The Analyst: Arsenal’s Interest in 18-Year-Old Moroccan Sensation Ayyoub Bouaddi – His Impact Against Brazil, Competing Suitors, and Areas for Development Before Premier League Debut

0

At 11 p.m. UK time on June 13, the name Ayyoub Bouaddi was largely unknown among football enthusiasts. However, within a mere two hours, he had become a topic of global conversation.

In their opening World Cup match, Morocco held five-time champions Brazil to a 1-1 draw. During his fourth international appearance, Bouaddi dominated the MetLife Stadium, effortlessly eluding Champions League stars Casemiro and Fabinho.

Not yet 19 years old until October, Bouaddi is already causing a stir, leaving Scotland anxious as they prepare to face Morocco on Friday night in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

But what exactly would clubs gain by investing in him? Despite Bouaddi’s dazzling performance against Brazil, he remains a work in progress.

Daily Mail Sport consulted with scouts and agents who have monitored Bouaddi’s development to evaluate his potential impact in the Premier League.

Last season¿s Champions League finalists Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain are keen on Morocco's Ayyoub Bouaddi, who shone against Brazil, but Lille would ask £80million for him

What’s the fuss about?

Bouaddi is so fascinating because in this ultra-physical, ultra-athletic era of Premier League football, he ticks very few of those boxes. He is neither particularly quick nor especially powerful and while he does not lack mobility, he is certainly no ground-eater like many scouting profiles adored by English clubs.

Yet those who have been following him for some time know to overlook this.

‘I remember seeing him at a youth tournament in France in 2022 – he was only 14 but was playing with the Under 17s,’ recalls Oliver Dürr Dehnhardt, head of football strategy at the Eyeball international scouting platform. ‘He was tall, very skinny and really not very fast. All the things that you normally look for physically in a player were not there.

‘But wow, was he good on the ball – and, more remarkably, off the ball. I think he ran about half the distance everyone else did but made up for it by being smarter than them all. It was exceptional.’

Bouaddi showed those qualities against Brazil. Morocco’s game went through him and, as well as touching the ball 87 times, he also recovered it six times.

‘His body composition is not very explosive, but that’s why his brain is so important,’ adds Dehnhardt. ‘Compared to the types of players we see coming through these days, he is rare.’

Who does he compare to?

Though Bouaddi is taller and moves differently, his style is very similar to that of Frenkie de Jong, particularly when the Dutchman made his name in the outstanding Ajax team that reached the Champions League semi-finals in 2019.

Even though Barcelona were willing to sell De Jong several times to ease their financial worries, notably to Manchester United under Erik ten Hag, he stayed and has proved his worth as a key member of Hansi Flick’s squad.

Like the young De Jong, Bouaddi does not have the classic frame of a Premier League midfielder and this is why he might be wiser to move to Spain or France.

To integrate a craftsman like Bouaddi, Arsenal would have to tweak a philosophy that prioritises physical prowess over technical play. The problem is, why do that when Mikel Arteta’s ideas have delivered a Premier League title and a Champions League final? Would Bouaddi play at the base of midfield, with Declan Rice and another player to either side of him? That seems the most logical option.

Arsenal have also been linked with Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, another technical rather than physical central midfielder, suggesting they are not wedded to one style of play.

England should probably hope they do not come up against Morocco later in the tournament as they have often struggled against midfielders like Bouaddi. Andrea Pirlo, Luka Modric and De Jong himself have all outwitted England at previous tournaments.

Who wants him?

As well as Arsenal, Barcelona have been following Bouaddi for years. There are plenty at Camp Nou who see him as the eventual successor to – you guessed it – De Jong. Yet the La Liga champions are forever engaged in financial juggling and Bouaddi may prove too expensive given the host of clubs chasing his signature.

As for PSG, there has long been talk about Vitinha moving to Real Madrid one day and if he were to do so, Bouaddi looks an ideal replacement. As for Chelsea, it is hard to know what their strategy is as the Blues seem to sign players based on age alone, with little thought to how many they are acquiring or where they will play.

When he led Bayer Leverkusen to a domestic double in 2023-24, Xabi Alonso used a 3-4-2-1 system. If he introduces that at Chelsea, it is difficult to see where Bouaddi might fit in at first.

Playing as part of a two-man central pair in the Premier League is tough, even with Moises Caicedo alongside you. Alonso would likely need to adjust his tactics.

Yet Modric is a good example of what can be achieved. Though the Premier League was different then, Modric looked too lightweight when he joined Tottenham in 2008. Within months, he had settled and by the time he joined Real Madrid in 2012, the Croatian was as good as anyone in England.

Similarly, Jorginho was not quite at Modric’s level but in 2021, he was a key man as Chelsea won the Champions League and Italy won Euro 2020.

