Top 5 Dietitian-Approved Snacks for Effective Weight Loss!

0

Kick the habit of mindless munching by adding these five dietitian-endorsed snacks to your shopping list today.

With spring just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to focus on getting fit. If you’re planning to start a diet, setting yourself up for success begins with a well-thought-out grocery list. Stocking up on the right snacks can significantly impact your progress—especially since late-night cravings can sabotage your calorie goals if you’re not prepared.

To guide you in choosing the best snacks, we consulted Dr. Kezia Joy, RDN, a Medical Advisor at Welzo. Dr. Joy shared her top five snack recommendations that are not only healthy but also conducive to weight loss.

Dr. Joy’s top snack choices for shedding pounds include cottage cheese paired with vegetables, Greek yogurt topped with fresh berries, hummus served with raw veggies, a serving of nuts accompanied by a piece of fruit, and smoothies made with whole food ingredients and protein.

The 5 Snacks a Dietitian Recommends for Weight Loss

According to Dr. Joy, her five most commonly suggested snacks for weight loss include cottage cheese with vegetables, Greek yogurt with fresh berries, hummus with raw vegetables, an ounce of or a few nuts with a piece of fruit, and a smoothie using whole food ingredients and protein.

Three Key Components That Support Weight Loss

Three essential components that support weight loss are protein, healthy fats, and fiber, with protein serving as the foundation of a weight-loss-approved snack.

“Each [of these options] allows for quick preparation, can be easily incorporated into your daily routine, and will allow you to have a variety of options as you work on losing weight, and help keep you from feeling like you’re being deprived by eating a “snack,’” Dr. Joy explains. “When you eat snacks that are good for you and allow you to meet your nutritional needs, but also limit the amount of calories you consume, you are more likely to continue to make good choices over time.”

How These Snacks Support Satiety and Prevent Overeating

These healthy snack options are chock-full of fiber and protein—both of which promote satiety and take longer to digest compared to other snacks. By decreasing the desire to over-eat during your next meal, you’re establishing more balanced eating habits.

“These types of snack food can assist with maintaining consistent blood glucose levels, and consistent blood glucose levels are very important to regulate your hunger. The less your blood glucose levels fluctuate, the less you will experience hunger,” Dr. Joy adds. “If you are able to control your hunger with snack foods prior to consuming highly processed convenience foods, it may help to limit the amount of highly processed convenience foods you consume during the day.”

Why Many Snacks Derail Weight-Loss Goals

Many snacks are packed with refined carbs and added sugar while adding zero nutritional value to your diet.

As Dr. Joy puts it, “They’re easily digested, but do little to suppress our desire for additional food.” This makes it easy to overeat these snack foods throughout the day, leading to excess calorie consumption.

“Another reason why the snacks I recommend are better than typical snacks is that they have a larger volume of nutrients per serving than typical snacks,” Dr. Joy tells us. “Most snack foods are designed so that we can eat too much of them with very little nutritional value. Therefore, when you choose to eat one of the snacks I recommend, the calories will provide satiety, or fullness.”

Why Snack Timing Matters

Snack timing matters more than you’d think.

“Snacks at appropriate times may prevent an interval of time from one meal to another in which individuals are likely to consume excess calories due to a large gap in time since the last meal. Snacking maintains consistent levels of energy throughout the day,” Dr. Joy says. “A mid-afternoon snack will also help control energy crashes and reduce the likelihood that you’ll feel the need for sweet treats. A balanced snack supports your ability to focus and be productive. Evening snacking should be purposeful (not routine) and based on your body’s need for food as opposed to just eating out of habit. Protein-based snacks are usually the best choice.”

Left-Leaning Justices Channel Scalia in Birthright Citizenship Debate

0

During Wednesday’s episode of “Ingraham Angle” on the Fox News Channel, Jonathan Turley, a Fox News Contributor and a law professor at George Washington University, shared his insights on the Supreme Court’s deliberation over a birthright citizenship case. Turley remarked that it was quite amusing to hear the liberal justices, who typically don’t let the Constitution’s wording interfere with their interpretations, adopting an approach reminiscent of the late Justice Antonin Scalia in their constitutional reading.

