Discover the New Hotspots for Glamorous Living and Tax-Free Perks Beyond Dubai

0

Over the past ten years, Dubai, along with its Middle Eastern counterparts such as Abu Dhabi and Doha, has offered British expatriates the opportunity to indulge in a lavish lifestyle at a fraction of the cost compared to their home country.

These tax-free Gulf havens, characterized by their opulent displays of wealth—from luxury cars and designer wardrobes to upscale penthouses and five-star accommodations—have enabled countless Brits, ranging from real estate agents and educators to city professionals and business owners, to significantly elevate their living standards.

However, recent developments have seen the perception of these Middle Eastern locales, once viewed as untouchable by regional unrest, being challenged by the ongoing conflict involving Israel, the US, and Iran.

As the situation escalates into its fourth week, traditionally stable destinations like the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Oman have virtually vanished from the travel itineraries of tourists for the near future.

Stick or twist? Kate and Rio Ferdinand, who upped sticks and moved to Dubai last year, are amongst thousands in the UAE expat community who might be considering moving elsewhere if the conflict in the Gulf continues to rage

Stick or twist? Kate and Rio Ferdinand, who upped sticks and moved to Dubai last year, are amongst thousands in the UAE expat community who might be considering moving elsewhere if the conflict in the Gulf continues to rage

Meanwhile, concerned expatriates, including prominent British figures like Rio and Kate Ferdinand, Luisa Zissman, and reality TV personality Sam Gowland, are quickly considering their options should the turmoil continue.

So, where will the Brits who can’t face the reality of high prices and grey skies at home point their compass next?

These are the expat destinations around the world that do a good impression of Dubai – and where ambitious nouveau riche Brits will fit right in…

MONTENEGRO

Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic spends pre-season at the uber luxurious Portonovi complex, which has become a hit with expats seeking the high life

Vistas don’t come much prettier than Boka Bay on Montenegro’s sultry riviera, a glamorous collision of fjord-like scenery and rising mountains.

Thanks to its yacht lifestyle, increasingly sleek architecture – funded by big-spending Russians – and appetite for all things bougie, this polished portion of the Balkan country is fast becoming a hotspot for those who speculate to accumulate.

It has some stellar fans too; tennis star Novak Djokovic owns several villas in the eastern European country, one of which Queen Camilla is reported to have stayed in.

The sporting icon is regularly seen training at the uber-luxurious Portonovi complex, which has become a bougie enclave for expats, with its private villas and ‘world-class’ marina.

One&Only, one of the world’s most exclusive hotel brands, also has a property here – with rooms coming in at at around £1,200 a night.

MACAU

The Cotai Strip in Macau, China; this former Portuguese territory is the only place in China to offer legal gambling – and is fast becoming popular with expats seeking a glitzy haven

Dubbed the Las Vegas of Asia, Macau has something that the Middle East definitely doesn’t – the chance to bet the night away.

The former Portuguese colony, which was returned to China in 1999, is the only place in China where casino gambling is legal, and so hedonism has thrived in this tiny region on the country’s south coast, which looks across the Pearl River Delta at Hong Kong.

What can expats expect if they live here? Plenty of Dubai-style razzle dazzle; the architecture is bold, following the ‘more is more’ mantra.

Last month, The Grand Emperor Hotel revealed the ‘golden pathway’ it had laid in 2006 – paved using genuine gold bars – had been sold for $13million (£9.8million) to cash in on the soaring prices of the precious metal.

That it was there in the first place tells you all you need to know about Macau.

GOLD COAST CITY

Gold Coast City in Queensland, Australia, has everything Dubai lovers could want – an impressive amount of slick high rises, beautiful beaches and cheap property prices

Culture-light but with an impressive skyline and safe suburbs where a five-bed with a pool costs much less than the equivalent in the UK, Australia’s Gold Coast City is an increasingly attractive option for ex-Dubai dwellers who still want blue skies, work-life balance and affordable luxury.

The walk from the office to the ocean can take minutes – and there’s no need to learn a new language, sport…

MIAMI

And souped-up super cars are just as common a sight on Ocean Drive as they are in Dubai

Make like the Beckhams and head for Florida’s most glam metropolis – where aesthetic enhancements are routine, consumerism is a favourite sport and taxes are more favourable. This is Dubai with an American accent.

