Record Turnout Defies Texas Heat at San Antonio’s Stars & Stripes Independence Day Parade

0

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — In a vibrant display of patriotism, thousands of people from San Antonio gathered along the city’s downtown streets near the historic Alamo. They came to witness the Stars & Stripes Independence Day Parade, even as the mercury threatened to climb towards triple digits on Saturday. The parade proudly showcased traditional Fourth of July floats, captivating military bands, and lively Tex-Mex performances, contributing to the festive atmosphere.

The event, dubbed the Stars & Stripes on Houston Street Independence Day Parade, was part of a grand celebration marking America’s 250th birthday. Revived in 2024 after more than a century’s hiatus, the parade has become a central feature of San Antonio’s Fourth of July festivities.

Rear Admiral A.B. Cruz III, USN (Retired), took center stage as the parade’s distinguished Grand Marshal. A proud native of San Antonio, Cruz embarked on his naval career after graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1980 and retired in 2013. His role as Grand Marshal added significance to the celebration of America’s 250th birthday, especially in San Antonio, which is also known as “Military City USA” due to its numerous military bases and the substantial community of active-duty and retired military personnel.

Fort Sam Houston’s 323rd Army band led the parade through downtown, playing patriotic marches as other floats and performance groups trailed behind. Known as “Fort Sam’s Own, ” it traces its lineage to military bands at the historic fort that date back to 1893.

On one corner along the route, a trio of female singers entertained the crowds awaiting the arrival of the parade floats by singing patriotic songs, including some 1940s wartime victory songs in the style of the Andrews Sisters.

Adding a touch of Southwest flair, a crew of Mexican folkloric dancers dressed in traditional garb with touches of red, white, and blue performed traditional dances during the parade, representing local Tex-Mex culture in San Antonio.

The attending crowds appeared to be coping well with the high temperatures on Saturday. San Antonio is currently experiencing very hot weather typical of most mid-summers. The heat index routinely hovers between 99 and 106 degrees Fahrenheit on most days. Residents are acclimated to the conditions, but tourists visiting the city may find it quite challenging to adjust to the heat.

Fortunately, the Stars & Stripes parade concluded without any significant medical emergencies. High temperatures in Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia forced the cancellation of parades. Many smaller parades and events across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic were also canceled due to heat-related concerns.

Saturday’s celebration of America’s 250th birthday will continue throughout the day in San Antonio with numerous family-friendly events and will culminate with a music and fireworks show at the city’s Woodlawn Lake Park later in the evening.

Morocco’s Rising Star Powers Historic World Cup Quarter-Finals Journey

0

As Mohamed Ouahbi, the Moroccan manager, revisits the first half of their heavy defeat in Houston, he’ll likely be even more certain of his team’s potential to reach the World Cup final.

During the opening 45 minutes against Canada, Morocco seemed to lose their identity. The players bickered among themselves and appeared disjointed on the field, performing worse than anyone might have anticipated.

Young sensation Ayyoub Bouaddi was barely noticeable, and the team’s key player, Ismael Saibari, struggled with a hamstring injury, nearly in tears when he had to leave the game. Meanwhile, captain Achraf Hakimi was largely sidelined from the action.

It marked a historical low for Morocco, as they failed to register even a single shot in the first 25 minutes of a World Cup match, entering the halftime break with a meager 0.02 expected goals (xG).

Ouahbi spurred his team into action, prompting a players-only huddle in the tunnel before they returned to the pitch for the second half. The transformation of the team by the end of the 98-minute game was astonishing compared to their lackluster first-half performance.

A brace from Azzedine Ounahi and one from substitute Soufiane Rahimi, settled this last-16 tie. Moments of genuine quality that undid all of Canada’s carefully constructed game-planning.

Strife didn’t break Morocco, just like it didn’t break them against the Netherlands when they were staring an early exit in the face. Just like it won’t break them in the quarter-final against France or Paraguay.

BELIEVE IN BRAHIM

Brahim Diaz is used to pressure having turned out for Real Madrid, Manchester City, and AC Milan.