Turley elaborated, stating, “These justices are navigating over a century of legal precedent. What’s particularly amusing, Laura, and I’m sure you noticed too, was observing the liberal justices, who typically set aside strict constitutional language for their interpretations, seemingly channel Justice Scalia. They emphasized the importance of adhering to original intent, pointing out that this aligns with the English rule, which resonated with the conservative justices.”

He further noted that conservatives generally prefer to stick to established precedent and avoid overanalyzing the language, which in this instance, is working to the advantage of the left.

Wayne Bennett’s Stern Warning: The Unchangeable Rule in State of Origin Amidst New Eligibility Overhaul

0

Wayne Bennett has thrown his support behind the recent changes to the State of Origin selection rules, while cautioning Australian rugby league officials to preserve the essential eligibility standards for players representing New South Wales or Queensland, especially if they weren’t born in those states.

In the past, State of Origin coaches were limited to picking players who adhered to strict eligibility criteria and opted to represent either Australia or a tier-two nation. To qualify, players needed to be born in the state they hoped to represent, have resided there before turning 13, or have a parent who played State of Origin.

These rules previously disqualified players born in New South Wales or Queensland from participating if they chose to represent England or New Zealand in international play.

With the updated guidelines, players can now compete for NSW or Queensland irrespective of their nationality, provided they meet the fundamental eligibility requirements.

The South Sydney Rabbitohs coach expressed his approval of the adjustments but emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity of the State of Origin series.

‘They’ve got to preserve the Origin, they’ve got to preserve what state versus state means,’ Bennett said to The Courier Mail.

‘If they don’t preserve that, then they will lose the fans with Origin. Fans need to know it’s a genuine rivalry between two states.

‘You can’t come here at 20 years of age and play Origin. That will destroy it. They can’t touch that rule. It doesn’t become authentic.’

The rule changes are an exciting development for rugby league and have removed a big obstacle for multiple players who had previously been ineligible to play in the three-match series or were considering defecting to play international footy for a tier one nation.

Players like Addin Fonua-Blake, who was born in Sydney but elected to play for both Tonga and New Zealand at the international level, can also now represent New South Wales.

Newcastle star Kalyn Ponga has previously spoken of his desire to play for New Zealand, sparking concerns among Maroons fans that he would therefore no longer be able to play in State of Origin. However, the new rules will benefit the Mount Isa-born fullback, who can now play for the Kiwis without giving up his Queensland jersey.

‘Moving from that point to the internationals. I’m a fan of what they’re doing with that stuff because they’re only going to make the international games stronger,’ the former Queensland coach added.

‘We’ve seen what’s happened in the last five years with regards to Tonga and Samoa and PNG. I’m amazed at times that people want to make a fuss over nothing.

‘People don’t understand, that’s all. They’ve had the tier two players that can have the option if they don’t play for Australia, they can go back and play for Tonga and Samoa.

‘If you’re a New Zealander or an Englishman, you can’t do that.’

Roosters star Victor Radley is another player who was unable to qualify to play for New South Wales, because of his allegiances to England.

Radley elected to play for England, his father’s home, ahead of the 2022 Rugby League World Cup.

‘I’ve always felt for Victor Radley – he’s a wonderful player and he’s been here all his life,’ the veteran coach added.

‘Why can’t he play for New South Wales? That only enhances the game as well if you can get the best players playing.

‘And then if he wants to go and play for England as he does, well that’s great, I’m happy for him.’

However, the rule changes raised concerns among former Australia coach Mal Meninga.

He told the outlet: ‘I worry about the future of Origin. I worry about Origin in terms of where the Queensland kids and Indigenous kids go.

‘Are they going to get beaten up by the Islanders?

‘That’s my only issue with it.’

As a player, Meninga played 32 times for the Maroons between 1979 and 1994. He’d later go on to coach the side in 30 matches between 2006 and 2015.

‘I hope this doesn’t stand in the way of guys of genuine Queensland heritage playing State of Origin,’ he added.

Respected Firefighters Face Charges in Disturbing Child Abuse Case Involving Single Victim

0

In a troubling development out of the North Dallas suburbs, three firefighters have been arrested on multiple charges related to child sex abuse, all involving the same juvenile victim. These arrests were made on Thursday, as detailed in court documents.

Remarkably, the arrests came on the heels of public recognition for two of the suspects, who had recently been celebrated for their contributions to the community.