Where can he improve?

I saw Bouaddi in action for Lille during their Europa League tie against Aston Villa last season – and he did not quite justify the hype.

Though his quality on the ball was evident, Bouaddi seemed to want a fraction of a second too long when he received it. In the second leg at Villa Park, which Unai Emery’s men won 2-0, he was dispossessed four times and won only two of his seven ground duels.

This should not be too much of a worry, though, because intelligent players adapt quickly. After a dozen or so games in England, Bouaddi would adjust to the speed and alter his game accordingly.

‘He needs to work on consistency,’ adds Dehnhardt. ‘He has had multiple top performances in Ligue 1 and in Europe. But sometimes his level drops and as a top midfielder, you can’t do that. But it will come.’

If you judge a midfielder by goals and assists alone, don’t look at Bouaddi. He has yet to score for Lille and has only four assists in three seasons. While those tallies will have to be better, a club would not sign Bouaddi to produce big numbers himself. Instead, he provides the platform for others to improve theirs.

What else do we need to know about him?

As recently as March 30 Bouaddi was French, in footballing terms, and playing for their Under 21s. Some felt he had an outside chance of breaking into their World Cup squad.

Less than three months later, Bouaddi has four caps for Morocco, the country of his parents. This was no impulsive choice, however.

‘There is a massive push from federations like Morocco to connect with eligible top talents from an early age, to convince them to represent them,’ Dehnhardt explains. ‘At Eyeball we see many federations contacting us to help them find players with dual nationality, even from Under-14 level. We even have a package to assist federations with this.

‘Morocco did great work. They developed the relationship early and could offer him a key role at the World Cup, which France could not. When your chance comes, sometimes you have to take it.’

Bouaddi has a wonderful brain for one so young and could adapt to the Premier League if he were given the chance

There is of course a logjam in France’s midfield that Bouaddi did not have to worry about anymore with Morocco. Aurelien Tchouameni, N’Golo Kante, Adrien Rabiot, Warren Zaire-Emery and Eduardo Camavinga would all be ahead of him in the pecking order.

Like many young players in French football, Bouaddi appears as mature off the pitch as he is on it. With Brigitte Macron, the wife of French president Emmanuel Macron, among the audience, the 15-year-old Bouaddi took part in a public speaking contest, offered to players enrolled in French academies. He has excelled at school, particularly in maths.

‘I wanted to carry on my studies because it allows me to make the most of my free time, and learn,’ Bouaddi has said. ‘It enables me to keep my mind alert.’

With a football brain like his, it is no wonder Bouaddi wants to develop it as best he can. The Premier League is ready for him.

Former Child Star Daveigh Chase, Known for ‘Lilo & Stitch’ and ‘The Ring,’ Passes Away at 35

0

LOS ANGELES — Daveigh Chase, the former child star celebrated for her roles in Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch” and the chilling thriller “The Ring,” has passed away at the age of 35.

Her father, John David Schwallier, revealed to The New York Times that Chase succumbed to complications arising from bacterial meningitis and a blood infection. Tragically, she had been experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles, living close to the hospital where she ultimately passed away, Schwallier shared with the newspaper.

The news of her passing was initially reported by TMZ on Wednesday, stating that Chase died on Tuesday.

Chase gained widespread recognition for lending her voice to the character Lilo in the 2002 animated classic, a role she secured at just 8 years old. In a recent development, a Hawaiian actress was selected to portray Lilo in the upcoming live-action adaptation.

For more updates, tune into the ABC7 Los Angeles 24/7 streaming channel featured in the media player above.

For her role as long-haired Samara in the 2002 horror film, Chase won an MTV movie award for best villain.

Chase also voiced another lead in the 2001 animated film “Spirited Away.” She had roles in the 2001 movie “Donnie Darko” and the 2003 show “Oliver Beene,” according to internet movie database IMDb.com.

She was born in Las Vegas and raised in Albany, Oregon. In her small hometown, she began singing and dancing at age 3, according to IMDb.

Chase struggled with drugs since she was 13 years old, Schwallier said in an interview with the Times. He said his daughter was estranged from her parents, who are divorced.

Schwallier said he was in touch with Chase’s boyfriend, and just before she died, arrived at the Los Angeles hospital where she was being treated.

An online fundraiser by her boyfriend raised about $4,000 as of Thursday. “Many people know her as a talented childhood actor from ‘Lilo & Stitch,’ ‘Spirited Away,’ and ‘Donnie Darko,’” the fundraiser post said. “But behind the scenes, she’s faced more than her share of hardship.”

Malia and Sasha Obama Shine Bright at Grand Opening of Barack Obama’s Presidential Library

0

Malia and Sasha Obama captivated attendees with their effortlessly stylish appearances at the opening of their father Barack Obama’s presidential library.