He’s a Champions League winner, a Premier League winner, a two-time LaLiga winner, a Super Cup winner, a Serie A winner, an Africa Cup of Nations winner, you get the idea.

So to see him questioned by Moroccan media in the lead-up to this game was bordering on the remarkable.

‘He is in a good place and is one of our best players. He is relaxed, and so am I,’ Ouahbi said. How pleased he’ll have been to see Diaz fire the perfect message to his critics in Houston.

Diaz, the outstanding player at the 2025 ‌Africa Cup of Nations where he finished as tournament top scorer, took over this second half and took responsibility when his side was searching for its leaders to step forward.

First he teed up Ounahi for his and Morocco’s second goal with a perfectly weighted cutback, then came the final-second breakaway when his through ball was turned in by Rahimi, taking his tournament total to four assists. Only France’s Michael Olise has more (5).

‘With major players, we are always expecting more from them,’ Ouahbi said, ‘but he does not need to be a game-changer every single day.’

Diaz, who now has the most assists of ANY African player in World Cup history, was questioned and answered the call. Ouahbi will be delighted.

COPING WITHOUT SAIBARI

The black mark against this victory for Morocco centres on whether Saibari’s tournament is over or not.

With Saibari flat on his back, he pulled up his shirt, desperate for cameras not to see the tears that looked set to inevitably flow as his game, and maybe tournament, was cut short.

Bayern Munich’s latest signing, who scored in all three group stage games, was clutching his right hamstring and, if that is any more than the most minor of tweaks, it appears inevitable that Saibari’s World Cup is over and done with.

The fact Morocco scored with all three of their shots on target in the second half is a positive and will be the type of clinical nature Morocco will need to sustain if Saibari is missing from the line-up.

Rahimi was a willing runner and his hold-up was crucial to helping Morocco get up the pitch when they began turning the screw.

But if Saibari is out, things have to change. Morocco will hope the second half against Canada put down a blueprint on how to succeed without their star man at the point of their attack.

CANADA STAR POWER

Jesse Marsch sat on a drinks cooler, with his head resting in the palm of his left hand, struggling to understand how Canada had done so much right, only to get the most important part wrong to exit the World Cup.

This Morocco team, unbeaten in 33 games, stretching all the way back to a defeat to Kenya in August 2025, have ‘literally zero weaknesses’ Marsch said in the build-up.

And yet Marsch had a plan. Back once again as the underdogs, Marsch had a trick or two up his sleeve.

For 45 minutes the plan worked flawlessly in Houston, restricting Morocco to nothing of any value.

But, truth be told, Canada didn’t have enough creativity, enough invention, enough flair, enough star power to turn brilliant execution out of possession to the decisive moment when they did have the ball.

When the ball left Ounahi’s boot, picked out cleverly from a Morocco free-kick five minutes into the second half, the dynamic of this contest changed.

Canada’s disciplined 4-4-2 that had made Morocco look increasingly normal waned. They had to turn the screw and lacked the quality or invention to do so.

And so it became stretched. It became open. It became the type of game Morocco wanted all along. It became easy for Morocco.

Canada's players were diligent off the ball but need more star power and invention on it

Canada’s players were diligent off the ball but need more star power and invention on it

Goals two and three did not tell the story of the game but at this level, reality checks are often brutal and this was no exception for Canada.

The second was a gift as Canada overcommitted chasing an equaliser and it was Ounahi who converted after a swift four-on-three break.

And then, in the closing seconds, the 98th minute, came the third. A real dagger. The reality check.

By this point Canada were sending their goalkeeper up with reckless abandon and Rahimi, teed up by Diaz, put the cherry on top after another breakaway goal.

Canada’s plan worked exceptionally well to nullify Morocco for 45 minutes. But eventually the onus will fall on you and your players to produce a moment or two of magic.

That was what separated the sides and is what Canada will need if they are to mirror what Morocco have done in back-to-back World Cups. At this level you need star power – and Canada simply don’t have it.

