OG Anunoby’s Game-Saving Block Halts Knicks’ Comeback After De’Aaron Fox’s Crucial Error

0

OG Anunoby’s dramatic last-second tip-in may capture the spotlight, but it was his crucial defensive move moments before that set the stage for an epic NBA Finals Game 4 comeback.

On Wednesday night, the Knicks found themselves down by a single point with just 16.1 seconds remaining. Jalen Brunson’s missed two-point attempt sent the ball spiraling into the backcourt, where it was snatched up by the Spurs’ De’Aaron Fox, seemingly poised for a straightforward dunk or layup.

However, Anunoby’s relentless defense came through once again as he managed to block Fox’s attempt, preventing what would have been an easy score and returning possession to the Knicks.

Fox had the chance to run down the clock and force the Knicks to foul, but opted instead for an immediate shot—a decision that ultimately backfired.

Fox could have held onto the ball and killed some of the clock to force the Knicks into a foul, but he instead went for the immediate shot that obviously didn’t work out.

On the “Inside the NBA” postgame show, Charles Barkley called the decision for Fox to go for the layup “bonehead.”

“That was a dumbass play,” Barkley said. “He did not have to shoot that ball.”

After the Knicks set up on the next possession — following a Fox foul at midcourt and a timeout — Brunson’s miss set up Anunoby for the winning tip-in for the 107-106 victory, putting the Knicks one win away from their first championship since 1973.

BCK readers will also want to keep an eye out for Mykal-Michelle Harris, who voices Blaze, an independent 8-year-old animal lover.

Krys Marshall also joins the cast as Blaze’s mom, a character navigating the growing influence of technology in her child’s life.

Will Woody, Buzz, and the gang be able to compete with tablets and technology, or is playtime about to change forever?

Colombian Politicians Call for Gustavo Petro’s Suspension Amid Election Interference Accusations Against Trump Critic

0

In a move that has captured national attention, Colombian lawmakers are currently deliberating a proposal that could see President Gustavo Petro temporarily removed from office. This consideration comes amidst an investigation into accusations that the president may have unduly influenced the country’s presidential election.

On Wednesday, Gloria Arizabaleta, who serves as the president of Colombia’s Commission of Investigation and Accusation, put forward a motion aimed at suspending President Petro until June 21. This proposal was articulated in a document released by the commission, highlighting the gravity of the allegations against him.

The investigation centers on claims that President Petro participated in political interference during the election campaign. The allegations describe his conduct as “extremely serious or serious,” suggesting significant breaches of electoral integrity.

President Petro, whose term is slated to conclude in August, is accused of playing a role in the campaign of Ivan Cepeda, a leftist candidate aligned with Petro’s Pacto Historico coalition. The accusations have stirred a considerable political storm in Colombia, casting shadows over Petro’s final months in office.

Cepeda is scheduled to face conservative attorney Abelardo De La Espriella in a June 21 runoff election.

The race is being closely watched in Washington because Colombia remains one of the United States’ closest security partners in Latin America and a key ally in counternarcotics efforts. The country has long been central to U.S.-backed efforts to combat drug trafficking and organized crime throughout the region.

The suspension proposal faces significant hurdles before it can take effect. Lawmakers and legal experts said the measure would first need approval from all 16 members of the Commission of Investigation and Accusation before advancing to Colombia’s Senate for further consideration.

“President Gustavo Petro has not been suspended; he remains in office,” commission member Miguel Silvera Padilla said in a video statement, according to Reuters.

The Commission of Investigation and Accusation, which operates within Colombia’s lower house of Congress, is responsible for reviewing complaints and potential criminal or disciplinary charges against high-ranking government officials.

Petro has repeatedly faced scrutiny from political opponents during his presidency, though the latest proposal comes less than two weeks before Colombians head to the polls to choose his successor.

The runoff election between Cepeda and De La Espriella is expected to help determine whether voters continue Petro’s leftist political project or shift toward a more conservative approach to security and governance.

Representatives for Petro did not immediately respond to a request for comment from News Media.

New Water Pipeline Project Launches to Connect Montgomery, Oswego, and Yorkville to Lake Michigan

0

In the west suburbs of Oswego, Illinois, a wave of optimism is flowing through the community as a groundbreaking new water project takes shape. Local leaders have embarked on an ambitious venture to secure a sustainable water supply for the region, a move that promises to impact the area for generations to come.