The world’s most upscale hotel brands are all here and, thanks to its tropical climate, Miami’s skies are almost always blue – the retractable roof on your Porsche will be more down than up.

The city’s economy is buoyant too, so a slice of la dolce vita is easier to attain – with trade, finance and tourism all booming.

SHANGHAI

City slickers in need of a new metropolis might find the bright lights of Shanghai mirrors the glamour of the Middle East

City slickers in need of a new metropolis might find the bright lights of Shanghai mirrors the glamour of the Middle East

Where does your twentysomething British City boy who’s not ready to come home yet head to next?

Party-loving Shanghai, where boozy weeknights out with colleagues in glamorous nightspots and big money deals are all in the offing. It’s China’s New York, essentially.

Like its Middle Eastern counterparts, there are spotless streets and gleaming skyscrapers, with many an expat working out of the Bund, Shanghai’s glistening waterfront, which is home to British-built hotels, banks and the Custom House.

PANAMA CITY

Central America's Panama City has all the urbanity of the Middle East's biggest cities ¿ and the potential for a low-cost lifestyle

Central America’s Panama City has all the urbanity of the Middle East’s biggest cities – and the potential for a low-cost lifestyle

Arguably Central America’s most cosmopolitan city, those in the market for some Latino fun might fancy Panama City.

This vibrant metropolis has become a new home for thousands of expats from around the globe thanks to the commerce – and its use of the US dollar – that exists within its sprawling skyline.

And should you need to hop to New York or Miami for business, it’s only a short plane ride away. Add in tropical beaches and luxury apartments with a city panorama for around £1,800 a month, and it’s an easy, breezy way to tap into the high life.

CYPRUS

Despite the presence of the RAF Akrotiri airbase on the island, the FCO isn’t warning British travellers off Cyprus, only advising ‘sensible precautions’.

With flights operating normally again, the sunshine isle is likely to still be popular this summer – and it has plenty of bougie boltholes that appear to have been built for a Dubai audience.

Take the City of Dreams, billed as ‘Europe’s premier five-star resort’ in Limassol, which subscribes to generic luxury in the way the Middle East does – only with a massive casino at its heart, dubbed ‘Europe’s grandest’ and promising VIP experiences.

For expats, Cyprus is a place to edge bets metaphorically too in the coming months.

If the Middle East war calms down, it’s only a short flight back to the UAE… and if it goes in the other direction, the UK is only around four hours away too.

KUALA LUMPUR

Gated communities, lavish properties and international schools galore, for families – like Rio and Kate Ferdinand and their children – who have seen their Dubai dream become ever more uncertain in recent weeks, the Malaysian capital could be just the ticket.

The exclusive neighbourhood of Mont Kiara is frequently dubbed the ‘Beverly Hills’ of Kuala Lumpur – and is one of the priciest places to reside in the Far Eastern city – but still comes in cheaper than renting a four-bed semi in Surrey with private school fees to consider.

LAS VEGAS

Sin City looks great on the socials and anyone who’s impressed by supercars, 24-hour casinos and big name restaurants will slot right in in this Nevada oasis.

Tourism is the big ticket, but commerce is huge too – and conventions keep the city’s hotel industry thriving as much as the big name stars with residencies on the Strip.

Expat communities including Summerlin and Henderson have been carefully designed – as in Dubai – to give overseas residents exactly what they need including swish gym facilities, pristine golf courses and manicured parks.

Concerns Arise Over the Future of Iconic Australian Business Amid Notable Repayment Delays

0

Concerns have been mounting regarding the future stability of one of Australia’s longest-standing department stores after a startling report highlighted payment delays to its suppliers.

Established in 1838, David Jones made headlines last year when it announced the closure of its Castle Hill and Tuggerah locations on the New South Wales Central Coast, slated for 2026.

Currently, the retailer operates over 40 stores across Australia, employing approximately 9,000 individuals in both Australia and New Zealand.

However, recent figures from commercial credit agency CreditorWatch reveal that David Jones is taking 16 days to settle its accounts with suppliers.

This duration significantly exceeds the industry norm, which typically sees payments completed in just seven days.

