Chicago Mayor Issues Warning as Viral Video Captures Teens’ Dangerous Street Takeover

0

Last week, the bustling streets of Chicago were overtaken by a sea of young faces, engaging in what Mayor Brandon Johnson has termed “teen trends,” a phenomenon he cautions could escalate into dangerous situations.

Footage obtained by Fox News through ChitownCrimeChasers vividly illustrates the scene from March 30, with throngs of teenagers filling the streets and sidewalks, congregating around parked cars and navigating intersections en masse.

Additional video snippets from that evening depict a lively atmosphere with various individuals dancing and mingling amidst the urban backdrop. However, some recordings also capture moments where participants climbed atop vehicles and engaged in brief skirmishes amidst the crowd.

In the Hyde Park neighborhood, locals reported that this youthful takeover persisted for hours, stretching late into the night, leaving a significant impact on the community.

The events of March 30 have left Chicago residents and officials reflecting on the implications of such gatherings, as they seek to balance youthful exuberance with public safety concerns.

One resident, Jason Hale, said his car was among roughly 30 affected by crowds in Chicago that night.

“Yeah, it’s bad. The hood is messed up, terrible. A thousand worth of damage, dents everywhere, footprints everywhere,” Hale told FOX 32 Chicago.

Video shows groups of teens standing and moving on top of parked vehicles as crowds formed around them.

Chicago police confirmed to the local outlet that three curfew violations were issued in connection with the gathering. A 16-year-old girl was also charged with unlawful possession of a weapon and disorderly conduct.

City officials and police have described these gatherings, which are often organized through social media, as part of a broader, growing trend across Chicago.

Recent events have drawn large crowds to neighborhoods including downtown and Hyde Park, with activity ranging from social gatherings to more chaotic crowd movement.

Johnson released a public service announcement telling parents to not let their kids attend the increasingly popular “teen trends across the city.”

“We’re currently tracking five. That’s right. Five teen trends across the city this weekend,” the mayor said in an April 3 message. “I’m calling on all parents. Check in with your children. See where they plan to be this weekend. Please, do not allow your child to attend any of these trends this weekend.”

“They’re unsafe, and they can turn deadly. Our police officers will be out enforcing the city’s 10 p.m. curfew,” he said.

Some residents say the repeated gatherings are raising concerns about safety and quality of life.

Hale said the incident has prompted him to reconsider staying in the city.

“Your kids should not be out here… I had parents who guided me,” he said. “And these parents, they just let them run rampant.”

Joseph Duggar Gains Family Support Through Heartfelt Jail Letter Amid Legal Struggles

0

Joseph Duggar found solace in a letter from his brother-in-law while facing molestation charges. The message arrived during his detention following an arrest last month.

Austin Forsyth, who is married to Joseph’s sister Joy-Anna, advised the 31-year-old to turn to his faith during this challenging period. Forsyth, 32, emphasized the importance of spiritual strength in his note.

“I want you to know that I love you!” Forsyth expressed in the letter dated March 25. It was sent to the Washington County Detention Facility in Arkansas and later shared by People.

Forsyth reassured Joseph, stating, “Jesus loves you, and continues to draw you closer to Him. God works despite the sin of man for his good.”

While Forsyth acknowledged the gravity of the accusations, stemming from an alleged 2020 incident involving a nine-year-old girl, he chose not to delve into those matters in their correspondence.

Daily Mail has reached out to representatives for the family for further comment on the story.

Joseph has pleaded not guilty to a pair of counts of lewd and lascivious behavior and is slated to appear in court May 18; in the letter, which came before Joseph’s release on a $600,000 bond, Forsyth advised Joseph to ‘only be talking to your attorney.’

In the letter, Forsyth said he was ‘praising God’ that he and his wife Joy-Anna ‘started getting closer to’ Joseph and his wife Kendra ‘within the last year and a half.’

Kendra, 27, was arrested March 20 in connection with endangering the welfare of a minor and false imprisonment, later being released on bond.

Forsyth said God ‘knew that Kendra was going to need help,’ saying he and his wife ‘will, and are helping her!’

Joseph replied with gratitude to Forsyth and his sister for their support of Kendra while he sat behind bars.

‘It means the world to have family like you!’ he said. ‘I’m soo [grateful] for all the people that [have] jumped right in and been there to support [her] … love [y’all] so much!’

Joy-Anna, 28, said in a statement on March 25, ‘My heart is with the victim, and I am grieved by the pain and harm caused. I have been a wreck this week and am taking time to process.