For over ten years, meticulous planning has paved the way for this monumental infrastructure project. On Wednesday, the anticipation culminated in the official commencement of construction, marking a significant milestone in the community’s quest for water security. The stakes are high, as the current water source is projected to deplete by 2050, threatening the livelihoods of nearly 90,000 families.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

Although the shift to a new water system will result in increased water rates, residents overwhelmingly agree that the benefits outweigh the costs. The prospect of accessing clean water from Lake Michigan is a compelling incentive, one that ensures a stable and reliable water supply for the future.

This ambitious Waterlink project, a $400 million endeavor, involves extending a 30-mile transmission main to channel Lake Michigan’s water to the towns of Montgomery, Oswego, and Yorkville. This initiative comes at a crucial juncture, as officials warn of the impending depletion of the current aquifer, a situation that underscores the urgency of the project.

The community’s commitment to securing a sustainable water source reflects a proactive approach to environmental stewardship and resource management, setting a precedent for other regions facing similar challenges.

“This is the single most important investment or decision that any of us will ever make in elected office,” Montgomery Village President Matt Brolley said.

Community leaders say that new system will likely double the current water rates residents pay. But for those thinking about the next generation, clean water is priceless.

“We’re going to live here for 20, 30 years, and our kids are going to grow up here. And you know, when we talk about potentially running out of clean water, no one wants to hear that,” Oswego resident Kelly Bertog said.

Officials broke ground on the project, which includes multiple delivery points and requires complex infrastructure work spanning residential neighborhoods and roadways.

Bertog, a father of two, says he’s proud to know his community is getting ahead of the problem.

“They’re going to be taken care of because of all the people here that have been thinking about the clean water and making sure that my kids, and you know, ideally eventually grandkids will have access to clean drinking water,” Bertog said.

“Where I live, I do have Lake Michigan water; it’s definitely worth the rates that you pay for it,” said Jon Rogan, who works in Oswego.

The new Waterlink system is expected to be up and running by 2028

Hernando Commission Denies Fire Department’s Tax Increase Request Amidst Budget Concerns

On Wednesday, Hernando County officials engaged in a crucial discussion with representatives from Hernando County Fire Rescue and the Public Safety Director. The meeting centered on a proposed tax increase, ranging from 4% to 6%, aimed at enhancing the county’s emergency services infrastructure. Plans include constructing new fire stations, upgrading equipment, and boosting staff numbers.

The proposed tax hike is projected to generate approximately $45 million, as outlined in meeting documents. However, the suggestion met with resistance from county commissioners, with some outright dismissing the proposal.

Unanticipated Boos at NBA Finals Leave Donald Trump ‘Caught Off Guard’ – A Surprising Reaction Unveiled

Donald Trump made history as the first sitting U.S. president to attend the NBA Finals. Fans were informed ahead of time that he would be present at Game 3 of the finals between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs at Madison Square Garden. As a native New Yorker and lifelong Knicks enthusiast, Trump was no stranger to the courtside seats, where he frequently showed support for his favorite team before stepping into the Oval Office.

However, Trump’s transition from a prominent New York businessman and real estate mogul to the presidency brought additional security measures to ensure his safety at the event. This heightened security resulted in longer queues for fans entering the arena and led to the cancellation of outdoor watch parties that usually accompany such events.

When Trump’s image appeared on the Jumbotron during the National Anthem, the audience’s reaction was one of mixed emotions, predominantly boos. According to a body language expert, this reaction was likely not anticipated by the president.

President Trump ‘shocked’ that he was booed

Inbaal Honigman, renowned for her expertise in astrology and body language analysis, has been a familiar face in media circles for over two decades. Her insights have been featured in various platforms, including Big Brother’s Little Brother, Elle Magazine, and talkSPORT radio.

Speaking to Showbiz Cheat Sheet on behalf of Casino.org US, Honigman remarked, “Trump’s expression shifted noticeably upon hearing the booing, indicating his surprise. As the National Anthem played at Madison Square Garden, he brought his hand to his brow in salute, raising his chin with a closed-lip smile that conveyed a sense of subdued confidence. By standing tall during the salute, he aimed to project an image of authority.”

