Sen. Ossoff Energizes 2024 Bid by Challenging Trump

0

ATLANTA (AP) — Back in 2014, Jon Ossoff emerged as a fresh-faced 30-year-old Democratic hopeful, eager to sway Georgia’s suburban voters with promises of slashing “wasteful spending” and ensuring “accountability to you” from both political aisles in Washington. His Republican opponents back then even noted that Ossoff “talks like a Republican.”

Fast forward to today, and there’s little chance anyone would make that comparison. After coming up short in the 2017 race and then clinching a U.S. Senate seat in a razor-tight 2021 runoff, Ossoff is making his stance unmistakably clear. His re-election campaign is punctuated by a fierce critique of former President Donald Trump, whom he brands as a “national disgrace” at the helm of a “Mar-a-Lago mafia,” describing it as possibly “the most corrupt administration of all time.”

Throughout his political journey, Ossoff has been perceived as a figurehead for opposing Trump, regardless of his specific campaign rhetoric. Now, however, he’s fully embracing that mantle, drawing significant attention from across the Democratic landscape. From grassroots activists eager for impactful narratives in the upcoming 2026 midterms to those considering promising presidential candidates for 2028, Ossoff is firmly on their radar.

In recent days, as Trump once again latched onto unfounded claims of voter fraud regarding the 2020 election that propelled Ossoff to the Senate, the senator seized each moment to lambast the “world’s most famous sore loser.”

“The senator is definitely having a moment, and these breakout moments can certainly become a launching pad for something bigger,” remarked Lis Smith, a renowned Democratic strategist known for elevating Pete Buttigieg from an obscure Indiana mayor to a notable presidential candidate in 2020. She emphasized that Ossoff’s strategy—linking Trump’s personal financial motives to his economic policies—provides a blueprint that “more Democrats should adopt.”

Ossoff insists he’s focused only on “providing Georgians with the best possible service, investigating and exposing corruption and abuse, and winning this pivotal Senate race” over Rep. Mike Collins, who won a Republican primary runoff after Trump’s last-minute endorsement.

Collins argues that Ossoff is just another “out-of-touch, far-left liberal,” and he has criticized him as “weak” and “woke.”

But Ossoff’s turn in the spotlight, coupled with prodigious fundraising, puts him in a stronger position for a second term than most political observers expected when Trump returned to the White House less than two years ago. And with Ossoff being the only Democratic senator facing reelection in a state Trump won in 2024, defending his seat is critical for Democrats as they try to gain at least four seats elsewhere to reclaim a Senate majority.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, who is also seeking reelection and is mentioned as a potential 2028 candidate, was in Georgia recently campaigning for Ossoff and Democratic nominee for governor Keisha Lance Bottoms.

He described them both as “fighters” and said Ossoff is making the right pitch for voters who “want someone that will disrupt the status quo and do what’s necessary to make their lives easier as the Trump administration raises prices on everything from gas to groceries.”

In 2017, Trump wasn’t Ossoff’s initial focus

Ossoff was a political unknown when he decided to run for Congress in 2017. It was the first special congressional election of Trump’s presidency, an open seat because Trump nominated Tom Price as health secretary thinking the district that once sent House Speaker Newt Gingrich to Washington was safe for Republicans.

The young Democrat had been a congressional aide and started a production company focused on investigative documentaries. But Ossoff became a fundraising sensation as rank-and-file Democrats looked for a way to counter Trump. He led an initial all-party primary, supercharging the national attention on a runoff campaign.

“The atmosphere of disarray and gridlock and dysfunction and chaos in Washington doesn’t serve the American people, and it’s not just this administration or this White House — it’s career politicians in Congress,” he said.

Ossoff lost to Karen Handel, a Republican who previously served as Georgia secretary of state.

In 2020, a careful candidate and senator emerged

Running against Republican Sen. David Perdue in 2020, Ossoff continued a disciplined, wonkish approach. Georgia was not considered to be a top battleground, and what early attention it got was focused more on Democrat Raphael Warnock, running in a special Senate election against Sen. Kelly Loeffler. She was considered more vulnerable than Perdue after being appointed to replace Johnny Isakson, who retired because of health issues.