‘I have a few pre-filmed commitments that I have to post, but I will be taking some much-needed time with my family. Thank you for your prayers.’

Joseph was arrested in connection with lewd and lascivious molestation of a victim less than 12-years-old, authorities with Florida’s Bay County Sheriff’s Office said last month.

The incident involving Joe occurred in 2020 in Panama City Beach, Florida during a vacation, according to authorities.

‘As the vacation continued, he also asked [the victim] to sit next to him on a couch and covered them with a blanket,’ officials said. ‘During this time, Duggar manipulated the victim’s underwear and grazed her genitals.

‘Duggar would also continue to rub his hands on her thighs. The victim stated Duggar eventually apologized for his actions and the incidents stopped after the apology.’

Joseph was also charged with lewd and lascivious behavior conducted by a person 18 years or older, officials said.

Joseph and Kendra wed in 2017 and are parents to four young children – ages seven, six, five and three.

Joseph’s arrest is not the first time one of the members of the reality TV family have been caught up in a legal situation involving underage sex.

Oldest son Josh’s past molestation of five young girls led to the swift cancellation of the family’s TLC series in 2015.

The show, which began airing in 2008, was centered on Michelle and Jim Bob, the devout Arkansas couple who named all 19 of their children with the first letter J.

Jim Bob and wife Michelle posted a statement on Facebook at the time explaining how they dealt with the initial incident.

‘Back 12 years ago our family went through one of the most difficult times of our lives,’ they said in a May 21, 2015 Facebook post. ‘When Josh was a young teenager, he made some very bad mistakes and we were shocked.

‘We had tried to teach him right from wrong. That dark and difficult time caused us to seek God like never before.’

Jim Bob and Michelle continued, ‘We pray that as people watch our lives they see that we are not a perfect family. We have challenges and struggles everyday. ‘

Seun Kuti Reveals Surprising Truth About Fela Kuti’s Family Dynamics

  • Seun Kuti, an Afrobeat artist, discussed his late father, Fela Kuti, in a recent Instagram livestream.
  • He claimed that Fela Kuti contracted HIV from one of his multiple wives.
  • Seun refuted claims that Fela transmitted the virus to his partners, clarifying that Fela was the one who was affected.

In a recent revelation, Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has spoken about a sensitive chapter in his family history, alleging that his late father, the legendary Fela Kuti, contracted HIV from one of his numerous wives. This claim came to light during an Instagram livestream, where Seun sought to address and dispel rumors surrounding the circumstances of Fela’s illness.

Seun specifically countered the widespread belief that Fela may have transmitted the virus to his partners. Instead, he emphasized that it was Fela himself who was infected, shifting the narrative that has long surrounded his father’s legacy. He added a deeply personal perspective, shedding light on Fela’s marriage dynamics.

In an introspective moment, Seun shared that Fela allowed his wives the freedom to pursue relationships outside their marriage. Looking back, Seun considers this as one of his father’s significant errors in judgment. He remarked, “Fela made many mistakes. One of the mistakes he made – one day, I saw a video of a lady online saying why are people praising Fela’s legacy despite him giving women HIV and dying of AIDS.”

Kuti said, “Fela made many mistakes. One of the mistakes he made -one day, I saw a video of a lady online saying why are people praising Fela’s legacy despite him giving women HIV and dying of AIDS.

“I said, ‘Oh, Fela, you see yourself?’ If Fela was a traditional man, he would still be alive. I will tell you something about him that you might not have known, Fela’s women all had other men.

“Fela did not keep his women to himself. He believed that as he is free to sleep with all the women, the women are also free to meet other men. His law was that they shouldn’t bring the men to his house.

“My father doesn’t leave his house to sleep with other women outside, so it was his women who brought HIV home to him. Nobody is perfect. Everybody make mistakes. But Fela is a man that is on the side of humanity.”

In other news… A Nigerian lady has sparked widespread discussion online after making a heartfelt plea for help in finding a life partner as she nears her 28th birthday.

In a moving video posted on social media, she shared her worries about still being single, expressing a desire not to spend another birthday alone.

She clarified that her focus isn’t on a partner’s wealth, but rather on finding companionship and a genuine marital connection.

Speaking in a blend of Yoruba and English, she appealed to viewers to assist her in her search for a husband.

“Nigerians please help me I need husband. I’ll be 28 next week. I don’t want to celebrate this 28 years alone. Ejor o, mo need Oko o! Please help me find a husband, money is not the problem for me. Why don’t you guys want to marry us anymore? Am I not beautiful enough?”

