National Guardsman’s Shocking Guilty Plea Unveils Deadly Love Triangle

0

A former soldier from the U.S. Army National Guard has admitted to the fatal shooting of an Army soldier, a crime sparked by a heated confrontation upon discovering the man with his former partner, who is also the mother of his child.

Natravien R. Landry, aged 27, entered a guilty plea on June 11 to charges of second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in connection with a violent crime. This plea pertains to the tragic death of U.S. Army Sgt. Andre S. Stewart Jr. at the military installation formerly known as Fort Eisenhower, now Fort Gordon, located in Augusta, Georgia. Prosecutors have indicated that Landry could face a prison sentence ranging from a minimum of 10 years to life in federal prison.

The incident took place on the morning of December 14, 2024, within an apartment complex situated on the military base.

The events unfolded when Landry, who was assigned to drill duty that morning, took a break and decided to visit the residence of his former girlfriend. According to court documents, it was during this visit that the encounter turned deadly.

Landry’s admission to the crime of second-degree murder underscores the gravity of the situation, highlighting the tragic outcome of a personal conflict that escalated beyond control. (Meriwether County Sheriff’s Office)

A witness told authorities that Landry noticed a black truck parked in front of the apartment and asked who owned the vehicle.

Suspecting another man was at the residence, Landry barged inside the apartment and upstairs to a bedroom where he found Stewart, who was dating the woman at the time, according to federal prosecutors.

The woman said they were sleeping when she heard a commotion. Two children were also present at the time of the incident.

Landry, who was aware Stewart was unarmed, shot him once in the chest. Stewart was later pronounced dead.

After the shooting, Landry fled the residence and the military base, but he was later arrested during a traffic stop on Interstate 85 by the Meriwether County Sheriff’s Office.

He threw the gun out of the window, but it was later found by deputies. Testing proved that the recovered handgun was used in the shooting.

Landry later admitted to the shooting in a Mirandized interview.

The woman told investigators that Landry was jealous of Stewart.

Stewart’s sister wrote shortly after the incident that her brother was “viciously murdered.” She said he left behind a 5-year-old son who was one of the children in the apartment at the time of the shooting.

Landry’s sentencing date has not yet been set.

Japan Sets a Gold Standard: Fans Leave Stadium Spotless After World Cup Draw

0

Once again, Japanese football fans have garnered praise for their commitment to cleanliness, arriving in Dallas with bin bags in hand for their team’s World Cup opener.

The Samurai Blue kicked off their tournament at the AT&T Stadium on Sunday, where they faced the Netherlands amidst scorching Texas temperatures exceeding 40°C.

The match remained tense until Dutch captain Virgil van Dijk broke the deadlock after halftime, but Japan quickly leveled the score with a swift shot from Keito Nakamura.

However, the Netherlands soon regained their lead as Crysencio Summerville curled a shot into the bottom corner of the net, putting them back in front.

It seemed that Summerville’s strike would secure the victory for the Dutch, but with only minutes remaining, Japan salvaged a point thanks to a powerful header from Koki Ogawa, which deflected off Daichi Kamada.

It marked an impressive start to the Asian nation’s eighth World Cup – though it’s not just the football which Japan have earned praise for.

Having travelled 6,000 miles to Dallas, the Japanese arrived in Texas armed with hundreds of bin bags, and many selfless supporters stayed long after the final whistle to clean up rubbish.

Images released before the game showed scores of fans marching the streets of the American city before parading their bags around the stadium as the players warmed up.

Football fans took to social media post-match to praise the Japanese, who they dubbed ‘classy’ and ‘respectful’.

One wrote: ‘Class will always be permanent. No matter what the scoreline is on the pitch, Japan fans win off it every single tournament. Huge respect.’

While another penned: ‘They have so much class it’s rare to see a country that always stay out of trouble and show love.’

One more simply posted: ‘Take me to Japan. Mad level of discipline.’

However the Japanese don’t reserve their ritual for only the biggest occasions.

Back in March, supporters were hailed as ‘selfless’ and ‘respectful’ after staying for nearly an hour after an international friendly against England to clean up any mess left behind.

Should other football fans learn from Japan’s example and clean up after matches themselves?