The sisters joined their parents for the inauguration of the expansive new facility in Chicago’s Jackson Park on Thursday morning.

With radiant smiles and a warm wave to the audience, both Malia and Sasha exuded confidence as they took the stage.

Twenty-seven-year-old Malia donned a chic $780 gray suit jacket by St Agni, which featured a plunging neckline. She complemented this look with a leather mini skirt and gray pointed-toe heels.

Meanwhile, 25-year-old Sasha opted for a sophisticated all-white outfit, consisting of an asymmetric short-sleeve top paired with a skirt.

She accessorized with a statement belt that cinched her in at the waist and a pair of $1,320 Miu Miu open-toe heels.

It’s a big day for the Democratic Party – as four previous Presidents and their liberal celebrity friends descended on the event.

Obama’s library is in the city’s south side – where Michelle Obama grew up, and where the couple settled before he entered the White House in 2009.

The campus, which officially opens its doors to the public on Friday, was flooded with prominent political figures as a boatload of festivities kicked off to celebrate the big day.

The Obamas, Bidens, Bushes and Clintons all cozied up together for a group picture ahead of the dedication ceremony.

A-listers also swarmed the event, including John Legend and his wife Chrissy Teigen, former late-night talk show host Stephen Colbert, Oprah Winfrey, Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson, Tyler Perry, Steven Spielberg, and Jill Vedder, among others.

California Governor Gavin Newsom, US Rep. Nancy Pelosi, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, former Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau, Former White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, and more political big names were also in attendance.

Many guests donned dark sunglasses as they shook hands and hugged each other ahead of the start of the ceremony, which started with Jennifer Hudson singing the national anthem.

President Donald Trump was not invited to the event, as the focus was on welcoming Obama supporters, Obama Foundation CEO Valerie Jarrett said, according to NBC News.

Trump is a staunch critic of the Obamas, who has recently slammed him for how he dealt with Iran when he was in office.

He is still welcome to visit the center in the future, she added.

Jarrett, a longtime adviser to the Obamas, made a speech that reflected on her relationship with the couple and their family.

‘They were engaged to be married. Malia and Sasha were a glimmer in their eyes, and they were just beginning their careers.

‘They didn’t know what path their lives would take, but they were both committed to a life of service,’ she told the crowd.

In addition to Hudson, several other singers are expected to take the stage at the star-studded ceremony, including her boyfriend Common, Christina Aguilera, Marc Anthony, John Legend, Bruce Springsteen, Tems, Stevie Wonder, and others.

The Obama Center project plans were made public in May 2017, and originally projected to be completed by 2021.

But the COVID-19 pandemic sparked delays, along with the expansion of the center’s original plans.

The campus itself sits on 19 acres of land, and includes a public park, museum, library, ample green space and an NBA regulation-size basketball court.

Approximately $850 million went into building the center, making it the most expensive presidential library in US history.

Tragic House Fire Claims the Lives of ‘All My Children’ Star Paul Avery and His Wife

Paul Avery, the cherished actor celebrated for his portrayal in the iconic series All My Children, tragically perished alongside his wife, Sheila Avery, in a fatal house fire earlier this week, as reported by several sources.

The New Jersey State Police were alerted to an emergency at the couple’s residence in Blairstown, New Jersey, shortly before 1 a.m. on Tuesday, June 16, according to WFMZ. Upon their arrival, they discovered the house engulfed in flames.

Firefighters located Paul, 81, and Sheila inside, both unconscious, and initiated CPR, but unfortunately, they succumbed to their injuries shortly thereafter, as noted by the Ridge View Echo, a publication established by the late soap opera star.

Authorities are currently investigating the origins of the fire to determine the cause.

All My Children Star Alec Musser s Cause of Death Determined 763

In a related note, the cause of death for All My Children actor Alec Musser was disclosed three days after his unexpected demise. The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office released a report on Tuesday, January 16, stating Musser “died by suicide due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” confirming his death occurred on the preceding Saturday, January […].

Paul and Sheila’s daughter, Kyle Avery, confirmed their deaths via Facebook on Tuesday.

“I’m devastated to share that our parents, Paul and Sheila Garry Avery, passed away early this morning,” the post read. “We loved them so much, and they loved us so much, and nobody ever had to wonder if that was so. We’re grateful to the Blairstown Fire Department for their efforts. Service plans to follow.”

Paul began his acting career in the ‘70s. He appeared as a TV cameraman in the 1978 film Superman and later starred as Hughie, the bartender at Foxy’s, on All My Children in the ‘80s. Kevin Martin, the owner of the glider business Jersey Ridge Soaring at the Blairstown Airport, also reacted to Paul’s death.