The individuals in question, affiliated with the Howe Fire Department in Grayson County, have been identified as David Yosimar Perez-Glass, Dalton Joe McCaslin, and Joshua Todd Ryals. They each face serious felony charges, including sexual assault of a child and indecency with a child involving sexual contact.

Investigations allege that the three men targeted a 16-year-old junior firefighter who joined the department as a volunteer in January 2022. This disturbing case has sent shockwaves throughout the local community.

Adding to the gravity of the situation, it was noted that the Howe Fire Department had previously bestowed its Firefighter of the Year award upon Perez-Glass in 2022, highlighting a stark contrast between his public accolades and the serious allegations now facing him.

Perez-Glass allegedly began harassing the girl within her first month at the department with behavior that quickly escalated during times they were alone at the station.

“Perez’s behavior scared her, and it eventually led to him hugging, grabbing her, and throwing her onto the sofa,” documents state.

The victim said despite her saying she was a virgin and “did not like what he was doing to her,” Perez-Glass allegedly assaulted her more than 20 times orally and had intercourse with her less than 10 times over the course of a year.

He also repeatedly threatened to rape her, kill her and “do things to her parents” if she ever reported their interactions, the documents said.

The alleged assaults reportedly ended when the victim turned the “legal age” of 17 and Perez-Glass no longer wanted to engage in a relationship.

During the year the alleged abuse occurred, Perez-Glass was reportedly named Firefighter of the Year by the Howe Fire Department and promoted to lieutenant.

Court documents also noted that McCaslin had a “consensual” sexual relationship with the girl beginning in December 2022.

During that period, the victim reportedly visited an apartment McCaslin shared with another firefighter in Van Alstyne.

The complaint alleged a private interaction occurred between McCaslin and the girl while the other roommate was asleep.

Joshua Ryals mugshot

Separately, Ryals allegedly admitted to inappropriate contact with the victim while alone at the Howe Fire Station, court documents said.

The Melissa Fire Department said Ryals resigned the week before his arrest, when he was honored as Paramedic of the Year by the department March 16, Fox 4 News said.

Texas Rangers officers arrested the three suspects after an investigation.

Perez-Glass and McCaslin both face three counts of sexual assault of a child, while Ryals was charged with two counts of indecency with a child involving sexual contact.

All three were booked into the Grayson County Jail.

Heartbroken Parents Share Tragic Story of Baby’s Daylight Shooting

0

The devastated parents of a seven-month-old girl, who was tragically shot in broad daylight in New York City, have shared their grief over the unimaginable loss of their daughter.

Kaori, who had only recently begun uttering her first words, was lovingly secured in her stroller next to her brother on a seemingly ordinary Wednesday. That tranquility was shattered by the sound of gunfire echoing through the streets of Brooklyn.

“At first, we thought it was fireworks,” recalled a heartbroken Lianna Charles-Moore, Kaori’s mother, in an interview with the New York Post.

In the chaos that followed, Lianna’s young son instinctively leaped from the stroller, prompting her to scoop him up in a protective embrace.

The 20-year-old mother described the heart-wrenching moment she turned to her left, only to discover her daughter lying still and silent. The scene that unfolded left an indelible mark on their lives, as they grapple with the loss of their precious Kaori.

‘She was shot in the head. She was just bleeding. It was just too much,’ she recalled through tears.

Charles-Moore told the outlet that Kaori’s brother was grazed by the bullet on his back, and he has been asking for his sister ever since the fateful shooting.

‘My daughter was innocent. She didn’t deserve that. We were just going outside to go get her a few things, and my son a few things,’ the grieving mother continued.

‘My son got impacted with everything that happened, so it was just too much, because they could have killed my son and my daughter.’

Charles-Moore said Kaori had just passed the milestone of saying ‘mama,’ and had also began to crawl, the Post reported.

The infant’s grandmother, Linda Moore Oyinkoinyan, said she collapsed at the news while at her job as a school teacher.

‘I was supposed to get them today or tomorrow. I’m a teacher, so I have off, and I was going to take them,’ she said.

‘My daughter called me at my job. She was screaming. I had to hang up on her. She was scaring me. She said, “They shot Kaori in the head.” She was screaming. She was frantic. I just passed out in the class,’ she recalled, as her grandson took her hand, the outlet reported.

