methods.

The Attorney General’s Office asked all residents to:

  • Avoid any unknown or illicit substances
  • Parents: talk to your children about the dangers of synthetic drugs and the reality that a single exposure could be fatal
  • Report suspicious activity to local law enforcement
  • Seek help immediately if you or someone you know is struggling with substance abuse

The Attorney General’s Office said they it will continue working with state, local, and federal partners to combat the flow of these drugs, hold traffickers accountable, and keep this poison out of communities.

Jesse Wood and MIC Star Welcome New Addition: Fearne Cotton’s Ex to Become a Father Again

Jesse Wood is set to welcome a new addition to his family as he and his girlfriend, Gemma Gregory, are expecting a baby. This exciting news comes just 16 months after Jesse’s separation from broadcaster Fearne Cotton.

The 49-year-old musician and the 40-year-old Made In Chelsea alum shared their joyous announcement with fans via an Instagram post on Thursday.

Gemma showed off her blossoming baby bump in a crop top in a shot captioned ‘incoming’, before sharing another sweet snap with Jesse captioned ‘made by these muppets’.

Gemma already has an 11-year-old son from a previous relationship, while Jesse is a father to two children with Fearne, as well as two with his first wife, Tilly Wood.

This baby announcement might catch some fans off guard, particularly as Jesse recently opened up about facing financial difficulties following his divorce from Fearne.

Jesse, who is the son of legendary Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood, recently shed light on his challenges when he appeared in court for a speeding charge in January.

The father-of-four candidly revealed how he was living on barely £1,000 a month and struggling for work since the breakdown of his 10-year marriage to broadcaster Fearne.

He told magistrates after admitting speeding on the A4 in West London: ‘I was due to be employed in 2024 but it got delayed.

‘At the moment I’m living off my savings and I am looking to get employment.’

Company accounts also show that his business is deeply in the red and burdened with mounting debts.

Rekognition Sound Limited – of which Jesse is the sole director and shareholder – has just £10,943 in its bank accounts while owing £111,903 to creditors. Of that sum, £37,352 relates to bank loans.

Most recent accounts, covering the 12 months to the end of November 2024, show the company is £101,562 in the red – a sharp increase from £56,211 the previous year.

Despite his famous rock-and-roll lineage, Jesse also appears to have no property safety net to fall back on.

His former marital home in Richmond, south-west London, is registered solely in Fearne’s name, meaning he has no legal claim to the £3.15million house she purchased in 2014.

The former couple share two children, son Rex, 12, and daughter Honey, nine.

Born into rock royalty, Jesse followed in his father’s footsteps by pursuing a career in music, carving out a living as a guitarist and working with various bands and projects over the years.

He has been a sometime guitarist for rock band Reef, as well as working behind the scenes on music-related ventures.

But whereas his father is worth £100million and lives in a £3million townhouse in Richmond, Jesse’s own business interests have faltered.

In October 2025 he stood down as a director of Reef Band LLP, which channels cash from royalties and live performances. The last accounts for the partnership showed it was £710 in the red.

He had also previously resigned as a director of Tribe Festivals in 2022.

Jesse’s financial plight emerged publicly as he faced a possible driving ban, having already accumulated nine penalty points for previous speeding offences.

In court, he disclosed that his most recent tax return showed a ‘very low’ annual income of around £14,000.

Jesse was handed a six-month driving ban and ordered to pay £255 in fines after his vehicle was clocked driving at 27mph in a 20mph zone.

The revelations about California-born Jesse’s finances came amid a new chapter in his personal life as he moved on from radio DJ Fearne.

Fearne was his second wife, following a previous marriage to Katherine ‘Tilly’ Boone, 52, with whom he also has two adult children.

As Jesse shared his baby news, Fearne also shared a personal update, albeit less dramatic, as she showed off her new lighter blonde locks.

He went public with reality star Gemma last April, when she posted a sun-soaked photo of Jesse, captioned: ‘Bloody love this one.’

Insiders said at the time that their relationship progressed quickly following the shock collapse of Jesse’s decade-long marriage in December 2024, followed by Fearne’s new relationship with Elliot Hegarty, a television director ten years her senior.