Speaking on behalf of Casino.org US, Honigman told Showbiz Cheat Sheet, “Trump’s facial expression quickly switches when he notices the booing, which suggests surprise … As the National Anthem starts to play at Madison Square Garden, the president raises his hand to his brow and salutes. He raises his chin proudly and smiles with his lips closed, in an expression that sends out a message of quiet confidence. Stretching himself to his full height at the moment of saluting, he wants to create an impression of authority.”

Honigman continued, “This impression is only a facade, however, because Trump’s body can be seen rising and falling, as he’s lightly rocking back and forth on the balls of his feet. This rocking is a soothing move, calming his nerves as all eyes are on him. Easing his tension, his calm smile shines, but he is not prepared for what comes next.

“When he hears the big boos, Trump’s smile changes completely, and suddenly. This instant, sudden change is the proof that he wasn’t expecting the boos, and he’s caught off guard, unable to maintain the show of confidence. It is the swiftness of the change which indicates the immediate shock.”

Did the president fall asleep during the game?

There’s also been some debate online about whether Trump actually fell asleep during the game. According to Honigman, he did.

She noted, “His ‘dropped’ face is a dead giveaway. The president’s facial muscles are usually engaged in some or another distinct expression. Whether he is smiling or frowning, any expression at all would be a clue of wakefulness. But here, as all his muscles are relaxed, he is almost certainly in the land of nod.

“Trump’s clasped hands and forward-rolled shoulders create a self-supporting oval cocoon, much like a baby in a car seat … In addition, eagle-eyed viewers will be able to see that his breathing is very deep and regular. Trump’s chest rises and falls rhythmically, which points to a stage of complete relaxation.”

The expert added, “The moment of waking up is evident, as the president jumps, stretches his back, and adopts a new, focused facial expression, perhaps hoping that his previous facial arrangement wasn’t too dazed. He appears startled, moving quickly and glancing from side to side, to check whether anyone has noticed.”

Showbiz Cheat Sheet acknowledges that conditions and cultures can impact body language and is sensitive to all backgrounds.

Tragic Betrayal: Inside the Shocking Shaughnessy Case of a Son’s Deadly Plot Against His Father

0

His parents gave him an idyllic upbringing, but he repaid them with betrayal.

On the evening of March 2, 2018, Texas jewelry store owners Ted and Corey Shaughnessy spent a typical night at home, enjoying a quiet dinner followed by some television before heading to bed.

The tranquility was abruptly shattered around 4:30 a.m. when one of their dogs began barking furiously. Ted, sensing something amiss, armed himself and went to investigate. Within moments, the sound of gunfire broke the silence of the night.

Corey vividly recounted the terrifying episode on Oxygen’s Dateline: Secrets Uncovered, saying, “Right after that, there was a barrage of gunfire. It was very close.”

In a state of panic, Corey grabbed her own firearm, noticing a light filtering through the bedroom door as someone shot the family dog. It was the beginning of a nightmare that would leave an indelible mark on their lives.

Terrified, she opened fire, grabbed her phone, and ran into a nearby closet, where she called 911.

As she remembered, “I knew I was going to die.”

Yet, somehow Corey managed to survive. By the time emergency responders arrived to her Austin home 15 minutes later, the intruders were gone. Badly shaken, Corey was convinced her husband must have been killed in a robbery gone wrong—but the truth was more chilling than she could ever imagine.

Who Were Ted and Corey Shaughnessy?

To those who knew them, Ted and Corey seemed like an ideal couple. While Ted, the more outgoing of the pair, had served as the face of their business, Gallerie Jewelers, the more reserved Corey worked behind the scenes as the appraiser.

At the center of their world was their adopted son Nicholas.

“They seemed inseparable,” friend Vicki Frenk remembered of the family. “They were like the three musketeers…They did everything together.”

Nicholas Shaughnessy, Jaclyn Edison Provide Support For Corey Shaughnessy

By the time of Ted’s murder, 19-year-old Nicholas was living two hours away in College Station with his high school sweetheart-turned-wife Jaclyn Edison.

“Nick, Nick, Nick, Nick,” Corey said in a call to her son that night. “Dad’s dead.”

A seemingly shocked Nick replied, “Wait, what?” before he assured his mother that he and Jackie were on their way to Austin.