The heartbroken grandmother remembered Kaori as a ‘beautiful spirit,’ who was always smiling.

‘She was loving. She was caring. Always smiling. She was very smart. The baby was very beautiful. She brought a lot of people together,’ Oyinkoinyan recalled.

‘It’s heartbreaking.’

Intoxicated Driver Causes Fatal Highway Crash, Killing Two

Inset: Fred Donaldson (Sarasota County Jail). Background: The vehicle Donaldson drove off the road in Sarasota County, Florida (WFLA).

An Ohio resident is facing a 20-year prison term after driving under the influence with a blood alcohol concentration that was twice the legal limit, leading to a fatal accident on a Florida highway. The incident resulted in the deaths of a couple whose vehicle collided with a tree.

Fred Donaldson, aged 48, entered a plea of no contest to two charges of DUI manslaughter in connection with the tragic deaths of David Henson, 69, and his wife Katherine Henson, 64. On Tuesday, a judge handed down a two-decade prison sentence for Donaldson’s actions.

According to a probable cause arrest affidavit, Donaldson was speeding down Interstate 75 in Sarasota County shortly before 4 p.m. Dec. 14, weaving in and out of traffic. A video obtained by local NBC affiliate WFLA shows the driver”s side of his vehicle slam into the Hensons’ passenger-side vehicle. The collision sends the Hensons off the highway before they crash into a tree.

Emergency responders found the couple deceased at the crash site.

Donaldson remained at the scene, and authorities noted a strong odor of alcohol. His blood alcohol content was measured at 0.18, significantly exceeding the legal driving limit of 0.08.

At the crash site, Donaldson appeared to acknowledge his role in the accident and inquired about the couple’s well-being.

Troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol asked if he would complete field sobriety tests.

“I can probably do the test,” Donaldson responded. “But it doesn’t mean I’m right.”

Donaldson said he wanted to stop the test after troopers asked him to do the “walk and turn” exercise.

“I f—ed up, I don’t think I need to offer anything,” he said. “No matter how drunk I am, I f—ed up.”

Troopers arrested Donaldson on suspicion of DUI.

According to a victim impact statement, Katherine Henson was a nurse and her husband was a restaurateur. They were married for nearly 40 years.

“Kathy and Dave lived their lives with a simple but powerful philosophy: Family first,” the statement said. “It was not just something they said — it was something they did, every single day. They helped with repairs at their aging parents’ homes. They drove across the country to help a nephew move. They showed up without being asked, and they stayed as long as they were needed.”

The couple lived in Pensacola and had just returned from a cruise before the fatal crash.

“The driver who made the choice to get behind the wheel that day did not just take two lives,” the statement said. “He shattered a family. He robbed children of their parents, grandparents of their daughter, a grandbaby of grandparents they will never meet, and a community of two people who made it genuinely better.”

Tragic Loss: ‘Blue Bloods’ Actor Alex Duong Passes at 42 After Rare Cancer Linked to Eye Symptom

0

Alex Duong, known for his captivating performances in “Blue Bloods,” has tragically passed away at the age of 42 following a courageous fight against alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive type of soft tissue cancer. Duong’s journey with the illness began with what appeared to be a minor headache, but quickly escalated into a severe eye swelling that resulted in vision loss and an unexpected diagnosis. His story serves as a stark reminder of how swiftly such cancers can manifest in adults, emphasizing the importance of early detection and awareness of subtle warning signs.

Blue Bloods Star Alex Duong Dies at 42: Eye Symptom Sparks Rare Cancer

What Is Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma?

Alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma (ARMS) is a cancer that develops in soft tissues, imitating immature muscle cells that have become malignant. This particular subtype is characterized by small, round cells that resemble lung alveoli, which is how it derives its name. While it predominantly affects children under the age of 10—accounting for approximately 25% of all cases—adults like Duong face significantly poorer prognoses due to the cancer’s rapid progression.

This type of cancer often includes genetic abnormalities, such as the fusion of PAX3-FOXO1 genes, which contribute to its aggressive nature. In the United States, rhabdomyosarcoma affects about 350 children each year, yet occurrences in adults remain rare, posing challenges for both research and treatment strategies.