Ronnie Wood’s ex-wife Jo Wood, who helped raise Jesse, said of the split from Fearne last year: ‘I was shocked actually. I didn’t expect Fearne to have a new boyfriend. And Jesse was devastated.

‘But sometimes in life, you have to go through these things. It may be daunting at first, but every cloud has a silver lining. Nothing lasts forever. I hope Fearne will be very happy.

‘I’m sure Jesse’s going to be very happy. These things work out. Their time was up – they had to move on.’

Gemma is the London-born daughter of actor Paul Gregory, whose past boyfriends include Henry Brett, a captain of the England polo team.

Jesse, who previously dated the likes of Kate Moss, Kate Hudson and model Jasmine Guinness, has not spoken publicly in detail about his split from Fearne.

She, however, addressed it during an appearance on Lorraine last March, saying: ‘It’s all very amicable and the kids are doing great. I am in a very good place.’

Keaton Wagler’s Jersey to Be Celebrated with Special Honor at State Farm Center

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) – Keaton Wagler, a standout guard for the University of Illinois, has etched his name into the history books of Illini basketball.

Wagler has made history by becoming the first freshman in the program’s history to be recognized as a Consensus All-American. He achieved this remarkable feat by being named a second-team All-American by all four major national publications that announce postseason awards.

This significant accomplishment has set the stage for the Shawnee, Kansas native to achieve the honor of having his jersey commemorated at the State Farm Center.

On Thursday, Illinois Athletics confirmed that Wagler will be inducted into the Illinois Basketball Honored Jerseys program at the State Farm Center, solidifying his place among the program’s elite.

Wagler will join the ranks of other notable players from the Brad Underwood era, including Kofi Cockburn, Ayo Dosunmu, and Terrence Shannon Jr., who have also had their jerseys raised to the rafters at the State Farm Center.

Wagler averaged 17.9 points per game in his first year of college hoops, a monumental rise after not being ranked in the top 100 in his class by major recruiting sites out of high school. He is the first Consensus All-American at Illinois since Kofi Cockburn in 2022.

Wagler, a projected NBA lottery pick by several national outlets, has not yet announced his future plans.

Trump’s Matchmaker Set to Testify Under Oath: Revealing the Truth Behind Their Introduction

0

In a declaration on Thursday, Ambassador Paolo Zampolli expressed his willingness to testify before Congress, claiming he was the one who introduced President Donald Trump to First Lady Melania Trump.

During a phone interview with the Daily Mail, Zampolli shared this revelation following a surprising statement from the First Lady at the White House regarding serial predator Jeffrey Epstein—news that reportedly caught even President Trump off guard.

Amid her comments, the First Lady dismissed speculation that Epstein played a role in introducing her to Trump.

“I’m prepared to testify before Congress and confirm who brought the First Lady and the President together,” Zampolli emphatically told the Daily Mail. “I can even bring 50 witnesses who were present that night. Everyone knows this; it’s old news.”

The narrative suggests that the couple first crossed paths at a New York Fashion Week event in September 1998, hosted by Zampolli at the Kit Kat Club, during his tenure as a modeling agent.

Asked about what prompted the First Lady’s shock statement, Zampolli said he believed Melania earnestly feels for Epstein’s many victims.

‘I’m sure she cares about the victims and everybody that has been a victim has a right to expose this animal,’ Zampolli told the Daily Mail. ‘I think the First Lady has the biggest heart in the world, she’s a family woman, and she’s our marvelous First Lady,’ he added.

Marc Beckman, senior adviser to the First Lady, told the Daily Mail that Melania spoke out because ‘enough is enough’ and ‘the lies must stop.’

The timing raised eyebrows. Iran war coverage has largely drowned out the Epstein story, save for an ongoing battle on Capitol Hill over whether former Attorney General Pam Bondi must still sit for an Epstein-related deposition.

Even President Trump professed ignorance, telling MSNOW he didn’t ‘know anything about’ Melania’s plans to address Epstein.

The First Lady’s office had sent a press release to the media on Wednesday announcing she planned to make remarks – but gave no hint of the subject.

In a brief statement, during which she ignored reporters’ shouted questions, Melania made clear she was neither ‘friends’ with Epstein nor a ‘victim’ of the pedophile.

‘I honestly think, deep in her heart, she cares about the victims,’ Zampolli said. ‘I know she’s not a victim. We know that.’