In the months that followed, Jackie and Nick were a constant source of support for Corey as they moved into her house, helped her to trigger her memory and even began working at the jewelry store, allowing her to keep the business from closing.

Detectives Turn Their Focus to Nicholas Shaughnessy

But while Corey was finding comfort in her son’s presence, detectives began to suspect he was hiding something, especially after learning the killers had entered through the same window Nick often used to sneak out of as a teen.

“I assumed at that point that they were looking at him for the very reasons they were looking at me,” Corey, who hired a defense attorney to protect her son, said. “It was easy.”

Soon, detectives learned that at the time of the murders Nick and Jackie—who loved the finer things and fancy clothes—were broke. Nick had blown through the $30,000 his parents had given him to begin a career as a day trader. And, he stood to collect $1 million in life insurance policies on each of his parents as the sole heir to their fortune.

Although surveillance footage captured Nick and Jackie at their apartment at the time of the murders, investigators found it odd that Nick had a box at his apartment with the same type of .380 ammunition used in the shooting.

Then, authorities recovered deleted text messages between Jackie and Nick that had inadvertently been saved to a Mac mini device in the apartment.

“Do they want 50k or not,” Jackie wrote to Nick on Feb. 23, 2018. “We can’t afford to pay half before.”

Detectives believed the suspicious communications were related to hiring somebody to carry out the murders. They also learned that Nick had asked others about killing his parents.

After reviewing phone records and witness accounts, they eventually linked the killings to hired hitmen Arieon Smith and Johnny Leon.

Nick and Jackie were arrested on May 29, 2018.

Corey was still holding out hope that Nick’s arrest had been a mistake, until her son’s defense attorney sat her down and explained that Ted had been killed by his own 40-caliber gun, which had been taken from the jewelry store and given to Arieon.

“I finally had my questions answered,” she said, “and I knew that Nicholas had done it.”

What Happened to Nicholas Shaughnessy and Jackie Edison?

Nick pleaded guilty to murder in April 2021 in exchange for a sentence of 35 years with the possibility of parole.

Arieon and Johnny also pleaded guilty and were sentenced to 35 years with the possibility of parole.

Jackie admitted to investigators that Nick talked about killing his parents, but claimed in recorded interviews that she didn’t believe he was serious.

Jackie agreed to plead guilty in 2023 to attempted conspiracy to commit murder. She received deferred adjudication, which allowed her to plead to the offense and be placed on probation without being convicted. She was ordered to spend 120 days in jail and spend 10 years on probation. In addition, every year on the anniversary of Ted’s death, she’ll spend two days in jail.

It wasn’t enough for Corey, who addressed her former daughter-in-law in a taped victim impact statement played in court.

“How long will it take for you to find another family to destroy?” she asked. “How long will it be before Bonnie finds her next Clyde? You are a monster. You are evil.”

What Does Nicholas Shaughnessy Say Today About the Murders?

Now behind bars, Nick admitted he had an ideal childhood.

“It was a perfect life,” he told Dateline’s Andrea Canning. “Everything you could ever dream of. I had parents who cared for me, who would do anything for me.”

Yet, he said as he entered adulthood, he was searching for an identity and became obsessed with the idea of inheriting his parent’s money to help him “create a new life.”

He called his actions “extremely cowardly” and described the murders as one of his “deepest regrets.”

As for what he would say to his mother today? “I wish that I could express how truly sorry I am,” he said. “The pain that I caused her was so selfish and I’m trying each and every day to be the best version of myself to hopefully show the world one day that that is not who I am.”

What Message Did Corey Shaughnessy Have For Her Son?

Corey hasn’t spoken to her son since his arrest. While she said she will always love her child, she doesn’t love the person Nick has become.

“I can’t tell you what I would give in this world to be able to talk, again, to his dad,” she said. “But I can’t. And so he’s not going to get to talk to me because ghosts can’t talk, and I’m supposed to be dead.”

Taylor Swift and Haim Light Up the Knicks’ NBA Finals: A Star-Studded Courtside Spectacle

0

Taylor Swift snagged prime seating at the NBA Finals’ Game 4, settling into the rumored wedding venue of Madison Square Garden to support the New York Knicks as they faced off against the San Antonio Spurs.