Celebrating 250 Years: Recognizing the Women Who Broadened American Democracy

WASHINGTON, D.C. (DC Bureau) — As the nation eagerly anticipates the grand celebration marking its 250th year, a significant addition to the National Mall serves to shine a light on the women whose contributions are woven into the fabric of American democracy. This new monument honors their pivotal role, ensuring their stories become a substantial chapter in the narrative of the United States.

The Women’s Suffrage National Monument is set to make history as the National Mall’s first memorial dedicated exclusively to the women’s suffrage movement. Advocates for the monument view it as a crucial step in acknowledging the relentless efforts of generations of women who have strived to transform the nation’s core ideals of liberty and equality into a reality accessible to all.

Washington Correspondent Raquel Martin spoke with the leaders behind the project about why they believe America’s “front yard” should reflect not only the nation’s founders, but the women who spent decades pushing the country closer to a more perfect union.

The special also explores the years-long bipartisan effort to bring the monument to life, why its location carries symbolic significance, and how Americans will help shape its final design as the nation marks America 250.

New Poll Reveals 68% of New Yorkers Embrace American Pride

In the heart of New York City, patriotism shines brightly with a vibrant display of red, white, and blue.

A fresh survey, released just as the country gears up to commemorate its 250th birthday, suggests that an overwhelming number of city dwellers take pride in calling themselves Americans.

Despite New York’s longtime reputation as one of the less patriotic states, the Honan Strategy Group’s findings offer a different narrative. According to the poll, a notable 68% of New Yorkers expressed pride in being citizens of the United States.

Conversely, only 21% of those polled conveyed sentiments that could be considered anti-American.

While a significant portion of participants embrace their American identity, there is also a prevalent concern among them regarding the nation’s current trajectory.

A whopping 68% of Big Apple residents surveyed said they are proud to be American, a new poll has revealed. Konstantin Yuganov – stock.adobe.com

Of the city dwellers surveyed, 43% percent think the country is in a “serious decline” and 62% are pessimistic about its future over the next 10 years.

Thirty percent said America has dire issues but they can be fixed, according to the poll.

Only 19% of respondents believe the United States is the greatest nation in the world — even though 55% said they were thrilled for the America 250 celebrations in New York City.

“New Yorkers aren’t anti-American. They’re alarmed about America. That’s a very different thing and it’s the mood heading into July 4,” Bradley Honan, the group’s CEO, told The Post.

New York’s complicated relationship with patriotism is nothing new.

The state is the second-least-patriotic state in the country, according to a WalletHub survey from June.

Arkansas residents are the least proud to be American, while people in Virginia are the most patriotic among all 50 states, that survey found.

Unraveling the Tragic Murder of TikToker Swavy and the 10-Day Crime Spree Behind It

Back in 2020, Matima “Swavy” Miller transitioned from a teenager with aspirations to a TikTok phenomenon. Within just over a year on the platform, he had garnered several million fans with his vibrant dance routines, usually performed in a lively pair of Crocs.

However, his swift ascent came to a tragic halt on the morning of July 5, 2021, when Swavy was shot and killed outside his home in Wilmington, Delaware, as he was delivering breakfast to his mother.

Determined to find justice, his family and fans helped investigators reconstruct the events, uncovering that the perpetrator of Swavy’s murder was also connected to numerous other crimes.

Who Was Matima “Swavy” Miller?

Long before TikTok became his stage, Swavy showed off his moves for his family in his living room.

“He was always an exceptional dancer,” recalled his sister Qua’Naijha Clark in the Investigation Discovery series Deadly Influence: The Social Media Murders. “He idolized Michael Jackson, Chris Brown, and always moved to the rhythm naturally.”

“He aimed to be among the best,” she continued. “He always believed he would achieve his dreams, which initially led him to take on TikTok.”

Swavy rapidly gained a massive following through his dance and humor videos, reaching his first million followers in just nine months.

As violence escalated in his community, Swavy’s family noted that he was seeking a way out of Wilmington. He was focused on expanding his career as a content creator and traveling for TikTok collaborations.

“He was trying to save up for a house in Atlanta,” his best friend Quan shared on Deadly Influence. “He wanted to move everybody that he cares about into a different state for better opportunities and a better lifestyle, just everything.”