The dynamics changed when Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden carried Georgia and both Georgia Senate contests went to runoffs — with control of the chamber hanging in the balance. Trump tried to overturn Biden’s victory and began his yearslong fixation with falsely claiming U.S. elections are rigged, with Georgia as his prime example.

Still, throughout his 2020 campaign, Ossoff kept his focus on Perdue’s personal business dealings and the Republican reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic. In one debate, Ossoff did not mention the president at all. In another, when asked about Trump, he answered broadly.

“That kind of leadership really only grows when there’s already been a destruction of faith in our political institutions,” he said.

In 2026, an aggressive stump speech goes viral

As a senator, Ossoff has built relationships and a constituent services operation that span Georgia. He regularly announces appropriations for infrastructure, hospitals and other programs — including in heavily Republican areas. He led a congressional investigation into problems in Georgia’s child services programs, and he’s focused heavily on veterans’ care.

But his 2026 breakout has been anchored by a stump speech built around a withering take down of the president. He mocks Trump’s social media blitzes on Truth Social and proposals to put his face on U.S. money.

“When he’s not posting, he’s been trying to rob us. Have you seen it?” Ossoff asks, shifting to allegations of corruption and incompetence.

He ticks through Trumps’ lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service, his idea for a restitution fund that could compensate Jan. 6 rioters and foreign business deals by his sons. “Prince Don and Prince Eric,” Ossoff calls them.

He blasts Trump’s tax cuts as tilted to the rich, his effort to shield the Jeffrey Epstein case files, and an Iran war that “no one voted for and no one can explain.”

“All this while you pay more for gas, for groceries, for healthcare,” he says.

Ossoff still nods to an overall “rot” in a “coin-operated” political system that goes beyond Trump. But the applause lines, which campaign aides cut and distribute across social media platforms in real time, are trained on Trump.

“He’s a failed president and a national disgrace,” Ossoff repeatedly says.

Election denial has been a backdrop for Ossoff’s political career

Ossoff won his Senate seat in the midst of Trump’s election denial in Georgia, and the president has revived the topic as he runs for reelection. Trump has directed his administration to investigate the 2020 election, and federal agents seized hundreds of boxes of ballots from Fulton County, a Democratic stronghold that includes Atlanta.

Refusing to acknowledge that Biden legitimately defeated Trump has become a litmus test for serving in the administration, one that Ossoff highlighted when questioning Jay Clayton, Trump’s nominee for national intelligence director.

“Who won the 2020 election?” Ossoff said.

“I’m not going to get into that with you,” Clayton responded.

As Clayton continued to dodge, Ossoff said, “isn’t it humiliating to be unable to answer this question, to have to indulge the president’s delusions?”

Ossoff raised $20 million during the second quarter of 2026 and had $42 million left to spend. Collins raised about $2.1 million and had about the same amount in his coffers. And a 20-to-1 money advantage certainly helps a politician trying to stay in office, and in the spotlight.

Smith offered one caution about Ossoff.

“You can’t live off one great speech or one viral exchange,” she said. “You have to prove you can perform in every format.” The question, she said, is how someone goes “from flavor of the month to a more serious national political figure.”

Elizabeth Taylor’s 1963 Historical Epic Reclaims Top Spot in Film History

0

When cinema fans delve into the annals of Hollywood history, few films embody its grand, tumultuous spirit more than “Cleopatra” from 1963. With a runtime exceeding four hours, this epic not only captivated audiences but also teetered dangerously close to financial ruin for its studio, remaining an intriguing mix of triumph and turmoil.

At a superficial glance, “Cleopatra” might be imagined as a powerhouse of box office success, akin to the likes of “Avatar.” Such assumptions seem justified when considering its stellar cast, featuring Elizabeth Taylor as the majestic Egyptian queen. As she defied Roman rule in a passionate entanglement with Mark Antony, portrayed by Richard Burton, alongside Rex Harrison as Caesar, the film was a magnet for moviegoers.