“It’s going to take a while to get used to not having him here, because it was almost like, ‘OK, it’s the weekend, we expect to see Paul,’” he told WFMZ. “He was a powered pilot previously, so he held some ratings, and so when he came to gliders, he was pretty much a natural pilot.”

Mike Johnson Urges Secret Service to Strengthen Security Measures

0
US House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson spoke to Fox News on Monday morning for his first television appearance since Saturday's White House Correspondents' Dinner. Johnson did not mince his words, telling Fox host Bill Hemmer, 'We need the leaders of the Secret Service to tighten up.' The Speaker also patted his colleagues on the back, noting 'the House is doing our jobs, Comer has already announced he is having a review with Secret Service.' Pressed by Hemmer on when the Secret Service briefing would be, Johnson did not give an exact time. Johnson also called President Donald Trump the 'most attacked, maligned political figure in history.'

In a bold television debut following the weekend’s dramatic events, U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson appeared on Fox News to discuss the recent White House Correspondents’ Dinner incident. Speaking candidly with host Bill Hemmer, Johnson emphasized the need for the Secret Service to reinforce their security protocols. “We need the leaders of the Secret Service to tighten up,” he asserted, while commending his colleagues for their proactive measures. Johnson highlighted the House’s diligence, referencing Representative James Comer’s initiative to review the situation with the Secret Service, although he refrained from providing a specific timeline for the briefing. He also described former President Donald Trump as “the most attacked, maligned political figure in history.”

Political Calls for Unity After Violent Incident

The top House Republican praised as well the rhetoric from Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman after the attack on the ballroom on Saturday. Johnson additionally noted that it was time to 'unify', stating, 'it’s time for us to come together.' Images showed chaos quickly unfolding on Saturday night, with one picture showing House Speaker Mike Johnson being rushed out of the venue by Secret Service members. Cole Tomas Allen, 31, a teacher from Torrance, California , was seen attempting to bolt past a security checkpoint while armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and several knives on Saturday night.

During the interview, Johnson extended praise to Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman for his rhetoric following the harrowing incident on Saturday, urging for unity in the face of adversity. “It’s time for us to come together,” he declared, emphasizing the need for solidarity. The chaos of the evening was captured in images showing Johnson being swiftly escorted out of the venue by Secret Service agents. The alarming situation unfolded when Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old teacher from Torrance, California, attempted to bypass a security checkpoint armed with a shotgun, handgun, and several knives.

Armed Confrontation Between Suspect and Secret Service

He exchanged fire with Secret Service agents before they tackled him to the ground and arrested him. One agent was struck in his bulletproof vest and is expected to recover. No one else was harmed. The White House Correspondents' Dinner, an annual black-tie gala that brings politicians and journalists together, was barely underway when the Secret Service was forced to leap into action after a series of shots rang out. Trump released surveillance footage of Allen, dressed in all black, sprinting inside the hotel with a gun in hand before he was rushed by armed guards. Journalists in the room captured images of top administration officials getting rushed to safety.

Former President Trump released surveillance footage showing Allen, clad in black, sprinting through the hotel with a gun before being intercepted by armed guards. Journalists present documented the swift evacuation of top administration officials to safety amidst the unfolding turmoil.

Video footage showed Vice President JD Vance being frantically helped off stage by Secret Service agents, as Trump and Melania ducked for cover. Clips then showed several agents reach for the President and quickly pull him to safety. One image showed Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr and his wife, Cheryl Hines, ducking as they ran to safety. Right behind them was Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy Stephen Miller and his wife Katie Miller. After everyone was rushed to safety, the president spoke at a White House press briefing in the West Wing within an hour of the violence.

Four Standing Exercises to Efficiently Reduce Belly Fat Faster Than Traditional Gym Classes for Those Over 60

0

Four Effective Standing Exercises to Combat Belly Fat and Build Muscle After 60

The term “belly pooch” often refers to the softer area of the lower abdomen that becomes more pronounced as we age. Addressing this issue effectively involves improving body composition, enhancing core strength, and maintaining regular movement. Once past the age of 60, this area can become more noticeable due to a combination of reduced muscle tone, decreased physical activity, and a caloric intake that exceeds what the body can burn. To counter this, a strategic plan that encourages energy expenditure, muscle building, and frequent movement is essential.

While gym classes can be highly motivating, standing exercises that can be done at home offer convenience and control. These exercises allow individuals to set their own pace, select appropriate weights, and concentrate on movements that engage multiple muscle groups. Exercises such as dumbbell swings, reverse lunges, step-ups, and walking target the legs, hips, glutes, and core. They also promote the calorie burning necessary for effective fat reduction.