What Happened on the Day of Swavy’s Murder?

On the morning of July 5, 2021, Swavy went to get his mother, Chanelle Clark, breakfast from McDonald’s and brought along Quan for the car ride.

“When we were on the way home, randomly, he just had, like, this sentimental conversation with me,” Quan shared. “He was like, ‘I love you, bro, and I got a plan.’ I’m gonna move us out to Atlanta this or next week.”

When they got back to the apartment with breakfast, Swavy was “shot at point-blank range” by a man in a ski mask, according to court records.

Quan witnessed the fatal encounter and rushed to get his friend’s mom from inside the home.

“My son was face down on the ground,” Chanelle recalled in the docuseries. “I screamed and ran over there to him, and everything just went out of my head. I saw three shots in his back, and it was another three shots in his chest.”

She said an ambulance took Swavy to the hospital, where she learned he died of his injuries.

The following day, their family broke the news of his death to his followers.

“He was taken away from us due to a senseless act of gun violence,” they wrote on Instagram, adding that the family was “working diligently to get justice for Swavy.”

Who Killed Matima “Swavy” Miller?

As a witness to the attack, Quan was key in identifying the man behind it: Israel Lecompte.

“Within hours of the shooting, [Quan] sent [Swavy]’s older brother, Rahkim, a picture of Israel and identified him as [Swavy]’s shooter,” according to Delaware Supreme Court records. Then, less than two weeks later, Quan “spoke with police and identified Israel as the shooter from a six-person lineup.”

Witnesses also placed a black car with tinted windows near the scene, which was supported by surveillance footage from a nearby gas station, per court records. Days later, a stolen vehicle was recovered and processed for evidence; Israel’s fingerprint was found on the driver’s side door, and handgun cartridges were found in the car. The owner of the stolen car later testified that the vehicle seen in the surveillance footage was his.

Israel was also identified in a police lineup by Deborah Cleveland as the man who she saw shoot her grandson, Quinton Dorsey, on July 3, 2021, two days prior to Swavy’s death.

Cleveland said that she, Quinton and his young cousins had been sitting on the porch outside when a man in a sweatshirt shot him “multiple times in the head at point-blank range,” according to court records. Shell casings at the scene were identified as 9 mm Luger—the same type as the cartridges in the stolen car identified to be at the scene of Swavy’s shooting.

Quinton was an entrepreneur behind the clothing brand Bag Season and had previously collaborated with Swavy.

“At first it was just business, just collabs,” Qua’Naijha said in Deadly Influence, “but I feel like they grew a real bond afterwards.”

Following a months-long police investigation, in November 2021, the Delaware Department of Justice announced that Israel had been indicted on 38 felony charges, including two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Swavy and Quinton.

The case went to trial in 2024, and that April, a New Castle County jury found him guilty of the two counts of murder, 14 counts of first-degree reckless endangerment, four counts of robbery and 21 counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, among other charges.

Israel received two life sentences for the two murder convictions, with an additional 163 years for the other convictions, Delaware Online reported.

Why Did Israel Lecompte Kill Swavy?

In a news release announcing his conviction, prosecutors in the case said Israel was the “last remaining defendant in the state’s years-long case against the violent gang NorthPak.“

“We think Israel Lecompte wanted to go out and prove his worth to his fellow gang members,” the lead prosecutor Joe Grubb said in Deadly Influence. “So, he went on a 10-day crime spree and took it upon himself to rob, shoot, steal and promote the gang continuously on Instagram.”

Grubb added that Swavy and Quinton were “absolutely innocent victims” with “no gang affiliation whatsoever.”

“[They] were two entrepreneurs. They were innovators,” he said. “Israel Lecompte considered that a score for his gang if he were to take them out, and sadly, that’s what he chose to do.”

Where Is Swavy’s Killer Israel Lecompte Now?

Israel is currently serving his dual life sentences. He was last noted as serving time at James T. Vaughn Correctional Center, a state prison in Smyrna, Del., inmate records show.