Videos and images showed scores of visiting supporters trawling through the stands at Wembley Stadium and picking up coffee cups, crisp packets and sweet wrappers.

It earned the supporters the praise of Wembley’s official social media page, which simply posted: ‘Thank you’.

And at the last World Cup finals four years ago in Qatar, the Japanese were commended after staying late to clean up following a landmark 2-1 victory over Germany.

After their 2-1 win over Colombia at the 2018 tournament in Russia, fans also ensured they left no mess behind before leaving the Mordovia Arena in Saransk.

That move at the 2018 tournament seemed to spark a trend, with Senegalese fans later seen tidying up following their win over Poland.

Japan’s players have also earned praise for leaving changing rooms in a spotless state.

While fans were cleaning the stands after the win over Germany, the team also left their dressing room in pristine condition – even leaving behind origami swans with a thank you note in Japanese and Arabic.

In Japan, cleanliness forms a huge part of the culture and is instilled in people from an early age.

Scott North, a professor of sociology at Osaka University, told the BBC in 2018 that tidying is a way of ‘demonstrating pride in the Japanese way of life’.

‘It’s not just part of the football culture but part of Japanese culture,’ he said. ‘You often hear people say that football is a reflection of culture. An important aspect of Japanese society is making sure that everything is absolutely clean and that’s the case in all sporting events and certainly also in football.

‘Cleaning up after football matches is an extension of basic behaviours that are taught in school, where the children clean their school classrooms and hallways,’ he added.

‘With constant reminders throughout childhood, these behaviours become habits for much of the population.’

Tim Ream Defies Age as Oldest USMNT World Cup Player, Proving His Skills on the Global Stage

0

LOS ANGELES — For most soccer athletes, the 38th birthday marks a farewell to the field.

Tim Ream, however, defies this norm.

On Friday, as Team USA took to the pitch at SoFi Stadium, the captain’s armband was donned by Ream, a seasoned player with nearly 20 years of professional experience.

At the age of 38 years and 250 days, Ream made history as the oldest player to represent the United States in a FIFA World Cup match. Yet, while this milestone is noteworthy, what transpired afterward was even more extraordinary.

Ream’s inclusion in the starting lineup was no mere formality. It wasn’t a token gesture honoring a veteran’s legacy before he bows out of the sport.

The veteran center back can still play at a high level, and despite being a few months shy of his 39th birthday, he delivered one of the finest performances in our country’s history.

Ream, a former New York Red Bull, completed 23 line-breaking passes during the United States’ 4-1 victory over Paraguay.

It was eight more than any player at the tournament so far, and the most by a defender in a World Cup match since Ghana’s John Paintsil in 2010.

Ream’s passes against Paraguay were ambitious. Twenty of his 91 attempted passes ended in the final third. That’s part of the reason U.S. head coach Mauricio Pochettino selected Ream as the captain. He’s not just a vocal leader, but he’s one of the best on the roster at distributing the ball.

Ream split Paraguay’s defensive shape with passes that turned defense into attack instantly. The result was four goals, the most in U.S. World Cup history.

Four years ago, Ream believed Qatar was his last World Cup with the U.S. squad. At the time, he was anchoring Fulham’s defense in the English Premier League and serving as the elder statesman on a squad of young American players led by then-captain Tyler Adams.

Young players gravitated toward him because of his professionalism, honesty and steady presence. Players praised his calmness on the pitch. When Pochettino was appointed manager in 2024, he preached a simple message: Representing your country should feel like the highest honor a player can have. Every time you take the field wearing the USA crest, it should feel like a World Cup final.

Few players embraced that philosophy more than Ream.

Slowly, almost organically, he became the extension of Pochettino’s voice inside the locker room.

“He’s a great professional,” Pochettino said. “He’s 38. He’s really fit. He’s committed. And his experience is massive playing over 10 years in Europe. When he plays, he’s a leader on the field, and if he doesn’t play I feel like he’s still on the field.”

That’s what separates Ream from past captains. His leadership is not attached to playing time.

“This is more than a dream come true,” Ream said. “I’ve done everything possible to be a part of this group, to help this group along.”