Alex Duong’s Cancer Journey

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times in April 2025, Duong shared how his headaches worsened until his manager noticed unusual eye bulging and discoloration. Medical tests confirmed that ARMS was exerting pressure on his optic nerve, obstructing blood flow and leading to the loss of sight in one eye. Tragically, by March 2026, Duong succumbed to septic shock in a Santa Monica hospital, with his wife, Christina, and their five-year-old daughter, Everest, by his side.

In response to his battle, a GoFundMe campaign launched in February 2025 garnered widespread support for his treatments, reflecting the community’s shared heartbreak. Duong’s roles in productions such as “Blue Bloods,” “Roast Battle,” and “Tugged” showcased his remarkable talent and left a lasting impression on fans who now mourn the loss of a vibrant and gifted performer.

This image captures Duong’s on-screen energy, a reminder of the man behind the headlines.

Key Symptoms of Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma

That eye bulge changed everything for Duong; similar signs demand attention. Common red flags vary by site but often start subtle:

  • Bulging or crossed eyes, headaches from head/neck growths.

  • Lumps, pain, or swelling in limbs, abdomen, or pelvis.

  • Blood in urine, bowel issues, or unexplained bleeding.

In adults, symptoms mimic infections, delaying diagnosis. Stats show 40% of soft tissue sarcomas present late, worsening prognosis. One parent shared online how their child’s “stomachache” hid ARMS for months, echoing Duong’s overlooked headaches.

Treatment Options for Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma

Multi-agent chemotherapy kicks off care, targeting this beast systemically. Radiation follows for local control if surgery can’t fully excise the tumor, as in Duong’s orbital case.

Surgery aims for clear margins, sometimes pre- or post-chemo. Survival hovers at 50-60% for kids with localized ARMS, dropping below 30% in adults or metastatic stages. Emerging trials test targeted therapies against those gene fusions, offering hope beyond standard regimens.

What to Do If You Notice ARMS Symptoms?

Spot bulging eyes or persistent lumps? See a doctor promptly; imaging like MRI pins it down fast. Biopsy confirms, as Duong’s swift tests did post-swelling.

Push for sarcoma specialists at centers like Penn Medicine, where multidisciplinary teams boost outcomes. Track family history too, rare as genetic links are. Early action turned a teen’s leg lump into full remission, proving vigilance saves lives. Share symptoms with loved ones; awareness honors stories like Duong’s.

Unforgettable Fashion Fails: Judge Jeanine Pirro’s Most Controversial Outfits

Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, is widely recognized for her unyielding and assertive demeanor. Her fiery exchange with Whoopi Goldberg on live TV and her candid critique of Fox News personality Sean Hannity as an “egomaniac” are just a few instances that highlight her outspoken nature. However, Pirro is also celebrated as a right-wing fashion icon, frequently engaging with her followers on social media by sharing her outfit details and occasionally seeking their opinion on her attire choices. It’s worth noting that her style rarely aligns with Democratic blue hues.

In a 2010 article titled “A Deal? Tell It to the Judge,” a New York Times reporter chronicled Pirro’s shopping habits as she navigated through the racks at the now-closed discount retailer, Filene’s Basement. Despite her luxurious lifestyle, Pirro is surprisingly frugal about fashion. She questioned the rationale behind spending $1,600 on Dolce & Gabbana rhinestone jeans, proclaiming, “I could do that myself. I know how to use a stud gun.”

Interestingly, some of Pirro’s bold fashion choices have stirred controversy, challenging the conservative image she has carefully cultivated over her political career.

In December 2015, Pirro revisited the past by posting a photo from 15 years earlier on Facebook, showcasing a particularly daring evening gown. The strapless dress, leaving little to the imagination, was worn for a hospital fundraising event. The post quickly attracted attention, with one commenter humorously stating, “If I would get her for a Judge I would go commit a crime,” while another jested, “My Hospital needs a Fundraiser.”

However, not all feedback was flattering. A critic remarked, “You diminish the veracity of your message by being a ‘fashionista.’ Important men don’t do this and I consider you and your message important. I don’t care about your shoes or dress and I am a woman. I care more so about your ability to affect our nation.”