In Israel’s direct appeal in 2025, the Delaware Supreme Court affirmed the lower court’s verdicts, finding that the appeal was “wholly without merit,” per court records.

US Lawsuit Targets Maduro with Allegations of Ordering Deadly Police Operations

0

A fresh legal predicament has emerged for former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in the United States. Five Venezuelan families have filed a civil lawsuit, accusing him of orchestrating a police unit in Venezuela that engaged in extrajudicial killings and torture during his tenure in office.

The lawsuit claims that Maduro founded the Special Action Forces of Venezuela, commonly known as FAES, and maintained authority over the unit as it purportedly executed a campaign of extrajudicial killings between 2017 and 2021. The families are petitioning for compensatory and punitive damages under the Torture Victim Protection Act.

This legal action marks the second avenue of litigation against Maduro in the United States, where he is already facing trial on separate federal charges concerning drug trafficking and weapons. The lawsuit maintains that the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York is an appropriate venue, as Maduro is presently held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.

The proceedings, taking place at the Daniel Patrick Moynihan United States Courthouse in New York City on March 26, 2026, accuse Maduro of leading a criminal cartel of Venezuelan officials involved in distributing cocaine to the U.S. (Jane Rosenberg)

According to the complaint, FAES officers routinely entered homes before dawn wearing black clothing and face coverings, separated young men from their families, forced many to their knees, executed them and then staged crime scenes to make it appear the victims had “resisted authority.” Plaintiffs also allege officers looted homes, planted weapons and transported victims to hospitals after they had already died in an effort to conceal the alleged killings.

The lawsuit details five incidents between 2017 and 2021 involving six victims and also accuses FAES officers of torturing three relatives by beating, detaining or forcing them to witness the killings before they were denied justice through Venezuela’s judicial system.

Attorneys representing the plaintiffs, Maduro’s attorney Barry Pollack and Amnesty International did not immediately respond to News Media’s request for comment.

(Jane Rosenberg)

The lawsuit alleges Maduro established FAES in 2017 as a special tactical unit within Venezuela’s National Bolivarian Police and later publicly defended the force despite criticism from the United Nations and other human rights organizations. It cites reports from the United Nations, Human Rights Watch and the U.S. State Department documenting allegations of widespread human rights abuses by the unit.

The families argue they have been unable to obtain justice in Venezuela because prosecutors either refused to pursue investigations or failed to hold senior officials accountable, leaving them without an effective legal remedy in their home country.

The Torture Victim Protection Act allows civil claims in U.S. courts over alleged torture and extrajudicial killings committed under the authority of a foreign government.

Maduro served as Venezuela’s president from 2013 until 2026, according to the complaint. He has pleaded not guilty in his criminal case and has previously described himself as a “prisoner of war.”

Discover 5 Must-Watch TV Series for Fans of Dune: Prophecy

The cinematic world has found its new science-fiction titan in the “Dune” films. Some aficionados might even contend that the series has eclipsed “Star Wars” as the premier choice for die-hard sci-fi enthusiasts. “Dune: Part Two” not only garnered near-universal acclaim from critics but also snagged a coveted Best Picture nomination at the Oscars. In today’s interconnected media landscape, it’s unsurprising that even the most critically lauded films venture beyond the big screen to expand their narratives. The “Dune” saga is no exception, making its leap into the television realm with HBO’s “Dune: Prophecy.”

Far from being a lesser endeavor, “Dune: Prophecy” stands tall as one of the foremost sci-fi offerings on HBO Max today. Shrewdly set 10,000 years before the tales of Paul Atreides (played by Timothée Chalamet), the show takes audiences on a journey through the nascent stages of the Bene Gesserit. Viewers are treated to the mesmerizing evolution of this influential religious and social order, well before the epic events of “Dune” unfold.

Notably, “Dune: Prophecy” is fully capable of standing on its own, not requiring prior viewership of the films to grasp its intricate narrative. With its rich tapestry of political and philosophical themes, the series caters to fans of thought-provoking science fiction, offering a cerebral dive into a well-crafted universe. For those who enjoy the intellectual delights of sci-fi, offerings similar to “Dune: Prophecy” promise a satisfying escape.