There may be younger and faster defenders in the U.S. pool, but few have Ream’s experience.

Now that the World Cup is back on home soil for the first time in 32 years, there are tremendous pressure and expectations on Team USA. Ream, a native of St. Louis, embraces it. In their first match, he looked like the player most comfortable carrying the weight of the moment.

If the Americans are going to make history this summer, they’re going to need Ream to lead the way and prove that age is just another number written on the roster sheet.

Federal Agencies Conduct Raids on Over 20 Minneapolis Businesses Amid Fraud Investigation, Including Somali Learning Center

0

In a sweeping crackdown on fraudulent activities, federal agents have stormed over 20 establishments in Minneapolis, one of which is a Somali learning center that gained viral attention due to a comically misspelled sign.

Homeland Security Investigations revealed that their agents, in collaboration with state and local law enforcement, participated in the operation spanning Minneapolis and St. Paul. A significant number of targeted businesses are reportedly owned by members of the Somali community, as reported by Fox News.

“The American public has a right to know how their tax dollars were misused,” a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson shared with the Daily Mail. “HSI, together with our law enforcement partners, executed criminal search warrants in Minneapolis, addressing the extensive misuse of U.S. taxpayer funds. We are committed to leaving no stone unturned.”

Despite these federal actions, the City of Minneapolis refuted claims that the Minneapolis Police Department had been asked to partake in the execution of these federal warrants.

“The City of Minneapolis is not involved in the federal operations being reported across Minnesota today, and as of 9:30 am, MPD has not been requested to aid in the execution of federal warrants,” stated the city in an official release.

‘We understand that any federal actions in our neighborhoods may spark fear among residents, and we will continue to marshal city resources to help the community in the aftermath of Operation Metro Surge.’

Sources told Fox News that around 22 businesses were raided, including the Quality Learning Center, which went viral for a misspelled sign amid allegations of fraud among Somali-owned daycares in the area.

The center gained nationwide attention in December when conservative YouTuber Nick Shirley shared a viral video accusing the daycare of receiving public funds without providing a service.

Shirley’s video prompted a wave of allegations against other Somali-owned daycares in Minneapolis and caught the attention of federal agents.

The daycare center denied the allegations at the time, but closed in January pending a license review, according to the Minnesota Department of Human Services.

Local CNN affiliate KARE reported that the raids targeted businesses that received Medicaid, primarily child and daycare providers.

Sources told KARE that the raids were not linked to federal immigration enforcement operations.

A CBS News crew also reported federal agents at the Mini Childcare Center, another location featured in Shirley’s video. The raid did not lead to any arrests, according to CBS.

The Daily Mail has reached out to the Department of Justice for more information on the raid.

The raid comes months after Operation Metro Surge, a federal immigration crackdown across the Twin Cities that resulted in around 4,000 arrests and two fatal shootings by immigration officers of US citizens.

The Department of Homeland Security later dubbed the operation the ‘largest immigration enforcement operation ever.’

The Twin Cities are home to the US’s largest Somali community. President Donald Trump said Somalis were ‘completely taking over’ Minnesota and accused the community of widespread fraud, which prompted the massive, unprecedented immigration enforcement operation.

The state was already under a microscope for fraudulent activity following the Feeding Our Future scandal.

The Minnesota-based nonprofit had received $244 million from federal nutrition programs to feed low-income chidlren and senior citizens between 2018 and 2021.

Feeding Our Future received an influx of federal funds during the Covid-19 pandemic when the US Department of Agriculture waived some regulations for nutrition programs.

Prosecutors found that the nonprofit had been using the funds for personal use, and over 63 individuals connected to Feeding Our Future were convicted on fraudulent charges, many of whom were of Somali descent.

The raid comes just months after federal law enforcement agents descended on the Twin Cities during Operation Metro Surge, which led to 4,000 arrests. Federal agents are pictured above in Minneapolis on January 24

The founder and ringleader of the scheme, however, was a white woman named Aimee Bock.

After Minnesota Governor Tim Walz was named as Kamala Harris’ running mate in 2024, Republicans accused him of allowing widespread fraud in the state.