Upon its June 12, 1963 premiere, “Cleopatra” initially did not storm to the top of the box office charts. It wasn’t until the July 4th weekend that it claimed the top spot, grossing $725,000. This accolade marked the beginning of a persistently strong performance lasting until the end of September, with sporadic resurgences in both October and November. However, its momentum paused abruptly following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

Throughout its theatrical journey, “Cleopatra” amassed $57 million domestically, complemented by an additional $14 million abroad, making it the highest-grossing film of its year. It garnered nine Academy Award nominations and claimed four wins. Nonetheless, the film’s legacy was overshadowed by its notorious production costs, branding it a financial misadventure.

Cleopatra nearly ended 20th Century Fox

In 1963, $71 million in box office receipts would typically signify a blockbuster hit. Initially, “Cleopatra” embarked on its cinematic voyage with a $5 million budget, but it encountered numerous setbacks. Among its most notorious expenses were its extravagant set designs, which earned it the reputation of having some of the priciest film sets ever constructed.

For starters, filming began in London with the exorbitant sets being built from the ground up. But poor weather degraded many of the sets and palm trees. It also didn’t help that Elizabeth Taylor, who required a $1 million salary all on her own, came down with double pneumonia while in London, causing further delays.

In addition to expensive sets and actors, there were changes behind the scenes, as the original director, Reuben Mamoulian, was fired and replaced with Joseph L. Mankiewicz, who rewrote the script at night and would shoot the new scenes during the day. This caused its own overages. Since no one knew what was happening on a day-to-day basis, thousands of extras stood around waiting for orders, all while getting paid. When all was said and done, “Cleopatra” racked up a budget of $44 million, which would be the equivalent of $480 million in 2026.

Despite a formidable box office run, it wasn’t enough to recoup the losses. 20th Century Fox was forced to sell 260 acres of its Los Angeles-based backlot, which would eventually become the office and shopping complex known as Century City. For moviegoers, “Cleopatra” signaled a cultural shift: The days of big-budget historical epics were over, in favor of smaller, auteur-driven cinema, like “The Graduate.” But despite the chaos of the film’s production that became its legacy, “Cleopatra” is very much a box office bomb still worth watching.

New Insurance Rules for GLP-1: Are You Still Covered?

For millions of Americans, insurance policies have taken a significant turn regarding access to the widely-used GLP-1 weight loss medications.

In an update that could affect countless individuals, Medicare has unveiled the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge, set to launch in July 2026, providing some GLP-1 medications for a reduced price of $50 monthly.

Though the initiative is a pilot and will only be in effect until late 2027, it offers a period during which older citizens can avail themselves of the highly expensive medication at a significantly lowered cost.

Juliette Cubanski, the vice president and director of Medicare policy at the healthcare research nonprofit KFF, highlighted that of the over 70 million individuals on Medicare, at least 10 million are battling obesity. However, she noted that only a smaller segment of this demographic will qualify for the new program.

Who qualifies for the GLP-1 Bridge program?

Only people with Part D prescription drug coverage through Medicare will qualify, for starters. (About 56 million people had Medicare drug coverage in 2025.)

But eligibility will also be determined by weight and other factors. To qualify, you need to meet one of the following requirements when starting GLP-1 treatment:

  • A BMI (body mass index) of 35 or higher

  • A BMI between 30 and 34.99, with one or more additional conditions:
    • Diastolic heart failure
  • Uncontrolled high blood pressure/hypertension
  • Chronic kidney disease, stage 3a or higher
  • Prediabetes
  • Previous heart attack or stroke
  • Blocked arteries in arms or legs with symptoms
  • A BMI between 27 and 29.99, with one or more additional conditions:
    • Prediabetes
  • Previous heart attack or stroke
  • Blocked arteries in arms or legs with symptoms
  • Medicare beneficiaries who have sleep apnea, diabetes or fatty liver disease can’t access the program, but their Medicare Part D insurance might cover their GLP-1s separately based on those diagnoses.

There aren’t any hard numbers on how many people will benefit, and Dr. Mehmet Oz, administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, declined to speculate on a figure.

If you think you might qualify, the first step is to contact your health care provider, CMS says on its website. The provider must send a prescription for one of the covered GLP-1 drugs to a pharmacy and fill out a prior authorization form.