Businesses typically delay paying some invoices to balance cashflow, and this does not necessarily indicate a company is experiencing cashflow problems.

The agency ranked David Jones as having a ‘low’ risk of default within the next year.

This means ‘unfavourable economic conditions may lead to a weakened capability to meet financial commitments’, the report notes.

The retailer’s most recent financial report to ASIC in March 2025, seen by the Herald Sun, reported a net loss of $74.4million from $2.2billion in gross sales during the financial year up to June 30, 2024.

David Jones recorded a ‘bullet loan’ of $26.3million, which was due to ‘mature’ in September 2024 – meaning it must then be paid in full.

Another important loan was for $150million to fund working capital, which matures on March 27 this year.

It also reportedly extended payment times to its suppliers, raising questions over whether the $150million loan can be resolved by next week.

The Daily Mail has contacted David Jones’ business operations owner, Anchorage Capital Partners, for comment.

Many of David Jones’ major partners have already agreed to the streamlined payments approach, with further discussions underway.

A spokesperson for David Jones said the decision to push out payments to suppliers was part of broader approach across the company.

‘We are streamlining our operational and financial processes to build a stronger, more efficient, and more sustainable business model,’ they said.

‘This includes implementing a new supplier payment process within our Oracle finance system, enhancing our Purchase Order procedures and updating our standard payment terms to reflect these improvements and enable continued investment in growth and innovation.’

Private equity investors Anchorage Capital Partners bought David Jones’ operating business in 2022 for about $100million.

A statement from the company claimed customers have been benefiting from a $250million transformation program aimed at improving long-term growth.

‘This includes major store refurbishments, the launch of a mobile app, the evolution of its e-commerce platform, and the launch of a new loyalty program,’ they told the Herald Sun.

‘Trading conditions for David Jones in the first half of the 2026 financial year have been strong and show growth on the previous comparable period.

‘We intend to continue investing in the business, supported by our financial partners, and look forward to enabling continued growth and innovation for David Jones.’

Months of high inflation have squeezed Australian retailers, forcing many to cut staff, scale back operations or shut their doors entirely.

Peak policy and advocacy body Business NSW released its Business Conditions Survey (BCS) in December, which found companies in the state faced a tough lead-up to Christmas due to rising rates.

The study, conducted from November 2 to 17, revealed customers are spending less, pushing for discounts and delaying invoice payments when compared with last year.

Almost half (42 per cent) of businesses surveyed reported fewer purchases, while 37 per cent said average order sizes have shrunk.

Only 18 per cent had seen more frequent purchases.

Teaming up once again with renowned photographer Nick Knight for the magazine’s third edition, Moss seamlessly shifts between the opulence of classic Hollywood and the edgy chic of 1960s Paris.

In one captivating image, Moss reclines barefoot atop a lustrous gold piano, draped in a sleek black Gucci dress. Her tousled blonde locks cascade over her face, perfectly capturing the essence of Hollywood’s golden age.

Her softly sculpted waves and smouldering gaze completed the cinematic look.

The collaboration marks yet another chapter in her enduring creative partnership with Knight, who has previously likened her cultural reach to that of a ‘Hollywood blockbuster,’ describing her as ‘an incredibly good model’ and ‘very, very rare’ talent.

Meanwhile, make-up artist Charlotte Tilbury, 53, said: ‘Kate is the face of a generation. She’s magnetic, she’s a style icon, but her influence transcends beauty and fashion – she is a tastemaker who has truly shaped culture.

‘Kate has such a unique magnetism on set – there’s a magic that happens when she’s in front of the camera. The way she moves, the way she morphs into character, it’s truly something to behold. She has the most powerful authenticity – there’s only one Kate.’

It comes just weeks after Ms Moss returned to the Gucci catwalk to close the fashion house’s autumn/winter 2026 show in Milan, wearing a floor-length black sequined gown with a plunging open back.

In a nod to her nineties heyday, the look revealed a flash of a visible ‘whale tail’ G-string.

The moment marked a full-circle moment for the supermodel, who famously walked in Tom Ford’s debut Gucci collection in 1995, and this time joined a star-studded line-up including Karlie Kloss, 33, Emily Ratajkowski, 34, and Irina Shayk, 40.

The model appears to be ageing backwards after ditching her years of hard partying.