Walz created a new centralized fraud investigation unit last January in response to the allegations; however, the state continued to be a magnet for fraud allegations from the Trump administration.

First Assistant US Attorney Joe Thompson announced in December that federal authorities estimated that fraud in Minnesota Medicaid programs may have cost taxpayers as much as $9 billion since 2018.

Shortly after the announcement, Shirley shared an ‘investigation’ on widespread fraud allegations against Minnesota-based daycare centers that receive federal funding.

Shirley visited several daycare centers in the area, many of which were owned or operated by members of the Somali community.

He went to the centers unannounced in the middle of the day and alleged that they were receiving federal aid without providing services.

The video was amplified by several high-profile figures, including Elon Musk, Vice President JD Vance, and then-Attorney General Pam Bondi.

Trump froze federal funds to Minnesota in response to the video, but Shirley’s allegations remain unconfirmed.

Three daycares featured in the video sued the state of Minnesota in February, claiming they were unfairly punished.

Alec Baldwin Imparts Key Life Lesson to His Eight Children

Alec Baldwin has a meaningful objective for his children that he believes is achievable.

The actor known for his role in Mission: Impossible–Rogue Nation recently expressed the significant lesson he aims to impart to his children with wife Hilaria Baldwin: Carmen, 12, Rafael, 10, Leonardo, 9, Romeo, 8, Eduardo, 5, Maria Lucia, 5, and Ilaria, 3.

In an exclusive interview with E! News at the premiere of the documentary Gaslit on June 12, Alec shared, “I want my kids to grow up having hope, because right now it’s more hopeless than I’ve ever seen.”

The politically active actor, who also has a 30-year-old daughter, Ireland, with former spouse Kim Basinger, elaborated, “We must continue the fight to show our children that it’s important to persevere. They need to have hope and work towards taking control away from those who might misuse their power, ensuring it is handled responsibly.”

On a lighter note, Alec, now 68, humorously mentioned that he once had different aspirations for his children.

Trump Celebrates Birthday with Notable Appearance at White House UFC Event

0

The birthday celebrations kicked off at UFC Freedom 250 with a special guest appearance.

Former President Donald Trump received a grand welcome on the South Lawn of the White House on Sunday, joining promoter Dana White as they arrived to the sound of trumpets. The event featured a performance by the Zac Brown Band singing “The Star-Spangled Banner,” followed by a dramatic 12-jet flyover as AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck” played in the background. This spectacle came despite earlier concerns about adverse weather conditions.

Washington D.C. was bustling with thousands of fight enthusiasts and protesters alike, all gathered for the UFC Freedom 250 event held at the White House. Despite the looming threat of lightning and thunderstorms, officials ultimately decided to move forward with the event.

The possibility of a weather-related delay seemed to be a sensitive topic for the White House. Earlier on Sunday, a report from the Weather Channel sparked a strong reaction from an administration spokesperson after predicting rain, strong winds, and mosquitoes on the White House lawn.

In response, the White House’s @RapidResponse47 account issued a fiery post on social media platform X, stating, “This event is about celebrating America’s unmatched greatness after 250 years — which apparently doesn’t sit well with the friendless loser who wrote this bulls*** clickbait headline. Rain or shine, we’re celebrating our great country no matter what. GOD BLESS AMERICA!”

For his part, White has shared the same belief that Sunday’s show will proceed regardless of the weather in Washington.

Trump’s middle son Eric shared a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the distinct setting for Sunday night’s fight festivities earlier in the day. From the roof of the White House, the 42-year-old showed aerial view of the newly constructed arena underneath ‘The Claw,’ a spaceship-like metal arch fitted with lighting, sound equipment and large screens.

To the side, cranes loomed over the White House as part of the construction for the new East Wing ballroom.

Meanwhile, outside the White House, angry protestors are attacking Trump over his immigration policy, allegations of corruption, and the war with Iran, which the President once again claimed to have ended on Sunday.

‘Congratulations to all!’ he wrote on social media, without providing details about the deal to open the Strait of Hormuz. He added, ‘Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow!’

The protestors aren’t the only unwelcome guests the event.