The pop icon was enjoying the courtside excitement solo, as her fiancé, Travis Kelce, was occupied with a mandatory three-day minicamp with the Kansas City Chiefs, gearing up for the 2026 NFL season.

With Kelce away, Swift turned the evening into a fun girls’ night, cheering for the Knicks, who were fighting to avoid another playoff loss and inch closer to the NBA Championship.

Swift was joined by her close friends, Alana and Este Haim, from the pop-rock band HAIM. The sisters accompanied her at the courtside seats, adding to the lively atmosphere.

The trio sported humorous blue-and-orange T-shirts to show their team spirit. Swift’s shirt cleverly read “Stevie Knicks,” a nod to the Fleetwood Mac singer, while Alana and Este wore witty shirts labeled “Knickole Kidman” and “Knickelback.”

And when she appeared on the jumbotron at MSG for the first time, Swift received a largely warm welcome from the home crowd in stark contrast to President Donald Trump, who was emphatically jeered at Game 3 on Monday night.

While there were some boos for the songstress, the majority of fans in attendance showered her with cheers prior to tip-off.

Swift, who appeared on the red carpet in Los Angeles for the Toy Story 5 premiere just days ago, is a huge Knicks fan after living in New York for a number of years.

An insider also exclusively told Daily Mail last week that she is set to marry Kelce at MSG on July 3 after the couple decided to ’embrace the spectacle’ of a giant wedding.

The source also revealed that Taylor and Travis were considering Casa Cipriani in Manhattan’s Financial District as a potential venue prior to settling on the home of the Knicks, which can accommodate up to 22,000 people.

It’s unclear just how many people will be invited to witness them tie the knot, yet fans are expected to be invited to celebrate.

In the last round of the NBA playoffs, Swift joined her soon-to-be husband courtside as he cheered on his hometown team, the Cleveland Cavaliers, against the Knicks.

The music icon drew criticism from New Yorkers that night for appearing to root against her favorite team, but she will undoubtedly be getting behind the Knicks in Wednesday’s crucial clash with the Spurs.

Would you want to be part of Taylor Swift’s courtside squad?

They stormed 2-0 ahead in the series after two opening road wins in San Antonio, before the Spurs hit back in New York City on Monday night to reduce the deficit to 2-1.

A ticket to Madison Square Garden on Wednesday is the hottest in town. As of Wednesday afternoon, the cheapest were being sold for around $4,000 as the Knicks eye their first championship since 1973.

Swift joins a number of A-list stars on celebrity row at MSG, including die-hard Knicks fans Timothee Chalamet, Ben Stiller and Spike Lee.

Chalamet was sat courtside with girlfriend Kylie Jenner, whose bestie Hailey Bieber had to settle for a suite higher up in the arena.

Swift will not have to brace herself for a potentially awkward encounter with Donald Trump, nevertheless, after the president opted to skip Game 4 following his controversial appearance on Monday night.

Trump was emphatically booed when he was shown on the jumbotron during the national anthem, after his presence meant the secret service had shut down streets around the arena to accommodate the security procedures needed to keep him safe.

Fans were told to arrive hours before the game and were forced to line up around the streets in blazing sunshine to go through airport-style security under the watch of the secret service.

Trump and Swift infamously both attended the Super Bowl in New Orleans in February 2025, when the Philadelphia Eagles beat Kelce’s Chiefs 40-22.

Swift was booed that day by parts of the stadium occupied by Eagles fans.

Trump gleefully mocked her after the game, posting on Truth Social: ‘The only one that had a tougher night than the Kansas City Chiefs was Taylor Swift. She got BOOED out of the Stadium. MAGA is very unforgiving!’

Whatever the outcome on Wednesday at MSG, the NBA Finals will go to a fifth game back in San Antonio on Saturday night.

From there, a possible Game 6 is held in New York on Tuesday, June 16 and the decider would be played back in Texas on Friday, June 19.

Unveiling the Box Office Phenomenon: How ‘Obsession’ Captivated Audiences Worldwide

0

The surprise and unprecedented success of “Obsession” at the box office has left many industry insiders astounded, as it has emerged as an unexpected horror sensation. It’s almost as if someone at Focus Features stumbled upon a magic formula, given the film’s remarkable journey. Directed by Curry Barker, known for his work as a YouTube sketch comedian, the film made its debut at the Toronto Film Festival in September 2025. In a bold move, the indie studio acquired the worldwide rights for a record-breaking $15 million, ensuring the movie recouped its modest production costs, estimated between $750,000 and $1 million, even before it reached theaters.