Nowadays, Kate has regular juice fasts, and favours the week-long juice-only programme at wellness LifeCo resort in Turkey – she’s visited every year for the past decade.

Kate is the proud owner of wellness business, Cosmoss which sells a range of own-brand teas, skincare products and a book of 150 ‘positive messages’.

A magazine source said: ‘The brand is late on the bandwagon — candles, serums and perfume are all quite middle-aged. But she’s been having lots of meetings with people and Cosmoss is stocked in Harrods. I know she has great hopes for it.’

Over the years, Kate has given an insight into how she stays looking so good, revealing her tips and tricks for maintaining her youthful look.

She told Net-A-Porter: ‘I stay hydrated on the flight and try to eat only light foods. I find adapting to the new time zone as soon as I arrive is helpful, so I try to stay up until my usual bedtime.’

Transform Your Posture Over 60 with This Quick 5-Minute Standing Routine, Trainer Reveals

0

This quick routine is designed to enhance your posture, stability, and range of movement.

Throughout our upbringing, we were often told to “stand up straight!” Proper posture is crucial, especially as we age. Not only does it improve your overall look, but it also plays a vital role in maintaining mobility, stability, and effective breathing. Good posture helps prevent a hunched back, fights against natural muscle deterioration with age, reduces the risk of bone density loss, and alleviates joint stiffness.

While you may have just adjusted your posture, we have something even better to offer. We consulted Corryne Hart, a BASI Pilates expert and Club Pilates Master Trainer, who provides a five-minute standing routine aimed at enhancing posture for those over 60.

“As we age, our posture often deteriorates because the muscles supporting the spine tend to weaken. Spinal discs may contract and joints can become less flexible, which frequently results in a curved upper back and a forward-leaning head. The encouraging news is that gentle exercises, such as Pilates, can bolster muscle strength, boost mobility, and help the body stand more erect and feel more supported,” Hart explains. “Even dedicating just a few minutes daily to standing Pilates can significantly improve posture. These exercises activate your entire postural system, from your feet and legs to your glutes, core, and back, teaching your body to support itself better while standing.”

“As we get older, it’s common for posture to change because the muscles that support our spine naturally lose strength. Spinal discs start to shrink and joints can stiffen, which often leads to a rounded upper back and forward head. The good news is that gentle movement, like Pilates, can help strengthen muscles, improve mobility, and help the body stand taller and feel more supported,” Hart tells us. “Even just a few minutes of standing Pilates each day can make a big difference in improving posture. These exercises engage your whole postural system, from your feet and legs to your glutes, core, and back, helping your body relearn how to support itself while upright.”

Below, Hart breaks down a five-minute workout that helps restore posture after 60. Have a sturdy chair nearby to hold onto for balance. Begin each exercise with your feet hip-distance apart, gently tighten your midsection, and roll your shoulders back and down.

Standing Chest Expansion

  1. From the start position, bring your arms slightly behind your body with your palms facing back.
  2. Breathe out as you press your arms back, lift through the chest, and draw your shoulders back and down.
  3. Breathe in to release your hands forward.
  4. Repeat for 10 reps.

Standing Leg Raises

  1. From the start position, bring your arms out to form a “T” position and pull your ribs in.
  2. Shift your body weight onto one leg, softening into your knee.
  3. Breathe out to lift the opposite leg slightly out to the side.
  4. Inhale as you return the leg back to the start position.
  5. Exhale to lift the leg slightly behind you.
  6. Alternate between the two movements 10 times before switching sides. Maintain a steady, upright torso.

Heel Raises With Arm Lifts

  1. From the start position, bring your arms out to form a “T” as you gently pull your ribcage in.
  2. Breathe out and lift your heels off the ground.
  3. Lower your heels with control.
  4. Repeat 10 times.

Side Bends

  1. From the start position, interlace your hands behind your head as you gently pull your ribcage in.
  2. Exhale and bend gently to one side, reaching your elbow toward the ground.
  3. Inhale as you return to standing.
  4. Alternate sides and repeat 10 times on each side.