MMA fighter Sean Strickland was escorted out of a UFC Freedom 250 by US Secret Service and other law enforcement after his mocking comments about Trump and Jeffrey Epstein.

Strickland claimed earlier this month that he had been banned over his comments about Trump’s connections to the convicted sex offender and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

However, the former UFC champion defied that ban on Sunday when he attended the Fan Fest at the nearby Ellipse in Washington DC.

His shock appearance received a frosty reception from the MAGA-loyal MMA fans in attendance who stormed towards the ring where he stood, immediately jeering and booing.

Strickland was then kicked out of the event, escorted away by Secret Service agents to chants of ‘USA’ from the crowd.

‘UFC at the White House with [Netanyahu] in the audience. Straight slop,’ Strickland, the MMA promotion’s undisputed middleweight champion wrote on Instagram last week.

To celebrate Trump’s 80th birthday and the country’s 250th, White’s UFC claims to have spent $60 million on this weekend’s festivities, which the President billed as ‘the greatest show on earth.’

UFC fans and patriots alike jumped at the chance to claim some real estate at the Ellipse as they arrived at the promotion’s fan fest hours before the fighters were slated to take to the Octagon on the South Lawn.

Of course, Trump will take center stage on the South Lawn, where the birthday boy will toasted by cabinet officials like transportation secretary Sean P. Duffy, White House insiders such as Stephen Miller, as well as Republican lawmakers, including House Speaker Mike Johnson. Even Poland’s right-wing President Karol Nawrocki is on hand amid a political stalemate with the country’s pro-European Prime Minister, Donald Tusk.

Most noticeably, though, will be the 4,000-plus fight fans screaming themselves hoarse on the South Lawn. And all of this will take place in a temporary, newly constructed arena under ‘The Claw,’ a spaceship-like metal arch fitted with lighting, sound equipment and large screens.

As for the thousands waiting in line hours before the opening fight, they were will be watching on big screens from the nearby Ellipse.

‘This event is a one of one event, incredible event. I love it,’ White, a close friend of the President, during a Friday night hype session at the Lincoln Memorial.

There will be two title fights taking place on Paramount’s premium streaming service, Paramount+: Brazil’s Alex Pereira against France’s Ciryl Gane for the interim UFC heavyweight title and Spanish-Georgian lightweight champion Ilia Topuria against interim champ, American Justin Gaethje.

The night’s other bouts include recent challengers Michael Chandler, Derrick Lewis and former 135-pound champion Sean O’Malley.

The bout represents another in the long history between White and Trump, who began hosting the MMA promotion’s events at the since-shuttered Trump Taj Mahal back in 2001.

Since then, White has introduced Trump at three separate Republican National Conventions and was even present at the recent White House Correspondents’ Association dinner that was interrupted by an attempted assassin.

Many UFC fighters have professed their love and admiration for Trump, including Jon Jones, Colby Covington, Conor McGregor and Gaethje.

Truth Unveiled: Beckham Family Addresses Allegations of Staged Harper-Brooklyn Reunion

David and Victoria Beckham have refuted claims made by their son Brooklyn, suggesting his younger sister Harper’s recent surprise visit to his Los Angeles home was orchestrated, a new report reveals.

A source close to the family contradicted Brooklyn’s representative’s earlier statements, asserting to the Sun that such claims were “utterly baseless” in a piece released on Sunday.

Representatives for both Brooklyn and his wife Nicola, along with David and Victoria Beckham, have yet to respond to inquiries from Page Six.

Page Six disclosed exclusively on Friday that 14-year-old Harper was seen visiting her brother’s LA residence—where he resides with Nicola Peltz—shortly after celebrating her father’s induction on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Regrettably, her visit was in vain, as insiders reported that Harper departed almost immediately without having the chance to meet Brooklyn.

The insider added that Brooklyn and his wife were unavailable. Brooklyn later shared via his Instagram Stories that he was in New York at the time of his sister’s appearance.

Still, a rep for the couple told Page Six, “That photographers were in place as the letter was hand delivered says it all — this was choreographed for the cameras.”

Harper’s visit comes months after the 27-year-old chef declared he does not “want to reconcile with my family” in a bombshell social media statement, claiming his mother allegedly hijacked his first dance with Nicolaat their 2022 wedding and “controlled narratives in the press” about the famous family.