More information on who qualifies can be found on the Medicare website.

    Only some GLP-1s are included

The covered medications include drugmaker Eli Lilly’s Foundayo oral tablets and Zepbound KwikPens and Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy injections and tablets. Those GLP-1s have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for weight loss, Cubanski said.

For those in the program, the cost is $50 per month, regardless of dosage. But those payments won’t contribute to their insurance deductibles or out-of-pocket maximums. That’s because Medicare, rather than the Part D insurer, is subsidizing the prescription.

All of the GLP-1 medications, regardless of brand name, work in a similar way. The drugs mimic a hormone that lowers blood sugar, slows digestion, and tricks the brain into thinking its fuller for longer.

Fugitive on the Run for 20 Years Captured at Sea in Major U.S. Manhunt Breakthrough

    0

After more than two decades on the run, one of Rhode Island’s most elusive fugitives has finally been caught at sea, ending his dramatic saga. The journey of evasion, which began during a rape trial, reached its conclusion beyond the horizon.

Ronald L. Fischer, a familiar face to viewers of America’s Most Wanted, was arrested at the age of 70. Authorities caught him on his 56-foot sailing vessel approximately an hour from the New Jersey coast, as detailed in a statement released July 16 by the U.S. Marshals Service.

“This arrest is proof that evading justice is never a permanent escape,” stated Wing Chau, U.S. Marshal for the District of Rhode Island. He further emphasized, “Ronald Fischer spent over twenty years believing he was beyond the reach of justice. Yet, the relentless dedication of the Rhode Island Violent Fugitive Task Force, in collaboration with our partners, ensured he would never rest easy.”

What Was Ronald L. Fischer Convicted of?

Fischer was once the head of the anesthesia department at Memorial Hospital in Pawtucket. He mysteriously disappeared in 2005 while on trial in Newport, having been accused of raping a woman aboard his 60-foot yacht, aptly named the Lion King, according to insights from The Providence Journal.

As the trial drew to a close, Fischer vanished without a trace, but not before sending a final email to his defense attorney. The subject line was stark and ominous: “Goodbye.”

“Although I believe my trial has gone very well and expect to be acquitted and dismissed, the small chance of losing could carry extremely and unacceptably harsh penalties,” Fischer wrote, per the news outlet. “I have therefore decided not to take the risk and leave the U.S. and enjoy life in another country where I have long been carefully planning a good, safe, secure and comfortable life.”

The trial continued in Fischer’s absence and he was convicted of first-degree sexual assault.

Ronald Fischer Was Captured After Authorities Received New Leads

For years, the former doctor managed to elude authorities, ultimately earning a spot on Rhode Island’s Most Wanted Fugitives list.

In 2009, then-deputy marshal for Rhode Island W. Zachary Malinowski told The Providence Journal that investigators believed Fischer managed to stay off the radar by moving around and relying on others.

“People are unknowingly helping him,” he said at the time. “They don’t know who he is or what he is wanted for.”

His time on the run came to an end after Deputy U.S. Marshals, along with Rhode Island Fugitive Task Force and FBI, received new investigative leads this week about Fischer’s whereabouts.

“Information received by the Task Force was rapidly analyzed, corroborated, and determined to be credible and actionable,” the U.S. Marshal’s Office said, “ultimately leading investigators to New York.”

They determined that Fischer was operating a 56-foot sailing vessel, named The Silver Lining, under the alias Richard Graydon.

Working with the U.S. Coast Guard’s 45-foot Response Boat, the marshals were able to locate the boat and apprehend Fischer without incident in the open ocean about an hour off the New Jersey shore, authorities said.

“You can run, but you cannot hide from justice,” First Assistant United States Attorney Charles C. Calenda said, according to The Providence Journal. “Thanks to the determined, coordinated efforts of the Rhode Island Violent Fugitive Task Force, the U.S. Marshals Service, our federal, state, and local law enforcement partners, and the dedicated prosecutors in this office, Ronald Fischer will now return to Rhode Island to face the consequences he sought to evade for more than 20 years.”

Fischer was wanted for first-degree sexual assault, failure to appear and flight to avoid prosecution.