Former Olympian Releases Heartfelt Statement Following Wife Melissa’s Passing

0

Rohan Dennis, an Olympic cyclist, has publicly urged the media to “back off” and accused journalists of promoting a “false narrative.” This marks his first public statement since his court appearance related to the tragic death of his wife.

Last year in May, Dennis, 35, received a suspended jail sentence following the unfortunate incident where his wife, Melissa Hoskins, 32, was fatally hit by his vehicle near their residence in Medindie, Adelaide, on December 30, 2023.

Recently, Dennis took to Instagram to address the intense media scrutiny surrounding him. He defended himself against criticisms related to a post about his Porsche and strongly asserted that he “loved Melissa” and was not an abuser.

“The last thing I ever wanted was to hurt her,” Dennis expressed in his heartfelt message.

He further emphasized, “Never in my life has any physical aggression crossed my mind in any disagreement with Melissa.”

“The narrative which the media ran with was clear they wanted me to look like the husband who abused his wife.”

Dennis said he and his family have been mistreated by the media in the wake of Hoskins’ death and the subsequent court case.

He said journalists had greeted him at the airport the day after Hoskins died and asked him inappropriate questions.

The ex-cyclist alleged reporters made “disgusting” remarks in front of his children and openly asked if he was a murderer.

“The media speak about the children and how saddened they are for the children,” Dennis continued.

“Yet they happily stalk, follow and harass not just adults in my family but even when the kids are involved.”

Dennis said his words had been “twisted” and that he never “intentionally or unintentionally used a vehicle as a weapon”.

“Never was it legally said that I did either,” he added.

“The video footage of the accident also proves this statement.”

He finished the statement with a final plea: “Time for all you so called [sic] journalists and media outlets to back off and leave my family alone.”

Victims’ Rights Commissioner Sarah Quick described Dennis’ post about his car last month as “deeply offensive”.

“It also reflects a profound lack of respect for Melissa and her family, who continue to live with the consequences of that harm every day,” Quick told nine.com.au in a statement.

Dennis pleaded guilty to committing an aggravated act likely to cause harm, but was not held criminally responsible for his wife’s death.

He was given a 17-month suspended prison term with a two-year good behaviour bond and was suspended from driving for two years.

During sentencing submissions in the SA District Court last year, Hoskins’ mother Amanda said her daughter had loved Dennis and “and I know that you would never intentionally hurt her”.

“I believe this is a tragic accident. Your temper is your downfall and needs to be addressed,” she said.

During his competitive career, Dennis won two world titles in the road time trial, as well as silver in the team pursuit at the 2012 Olympics and bronze in the road time trial at the Tokyo Olympics.

Rep. Roy Proposes New Bill Linking 60-Day DHS Funding to SAVE America Act

0

Representative Chip Roy from Texas has introduced a new legislative proposal aimed at reviving the 60-day funding measure for the Department of Homeland Security previously approved by the House. This proposal also includes the SAVE America Act, highlighting the determination of some Republican members of the House to advance the election-security package, even as the Senate appears to be moving towards a reconciliation approach.

Roy’s proposed bill seeks to merge the House-approved continuing resolution, which would finance all DHS operations for an additional 60 days, with the SAVE America Act. This act mandates citizenship proof for voter registration, requires voter identification, limits universal mail-in voting to specific circumstances like disability, illness, travel, or military duties, and establishes protections for women’s sports and a prohibition on transgender surgeries for minors.

The proposed legislation, named the “Homeland Security and Further Additional Continuing Appropriations Act, 2026,” is structured into three sections: comprehensive DHS appropriations for the full year, an additional continuing resolution, and the SAVE America Act. The continuing resolution segment aims to revise the current stopgap funding legislation by extending its duration until the enactment date and specifying coverage from February 14, 2026, when DHS funding initially lapsed.

This proposal dismisses the current DHS funding setup by stating that any references in the explanatory statement concerning U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and CBP Border Security Operations will be invalid. It designates the funding amounts for these accounts in the “Department of Homeland Security Act, 2026” table as zero and prohibits any fund transfers to the CBP Border Security Operations account listed in the DHS appropriations table.

In an exclusive statement to Breitbart News, Roy elaborated on his intentions, emphasizing the importance of this legislative package.

The House GOP has acted responsibly, passing the SAVE America Act and fully funding DHS four times. We should not concede to Democrat demands, putting ICE and Border Patrol funding at risk through a reconciliation strategy that sets a bad precedent. Instead, we should double down and pass this bill I just filed, which would fully fund our agents and also pass the SAVE America Act — President Trump’s top priority to secure our elections. Following passage of my bill, we should go on offense and move a reconciliation bill quickly that funds all of DHS along with key America First priorities like defense.