Spine Twist With Knee Raise

  1. From the start position, interlace your hands behind your head and gently pull your ribcage in.
  2. Rotate your torso a few inches to one side, then pause.
  3. Lift the same-side knee in a gentle marching motion.
  4. Inhale as you return your foot to the floor.
  5. Untwist back to the center.
  6. Repeat 10 times before switching sides.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Allegedly Connected to Properties Overlooking Israeli Embassy in UK

0

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has been linked to two opulent apartments in London with views of the Israeli Embassy, a strategic location that security analysts suggest could allow for continuous observation, according to various reports.

These luxurious properties, worth several million dollars, are situated in Kensington, adjacent to the prominent embassy complex. They were pinpointed by UK media following a comprehensive year-long investigation into Khamenei’s potential foreign holdings.

The Times of London revealed on March 5 that one of these buildings is located directly next to the Israeli Embassy on Palace Green. This places the residences alarmingly close to one of Israel’s most sensitive diplomatic locations.

Media outlets have connected Mojtaba Khamenei to these London apartments near the Israeli Embassy in Kensington. Experts caution that the placement could facilitate Iranian monitoring of the embassy.

The findings are part of a Bloomberg investigation, which indicates that the Khamenei family might have an extensive international property portfolio. This includes high-value London real estate estimated at approximately $138 million, along with assets in various parts of Europe and the Gulf.

The two London apartments were reportedly acquired in 2014 and 2016 via intermediaries and occupy upper floors of the building, offering a direct vantage point toward the rear of the Israeli embassy compound, UK media reported.

A terrorism specialist quoted in reports said the positioning effectively means “Iran owns the view into the back of the Israeli Embassy from less than 50 meters away,” describing the situation as a potential “serious security breach.”

Roger Macmillan, a former director of security at the Iranian dissident satellite channel Iran International, also said the two apartments had “a direct line of sight, held through Mojtaba Khamenei. That’s not a property portfolio — it’s a permanent surveillance platform.”

“This is a serious security breach,” he added.

Further details from Bloomberg’s investigation indicated that a businessman acted as a financial conduit, buying up high-end properties on Khamenei’s behalf and channeling funds through a network of investments.

The investigation also found that 11 mansions on London’s “Billionaire’s Row” were purchased using an Isle of Man shell company.

The Financial Times has also similarly reported on links between Khamenei’s associates and luxury assets across Europe.

Khamenei, 56, has been viewed as a powerful figure within Iran’s ruling establishment, ultimately becoming the leading successor to his father, who was killed in a Tehran compound strike on Feb. 28.

So far, since he was selected by Iran’s Assembly of Experts, he has not been seen in public.

Tragedy Strikes as College Freshman is Shot by Masked Assailant During Evening Walk

0

In a heartbreaking incident, an 18-year-old freshman at Loyola University lost her life in a shooting that occurred early Thursday morning while she was walking with friends near a Lake Michigan beach.

Sheridan Gorman, a promising student, found herself at the Tobey Prinz Beach pier, close to her university’s Chicago campus, shortly after 2 a.m. According to WLS, the peaceful night was shattered when a masked individual approached the group on foot, brandishing a firearm and subsequently opening fire. Tragically, Gorman was struck in the head and succumbed to her injuries at the scene. Authorities have indicated that Gorman was not the intended victim, though they have not clarified if another member of the group was the actual target.

Loyola University expressed deep sorrow over the incident in an official statement, extending condolences to Gorman’s family, friends, and all who knew her. “This is a tragic loss, and our hearts go out to Sheridan’s family, loved ones, and all who knew her. We are in close contact with law enforcement as they investigate and work to understand the full circumstances of this tragedy,” the statement read. The university assured the community that there is currently no ongoing threat and promised to provide updates as more information becomes available.

Meanwhile, Gorman’s family, residing in Yorktown, New York, shared their grief in a statement to WMAQ, mourning the loss of their beloved daughter and sister.

Gorman’s family in Yorktown, New York, provided a statement to WMAQ.

“Our beloved daughter, Sheridan, was taken from us this morning in Chicago. There is no way to soften this—this was murder,” the statement said. “Sheridan was the light of our lives. She made people feel seen, safe, and loved simply by being who she was. She lived her faith with kindness, compassion, and joy, and she loved her family and friends deeply.”

The family acknowledged “the outpouring of support from the various communities connected to our family” and asked for privacy to process their grief.

Police said the group did not know the gunman.