“We are proud of the persistent, coordinated work that brought him to justice and the numerous Troopers, both currently serving and retired, who pursued this case for the last two decades,” The Rhode Island State Police added in their own statement following the arrest. “They never stopped seeking justice for his victim and we are thankful for their dedication.”

It’s unclear whether Fischer has retained an attorney.

California Man Confesses to Robbing Three Subway Restaurants in One Week, Reports FBI

    0

A man from California confessed his involvement on Friday in a series of armed heists and attempted hold-ups targeting several Subway sandwich shops in Orange County.

Freddie Alexander Lopez, a 24-year-old resident of Santa Ana, pleaded guilty to a federal robbery charge, admitting to terrifying cashiers with weapons as he stormed three Subway locations and a donut shop, all within a span of roughly six days.

Lopez’s approach was consistent at each location. According to the FBI, he would arrive under the cover of night, clad in a dark hoodie and mask. Once inside, he would casually order a small item, like a bag of chips, and patiently wait for the cashier to open the register before revealing a weapon and demanding cash.

Investigators were able to tie Lopez to the heists, thanks to surveillance videos from the businesses and cellphone location data that placed him close to the scene of the robberies at the crucial times.

Lopez’s spree of robberies began on Jan. 27, 2026, when he walked into a Subway in Santa Ana at 11:57 p.m., according to court records.

After pulling a knife on the cashier, Lopez was able to get away with $300, per the criminal complaint.

During the early morning hours of Jan. 30, Lopez entered a Subway in Fountain Valley and once again demanded money while threatening the cashier with a knife, according to the plea agreement.

“Give me all the money, or I’ll hurt you,” Lopez said, according to witnesses who spoke with law enforcement.

This time, the cashier refused and shut the cash register, prompting Lopez to flee on foot, according to the criminal complaint.

Less than 30 minutes later, Lopez robbed a Yum Yum Donuts store about 5-and-a-half miles from the Subway he had just targeted, investigators said.

Two days later, on Feb. 1, Lopez walked into a third Subway restaurant in Anaheim, per the criminal complaint.

Surveillance footage reviewed by the FBI showed Lopez was armed with what appeared to be a black pistol. When the female cashier refused to give him money, the footage showed him jumping over the counter and trying to wrestle the key to the register out of her hand.

After Lopez failed to get the key and could not open the register with the touch screen, he left the restaurant, according to the criminal complaint.

On Feb. 6, the Santa Ana Police Department arrested Lopez during a traffic stop, believing his vehicle was the one that was driven by the suspect in the robberies, according to the FBI.

Officers found what appeared to be “the same handgun, knife, mask, and glasses used during the robberies,” the FBI said. Investigators noted that they found a replica gun in his car that appeared to match the one used in the Feb. 1 attempted robbery.

After his arrest, Lopez was released ahead of his trial but was re-arrested on April 30 on the federal robbery charge.

Following his guilty plea, Lopez is scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 2. He faces a maximum of 20 years in prison.

Ukraine Strikes Moscow Warehouse, Bringing Conflict Closer to Putin’s Homefront

    0

Thick smoke engulfed the Moscow region today after Ukrainian drones targeted the sprawling logistics hub of Wildberries, Russia’s equivalent to Amazon.

A subsequent assault in Tambov resulted in seven fatalities and left over twenty people injured at another facility owned by the online retail giant.

In Noginsk, an essential oil depot burst into flames following an attack, prompting the hasty evacuation of a nearby maternity hospital.

Meanwhile, with military recruitment challenges mounting, a beleaguered Vladimir Putin is reportedly considering enlisting imprisoned mafia members to bolster his forces in the ongoing conflict.

The assault on the Elektrostal Wildberries depot – situated 36 miles (58km) from the Kremlin – unleashed a towering column of toxic black smoke, marking one of the most significant fires since the conflict began.

The blaze was visible more than 30miles (48km) away, with smog reported in parts of Moscow.

There were reports Ukraine used jet drones in today’s attacks.

The two hits on Russia’s largest online retailer are part of Ukraine’s campaign to make Vladimir Putin’s citizens feel the consequences of the war he unleashed and refuses to stop, and are set to cause major disruption.