Raised by Wolves

Unfortunately, it’s the norm in the entertainment industry for new sci-fi series to lean on pre-established franchises to secure success. This reality was starkly evidenced by the cancellation of HBO’s “Raised by Wolves” after just two seasons—a casualty, in part, of the sweeping changes following the Warner Bros./Discovery merger. Yet, despite its untimely end, the available episodes of “Raised by Wolves” remain a worthwhile exploration of the genre, offering intriguing themes and a robust narrative.

The gripping premise of “Raised by Wolves” features androids Mother (Amanda Collin) and Father (Abubakar Salim), who are tasked with nurturing human children on an alien planet. Amidst this new frontier, conflicting religious ideologies threaten the colony’s peace, mirroring the central theme shared with “Dune: Prophecy”: the manipulation of religion as a tool for mass control. It’s a fascinating concept tackled with insight by both narratives, providing fertile ground for viewers who relish a deeper, thematic approach to science fiction.

The Bene Gesserit, as depicted in “Dune: Prophecy,” aim to manipulate bloodlines in order to bring forth the one true messiah. “Raised by Wolves” sees a remnant of humanity far away from Earth, yet religion based on exterminating non-believers continues to foster. “Raised by Wolves” offers the interesting idea as to whether humans are naturally hardwired to believe in something greater than themselves, even when completely removed from traditional hierarchal religious structures.

The Expanse

If you don’t mind following along to a “Game of Thrones”-scale cabal of characters to keep track of, “The Expanse” is the kind of large-scale sci-fi most networks wouldn’t dare touch. In fact, “The Expanse” had to find a home elsewhere when it was cancelled at SyFy, but it fortunately found a home at Amazon Prime Video for three more seasons.

It’s a good thing, too, as there was plenty more story to tell. “The Expanse” is set hundreds of years in the future where humanity has colonized the galaxy, but that’s only led to greater political turmoil, as different worlds vie for the same limited resources. “The Expanse” explodes into a gold rush-esque quest for every planet to acquire as much power as possible, leading the galaxy to the brink of war.

Like “Raised by Wolves,” “The Expanse” has a lot to say about how those who control what stories get passed down through the generations ultimately hold the most power. But it’s also a far more realistic portrayal of what an intergalactic humanity might look like. “Dune: Prophecy” gets more fantastical with its depictions of various factions, but “The Expanse” feels all too real with how different heads of state are willing to behave when considering what move to make next to protect their own people.

Foundation

Frank Herbert and Isaac Asimov are both highly influential science-fiction authors. They laid the foundation for where the genre was heading decades into the future, so if you enjoy Herbert’s magnum opus with the “Dune” properties, then you owe it to yourself to watch “Foundation,” based on the works of Asimov.

“Foundation” on Apple TV is another epic space opera about dynasties and the manipulation of information. A brilliant mathematician, Hari Seldon (Jared Harris), brings on a protege in the form of Gaal Dornick (Lou Llobell) to verify his findings and confirm that a dark age is imminent. However, the least they can do is create the titular Foundation in order to preserve humanity’s knowledge so that it doesn’t become lost. But even with all of their knowledge and ability to predict future catastrophes, there are some events that can’t be mitigated.

“Foundation” is the rare sci-fi series that goes beyond just one set of events. It takes place over the course of centuries, showing that even though leaders and tyrants will come and go, what matters is ensuring the next generation gets started on the best footing possible. This grand story is told on an appropriately grand scale, as the budget is truly impressive. Each episode looks like its own mini-movie with superb effects, so even though it’s a show fundamentally about math, it never feels slow.

Andor

There’s a conspiracy that Star Wars stole a lot from “Dune,” and it’s easy to see certain similarities, despite both projects ultimately going off on their own paths. “Star Wars” has always been focused on being popcorn entertainment first and foremost while “Dune” has never been concerned with being palatable to the masses. The success of the movies is a byproduct of having an exceptional director behind the scenes more than anything.