To achieve these fitness goals, it’s crucial to focus on routines that are sustainable and repeatable. Each repetition should be performed with strength and precision, ensuring that movements remain controlled and effective. During exercises like swings, lunges, and step-ups, the core should be actively engaged, providing stability and support. Meanwhile, incorporating regular walking into your routine serves as a low-impact activity that aids in weight loss while being gentle on the joints.

For this type of goal, I’d coach the routine around the effort you can repeat. The reps should feel strong and athletic, but still clean. Your core should brace during each swing, lunge, and step-up, while walking provides a simple daily anchor that supports fat loss without beating up your joints.

Use these four standing exercises to build a routine that feels simple, direct, and useful. Strength moves help build lean muscle and improve core control, while increasing your daily step count adds steady movement that helps your waistline change over time.

Dumbbell Ski Swings

Dumbbell ski swings train your glutes, hamstrings, hips, shoulders, and core while giving your heart rate a strong bump. The hinge pattern asks your hips to drive the movement, and your abs brace to keep your torso strong as the weights swing. This makes ski swings useful for shrinking belly pooch because they combine strength, conditioning, and core control into a single standing exercise. Keep the weights light enough to move smoothly and let your hips create the power.

Muscles Trained: Glutes, hamstrings, shoulders, core, upper back.

How to Do It:

  1. Stand with your feet hip-width apart and hold a dumbbell in each hand.
  2. Brace your core and soften your knees.
  3. Hinge your hips back as the dumbbells swing slightly behind you.
  4. Drive your hips forward to swing the dumbbells up to chest height.
  5. Keep your arms long and your shoulders relaxed.
  6. Return to the hinge position with control.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 10 to 15 reps. Rest for 45 to 60 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Bodyweight hip hinges, kettlebell swings, lighter dumbbell ski swings.

Form Tip: Drive the movement with your hips and keep your core braced through the swing.

If You Can Perform These 4 Single-Leg Exercises Without Wobbling, Your Balance Is Perfect

Goblet Reverse Lunges

Goblet reverse lunges train your glutes, quads, hamstrings, hips, and core while keeping the weight close to your chest. The reverse step provides your legs with a strong, controlled challenge, and the goblet hold engages your abs to keep your torso tall. More muscle involvement means more total effort than small ab-only movements, which supports body-composition changes over time. Use a shorter step if needed and make each rep smooth.

Muscles Trained: Glutes, quadriceps, hamstrings, hips, core.

How to Do It:

  1. Stand tall with your feet hip-width apart.
  2. Hold a dumbbell or kettlebell at your chest.
  3. Brace your core and step one foot back.
  4. Lower your back knee toward the floor with control.
  5. Press through your front foot to return to standing.
  6. Complete all reps, then switch sides.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 8 to 10 reps per leg. Rest for 45 to 60 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Bodyweight reverse lunges, assisted reverse lunges, split squats.

Form Tip: Keep the weight close to your chest and drive through your whole front foot.

Alternating Step-Ups

Alternating step-ups train your quads, glutes, hamstrings, calves, and core while building strength through a movement you use daily. Each step asks one leg to drive your body upward while your midsection maintains your posture. Step-ups fit belly-pooch goals well because they engage large muscles and can quickly raise your heart rate when performed with a steady rhythm. Choose a low, sturdy step and focus on controlled reps.

Muscles Trained: Quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings, calves, core.

How to Do It:

  1. Stand facing a sturdy step, stair, or low box.
  2. Place your whole foot on the step.
  3. Brace your core and keep your chest lifted.
  4. Press through your lead foot to stand tall.
  5. Step back down with control.
  6. Alternate legs with each rep.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 8 to 12 reps per leg. Rest for 45 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Low step-ups, assisted step-ups, slow step-downs.

Form Tip: Let your lead leg lift your body and keep your knee tracking with your toes.

Walking With an Increasing Daily Step Count

Walking is one of the most reliable tools for shrinking the belly pooch because it helps increase daily calorie burn in a way most people can recover from. A higher step count also builds consistency, which matters for body composition after 60. Walking keeps your glutes, calves, hamstrings, hips, and core active while giving your joints a friendly way to move more. Start from your current baseline and add steps gradually so the habit feels doable.

Muscles Trained: Glutes, hamstrings, calves, hips, core.

How to Do It:

  1. Track your current daily step count for a few days.
  2. Add 500 to 1,000 steps per day when you feel ready.
  3. Walk at a pace that makes your breathing slightly heavier.
  4. Keep your posture tall and your arms moving naturally.
  5. Break your steps into shorter walks if that fits your day better.
  6. Build toward a step goal you can repeat consistently.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Aim to gradually increase your daily steps. Add 5 to 10-minute walks after meals or during breaks.

Best Variations: Brisk walking, incline walking, post-meal walks.

Form Tip: Walk with purpose and keep your chest lifted.