Iran Launches Missile Attack on US and UK Military Base in Indian Ocean: Rising Tensions in Global Conflict

0

In a significant escalation, Iran has launched ballistic missiles towards a joint US-UK military base located in the Indian Ocean.

This development comes as the US-Israeli conflict with Iran nears its third week, following the initial attacks. President Donald Trump addressed reporters on Friday, indicating that the United States is contemplating a reduction in military operations.

President Trump expressed that the US forces are “getting very close” to achieving their objectives in the ongoing conflict.

However, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal on Friday evening, the Diego Garcia base was specifically targeted by two intermediate-range ballistic missiles.

US officials, speaking to the publication, confirmed that neither missile successfully hit the base. According to two sources, one missile failed during flight, while the other was intercepted by US defense systems.

The Daily Mail has reached out to the White House and the Pentagon for comment.

Diego Garcia is located on a remote island in British waters and houses US bombers, nuclear submarines and missile destroyers.

The base is around 4,000 kilometers from Iran. The strikes undermine Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi’s previous comments that Tehran limited ballistic missile range to only 2,000 kilometers.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio rejected the comments last month and claimed that Iran was ‘certainly trying to achieve intercontinental ballistic missiles,’ adding that Tehran’s nuclear capabilities were ‘headed in the pathway to one day being able to develop weapons that can reach the continental US.’

Trump blasted the UK government while speaking to reporters outside the White House on Friday, accusing British leadership of a slow response to allow the US to use their bases.

‘It’s been a very late response from the UK. I’m surprised because the relationship is so good, but this has never happened before,’ he said.

Trump said that the UK initially did not want to allow the US to use its island for the Diego Garcia base.

Araghchi responded to Trump’s remarks on X, urging Prime Minister Keir Starmer not to join US military efforts.

‘Vast majority of the British People do not want any part in the Israel-U.S. war of choice on Iran,’ he wrote.

‘Ignoring his own People, Mr. Starmer is putting British lives in danger by allowing UK bases to be used for aggression against Iran.’

Prime Minister Keir Starmer, pictured above, previously told Parliament that the UK would 'protect out people in the region'

Prime Minister Keir Starmer, pictured above, previously told Parliament that the UK would ‘protect out people in the region’

The minister then issued a chilling warning, concluding his statement: ‘Iran will exercise its right to self-defense.’

Starmer had previously only allowed British bases to be used by the US when targeting Iranian missile launchers attacking the UK and its allies, and not for defending traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.

The UK prime minister has stood firm that the country would not be dragged into the war in Iran.

‘We will protect our people in the region,’ Starmer told Parliament earlier this week.

‘We will take action to defend ourselves and our allies, and we will not be drawn into the wider war.’

The US and Israel have maintained that the main motivation for military action in Iran is to prevent the development of a nuclear weapon.

The Trump administration has projected confidence since the initial strikes, with the president declaring on Friday that he thinks ‘we’ve won.’

He added that he did not want to negotiate a ceasefire because the US was ‘literally obliterating the other side.’

Trump then accused Iran of ‘clogging up’ the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway on the north coast through which about a fifth of the world’s oil passes.

‘The Hormuz Strait will have to be guarded and policed, as necessary, by other Nations who use it — The United States does not! If asked, we will help these Countries in their Hormuz efforts, but it shouldn’t be necessary once Iran’s threat is eradicated,’ Trump later wrote on Truth Social.

Gabby Windey, one of the notable four out of 24 former stars, opted out of participating in the special episode of The Bachelorette: Before the First Rose. This event was broadcast on March 15, following the Oscars, and served as a prelude to the March 22 premiere of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives featuring Taylor Frankie Paul. During the special, past Bachelorettes came together to offer Taylor advice and share some behind-the-scenes anecdotes.

Among those who made an in-person appearance were Trista Rehn Sutter, the original Bachelorette, alongside Meredith Phillips, DeAnna Pappas, Ali Fedotowsky-Manno, Ashley Hebert-Rosenbaum, Emily Maynard-Johnson, Desiree Siegfried, Andi Dorfman-Hart, Kaitlyn Bristowe, JoJo Fletcher, Rachel Lindsay, Becca Kufrin, Hannah Brown-Woolard, Tayshia Adams, Katie Thurston, Rachel Recchia, Charity Lawson, and Joan Vassos, the first-ever Golden Bachelorette.