The bill text would additionally enact the SAVE America Act’s citizenship verification provisions. It states that “documentary proof of United States citizenship” would include “a valid United States passport,” a REAL ID-compliant identification showing citizenship, or certain military or government-issued identification showing birth in the United States.

Roy’s proposal comes after President Donald Trump repeatedly said he does not want any DHS funding deal unless it includes the SAVE America Act. On March 22, Trump said Democrats wanted a deal on DHS funding but that he did not think “any deal should be made on this until they approve SAVE America.” Trump later wrote on Truth Social that Republicans should not make a deal with Democrats unless they voted to pass the SAVE America Act.

Trump doubled down on March 26, calling on Senate Republicans to eliminate the filibuster if necessary to pass DHS funding and the SAVE America Act. He urged Republicans to “TERMINATE THE FILIBUSTER” and add “the complete, all five items, SAVE AMERICA ACT items.”

The renewed push also comes after the House and Senate diverged sharply over DHS funding. On March 27, House conservatives rejected the Senate-passed package because it omitted funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement removal operations and Customs and Border Protection. Speaker Mike Johnson then agreed to move a 60-day stopgap measure that funded all of DHS, including ICE and CBP, after meeting with the House Freedom Caucus.

At the time, Roy said, “The Senate bill is a non-starter,” and said the House would send back legislation standing with CBP and ICE. House conservatives argued that DHS funding should be tied to provisions such as voter identification and border security.

The Senate, however, has increasingly moved toward addressing ICE and border funding through budget reconciliation, which would require only 51 votes. Senate Majority Leader John Thune signaled Republicans would likely pursue that route after the Senate passed its DHS package.

Roy previously indicated he could have accepted a compromise funding all of DHS except ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations, saying April 1 that he was considering such an approach and then addressing ERO funding later through reconciliation.

Roy has also warned that relying on reconciliation to fund DHS would be “dangerous” because it would move homeland security funding outside the normal appropriations process and might not happen quickly enough. He said reconciliation may ultimately be necessary if Democrats refuse to support DHS funding, but argued it is a risky precedent.

Travel Advisory Issued as Two Powerful Cyclones Approach Popular Pacific Island Destinations

Australians planning to visit Fiji or Papua New Guinea have been alerted to potential disruptions due to two cyclones in the region.

On Tuesday, Cyclone Maila was located near Fiji, while Cyclone Vaianu was positioned between the Solomon Islands and eastern Papua New Guinea. Both were classified as severe tropical cyclones.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade cautioned travelers in the impacted areas about the possibility of intense winds, torrential rain, and sudden flooding.

Smartraveller advised, “Be aware of your accommodation’s evacuation plan. If a cyclone is heading your way, locate the nearest shelter and adhere to guidance from local officials.”

‘Know your accommodation’s evacuation plan. If a cyclone is approaching your area, find your nearest shelter and follow the advice of local authorities,’ Smartraveller said.

Cyclones have the potential to disrupt transport and other essential services.

Ground operations at Nadi International Airport were temporarily suspended due to poor conditions on Tuesday morning.

Travellers who are concerned their flights could be affected by a cyclone were urged to contact their airline or travel provider.

Cyclone Maila is not expected to impact Australia but may hit New Zealand by the weekend, including its largest city – Auckland.

The system is currently ‘causing heavy rain and strong winds as it passes west of Fiji and east of Vanuatu, without making landfall in either nation’, Weatherzone meteorologist Anthony Sharwood said.

Cyclone Vaianu is forecast to make landfall in Far North Queensland in the coming days.

‘The relatively slow-moving system is projected to impact the far southeastern tip of PNG by Friday morning,’ Mr Sharwood said.

‘It’s then expected to move towards the Far North Queensland coast by the weekend, potentially making landfall over the weekend or early next week.

‘At this stage, it is not known how strong the cyclone is likely to be if and when it crosses the Australian coastline.’

The Bureau of Meteorology upgraded Tropical Cyclone Maila to a category four system on Tuesday afternoon.

‘Maila is expected to remain well away from the Queensland coast during the next few days, but from late week Maila is forecast to be moving towards the Far North Queensland coast,’ it said.

‘It may cross the Cape York Peninsula during the weekend or early next week.’

Trump Pledges to Incarcerate Whistleblower Over Leaked Military Strategy

Donald Trump has pledged to identify the ‘sick’ individual responsible for leaking information about the US search for a second missing airman, following the downing of a fighter jet over Iran.