Jeanine Pirro has a history of wearing dangerously low necklines

Pics or it didn’t happen? In December 2015, Jeanine Pirro took a trip down memory lane when she posted an old photo of herself from 15 years prior, wearing what proved to be a particularly busty evening gown. Suffice to say, the strapless dress left very little to the imagination. “I was off to a fundraising event for a hospital,” Pirro wrote on Facebook.

As one can imagine, shortly after Pirro hit post, people came crawling out of the woodwork to comment on her, uh, assets. “If I would get her for a Judge I would go commit a crime,” one user joked. Meanwhile, another quipped, “My Hospital needs a Fundraiser.” Unfortunately, however, one Facebook user wasn’t nearly as complimentary. “You diminish the veracity of your message by being a ‘fashionista.’ Important men don’t do this and I consider you and your message important,” they wrote. “I don’t care about your shoes or dress and I am a woman. I care more so about your ability to affect our nation.”

Was Jeanine Pirro headed to a Fox News show appearance or Las Vegas club?

In July 2016, long before Jeanine Pirro referred to Sean Hannity as an egotistical maniac, she posted a photo of herself heading to the set of the host’s Fox News show wearing an ultra-tight yellow bandage dress that screamed Las Vegas club rat circa 2006. “Always working!! Be sure to tune into Sean Hannity tonight!” she posted on Facebook along with a picture of herself in a car. Perhaps this is what all of those Cosmopolitan issues were getting at when they wrote about taking a look from day to night? Did Pirro have plans to hit the town after “Hannity”? The world may never know.

What we do know, however, is that many of her followers were downright appalled by her outfit of choice for the news appearance, and they weren’t afraid to let her know it. “You are intelligent, classy, & spot on with your opinions, but your choice of dress is inappropriate,” one Facebook user said. Meanwhile, another wrote, “I like you Judge Jeanine Pirro but cleavage is NEVER appropriate in the workplace. Your girls are on full display in this photo.”

Jeanine Pirro’s Halloween get up was a nightmare

On October 31, 2025, newly-minted United States Attorney Jeanine Pirro cemented her place on the list of worst-dressed MAGA stars at 2025 Mar-a-Lago parties when she turned up at a “The Great Gatsby”-themed party at the private club wearing a nearly see-through flapper-style dress with a sparkling, black and emerald green sheer overlay, complete with long black gloves and a feathered flapper hat. “Opening night at Mar a Lago with the Greatest President,” Pirro posted on Instagram along with three photos of herself enjoying the Halloween bash with President Donald Trump and others. Alas, aside from Pirro’s scantily clad Gatsby get-up, the party itself proved to be the antithesis of conservative. As reported by the Daily Mail, partygoers sipped on champagne all while watching a burlesque dancer pose in a larger-than-life martini glass.

Later, many took to the comments section to let their thoughts be known. “Pagans celebrating while wrapping themselves in Christianity as the people suffer. Awaiting the writing on the wall,” one Instagram user wrote. Meanwhile, another quipped, “What a joke.” Pirro, however, paid the criticism no mind. In December, she doubled down on the sheer evening gown and rewore it at the 48th Annual Kennedy Center Honors. Told you she was frugal!

Jeanine Pirro let it all hang out at a Mar-a-Lago holiday party

Jeanine Pirro let it all hang out over the 2025 holiday season. On December 31, 2025, the United States attorney took to Instagram to share a series of posts featuring photos of herself enjoying the holiday season with family and friends at — you guessed it — Mar-a-Lago. Alas, it was her party attire that really got people talking. Outfitted in a black tea-length gown, complete with a dangerously low embellished scoop neck, Pirro was the busty belle of the ball. Alexa, play “The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)” by Nat King Cole.

As one can imagine, the comments section was filled with users giving their own two cents on Pirro’s party ‘fit. “Do taxpayers foot the bill for all your fillers and surgeries, like we do on your jets?” one Instagram user pointedly asked her. Meanwhile, another wrote, “She looks like she just headed to her HS prom.”

Prime Minister Unveils $1 Billion Recovery Plan Amid Criticism of National Address: A Promising Path Forward

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese used his National Press Club speech to fill in some of the gaps left from his rare yet inconsequential address to the nation, including details of a $1 billion plan to help fuel-impacted businesses.
The PM outlined the government’s economic agenda as Australians battle spiralling costs triggered by the war on Iran and offered reassurances that there is a plan if the conflict rages on for longer than expected.
His speech was also peppered with key updates on the federal government’s sweeping gambling reform and a small preview of the May federal budget.