While Jillian Harris and Jenn Tran contributed via video messages, Jen Schefft, Clare Crawley, Michelle Young, and Gabby Windey were notably absent. Gabby made history during the 19th season of The Bachelorette in 2022 as part of the first-ever dual Bachelorette format with her close friend Rachel Recchia. Both women were top contenders, finishing in the top three on Clayton Echard’s season of The Bachelor, alongside the ultimate winner, Susie Evans.

Gabby’s journey on The Bachelorette concluded with her engagement to Eric Schwer, although their relationship ended after seven months. In a bold and personal revelation in August 2023, Gabby announced her relationship with comedian and TV writer Robby Hoffman, culminating in their marriage in January 2025.

Gabby got engaged to Eric Schwer at the end of The Bachelorette season 19, but they broke up seven months later. In August 2023, Gabby came out and announced her relationship with comedian and TV writer Robby Hoffman. They were married in January 2025.

Since The Bachelorette, Gabby placed second in Dancing With The Stars season 31 in 2022 and won The Traitors season 3 in 2025. Next, she’ll host Love Overboard, a new reality dating series.

In an interview with ET, Gabby revealed the simple reason that she skipped The Bachelorette: Before the First Rose ahead of Taylor’s season. She explained, “I was out of town.” When asked if she had FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) about it, she replied, “Always … I’ve just been so busy. So it’s hard to make everything work. But that’s amazing. I’m so happy for them to get together again.”

When asked how she thought Taylor will do as the Bachelorette, Gabby responded without hesitation, “I think she’ll crush.” Gabby added that choosing Taylor as the next Bachelorette was “genius.”

Taylor is breaking new ground on The Bachelorette as the first lead from outside of the franchise. She’s never appeared in a Bachelor season, but she’s no stranger to reality TV because she’s one of the stars of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives. The 31-year-old mother of three and influencer has been married before to Tate Paul, who is the father of two of her children. Her ex-boyfriend, Dakota Mortensen, is the father of her youngest child.

Although it was disappointing that Gabby couldn’t attend The Bachelorette: Before the First Rose reunion because she has such a great personality and would’ve been fun to watch, it’s wonderful to hear that she’s busy doing other things. Perhaps Gabby can offer some advice to Taylor in another capacity in the future. She had one of the most unique experiences on the show, and, although she didn’t find a lasting relationship on The Bachelorette, her own personal journey led to her finding the love of her life.

The Bachelorette season 22 starring Taylor Frankie Paul premieres Sunday, March 22 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.

Karl-Anthony Towns Takes Father’s Advice to Heart, Leads Team to Victory

Karl-Anthony Towns found himself unexpectedly at Barclays Center on Friday night, heeding his father’s request. Despite not planning to play, Towns delivered an impressive performance with 26 points and 15 rebounds, leading to a narrow 93-92 victory over the Nets.

“Playing wasn’t in the cards initially. But my dad was insistent about me taking the court,” Towns explained. Although initially marked as questionable due to personal matters, he committed to participating. “I decided to play just for the night. Afterward, I’ll head back to be by his side during his recovery journey.”

Karl Sr., who once starred at Monmouth University, is a familiar face at Towns’ games, often traveling alongside the Knicks as they journey from city to city.

Towns faced the profound loss of his mother, Jacqueline Cruz, to COVID-19 in 2020.

According to sources, the medical condition affecting Karl Sr. is not considered life-threatening.

The Nets still haven’t officially ruled Michael Porter Jr. out for the rest of the season, but they might as well have.

Brooklyn shut Porter down with a left hamstring strain and said he’d be evaluated in two to three weeks.

Asked if Porter could return this season, Nets coach Jordi Fernández said: “So, two to three weeks, and then obviously there’s a ramp-up to go back to competition level, so we cannot predict. But it will be close. So we’re going to go through these two, three weeks and then put the work in and so forth; and then we’ll see where we’re at.”

With three weeks being the penultimate game April 10 in Milwaukee and the finale two nights later in Toronto, any ramp-up strains credulity.

Noah Clowney missed Friday’s game with a sprained right wrist and sounds unlikely to play Sundayat Sacramento.

