Actor Johnny Depp has resumed testifying in his defamation trial against Amber Heard in a Fairfax, Virginia court. On his fourth day on the stand, Depp was cross-examined by Heard’s attorney, Ben Rottenborn. He was asked about audio recordings of arguments with Heard and whether she was the only person who had a problem with his alcohol abuse.

“Sir, if anyone had a problem with my drinking, at any time in my life, it was me,” Depp replied. “The only person I’ve abused in my life is myself.”

Depp remains on the stand for redirect examination from his attorney, Jessica Meyers. Depp is suing Heard, his ex-wife, for $50 million over a 2018 op-ed she wrote for The Washington Post in which she described herself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse.” Though Depp was not named in the article, he claims it cost him lucrative acting work. Both Heard and Depp, who met in 2009 and were married from 2015-to 2016, accuse each other of acts of physical violence during their relationship. They have both denied the other’s claims.

The former couple settled their divorce in August 2016, releasing a joint statement that read in part, “Our relationship was intensely passionate and at times volatile, but always bound by love.”The trial, which started on April 11, is set to last six weeks. Heard has not yet testified. Under redirect from his attorney on Monday, Depp explained that some of the texts introduced as evidence by Heard’s attorney were meant to be “irreverent” or based on Monty Python movies. Depp said he often handles a “difficult or unpleasant situation” with humor.

In an effort to de-escalate disagreements with Heard, Depp testified he would try to leave the room or leave their house.”No one deserves to live like that,” Depp said, describing their relationship near its end as “horrific.”

Why is Mr. Depp suing Ms. Heard?

Mr. Depp’s lawsuit, filed in 2019, revolves around a 2018 op-ed written by Ms. Heard titled, “I spoke up against sexual violence — and faced our culture’s wrath. That has to change.”

The op-ed does not mention Mr. Depp by name, but in it, Ms. Heard wrote that two years before the article’s publication, she became a “public figure representing domestic abuse.”

In 2016, Ms. Heard was granted a temporary restraining order after showing up to a California court with a bruised face, writing in an application for the order that Mr. Depp had thrown a phone at her face at close range. (The actor denies this.)

In the application, Ms. Heard wrote that Mr. Depp had been verbally and physically abusive to her throughout their relationship, detailing a recent incident in which she said he grabbed her by the hair and violently shoved her to the ground. (Mr. Depp wrote in court papers that this was a lie and that she was the one who punched him in the face that night.)

Mr. Depp’s lawsuit asserted that Ms. Heard’s abuse allegations were an “elaborate hoax” that cost the actor his career and reputation.

“Mr. Depp brings this defamation action to clear his name,” the actor’s lawsuit said.

Mr. Depp testified that Ms. Heard was angry about a meeting she had with a lawyer about a potential postnuptial agreement and threw a handle of vodka, which shattered onto his hand, seriously injuring his middle finger.

At the start of the cross-examination of Mr. Depp on Thursday, Mr. Rottenborn confronted him with text messages he sent to others in which he called Ms. Heard obscenities, including calling her a “worthless hooker.”
