Halle Berry has followed the keto diet for 30 years, and she told Insider it helped her manage her diabetes.
Berry, now 54, was found to have diabetes at the age of 22, which she says kicked off her health journey.
“It was a moment I’ll never forget,” she told Insider. “I had to respin the way I lived my life and have carried that with me ever since.”
For Berry, that means following the high-fat, low-carb keto diet.
“Because I’m diabetic, nutrition has been a big part of my life,” she said. “For the past almost 30 years I have been following the ketogenic lifestyle.”

In 2018, Berry wrote on Instagram that she believed the keto diet had been “largely responsible for slowing down my aging process” and helped her lose weight after childbirth.
“If you’re like me, you can possibly reverse type 2 diabetes, you’ll experience better physical endurance, better skin and also less acne if that’s an issue. And it even helps control migraines!” she said.
In 2019, the actor’s personal trainer shared the actor’s daily diet and favorite dishes, including bulletproof coffee (coffee with butter or coconut oil), steak or chicken with greens, and avocado ice cream.
Having been keto for so long, Berry told Women’s Health she didn’t crave sweets any more and felt “incredible” on the diet.

Berry’s diabetes diagnosis was the inspiration behind her health and wellness platform Re-Spin. “Re-Spin is very much about rethinking everything you thought you knew and daring to break down barriers and come up with what your life should be for yourself, regardless of what others think, and living that proudly and authentically,” she told Insider.
There has been confusion over the years about whether Berry’s diabetes is type 1 or type 2, as Healthline reported, but some of her comments — such as that she “reversed” type 1 diabetes by changing her diet — have been heavily criticized by medical professionals.
While Berry’s comments on diabetes and keto have drawn some criticism in the past, there is some research to suggest the diet can provide benefits for people with the condition.
A small 2005 study, for example, found that a keto diet could lead to improved glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes.
More-recent research, however, such as a 2019 report by the Diabetes Research Institute in Milan, concluded that low-carb diets such as keto might not be right for all people with diabetes, particularly those with type 1, and researchers have noted that the difficulty sustaining such diets is also an issue.

As a Black woman I was very proud, of course, to see Kamala Harris become vice president. When I tell my daughter there was a time when I never thought I would see that, she’s like, “What? What do you mean? We’ve always had Barack Obama.” I say, “No, you’ve always had Barack Obama.”
The Bruised director went on to talk about her relationship with musician, Van Hunt in the interview. She told the magazine that her son Maceo definitely approves of the relationship as he performed his own little commitment ceremony for the pair.
“My son, Maceo, of his own volition did this little commitment ceremony for us in the back seat of the car. I think he finally sees me happy, and it’s infectious. It was his way of saying, This is good. I like this. This makes me happy.”
She continued saying that, “It was a very real moment for all of us. I teared up, Van was fighting back tears. Even Maceo knew he’d said something poignant. It meant a lot to us. I have two children with two different fathers. Van has a son. As a mom living this modern, blended family, all I care about is that my kids are OK with the decisions I’m making.”
Berry also shared in her exclusive that her relationship with Van Hunt started differently than any other in her past.
“I have this new amazing love in my life [musician Van Hunt]. Because of COVID, we spent four months talking on the phone. We were forced to only let our brains connect and discover if we had a connection before our bodies decided to get involved. I’d never done it this way,” she said. “We talked for hours and hours and hours and hours and never got tired. I fell in love with his mind, his conversation. I realized: I really like him. I really liked who he was, and I can’t say I felt that way before. I really believe I’ve found my person. I fell in love with him before I even met him.”

So while no other Black woman stands next to me [with a best actress Oscar] and it’s heartbreaking and I wish there were more, I also know that moment at the Oscars was inspiring and made people believe that anything was possible. Today you’ve got Ava DuVernay, Lena Waithe, Viola Davis. I can go on and on. Women of color are doing things, and you know what? They’re doing things on their own terms, in their way. They’re daring to say, “I deserve this.”