“Yeah, I mean obviously I had to take him out because he was really sore,” Fernández said.

“And Noah, right away when I saw that he was in pain, I was like, ‘Do you need a sub?’ And I’m like asking the guys to take a foul to be able to sub out, and I ended up calling a timeout. So he was pretty sore. He has a sprained wrist. He’ll be out [Friday], most likely he’ll be out next game, and then we’ll go from there.”

Terance Mann (illness), Egor Dëmin (plantar fasciitis), Day’Ron Sharpe (thumb) were out for Brooklyn.

Jalen Brunson, who sat out Tuesday’s win over Indiana, returned to the lineup for his 65th game, qualifying for postseason awards.

The Knicks guard is expected to land an All-NBA selection and is the reigning Clutch Player of the Year.

Josh Hart was out with runner’s knee.

Brooklyn’s Josh Minott had 22 points and hit 6-for-9 from deep.

The six 3-pointers were a career best and the scoring was two points off his career high.

He added five boards, two blocks and a steal in 25:47 off the bench.

Homeland Security Funding Stalls: What It Means for Your Airport Experience

0

WASHINGTON — Efforts to secure funding for the Department of Homeland Security hit a roadblock in the Senate on Friday, as a proposal failed to advance amid mounting concerns over lengthy security lines at major U.S. airports.

Senate Democrats withheld their support for the measure, preventing it from moving forward. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer of New York announced plans to introduce an alternative funding proposal on Saturday, focusing solely on the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), which is responsible for screening passengers and luggage. However, this effort is also expected to face challenges during the Senate’s unusual weekend session.

Meanwhile, behind closed doors, negotiations continued in earnest on Friday. White House border czar Tom Homan engaged in a second day of discussions with a bipartisan group of senators. The talks are part of broader Democratic demands for changes in immigration enforcement practices following the tragic shootings of Alex Pretti and Renee Good in Minneapolis.

Democratic participants in the meeting with Homan remained tight-lipped afterward. However, Republican Senator Susan Collins, who chairs the Senate Appropriations Committee, noted that the White House has enhanced its proposal in an attempt to break the deadlock, though she refrained from providing details.

“It’s a very fair, reasonable offer,” Collins remarked, expressing hope that negotiations would resume on Saturday. “But that depends on whether the Democrats come back with a response.”

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., said that he sees “deal space” coming out of the discussions with the White House. But he also questioned whether Democrats were serious about reaching any agreement that would provide more money for Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

“This is a pox on everybody’s house,” Thune said. “You’ve got people standing in lines at the airports. This needs to be fixed. It needs to get resolved and there are good-faith efforts being made finally on all the relevant issues.”

On the Senate floor, Schumer said he agreed that TSA needs to be reopened as quickly as possible – but not under the terms Republicans are offering, which is to fund the entire Homeland Security department. Democrats are looking to fund TSA while continuing negotiations on Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

“Tomorrow, America will see the matter crystal clear: which senators want to open up TSA, pay TSA workers, and end the chaos at our airports, and which senators are going to block TSA funding yet again,” Schumer said.

The vast majority of employees at TSA are considered essential and continue to work during the government funding lapse, but they are doing so without pay. Call-out rates have started to increase at some airports, leading to longer screening times for many passengers.

Democrats have demanded an array of policy changes as part of a funding bill that include requiring ICE agents to get a warrant from a judge before forcefully entering homes. They also are looking to require agents to wear identifying information on their uniforms and ban the use of masks.

“The American people have had enough of this rogue agency. We need to rein it in. And we are negotiating right now over how to do that,” said Sen. Patty Murray, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Appropriations Committee.

The Trump administration says it has agreed to several changes already, including expanded use of body-worn cameras, with an exception for undercover operations, and limited civil enforcement activities at certain sensitive locations, such as hospitals, schools and places of worship. Republicans also note that Trump has fired Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and put Homan in charge of operations in Minneapolis, actions they say show the administration’s intent to make changes in ICE’s operations.

Congress is scheduled to go on an extended break near the end of the month for a two-week Easter recess. Thune has threatened to keep senators in Washington if the impasse is not resolved.

“I can’t see us taking a break if the government is still shut down,” Thune said.