In a significant move, the Prime Minister unveiled a $1 billion initiative designed to provide interest-free loans to truck drivers, freight companies, and producers of fuel and fertilizer. This support targets those hardest hit by the soaring costs of petrol and diesel.

The funding is sourced from the off-budget National Reconstruction Fund and is intended to serve as a “shock absorber” to alleviate some of the financial strain on these essential businesses.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese emphasized the critical role these sectors play, stating, “These firms are not just impacted by this crisis; they are crucial to Australia’s ability to navigate it successfully.”

He continued, “Our government is committed to extending credit to assist them, along with the farmers and producers who depend on these supply chains, in withstanding the challenges ahead.”

Albanese acknowledged the broader global implications of the crisis, noting, “No government can promise to fully eliminate the pressures this global situation will bring.”

“But we can be a buffer against the worst of it.”

PM defends lacklustre national address

Albanese had been widely expected to offer more details during yesterday’s national address, a televised message usually reserved for wart-time presidents or major announcements.

The PM defended his remarks and said it was a device to “talk directly to the nation” rather than deliver any specific news.

“I took the opportunity to talk directly to the nation, that is more important than ever, because of the nature of the noise that is out there… the conspiracy theories out there,” Albanese said.

He added that the spike in fuel demand had necessitated his call for calm.

Fuel excise savings to reach 32c per litre

The federal government has reached an agreement with the states and territories to negotiate an increased reduction of the fuel excise.

Combined with the extra cuts, the PM said drivers will now save a total of 32 cents per litre at the pump.

The change was signed into law by Treasurer Jim Chalmers today.

Albanese said he hoped this would immediately impact prices for Australian motorists.

“We want this added relief to start showing up at our petrol stations straight away,” he said.

A preview of May’s federal budget

The PM also offered a brief preview into next month’s federal budget.

The ever-present issue of the cost of living will remain at the top of the agenda, Albanese said.

He flagged it will be his government’s “most important” budget since he came into power in 2022.

“One priority remains helping people with the cost of living. And that is the balance that we will strike next month’s budget,” the PM said.

“It is our government’s most important budget to date and ambitious.

‘We will get through this’

There is a contingency plan in place if the war “deteriorates” our economy further, Albanese said.

He assured Australians that the nation will “get through this” but could not offer any timeline for when the war may end.

“We don’t know how long this will go for, we don’t know when it will end and therefore the consequences of this are connected with that,” Albanese said.

“We’ll come through this. And my job is to provide appropriate reassurance which is what we’re doing,” he said.

Albanese also tempered fears over any COVID-style mandates or lockdowns.

“This will not be like COVID,” he added.

“Partly because the nature of this global crisis is very different.

“But also because we have learned from that time – and we are deliberately taking a different approach.”

Tristan Thompson: Unveiling the Truth About His US Citizenship Amid Trump Support Controversy

NBA veteran Tristan Thompson has voiced his support for President Donald Trump’s immigration policies, expressing admiration for the administration’s approach.

Originally from Canada, the Cleveland Cavaliers’ center, who gained U.S. citizenship in 2020, shared his thoughts during an interview on The Katie Miller Podcast. He highlighted that individuals who immigrate legally and “do the thing the right way” deserve precedence, yet he also recognized the importance of assessing immigration situations individually.

Is Tristan Thompson a US Citizen: Truth Behind Trump Support

Tristan Thompson’s Canadian Roots and NBA Journey to America

Thompson hails from Brampton, Ontario, located near Toronto. He first came to the United States as a teenager on a student visa, aiming to enhance his basketball skills. He attended high schools in both New Jersey and Nevada.

After spending one season playing for the University of Texas, he entered the NBA draft. The Cleveland Cavaliers made him the fourth overall pick in 2011. During his nine seasons with the Cavaliers, Thompson played a key role in securing the team’s first NBA championship in 2016, alongside LeBron James.