‘They met randomly, they met socially – everybody knew Epstein,’ he added. ‘I’m in the files, you know?’

The New York Times confirmed that Zampolli’s name appeared in the Epstein files, in a story alleging the ambassador – who serves as Trump’s Special Envoy for Global Partnership – had outed his ex-girlfriend for being in the country illegally.

‘At no time did I request any favors from my colleagues,’ he told the Daily Mail, denying he had used his close ties to the President to have his ex, Brazilian model Amanda Ungaro, deported.

‘My inquiries were solely aimed at understanding the situation, and any advice I sought was strictly in relation to my son’s safety,’ he added in an interview last month.

The Times also reported that both Zampolli and Ungaro knew Epstein, and that Epstein and Zampolli had discussed buying a modelling agency together – though in a 2011 email to an Emirati businessman, Epstein sounded a sharply different note: ‘Be careful, [Zampolli] is trouble. Lots. He sells stories to the press.’

In a phone call on Thursday, Zampolli dismissed any suggestion that his fraught relationship with Ungaro had prompted the First Lady’s statement.

‘There’s no way. This is the First Lady of the United States. Do you think she cares about my ex?’ he said.

Since her deportation, Ungaro has spoken out in Brazilian media about flying in 2002, aged 17, on Epstein’s private jet, the Lolita Express – and how uncomfortable the experience was.

‘All I wanted was to get off that plane. I knew something was wrong – I just didn’t know what,’ she told O Globo. ‘At the time, it never crossed my mind that it could involve abuse.’

Ungaro has not suggested Epstein shared a close relationship with the Trumps.

US and Iran Gear Up for Ceasefire Talks Amid Netanyahu’s Green Light for Lebanon Negotiations

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — As tensions simmer between Israel and Hezbollah, representatives from the U.S. and Iran prepared on Friday for crucial negotiations set to commence in Islamabad. The talks aim to stabilize a fragile ceasefire and address Iran’s influence over the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

U.S. Vice President JD Vance was ready to depart from Washington, while Iran maintained silence regarding its negotiating team. Iran appeared to leverage this uncertainty to press the U.S. to stop Israeli military actions in Lebanon. The semiofficial Tasnim news agency, with connections to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, suggested that discussions would be “on hold” unless Washington complied.

In another development, Kuwait reported a drone incursion on Thursday night, attributing it to Iran and allied militias in the region. Although Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard denied involvement, the group has previously orchestrated unclaimed attacks across the Middle East.

Parallel to the Iran-U.S. talks, discussions between Israel and Lebanon are also anticipated to launch next week at the U.S. State Department in Washington. This could represent a significant step forward in efforts to maintain peace in the Middle East, as noted by a U.S. official and another informed source who requested anonymity due to the matter’s sensitivity.

These developments follow Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s announcement on Thursday that he has sanctioned direct negotiations with Lebanon. The aim is to disarm Hezbollah militants backed by Iran and foster diplomatic relations between the two nations.

Israel and Lebanon have technically been at war since Israel was established in 1948, and Netanyahu later stressed that there was no ceasefire between them. Israel’s announcement of negotiations with Lebanon comes amid disagreement over whether the ceasefire deal included a pause in fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, and a day after Israel pounded Beirut with airstrikes, the deadliest day in Lebanon since the war began Feb. 28.

The talks in Washington are expected to be handled on the American side by the U.S. ambassador to Lebanon, Michel Issa, and on the Israeli side by the Israeli ambassador to the U.S., Yechiel Leiter, according to the person familiar with the planning.

The Lebanese government had not responded as of Friday morning, and it was not immediately clear who would represent Lebanon. The timing and location of the talks was first reported by Axios.

Pressure on ceasefire continues

After declaring victory with the ceasefire announcement, both Iran and the U.S. have appeared to apply pressure on each other. Semiofficial news agencies in Iran suggested forces have mined the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial waterway for oil that Tehran has closed. Trump warned that U.S. forces would hit Iran harder than before if it did not fulfill the agreement.

Late Thursday, U.S. President Donald Trump appeared to cast doubt on the effectiveness of the ceasefire, writing on his social media platform: “Iran is doing a very poor job, dishonorable some would say, of allowing Oil to go through the Strait of Hormuz.”