But just like how the “Dune” films got a prequel with “Dune: Prophecy,” “Star Wars” got its own blast from the past with “Andor.” The series follows Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) prior to the events of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” which directly leads into the first “Star Wars” movie. We see Cassian become entrenched with the growing rebellion movement against the Empire. And “Andor” winds up being the most relevant Star Wars project of the last several years, as it comments on how authoritarian and fascism can take over a civilization and be met with widespread apathy.

But both “Andor” and “Dune: Prophecy” aren’t as interested in action as their big-screen counterparts. There’s still action to be sure, but they trade epic fights for backroom dealings. We get a glimpse at how wars are truly won behind the scenes outside of the battlefield. And both shows depict how the fate of entire worlds can come down to the actions of just one individual. The “Star Wars” galaxy would look very different by the time the sequel trilogy came around if it wasn’t for the actions of Cassian, who didn’t even want to be a rebel in the first place.

Babylon 5

It’s truly a phenomenal time to be a sci-fi fan in the current television landscape. There are so many shows that receive movie-level budgets, where you get epic visuals and grand storytelling one week to the next. But you don’t want to overlook where the genre has been in the medium of cheaper TV, and “Babylon 5” is one of many low-budget sci-fi shows that’s absolutely still worth watching.

“Babylon 5” may be from the 1990s, but it didn’t skimp on the grand storytelling. Set in the far off future, the show follows a crew that gets wrapped up in all sorts of interplanetary political conflicts, including Earth’s own descent into totalitarianism. “Babylon 5” was also a pioneer of sorts because it would regularly have storylines spanning multiple episodes. It wasn’t like “Star Trek” where you had an “alien race of the week”-type of format and only had two- or three-parters infrequently. “Babylon 5” expected its audience to show up and retain the lore to know what was at stake.

And like “Dune: Prophecy,” “Babylon 5” had some prophecies of its own. As you can see from this list, there are many shows where science meets myths, and in many cases, the two aren’t as far apart as one would assume.

Brazil and England facing tough opponents

Round of 16 kicks on with Brazil going against Norway at 6am on Monday morning.

Brazil has won more World Cups than any other nation and, save for a 1-1 draw with Morocco, has won every match of the tournament thus far.

Still, the South American champions are unlikely to have a walk in the park against the Norwegians and star striker Erling Haaland.

The winner of that match will advance to the quarter-finals, where they will face either Mexico or England, who meet at 10am on Monday at Mexico City Stadium, a venue that has already hosted some of the tournament’s most memorable matches.

Wake up for this one

If you’re only planning to watch some of the Round of 16, it’s fair to say it could be worth setting your alarm for 5am on Tuesday to witness Spain and Portugal go head to head.

After being held to a draw by underdogs Cape Verde in the first group-stage game, Spain has gone on to win every match since.

While Portugal had a less flattering set of group-stage results, Cristiano Ronaldo’s squad pulled out a dramatic comeback against Croatia in their Round of 32 match.

The other match of the day will be the United States against Belgium at 10am, with the hosts looking to secure a place in the quarter-finals against Portugal or Spain.

It could’ve been us

And to wrap up the Round of 16, Argentina will face Egypt at 2am on Wednesday.

This is the match that Australia would be playing had the Socceroos beaten Egypt. Now, Mo Salah’s side will face off against Lionel Messi’s Argentina.

Then at 6am, Switzerland will face Colombia, with the winner claiming the final spot in the quarter-finals.

Kendall Jenner, Jacob Elordi, and the Biebers Spotted in Idaho as Taylor Swift Plans Wedding

While Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s nuptials might have been the most sought-after event at Madison Square Garden, not every celebrity chose to spend their Friday evening there.

Amid much anticipation, the couple exchanged vows in a grand ceremony attended by approximately 1,000 relatives, close friends, and stars from various industries, taking place in New York City’s glittering backdrop.

The illustrious guest list included luminaries like Jennifer Lopez, Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks, Paul McCartney, Stevie Nicks, Selena Gomez, Bradley Cooper, and Gigi Hadid, all part of this celebrated occasion.

In contrast to the Manhattan fanfare, Kendall Jenner, Jacob Elordi, Justin Bieber, and Hailey Bieber opted for a leisurely getaway nearly 2,500 miles away in Idaho over the holiday weekend.