How to Shrink Belly Pooch With Standing Exercise

Shrinking belly pooch works best when your plan combines strength training, conditioning, daily walking, and nutrition habits that support fat loss. These exercises help because they use more of your body than isolated ab work. Your legs, glutes, hips, shoulders, and core all contribute, which creates a stronger overall training effect.

  • Use strength moves for lean muscle: Ski swings, reverse lunges, and step-ups train large muscle groups. More muscle involvement helps each workout feel more productive.
  • Brace your core on every rep: Your abs should support your torso during swings, lunges, and step-ups. Better bracing helps your midsection feel stronger as body composition improves.
  • Make walking your daily base: Increasing your step count gives you a simple way to burn more energy without needing another hard workout.
  • Progress at a steady pace: Add reps, increase weight, use a slightly higher step, or add daily steps as the routine becomes easier.
  • Support the work with nutrition: Protein-focused meals, smart portions, and consistent eating habits help your training show up in your body over time.

A smaller belly pooch after 60 comes from repeatable movement and steady strength work. Train the big patterns, walk more often, and let daily consistency move your body composition in the right direction.

From Bear Hugs to Handshakes: India’s Waning Influence with Trump as Pakistan Gains Quiet Momentum

0

This week marked a significant moment on the diplomatic stage as President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met at the G7 summit in France. This encounter, their first since February 2025, was observed with great interest. Unlike the past, when Modi was known for his enthusiastic bear hugs, this meeting began with a cordial smile and a handshake.

On Wednesday, the leaders held a bilateral meeting, characterized by a friendly atmosphere, yet underscored by underlying tensions. This meeting took place amidst India’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its ties with Washington, a task complicated by Pakistan’s expanding diplomatic influence.

Pakistan, India’s long-time adversary, has been broadening its international relationships, adding layers of complexity to India’s diplomatic challenges concerning its nuclear-armed neighbor.

In a related development, President Trump turned his attention to Pakistan, where Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif spoke during the official signing of the first phase of the Gaza ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. Sharif announced his plans to nominate Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for a second time, signaling a noteworthy gesture of diplomatic endorsement. (Credit: Evelyn Hockstein / Reuters)

For years, India built an international case against Pakistan, projecting it as an isolated or destabilizing state. This hardline stance appeared to be working, with Modi declaring to Pakistan, “India has been successful in isolating you, and we will intensify those efforts.”

But a decade later, Pakistan is rapidly emerging as a key global player in the region and beyond.

While Modi initially tried to engage Pakistan, his government’s approach eventually hardened around the mantra that “terror and talks cannot coexist.”

In Washington, India has typically been favored, with Presidents Trump, Biden, Obama and George W. Bush all making visits during their time in office.

Modi built a rapport with Trump during his first term in office and was one of the first world leaders invited to the White House after Trump’s inauguration. But over the past year, that relationship has come under strain as Islamabad quietly clawed its way back to credibility.

“India misjudged Trump in term two, banking on once friendly relations,” Sid Dubey, a visiting professor at Bennett University in India, told News Media. “They have yet to start recovering from that.”

The shift first became apparent in May 2025, when President Trump announced he had secured a ceasefire between nuclear-armed India and Pakistan. The fighting had come over India-administered Kashmir and was the worst in decades.

Islamabad promptly praised Trump for ending the deadly dispute and even nominated him for a Nobel Peace Prize. New Delhi, however, rejected the claim, insisting the ceasefire was the result of direct bilateral talks with Pakistan.

The response reflected India’s long-standing sensitivity to third-party involvement in what it fiercely maintains is a bilateral dispute.

In the months that followed, frictions only deepened.

President Trump hit India with some of the steepest tariffs imposed on any major economy. Meanwhile, U.S. sanctions pressure on Russian oil rattled energy import-dependent India, while disputes over H-1B visas added further strain. Analysts say Trump’s America First agenda increasingly overshadowed the friendship Modi had cultivated during Trump’s first term.

“When Trump unfortunately said the May 2025 clash ended because of him personally, that upset India a lot, and they made that known,” Dubey said. “Then the tariffs were another slap in India’s face. Meanwhile, Pakistan took advantage, leaving India at a bit of a loss. From there, relations fell further with the Iran conflict.”

India is among the countries most indirectly affected by the strategic fallout from the Iran war, facing economic pressure and mounting energy concerns.

Last week, a U.S. strike further exacerbated tensions after three Indian seafarers became collateral damage in the conflict. They were the first and only seafarers confirmed killed as part of the U.S. blockade, sparking outrage across India.

New Delhi instantly summoned Washington’s Chargé d’Affaires Jason Meeks, expressing deep concern over the renewed attacks and arguing that its nationals were becoming casualties in a war not their own.