“That is not the agreement we have!” Trump wrote of the trickle of ships Iran has allowed to pass through the crucial waterway.

Underlining Iran’s continued control of the strait, a Botswana-flagged liquefied natural gas tanker attempted to travel out of the Persian Gulf via a route ordered by the Revolutionary Guard, but suddenly turned around and headed back early Friday, ship-tracking data showed.

Saudi Arabia said recent attacks have damaged a key pipeline in the kingdom. Saudi Arabia’s state-run Saudi Press Agency, quoting an anonymous official, said its crucial East-West pipeline, which carries oil out to the Red Sea and avoids the Strait of Hormuz, was damaged in the recent attacks.

Questions also remained over what will happen to Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium at the heart of tensions, how and when normal traffic will resume through the strait, and what happens to Iran’s ability to launch future missile attacks and support armed proxies in the region.

Israel vows to continue striking Hezbollah in Lebanon

Iran’s parliament speaker, Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, warned in a social media post Thursday that continued Israeli attacks on Hezbollah in Lebanon would bring “explicit costs and STRONG responses.”

Qalibaf has been discussed as a possible negotiator who could meet Vance in Islamabad. The White House has said Vance would lead the delegation for talks starting Saturday.

Trump said Thursday that he has asked Netanyahu to dial back the strikes in Lebanon.

Lebanon’s health ministry said more than 300 people were killed and more than 1,100 wounded Wednesday by Israeli strikes on central Beirut and other areas of Lebanon that Israel said targeted Hezbollah, which joined the war in support of Tehran.

Early Friday morning, Israel’s military said it struck approximately 10 launchers in Lebanon that had fired rockets toward northern Israel on Thursday.

Threat of mines looms over the strait

Four tankers and three bulk carriers crossed through the strait Thursday, bringing the total number of ships passing through since the ceasefire to at least 12, according to the data firm Kpler.

Semiofficial news agencies in Iran published a chart Thursday suggesting the country’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard put sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz during the war — a message that may be intended to pressure the U.S.

The chart, released by the ISNA news agency and Tasnim, showed a large circle marked “danger zone” in Farsi over the route ships take through the strait, through which 20% of all traded oil and natural gas once passed.

The head of the United Arab Emirates’ major oil company, Sultan al-Jaber, said some 230 ships loaded with oil were waiting to get through the strait and must be allowed “to navigate this corridor without condition.”

The strait’s de facto closure has caused oil prices to skyrocket — affecting the cost of gasoline, food and other basics far beyond the Middle East. The spot price of Brent crude, the international standard, was around $96 Friday, up about 35% since the war began.

Israel and Lebanon Set to Commence Peace Talks Amid Rising Casualties: Over 300 Lives Lost

0

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Thursday that he has instructed his cabinet to engage in direct discussions with Lebanon, aiming to disarm Hezbollah and forge “peace relations” between the two nations.

“Following Lebanon’s repeated appeals to initiate direct negotiations with Israel, I directed the cabinet yesterday to commence these discussions with Lebanon at the earliest opportunity,” stated Netanyahu’s office in a formal announcement.

The statement further emphasized that the negotiations would concentrate on the disarmament of Hezbollah and the establishment of peaceful relations between Israel and Lebanon. Additionally, Israel welcomed the Lebanese Prime Minister’s recent call to demilitarize Beirut.

According to a Lebanese government official, who shared insights with Agence France-Presse (AFP) on Thursday, Lebanon would only consider entering negotiations if a ceasefire is declared first.

Reports from Israeli media indicated that Yechiel Leiter, Israel’s ambassador to the United States, is set to lead the Israeli delegation in the discussions. These talks are expected to proceed “under fire,” implying that Israel will continue its military actions in Lebanon during the negotiations.

The statement came a day after Israel launched its largest wave of strikes on Lebanon since the start of its war with Hezbollah on 2 March, leaving more than 300 people dead according to authorities.

Netanyahu’s statement also followed calls on Wednesday with US President Donald Trump and White House envoy Steve Witkoff, according to US publication Axios.

Senior US officials said Witkoff asked Netanyahu to “calm down” the strikes in Lebanon and open negotiations.

The publication quoted a senior Israeli official who said the direct negotiations will begin next week in Washington.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun had renewed a call last month for a truce and the opening of negotiations to stop the war between Israel and Hezbollah.