“I’m not being controlled, I’m standing up for myself for the first time in my life,” he said at the time.

“For my entire life, my parents have controlled narratives in the press about our family [with] performative social media posts, family events and inauthentic relationships. … Recently, I have seen with my own eyes the lengths that they’ll go through to place countless lies in the media, mostly at the expense of innocent people, to preserve their own facade.”

Given Brooklyn’s statement, it comes as no shock that he also declined to attend his dad’s Walk of Fame ceremony.

In fact, a source told Page Six earlier this month that it was never in the cards for the hot sauce entrepreneur.

“Even if he did want to see them at the Walk of Fame, Nicola would not take too kindly to it,” the insider told Page Six.

Another source said, “Two things can be true; Nicola can be difficult and Brooklyn does not want to see his parents.”

Calumet City Faces New Challenges: Saturday Night Storms Compound Tornado Recovery Efforts in Chicago Area

0

Residents across the Chicago area awoke to a grim scene on Sunday morning, as overnight storms left a trail of destruction in their wake. The powerful weather system, which swept through the southern and southwestern suburbs, was responsible for extensive property damage, power outages affecting thousands, and the hospitalization of a woman after a tree fell onto her home.

The recent weather events add to an already tumultuous period marked by severe conditions. Over the past few days, the region has faced a barrage of storms, including an alarming count of 13 tornadoes confirmed by the National Weather Service.

The series of tornadoes and storms have not only disrupted daily life but have also prompted concerns about safety and the readiness of emergency services in handling such widespread damage. As the community begins the challenging process of recovery, local authorities and residents are assessing the impact and planning the next steps to rebuild and restore normalcy.

13 tornadoes rated by NWS so far:

  • Merrillville, Indiana: EF-2

  • Hickory Hills, Illinois to near Midway Airport: EF-2

  • Dwight, Illinois area: EF-1

  • Naperville, Illinois to Lisle, Illinois: EF-0

  • Cedar Lake, Indiana: EF-0

  • Schneider, Indiana to Hebron, Indiana area: EF-0

  • Wateska, Illinois to near Rensselaer, Indiana: EF-0

  • Wateska, Illinois to near Rensselaer, Indiana: EF-0

The National Weather Service has also conducted surveys of damage for additional tornadoes just outside the Chicago area, for a total of about 20 tornadoes.

A 29-year-old woman remained hospitalized at Christ Hospital after a large maple tree fell onto the Calumet City home she shares with her mother in the city’s 6th Ward. Neighbors said emergency responders had to work to rescue her from the damaged house.

“The paramedics had to use like a jaws of life to extract her from the home. But when the tree fell it also severed the gas line, so the gas was super loud. You could here it and you could smell it,” said Calumet City resident Brian Holiday.

Across the neighborhood, the storm toppled trees and damaged property. At least three vehicles were destroyed by falling trees, including a GMC Sprinter van whose owner was out of town and attempting to sell it.

“He’s not going to be happy. And at least no one is hurt and the tree didn’t fall this way,” said his sister, Stormy Lucas.

As residents began cleaning up debris, city officials said municipal crews would take an active role in removing storm damage, even when it affected private property.

“I’ve directed all of my staff. Even if it’s on someone’s personal property to remove that. You’re not going to have them remove that we’re going to do that ourselves,” said Calumet City Mayor Thadeus Jones.

The storms also caused significant power outages across the region. Officials said an additional 9,000 customers lost electricity overnight, adding to more than 13,000 who remained without power from last week’s severe weather.

ComEd established a staging area in southwest suburban Burbank as crews worked to repair the latest round of damage. The hardest-hit areas included several south and southwest suburban communities.

“The Burbank, justice, hickory hills area saw a lot of damage. The Palos Heights, Alsip, Crestwood areas also saw a lot of damage,” said Jeremy Smyth, vice president of distribution operations for ComEd.

Utility officials said they hoped to restore service to most affected customers by late Sunday, though recovery efforts were ongoing as crews continued to assess and repair infrastructure damaged in the storms.