During a briefing on Monday, the President declared that the unnamed media outlet responsible for the disclosure would be compelled to reveal its source or face imprisonment.

“We’re going to approach the media company that published this and warn them: ‘National security is at stake. Surrender the source or prepare for jail time,'” Trump asserted.

The incident involved two airmen who went missing when their F-15E fighter jet was shot down behind enemy lines on Good Friday. The pilot was swiftly rescued, but the jet’s weapons system operator (WSO) remained unaccounted for until Sunday morning.

The news of the second airman’s status was initially reported by an Israeli outlet on Friday, which was soon corroborated by reports from US media.

Trump said that the press reports alerted the Iranians that there was still a live classified operation to find a second airman, putting US lives at risk.

‘They didn’t know there was somebody missing until this leaker gave the information,’ Trump said. ‘All of a sudden, the entire country of Iran knew that there was a pilot that was somewhere on their land that was fighting for his life.’

Trump added: ‘We have to find that leaker, because that’s a sick person.’

President Donald Trump warned that his administration is hunting for a leaker who told the press about the successful rescue of a US pilot in Iran on Friday. The report tipped of Iran that there was another service member still at-large, Trump said, adding it endangered the individuals life

Following the crash, Iranian military forces put a $60,000 bounty on the airman's head, prompting Iranian militants to hunt for him in the mountains. (Pictured: Bakhtiari tribes in Khuzestan headed into the mountains, rifles in hand, searching for the missing American F-15 jet pilot)

A White House official later confirmed to the Daily Mail that an investigation is underway.

The news of the rescued F-15E pilot appears to have first been reported on X by an Israeli journalist, who works for Tel-Aviv-based outlet Channel 12.

‘Western source: One of the American crew members was successfully rescued,’ the reporter Amit Segal posted Friday around 11.20am ET.

‘I’m not sure I was the first,’ he told the New York Post. ‘And anyway — I will protect my sources.’

Tommy Vietor, a former spokesman for Barack Obama, noted that the reporter was based in Israel, which could complicate Trump’s efforts.

‘Does that mean Trump is going to prosecute Israeli journalists or media execs, including ones close to Netanyahu?’ Vietor posted on X. ‘What if the source was Netanyahu himself or his team?’

The initial report was quickly followed by confirmations from Axios, CBS News and Reuters.

The White House did not immediately respond to the Daily Mail’s request for comment about which outlet and reporter will be targeted for jail time.

The WSO spent nearly 48 hours in Iran, the majority of them on the ground evading Iranian hunting parties who were offered bounties for the airman’s capture.

The unnamed service member, who alongside the pilot flew under the call sign ‘Dude 44,’ landed far away from his crew member and was injured early on after ejecting from the F-15E.

Neither the US military nor intelligence agencies were able to get ahold of the WSO for a long period of time, whereas the F-15E pilot was rescued by special operations commandos within a few hours.

Eventually the WSO radioed in ‘God is good,’ and US forces began tracking and planning for his extraction.

Trump on Monday described an all-hands-on-deck operation that employed 155 aircraft – including 64 fighter jets, 48 refueling tankers, 13 rescue aircraft, three helicopters ‘and more.’

Trump lauded ‘a breathtaking show of skill and precision, lethality and force’ as US forces swooped on mountainous terrain in southern Iran to rescue the weapons systems officer whose F-15E fighter jet went down on Good Friday.

‘He scaled cliff faces, bleeding rather profusely, contacted his platoon, treated his own wounds and contacted American forces,’ Trump said of the officer, who was rescued on Easter Sunday.

‘God was watching us,’ the President said of the successful, odds-defying operation.

Where should the line be between press freedom and national security?

How the daring extraction unfolded

A F-15 E Strike Eagle is apparently hit by Iranian fire. Tehran said it is deploying new anti-aircraft weapons and there are suspicions an advanced passive infrared detection system was used to guide a missile. Both pilot and weapons systems officer eject.

Weapons systems officer, a lieutenant colonel, is injured during the ejection and becomes separated from the pilot. US special forces HH-60W Jolly Green 2 helicopters fly in and come under fire from Iranians. They rescue the pilot but are unable to reach the other crewman. Two helicopters are hit and the crew are injured but they are able to escape Iranian airspace. An A-10 Warthog was also hit by fire and later crashed in the Strait of Hormuz. An MC-130J refuelling aircraft is filmed fuelling two helicopters over the crash site. Iranians are also filmed firing at one rescue helicopter.