India also warned of the broader humanitarian, economic, and energy consequences of the conflict, which are expected to linger even as an agreement has now been reached.

All the while, Pakistan was gaining diplomatic visibility, finding itself in the unusual position of currying favor in Washington while maintaining deep ties with China, Iran and the Gulf states.

Pakistan’s prominent role in recent months highlighted how Islamabad has been more nimble in its diplomacy than India,” Council on Foreign Relations Senior Fellow Sadanand Dhume told News Media. “Additionally, Pakistan decisively outmaneuvered India’s quixotic bid to isolate Pakistan on the world stage.”

Regional dynamics have also been reshaped by the two rivals’ competing strategies. India has deepened its strategic partnership with the U.S. through alliances such as the Quad partnership with the U.S., Australia, and Japan and has expanded cooperation across South Asian states, including a burgeoning relationship with Afghanistan. Meanwhile, Pakistan’s growing regional relevance has been reflected in its strengthened ties with China, improved relations with regional partners like Bangladesh and expanded security cooperation with Gulf states.

Additionally, Trump, who accused Pakistan of “deceit and lies” during his first term, has since repeatedly praised its leadership. In June 2025, the president invited Pakistan’s army chief Asim Munir to the White House for a high-profile lunch meeting.

Munir was the first Pakistani military chief who was not also president to be hosted by a U.S. president. He also led the war effort against India earlier that year.

Trump described Munir as his “favorite Field Marshal” and an “exceptional human being.”

Their relationship has been further reflected in trade deals and, most recently, Pakistan’s role as a principal mediator in restoring diplomacy between the U.S. and Iran.

“India tried to make Pakistan an international pariah. Instead, Pakistan has wormed its way into Trump’s good books through a combination of concrete co-operation with the U.S. and outrageous flattery of the president, leading to Trump elevating Field Marshal Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif as heroes,” Dhume said.

India, meanwhile, has maintained close ties with Israel while generally sticking to more measured messaging.

On June 15, upon the agreement of a deal with Iran, Modi released a statement, saying, “India hopes that the implementation of this understanding will help restore peace and stability in the region and ensure the freedom of navigation and commerce.”

“Hats off to Pakistan. They worked really hard to bring this awfully disruptive war with Iran to an end,” Dubey told Fox. “India unfortunately lost out by not seeking to be a problem solver like Pakistan. It could have played its cards better as a peacemaker, given its traditionally strong relations with Tehran.”

Still, analysts caution these are rapidly evolving dynamics. There is no guarantee that Pakistan’s current moment will last, and the tide for India could still turn.

“Pakistan’s mediation role has allowed it to substantially reset its international image. It has positioned itself as a responsible international actor rather than a rogue state responsible for both nuclear proliferation and exporting Islamic terrorism. How long this lasts depends in large measure on two things: will Pakistan find a way to remain in Trump’s good books, and will it be able to change its behavior sufficiently to convince the world that it has indeed turned over a new leaf,” Dhume told News Media.

Meanwhile, India is working to regain its position and show the U.S. it is still a reliable partner.

Marco Rubio visited India last month, his first since becoming Trump’s top diplomat last year, which was widely seen as an attempt to reset ties.

Trump and Modi’s G7 meeting marked another significant step.

Trump praised Modi as “calm, cool and totally killer” and said he would be traveling to India “sometime in the future.” India has been pressing Trump for a visit, potentially as part of a broader meeting involving Japan and Australia.

Trump also said the United States would defend India.

“If anybody attacks that man, we’re going to be there,” Trump said, referring to Modi. “Now, if there’s a new leader, I’m not sure about it.”

The Pakistani and Indian governments did not respond to News Media requests for comment.

Lake Mirror Promenade Revamp: Lakeland Lands Major Funding to Tackle Leaks and Cracks

LAKELAND, Fla. (WFLA) — Among Lakeland’s most iconic structures, the Frances Langford Promenade at Lake Mirror stands out as a defining feature of the city.

A study, costing $80,000, has been commissioned to identify the causes behind water seepage and the formation of cracks on the promenade.

The city’s grant proposal highlights, “The Promenade is Lakeland’s most significant and recognizable landmark, having represented the image of this city for nearly a century.”

Dating back to the 1920s, the Frances Langford Promenade and The Loggia were designed during the era of the “City Beautiful Movement,” becoming integral to Lakeland’s heritage.

“For almost 100 years, the Lake Mirror Promenade has served as a prominent symbol of Lakeland,” remarked Melissa Stoller, the city’s grant writer. “Naturally, historic landmarks begin to show signs of wear with age.”

Stoller explained slowly, over decades, the elements have taken a toll on the structure of the promenade.

It flooded after Hurricane Milton, which Stoller said exacerbated existing problems.