As of 6:30 p.m. Sunday, ComEd said it had restored power for 99% of customers affected by the severe weather event.

Tragic Skydiving Plane Crash Claims 12 Lives in the U.S.

0

IN BRIEF

  • A pilot and 11 passengers have died after their skydiving plane crashed near Butler, Missouri.
  • Authorities haven’t confirmed the cause of the crash but believe the plane lost power and attempted landing.

A tragic plane crash in Missouri has claimed the lives of a pilot and 11 passengers, all of whom were on board for a skydiving excursion, according to local authorities.

The accident happened near Butler Memorial Airport in Butler, a small town with a population of approximately 4,300 residents, located about 105 kilometers south of Kansas City.

Sergeant Justin Ewing of the Missouri Highway Patrol reported that the aircraft was transporting individuals for a planned skydiving activity.

Emergency services received an alert about the downed aircraft, which was enveloped in flames, around 11:30 a.m. local time on Sunday (2:30 a.m. Monday AEST), Ewing stated.

“The plane crashed in a field adjacent to the airport,” Ewing noted, adding that authorities have closed off the nearby roadway as a precautionary measure.

A heap of blue and silver mangled metal lies in the grass near the airport with a massive line-up of emergency vehicles on the street beside it.

Teams from the National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration were en route to the crash site Sunday afternoon to investigate.

The private plane was operated by Skydive Kansas City, said Dennis Jacobs, the acting airport manager and Bates County Emergency Management Agency director.

“It had just taken off and made a left turn” before the crash, Jacobs said.

“In my opinion, I think it was losing power, and he was trying to make it over to the highway and land, and he stalled and went down nose first and caught fire.”

Emergency responders were able to put out the fire shortly after the crash, Jacobs said, calling the scene “brutal”.

First responders have checked the area under the flight path and did not find anyone who might have tried to jump out before the crash, Jacobs said.

It’s not yet known which factors may have contributed to or caused the crash, Ewing said.

Aviation safety expert Jeff Guzzetti said that poor maintenance has been a factor in some previous skydiving plane crashes because these companies are not held to a high standard under Federal Aviation Administration rules.

Guzzetti said skydiving companies are governed by the same rules any private plane owner has to follow and not the more stringent rules that charter flight operators and airlines adhere to.

Rattlesnake Incident at Preschool: Child Discovers Snake in Playhouse, Prompting Swift Response

0

California is currently facing an alarming rise in rattlesnake encounters and fatalities, described by experts as historically unprecedented. In what could have been a dire situation, a vigilant preschooler in the Santa Clarita Valley potentially averted another tragedy by spotting a venomous serpent lurking in a playground installation.

This near-miss occurred around 4:30 p.m. on Thursday at a preschool located in the Saugus area of Santa Clarita. A child noticed the dangerous snake within a playhouse and promptly informed a teacher, according to local rattlesnake expert Cary Quashen, who spoke with KTLA.

In response, the school staff reached out to Quashen, who arrived at the scene to expertly handle and remove the snake, ensuring no harm came to anyone.

Footage shared by Quashen captures the tense moment, showing the rattlesnake coiled near the playground structure as he deftly uses specialized tools to secure it.

“Thankfully, everything turned out well,” Quashen remarked in a social media post that accompanied the video clip.

Quashen, who operates a rattlesnake removal service and dog-training program in Santa Clarita, said he was called in to ensure the area was safe and that no children had been bitten.

He later relocated the snake away from the school.

No injuries were reported.

However, the incident comes amid an alarming year for rattlesnake encounters in California.

During the first three months of 2026, the state recorded 77 rattlesnake-related calls and three confirmed deaths, a dramatic increase over California’s typical annual average of zero to one fatality.

Medical directors and herpetologists with the California Poison Control System have described the 2026 figures as “highly unusual and deeply concerning.”

Experts say the early-year numbers are exceptionally high and historically unprecedented for the state.

Quashen has become known as the unofficial “snake wrangler of Santa Clarita” after years of sharing videos documenting rattlesnake removals throughout the area.

Anyone who encounters a rattlesnake should keep a safe distance, avoid any attempt to handle the animal, and contact trained wildlife professionals if removal is necessary.