The Weapons Systems Officer starts hiking away from the wreck site and evades detection by Iranian Forces. Armed with just a hand gun and injured but mobile, the senior officer headed for higher ground. The experienced colonel used his SERE training (Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape), an escape doctrine drilled into every American combat aircrew. He activated his emergency beacon and lay low, waiting for an unlikely rescue. Although he could use his emergency beacon to contact rescuers, it also risked giving his location away to the enemy.

American forces hunt for the officer, while he hiked at least 20 kilometres and climbed 7,000 feet up a mountain. He is eventually located by the CIA, although it is unclear how. The CIA starts a deception operation to convince Iranians that the officer has already been rescued. MQ-9 Reaper Drones watch over the officer and attack any Iranians who get within 3 kilometres of his location. Two drones were shot down and they attacked mulitple Iran Revolutionary Guard Corps search parties. Iranian media offers a $60,000 reward for the capture of the officer.

US special forces launch a second rescue mission with commandos from the elite SEAL Team 6, also known as DEVGRU and land at a desert airstrip near the town of Mahyar. The Navy Seals fly in four MH-6 Little Birds and rescue the officer from the mountain top, before returning to the desert airstrip.

The two C-130 aircraft got stuck in the dirt at the desert landing strip, forcing the US to deploy three new Dash-8 rescue aircrafts. The commandos blow up the two stuck aircraft and at least one helicopter, to deny them to the enemy, before making their escape.

Gas Prices Surge Amidst Imminent Deadline for Reopening of Strait of Hormuz by Former President Trump

0

The cost of gasoline in the United States saw a minor uptick on Tuesday, with the average price for a gallon reaching $4.140, up slightly from Monday’s $4.119. This increase comes amid ongoing geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainties.

On the national stage, gas prices are inching upward, largely influenced by the continuing trade tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and the volatile rhetoric from President Donald Trump. According to AAA, the average price of a regular gallon of gas hit $4.140 on Tuesday. This marks a consistent rise in prices since they surpassed the $4 mark last week for the first time since 2022.

The West Coast remains the priciest region for gasoline, with California leading the charge at $5.930 per gallon, closely followed by Hawaii at $5.604 and Washington at $5.392. In contrast, more affordable prices can be found in the Great Plains and parts of the South. Oklahoma offers the lowest average at $3.347 per gallon, with Kansas at $3.390 and both Iowa and North Dakota at $3.484.

Adding to the dramatic landscape of fuel prices, a rural gas station in Northern California caught attention last Friday when it reportedly charged $10 per gallon for regular fuel. The price was so exorbitant that it exceeded the capacity of the station’s display, forcing it to show $9.99 instead, as reported by The Los Angeles Times.

Last Friday, The Los Angeles Times reported that a rural gas station in Northern California was selling regular fuel for $10 per gallon. The price was so high that the vendor was unable to accurately list the price outside the station, listing $9.99 instead.

Diesel prices also continued to rise, reaching $5.646 per gallon Tuesday — just 2 cents below the record high. That’s up from $5.618 on Monday and up from $5.454 last week.

Why are gas and diesel prices rising?

Prices began to rise sharply after the U.S. and Israeli attack on Iran on Feb. 28, which led to escalating tensions and military conflicts across the Middle East, where a large majority of global oil is sourced and distributed.

While not the sole factor for rising costs, volatile trade routes and other uncertainties in production have led to higher prices of crude oil, which is refined to make diesel, gasoline and jet fuel.

Crude oil has surpassed $100 per barrel several times in recent weeks, driving higher fuel costs. Rising diesel and jet fuel prices are also expected to increase transportation and air travel costs, potentially pushing up prices for goods across supply chains.

The Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly 20 percent of global oil passes, has effectively been closed off by Iran’s military. The country faces mounting international pressure to reopen, including threats of military action by U.S. President Donald Trump.

The White House issued a statement March 31, essentially urging consumers to be patient.

“When Operation Epic Fury is complete, gas prices will plummet back to the multi-year lows American drivers enjoyed before these short-term disruptions,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said. “President Trump remains committed to fully unleashing American energy dominance, lowering costs, and putting more money back in the pockets of hardworking American families.”

Seasonal demand is also contributing to the increase, as warmer weather and spring break travel typically lead to higher gasoline consumption, according to AAA.

What factors into gas prices?

A lot of it is outside the gas retailer’s control. Roughly half the price at the pump pays for the cost of crude oil, the main ingredient in gasoline, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. About 20% goes to refiners who turn crude into gas.

Those costs have risen as crude oil prices jumped in response to the war and shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. Gas retailers are adjusting the price at the pump to account for the higher price they just paid for their next shipment of gasoline.