The quartet was seen gearing up for fun as they boarded a speedboat from Kendall’s private residence at the exclusive Gozzer Ranch Golf & Lake Club situated on the picturesque shores of Lake Coeur d’Alene.

Their absence from the wedding quickly fueled online speculation that they hadn’t made Swift and Kelce’s guest list, though it’s unclear whether any of the four were ever invited.

The Daily Mail has reached out to representatives for Jenner, Elordi and the Biebers for comment.

The group kept things low-key for the outing, with Kendall and Jacob both sporting baseball caps, Hailey pulling her hair into a tight bun and Justin opting for a hoodie.

The foursome were joined by several friends, turning the outing into a party of its own – though it was a far cry from the roughly 1,000 guests who reportedly attended Swift and Kelce’s lavish nuptials.

It may not come as a huge surprise to Swifties that Jenner wasn’t among the wedding guests, given Taylor’s years-long feud with her sister, Kim Kardashian.

The bad blood dates back to Kanye West’s infamous 2016 song Famous and the fallout over a leaked phone call, with Swift and Kardashian continuing to trade public barbs in the years since.

Hailey Bieber’s absence also raised eyebrows, with fans quick to point to her rumored feud with Swift’s BFF Selena Gomez.

Although both women have repeatedly denied any bad blood, that hasn’t stopped the internet from turning every social media move into fresh feud fodder.

The news comes after invited guest Maren Morris revealed the personalized favor Swift and Kelce handed out to guests.

The morning after the lavish celebration, Morris shared a series of glamorous Instagram snaps from the event before giving fans a closer look at the custom keepsake tucked away in the final photo.

The personalized handkerchief featured the couple’s bespoke wedding logo, made up of two intertwined Ts framed by hearts, alongside the wedding date, July 3, 2026, and the location, New York City.

In a sweet nod to the bride’s music, the memento also included the opening lyric from Swift’s 2014 hit Blank Space: ‘So it’s gonna be forever…’

Morris even paid tribute to the newlyweds in her caption, quoting another Swift classic as she wrote: ‘Baby just say yes,’ referencing the singer’s hit Love Story.

But the embroidered handkerchief wasn’t the only lavish gift guests took home during the wedding weekend.

Those invited to Thursday night’s intimate rehearsal dinner for around 100 of the couple’s closest family members and friends also left with velvet gift boxes embossed with the newlyweds’ intertwined ‘TT’ monogram.

According to Page Six, each box contained a champagne flute adorned with real diamonds, along with a frayed fabric card printed with what appeared to be the garden from Swift and Kelce’s now-famous engagement photos.

Guests also didn’t waste much time sharing details from inside the tightly guarded ceremony itself.

Just hours after the festivities wrapped, AMC CEO Adam Aron posted – before later deleting – an unusually detailed account of the ceremony, describing the couple’s vows as ‘long, entertaining, personal, charming, emotional, irreverent and endearing.’

‘Then the vows. Long, entertaining, personal, charming, emotional, irreverent and endearing explorations by each as to how they met, why they want to be with each other for all eternity, the promises they made in joining their much-beloved two whole families (Kelce’s and Swift’s) as one, and committing to their new mutual life together,’ he wrote.

Aron also revealed the transformed Madison Square Garden was draped in peach and white, while Swift stunned in a white gown with a long veiled train and Kelce wore a white tuxedo before the pair sealed the ceremony with what he described as ‘a sweep you off your feet kiss.’

WASHINGTON, D.C. (DC Bureau) — As the United States approaches its historic 250th birthday, a new landmark on the National Mall is being introduced. This monument is dedicated to acknowledging the influential women who have played a pivotal role in shaping American democracy, ensuring their contributions are honored in the nation’s narrative.

The Women’s Suffrage National Monument will be the inaugural memorial on the National Mall that focuses entirely on the campaign which granted women the right to vote. Advocates highlight this as a significant moment to honor the many women who fought tirelessly to expand the nation’s fundamental commitments to freedom and equality.