“It’s something that happens slowly over time, where you begin to see cracks and you begin to see exposed rebar where the weather just takes its toll on the masonry over time. It’s just a natural process,” said Stoller.

Stoller worked on an application for funds to study the cause and extent of the damage.

The city secured an $80,000 grant from the U.S. Department of the Interior National Park Service Historic Preservation Fund for a three-phase study.

“It will utilize ground penetrating radar so we can get a better idea of what’s actually happening under the surface,” said Stoller.

The work for the study will take 120 days.

It is unknown when it will begin.

“Lake Mirror is my favorite lake in Lakeland. It’s gorgeous,” said Cathleen Nelson, who lives in Lakeland. “The promenade’s beautiful.”

Nelson has memories of Lake Mirror as a child, involving a one-eyed alligator named Blinky who lived in the water.

She calls the promenade a landmark feature of Lakeland.

“There’s such incredible history in the building of that promenade and so much pride in having it here in Lakeland that I think we’ll definitely make sure it stays,” said Nelson.

In the San Francisco area, Steph Curry’s presence inevitably draws a crowd, and his recent appearance was no exception. The NBA superstar was seen at a Costco in South San Francisco, not far from the airport, where he was promoting his latest venture: Gentleman’s Cut Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey.

A throng of eager Golden State Warriors fans gathered to catch a glimpse of Curry. As he moved through the buzzing crowd, he took a moment to acknowledge them, warmly saying, “I just wanted to say hi to everybody.” His greeting was met with enthusiastic cheers and chants of his name, a testament to his immense popularity.

Curry didn’t just wave and move along; he took the time to engage with the fans. He shook hands and posed for photos, creating memorable moments for those in attendance.

Curry has been involved in every step of the whiskey process since embarking on his new business venture, including manufacturing, blending and aging.

Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is the sixth flavor Gentleman’s Cut has created and is distilled by Game Changer Distillery located in Boone County in Independence, Kentucky.

According to Passion Spirits, Curry created his whiskey as a way to commemorate celebrations.

“I’m proud to have helped carefully craft a new signature Kentucky Straight Bourbon, Gentleman’s Cut. This rich, complex, and bold bourbon is the perfect offering to commemorate life’s great occasions, and will be part of a raised-glass toasting moment in the lives of my fans, friends, and family.”

It appears that the whiskey business will be Curry’s calling whenever he decides to call time on his Hall of Fame basketball career in which he’s been hailed as one of the greatest shooters of all time.

Curry is set to enter the final year of his contract after agreeing to a one-year, $62.6 million extension with the Golden State Warriors that would keep him there until after the 2027 NBA season.

Tragic Discovery: Director William Wyler’s Daughter and Husband Found Dead in Running Vehicle

0

The world bids farewell to Judith Sheldon, daughter of the Oscar-winning filmmaker William Wyler, and her husband, Wylie Sheldon. The couple was discovered lifeless in their vehicle along Interstate 5 near Redding. They were 84 and 86 years old, respectively.

According to a press release issued on June 15 by the California Highway Patrol, the pair was found unresponsive in their Jeep Compass. Judith was positioned behind the wheel of the still-running vehicle, with Wylie seated next to her. Sadly, efforts to revive them were unsuccessful, and they were declared dead at the scene.

“The CHP officer observed the vehicle was running, and the driver and passenger were unresponsive inside,” the report stated. Upon arrival, a second officer, alongside medical personnel, attempted to administer aid to the couple.

While the cause of death is suspected to be medically related, authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident. The loss of Judith and Wylie Sheldon is a poignant reminder of the fragility of life, leaving family and friends in mourning. Their passing marks the end of a significant chapter linked to the legacy of William Wyler, a renowned figure in cinematic history.

The deaths appear to be medically related; however, the circumstances are still under investigation, according to the press release.

“It was the hottest day of the year so far, or second hottest. I’m sure there’s always a possibility that excessive heat played a role,” Lieutenant Josh Smith told SFGate. “But I can’t confirm that without a medical exam.”

An extreme heat warning was issued that day, with temperatures reaching as high as 109 degrees, according to The National Weather Service Sacramento.

Loved ones remembered the couple’s generous support of the art world.

“We are reeling from this news,” San Francisco Silent Film Festival director Anita Monga wrote in an email to Oxygen. “Judy and Wylie were very dear to us, supportive and a positive presence at all our events.”

Judith served as president, then board chair of the organization, and the couple often hosted parties at their San Francisco home.

“I used to joke with her that she was our Frank Sinatra (Chairman of the Board),” wrote Anita. “Judy would allow, actually encourage, our visiting film archivists and musicians to pose for pictures with her father William Wyler’s Oscars. The perfect hosts.”