Taxes — federal, state and local — account for nearly 20% of the price, while about 10% is left for retailers, who still have to pay for transportation, labor and other expenses.

Retailers’ markup has averaged about 38 cents a gallon over the past five years, according to the convenience store trade group NACS, citing data from research firm OPIS. After expenses, stations may keep roughly 15 cents per gallon, said Jeff Lenard, a vice president at NACS.

“Some make more, some make less,” Lenard said.

Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, compared it to a homeowner’s role in setting their sale price.

“If I was selling a house today, I’d be beholden to whatever the housing market is,” De Haan said. “That’s the same for gas station owners. Whatever the price of oil and gasoline are, they are a price taker, not maker.”

Why might prices differ from one gas station to the next?

Although the national average just passed $4 a gallon, the price that drivers pay varies widely by state, city and station.

Taxes alone can create large gaps. California’s gas taxes and fees totaled about 71 cents per gallon last year, compared with roughly 9 cents in Alaska.

Distance from refineries, the type of retailer, how much volume the location goes through and whether there are other fuel options nearby also play a role.

Gas stations near competitors may choose to price gasoline competitively on large outdoor signs to attract drivers, hoping they’ll come inside and buy higher-margin items, said Neal Walters, a partner focused on energy at the global management consulting firm Kearney.

“It’s one of the only retail locations where you don’t have to go into the store to find out what you’re paying,” Walters said.

Highest average gasoline prices ever?

The record for the highest average price of a regular gallon of gas was set on June 14, 2022, with a national average of just over $5 during the early months of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The highest recorded average gallon of diesel, $5.816, came just five days later on June 19, 2022.

Strategies to Safeguard Your Savings through Payment Options

Let’s face it: receiving an unexpected letter from the IRS can ruin anyone’s week.

For retirees, however, such surprises can be particularly alarming and potentially financially crippling. You’ve spent years doing everything right—paying off your mortgage, building a solid nest egg, and planning for a peaceful retirement.

Then, out of the blue, a CP2000 notice arrives, alerting you to an “underreporter inquiry” and demanding payment that you simply don’t have in your checking account.

The immediate and natural reaction is to want the problem to disappear. For many, this means quickly accessing their Vanguard or Fidelity accounts, selling off some investments, and sending a check to the Treasury.

While this might seem like a quick fix, dipping into a traditional IRA or 401(k) to settle a tax bill can lead to a frustrating cycle of financial challenges.

Here is a look at why withdrawing from your retirement accounts can actually make things harder, and what your options are if you owe the IRS but can’t pay right away.

Why Using a 401(k) to Pay Tax Debt Can Backfire

Let’s look at the mechanics of what happens when you pull extra money out of a traditional retirement account.

Every dollar you withdraw is treated as ordinary income. If you add a sudden $30,000 withdrawal on top of your existing pension and Social Security, it changes your financial picture for the year. Suddenly, you might be bumped into a higher tax bracket and a larger portion of your Social Security benefits might become taxable.

Think of it this way: Let’s say you owe the IRS $20,000. You take $25,000 out of your 401(k) to cover the debt and give yourself a little cushion. Because of that extra income, your effective tax rate goes up. You’ve just inadvertently generated several thousand dollars in new taxes for next April, just to fix the problem you had this April.

When next year rolls around, you might find yourself needing to dip back into the 401(k) again. It’s a tough cycle to break, and it means giving up the compound interest those funds would have earned over the rest of your retirement.

Can the IRS take your retirement savings?

If you’re asking, “What should I do if I owe the IRS and I’m retired?” this is usually the very first question that comes to mind.

The short answer is technically yes, but the reality is much more nuanced.

The IRS does have significant collection tools. It can garnish wages, place liens on property and levy bank accounts. However, retirement accounts have specific protections under federal law. While the IRS can legally levy an IRA or a 401(k), in practice, it rarely ever does.

Internal Revenue Manual guidelines usually restrict agents from going after retirement accounts unless it has exhausted pretty much all other options. Even then, the IRS has to consider whether seizing those funds would create a severe financial hardship for you. For most middle-income retirees, draining a 401(k) is a clear hardship.

Your hard-earned money is generally much safer sitting in a protected retirement account than it is sitting in your standard checking or savings account. If you voluntarily withdraw the money to pay a tax bill, you lose those legal protections.

What happens if you owe the IRS and can’t pay?

Well, ignoring the letters won’t make them go away, and it usually just limits your options.