Analysts say it is also in response to Russian strikes on postal hubs in Ukraine.

Two dozen people were wounded in the overnight strikes on the Moscow region, and seven night shift workers were killed and at least 25 wounded in the attack on Wildberries in Kotovsk, 270miles (434km) southeast of Moscow.

‘Finally, counter-actions against logistical hubs controlled by the Russians have begun.

‘There are far more of these hubs in Russian-controlled territory than there are in ours. They all need to be destroyed.’

Ukraine continued its war on Russian oil tankers and other supply ships, with 13 hit overnight, mostly in the Black Sea.

Ramzan Kadyrov, warlord leader of Chechnya and close Putin ally, called for direct revenge strikes on NATO states.

He told Putin: ‘You just set the task, and we will take care of the rest.

‘It would be beneficial to start with the countries that, hiding behind the NATO acronym, openly and brazenly provide weapons, data, and other support to the Ukrainian fascists.’

Western states supplying Ukraine should ‘smell the scent of TNT’, he continued, and ‘as soon as they hear the roar of the Kalashnikov and the clatter of the T-90, they will immediately understand’ and halt their aid.

‘All this satanic scum only understands the language of force.

‘They cannot comprehend that Russia is currently conducting restrained military operations with minimal losses among the civilian population.

‘But as soon as we unleash our military machine, as soon as our gears begin to grind their bones, all Western leaders will line up to express their deepest apologies.’

Meanwhile, members of gangs and organised crime groups will be allowed to enter into contracts with the Ministry of Defence so that they can be sent to the war zones.

The move will see members of mafia and armed gangs fight for the first time.

‘Those convicted or accused of smuggling weapons and drugs, theft of nuclear materials, organising illegal migration, and participating in the activities of ‘undesirable’ organisations will also be able to sign contracts,’ reported the Moscow Times.

The move is enabled during periods of mobilisation, martial law or wartime.

It highlights the desperation of Putin who is now losing an estimated 7,000 troops a week on the battlefields.

There is strong speculation he will order a full mobilisation of military age men in September, soon after parliamentary elections have taken place.

Russia, meanwhile, claimed almost 400 Ukrainian drones were shot down overnight.

‘We have had some beautiful memories together with the bump, I’m deeply thankful to these important people in my life who have let me feel nothing but love and take many stresses and worries away. I feel lucky to have such amazing and pure love and support around me.

‘I will never forget this period of time in my life and those who supported me, I am eternally grateful.’

Zahida also emotionally opened up about the loss of her father and said she has been ‘grieving him all over again’ and she feels ‘heavily connected’ to him again.

She shared: ‘I imagined my dad would be here to meet his grandchild, so I grieved him all over again because it was my dad’s dream to become a grandad.

‘Some of his final words to me were “I am leaving all my prayers and blessings to you and your baby girl”.

‘I feel this was the baby my dad was speaking about, and I feel him and her are heavily connected through ways I can’t even explain.’

Zahida then revealed that all of the cravings she has had during her pregnancy have been what she fed her dad at the end of his life.

She continued: ‘The cravings I have had were all the things I was feeding my dad at the end of his life and how beautiful now I get to have those things for the beginning of new life – my baby.

‘But this is not a sad post, it’s a happy one. I am a hugely family orientated person, no matter how far in the world I’ve gone, my core is my family.

‘So my baby is the biggest blessing of my life, I have felt so lucky to be carrying her all this time, feeling her grow and feeling her little kicks become big ones.

‘Despite how uncomfortable it feels when she digs her foot between my ribs, this journey has been fascinating and magical and  have loved being pregnant and snuggling my belly at night knowing my baby is in there.’

Zahida went on to say the baby is ‘the biggest blessing’ of her life and she can’t wait to start her next chapter.

She concluded: ‘For me, my life isn’t ending, it’s just beginning again and I am so excited to welcome my little miracle into the world and begin this next chapter of my life, becoming a mama.

‘To all parents and those who are doing it alone, or are going to be doing it alone, you are so strong and I have SO MUCH respect and admiration for you. You should be incredibly proud of yourself.