How Tristan Thompson Became a US Citizen in 2020 During Trump’s First Term

Thompson officially became a U.S. citizen in November 2020, shortly after signing a $19 million deal with the Boston Celtics. A memorable photo shows him taking the Oath of Allegiance during his naturalization ceremony, with his right hand raised.

The US Citizenship and Immigration Services shared the image, quoting Thompson as saying: “I came to the US on a student visa and have always had big dreams. I’m now truly living the American dream.” His citizenship came during the final months of Trump’s first presidential term.

Exact Quotes From the Katie Miller Podcast: “I Love What He’s Done”

In a preview of the podcast episode released in March 2026, Thompson did not hold back on his political views. “What President Trump is doing, first of all, I love what he’s done so far for our country,” he said.

“I think he’s helped our country a lot.” The full episode is scheduled to air Tuesday at 6 p.m. ET across major platforms, including YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and X.

Thompson grounded his immigration views in personal experience. “I’m a firm believer because I have family members and I have people that are immigrants,” he explained. “I believe for those that do the thing the right way and get the papers, I think they should be taken care of first and foremost.

I think that’s the right thing. I think that’s the right way of going about it.” The remarks position him alongside Trump’s emphasis on prioritizing legal immigration pathways.

Despite his support for prioritizing legal applicants, Thompson acknowledged the complexity of individual immigration situations. “I think it should be case by case on the right people,” he said, describing a more nuanced position.

“I understand where he’s coming from, but for me, it varies depending on who the person is.” He expressed empathy for people caught “in-between states” while waiting for their legal paperwork to be processed.

Quick Citizenship Process During the Pandemic: What Thompson Revealed

Thompson told Miller that his own naturalization process moved surprisingly quickly a detail he attributed to timing rather than special treatment. “I think it was just because of the pandemic, so they were just quick with it,” he explained.

He dismissed speculation that his NBA status might have accelerated the application, maintaining that the speed came from pandemic-related processing efficiencies rather than celebrity influence.

Tristan Thompson Denies NBA Status Helped His US Citizenship Application

The basketball star was unequivocal when asked whether his professional athlete profile gave him an advantage. He rejected the notion outright, insisting his application moved through standard channels.

While some public figures face scrutiny over expedited immigration processing, Thompson’s denial aims to frame his journey as one that followed the same legal pathways available to other permanent residents seeking naturalization.

Reaction to Thompson’s comments has been sharply divided. Former NBA player Matt Barnes criticized Thompson’s recent White House visit, commenting, “These n***** weirdos smh,” on social media.

WNBA champion Natasha Cloud called the visit “Cringe,” while actor Dondre Whitfield wrote, “No comment. Smh.” Thompson visited the James Brady Press Briefing Room to advocate for NIL protections for college athletes and posted a selfie with Vice President JD Vance.

Family Immigrant Ties: How Tristan Thompson’s Background Shapes His Views

Thompson has cited his family’s immigrant background as central to his perspective. Having relatives who navigated the immigration system gives him direct insight into the challenges applicants face, he explained.

This personal connection, combined with his own decade-long journey from student visa holder to naturalized citizen, appears to inform his belief that legal pathways should be prioritized while still allowing for case-by-case review of individual circumstances.

White House Visit Context: Thompson’s Recent Praise for Trump Policies

Thompson’s podcast remarks align with a broader pattern of political engagement. On March 26, 2026, he visited the White House to discuss financial protections for college athletes navigating Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals.

“With NIL there’s a lot of capital, there’s a lot of money. We need to create a system to protect them,” he said during a press briefing. He also previously commented on economic issues, linking corporate layoffs to lost confidence in the American workforce.

Why This Story Stands Out in the 2026 US Immigration Debate

Thompson’s public support for Trump’s immigration policies is notable given the NBA’s reputation as a league where progressive political views dominate. His stance places him among a minority of current and former NBA players aligning with conservative immigration enforcement positions.

As the 2026 immigration debate intensifies ahead of midterm elections, Thompson’s voice adds a celebrity dimension to conversations about legal versus undocumented immigration priorities.

The Trump administration has consistently emphasized that legal immigrants who follow established procedures should not face competition from those who entered without authorization.

Thompson’s personal story arriving on a student visa, playing college basketball, building an NBA career, and naturalizing through official channels—represents the kind of immigration journey the administration holds up as the preferred model.