If tax debt goes unpaid, penalties and interest accrue over time. Eventually, the IRS will move from sending standard notices to sending a Notice of Intent to Levy. At that stage, it can contact your bank to freeze your liquid accounts.

It can also look at your Social Security. Through the Federal Payment Levy Program, the government can withhold up to 15% of your Social Security benefits to satisfy a tax debt. If you rely on that deposit for groceries and utilities, losing 15% is a hefty loss.

But it’s important to remember that you usually reach that point only if there is no communication. The IRS generally prefers to set up a payment arrangement rather than going through a drawn-out collection process.

IRS Payment Options for Retirees

You don’t necessarily have to empty your savings to get right with the IRS. There are several established frameworks designed for people who can’t pay a lump sum:

  • Installment Agreements: This is the most common route. It allows you to break your tax debt into manageable monthly payments, usually over 72 months. As long as you make the agreed-upon payment, aggressive collection actions (such as levies or garnishments) will stop.
  • Currently Not Collectible (CNC) Status: For retirees in tight financial spots, this can be a true lifeline. If you can show that paying your tax debt would stop you from covering basic, essential living expenses, the IRS can temporarily pause collections. The debt doesn’t go away, and interest still builds, but it removes the immediate threat to your bank accounts.
  • Offer in Compromise (OIC): This program allows you to settle your tax debt for less than the full amount owed. The IRS accepts these offers if it determines it’s unlikely to ever collect the full balance. It looks closely at your ability to pay, income, expenses and asset equity. It is a rigorous process with a lot of paperwork, and approval depends heavily on ensuring the forms are painstakingly accurate.

When to Consider Getting Professional Help

You are entirely allowed to negotiate with the IRS on your own, and many people do. But if the paperwork feels overwhelming, or if you’re worried about making a mistake that could jeopardize your assets, it might be worth bringing in some help.

Tax resolution specialists exist specifically to navigate these situations. If you look into firms like TaxRise, or local enrolled agents (EAs) and tax attorneys, their job is to handle the bureaucracy for you.

A good tax professional will look at your specific financial situation, figure out which IRS program fits your life and take over the communication. They understand the formulas used for an Offer in Compromise and know how to structure installment agreements so you can still comfortably afford your day-to-day life.

Retirement should be about enjoying the time you’ve earned, not stressing over tax notices.

If you’re facing a bill you can’t pay, take a breath, keep your retirement funds where they belong and look into your options – or get a professional to help you sort it out. There is always a path forward.

Firefighters Demand Action: Dolton Village Erupts Over Safety Concerns & Leadership Controversy

Firefighters in Dolton, Illinois, took to the streets on Monday, raising alarms about safety concerns in the south suburbs.

The primary issue they highlighted was regarding the eligibility of the interim fire chief, among other pressing matters.

Dolton firefighters, represented by their union, organized an informational picket to shed light on what they claim are serious safety and liability concerns that could endanger the local community.

Their primary worry is the appointment of interim Fire Chief Quention Curtis, who was selected by Dolton Mayor Jason House last October. The firefighters argue that Curtis, who did not rise through the ranks within Dolton, lacks the necessary certification and qualifications to lead the department.

Additionally, they point out that Curtis, a retired Chicago firefighter and founder of the Black Fire Brigade, has exceeded the 180-day limit set by the state for interim positions.

Dolton residents expressed their own concerns about Curtis at Monday’s village board meeting, saying these issues could also put firefighters at risk.

“These firemen worked for us with no contract, without pay. They supported this village. So, is this the kind of support we want to show them?” said Dolton resident Mary Avent.

Union representatives also say some of their apparatus is not working, and that there is not enough equipment for firefighters on duty. For instance, they say instead of eight working air packs, they are down to five, and there is one working engine.

“When you call 911, you trust the person in charge is trained, qualified and ready to made an informed decision under pressure. It not only a risk; it’s a liability,” said Dolton Firefighter Ed Knoblock.

A spokesperson for the village says this protest is not about safety; it is about the fact that overtime has been reduced by more than $30,000.

“This town is safe. That was a ruse. It’s irresponsible to put out, this town is unsafe, and talking about a certification that everybody admitted they don’t care about,” House said.

The village says Curtis is highly qualified and has worked to increase diversity in the department. Curtis says there is an effort to tarnish his reputation for trying to make the department run efficiently.

“These medals ain’t here for nothing. They’re not a showpiece. I actually did the work. I’m not new to this. I’m true to this,” Curtis said.

A lawsuit brought by the Dolton Professional Firefighters Association challenges the appointment of the interim fire chief. The village council says they will defend his appointment in court.