Lebanon’s cabinet on Thursday instructed security forces to restrict weapons in Beirut exclusively to state institutions, in a warning to Hezbollah.

“The army and security forces are requested to immediately begin reinforcing the full imposition of state authority over Beirut Governorate and to monopolise weapons in the hands of legitimate authorities alone,” Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said at the end of a cabinet meeting.

The Lebanese government banned Hezbollah’s military activities at the beginning of March, shortly after the start of war with Israel, but the decision has not stopped the Iran-backed group from conducting military operations.

Beirut had also committed last year to disarming the group, the only one to keep its weapons after Lebanon’s 1975-1990 civil war.

In December, Lebanese and Israeli civilian representatives held their first direct talks in decades, part of a ceasefire monitoring mechanism.

Before then, Israel and Lebanon, which have no formal diplomatic relations, had insisted on keeping military officers in the role.

Strikes continue on ‘Hezbollah launch sites’

The Israeli army said on Thursday it was striking Hezbollah positions in Lebanon, shortly after it had warned that the militant group could expand launches of projectiles across Israel.

“A short while ago, the [Israel Defense Forces] began striking Hezbollah launch sites in Lebanon,” the military said in a statement.

Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reported several Israeli strikes across southern Lebanon including Bint Jbeil, a symbolic town where Hezbollah said earlier it was engaging with Israeli soldiers.

An AFP correspondent saw first responders looking for survivors at the site of an Israeli airstrike that targeted the southern Lebanese village of Choukine.

In Israel, over 20 rocket alerts sounded through Thursday morning in communities near the northern border with Lebanon.

AFP footage from the border area showed long rocket trails in the sky and plumes of smoke signalling interceptions.

China’s Automobile Exports Skyrocket Amid Anticipated Shift to Electric Vehicles Due to Iran Conflict Energy Disruptions

HONG KONG – In a significant boost for Chinese automakers, passenger car exports from China surged in March, as reported by an industry association on Friday. This increase highlights the intensified efforts by Chinese car manufacturers to expand their presence in international markets.

According to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, there was a remarkable 82.4% increase in passenger car exports compared to the previous year, with around 748,000 vehicles shipped in March. This is a notable rise from the 586,000 vehicles exported in February.

Exports of new energy passenger vehicles, which include battery electric and plug-in hybrid cars, experienced an even more dramatic surge. These exports jumped over 140% year-on-year in March to reach 363,000 units, marking a 31% increase from February’s figure of approximately 276,000 units.

Leading Chinese automobile companies like BYD and Geely Auto are actively expanding their sales overseas, partly by setting up production facilities outside China. This move is fueled by the expectation that the global energy crisis and rising fuel costs, exacerbated by the conflict involving Iran, might drive more consumers towards electric vehicles.

Chinese car brands have made significant advancements in recent months, especially in markets such as Europe, Latin America, and Southeast Asia, as they seek to capture a larger share of the global automotive market.

“The impact of the Iran conflict hasn’t fully shown up in March data yet, but it can act as a trigger,” said Chris Liu, a Shanghai-based senior analyst at advisory group Omdia.

“In many markets that are structurally well suited for EVs, adoption has been slow simply because consumers lacked urgency,” he said. “A sharp rise in fuel prices changes that.”

The Chinese carmakers’ strong overseas push also came at a time when domestic vehicle sales in China have come under pressure from scaled-back government support this year to encourage drivers to switch to new energy vehicles.

Fierce competition in China among car brands and a prolonged property sector slump that has weighed on consumers’ desire for big purchases also impacted Chinese automakers.

Domestic passenger car sales fell 19.2% last month from a year earlier to nearly 1.7 million units. It was the fifth consecutive month of year-on-year declines for passenger car sales at home, based on data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.

UBS auto analyst Paul Gong believes that the domestic sales weakness will not be too long lasting and that the surge in overseas sales among Chinese carmakers could help with the weaker demand at home.

“For the overall industry, the overseas market’s sales volume growth is more than enough to offset domestic decline on a full-year basis,” said Gong, head of China autos research at UBS investment bank.

Overseas passenger car sales by units for Chinese automakers might grow by 20% or more this year compared with last year, he predicted.