In anticipation of its May 15 release, Focus Features projected a respectable opening weekend of $8-$10 million, in line with other well-received indie horror films. However, “Obsession” defied expectations, raking in $17 million in its opening weekend alone. Such a feat is not unheard of when a film benefits from favorable reviews and strong word-of-mouth, but “Obsession” quickly began to shatter records at a pace few could have predicted.

Nearly a month after its release, “Obsession” continues to draw audiences, showing no signs of losing momentum. Despite competition from major releases like “Backrooms,” “Scary Movie,” and the disappointing “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” each of which briefly claimed the top spot on the box office charts, “Obsession” consistently reclaimed its lead. The film’s narrative, centered around a young man named Bear (played by Michael Johnston) and his ill-fated wish for his co-worker Nikki (portrayed by breakout star Inde Navarette) to fall in love with him, seems to resonate more profoundly with audiences than any of the anticipated summer blockbusters.

Delving into the film’s impressive box office figures provides insight into its success and allows us to explore the factors contributing to its widespread appeal.

While “Obsession” has performed decently on the international stage, the bulk of its earnings stem from North America, with a staggering $161.2 million garnered domestically compared to $73.3 million overseas. As it continues its theatrical run, the global total could potentially reach $400 million. The relatively lower international earnings might be attributed to stricter content ratings. In the U.K., for example, “Obsession” has become a popular word-of-mouth hit, amassing over £10 million despite facing an 18 rating (akin to an NC-17) due to its intense violence, which likely limits its financial potential.

What has Obsession made at the box office?

Although it’s hardly flopped internationally, the vast majority of the “Obsession” box office so far comes from the USA: $161.2 million in North America, compared to $73.3 million overseas. While the full worldwide run could go as high as $400 million by the time it leaves theaters, the lower numbers internationally could be due to more restrictive ratings. In the U.K. for example, while it’s become a word-of-mouth hit with over £10 million banked so far, a highly restrictive 18 rating (the country’s equivalent to an NC-17) due to excessive violence puts a ceiling on how much it can rake in.

Domestically, the movie started bucking trends over Memorial Day weekend, when it shot up by 39% to make $32 million across the four days — the biggest increase for a wide release movie ever outside of the Christmas season. On weekend three, it overtook the previous week’s No. 1, “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” and shot up again, becoming the first film since 1982’s “E.T: the Extra-Terrestrial” to see increases on three consecutive weekends, a major feat considering that was a family-friendly blockbuster, and this is a dark R-rated horror film with a bleak ending.

It decreased slightly on weekend four but still held strong, becoming Focus’ highest-grossing film both domestically and worldwide (beating the first “Downton Abbey” movie), as well as becoming the highest grossing movie a studio has ever picked up from a film festival. For 22 years, that record was held by Michael Moore’s “Fahrenheit 9/11,” which made a whopping $222 million in 2004. By the time you’re reading this, “Obsession” will probably have broken a few more records.

Horror is experiencing a box office resurgence

Horror movies may open strongly, but more often than not tend to have bad word of mouth that causes them to crash the next weekend. That wasn’t the case with “Obsession,” which became one of only six horror movies since 2019 to score an A- or higher with opening weekend audiences polled by Cinemascore, including “Sinners” (which scored an A, an all-time best for original, R-rated horror) and “Weapons,” which nabbed an A- last summer. Other horror titles with high scores have been part of franchises with built-in audiences, like “A Quiet Place: Part II” or “Five Nights at Freddy’s.”

Why is this relevant? All those movies became huge hits, with the first two riding their positive buzz right through to the Oscars, and producer Jason Blum — who helped bring “Obsession” to screens — believes that the success of more conventionally crowd-pleasing horror in turn helps grow the appetite for weirder, wilder horror amongst younger audiences. He recently told Variety, “There’s a new generation of moviegoers who are declaring a very specific taste for horror movies that is quite left-of-center,” with the article also noting that 75% of audiences seeing “Obsession” in the first couple of weeks were between the ages of 18 and 25.

In short, a new generation of horror fans who got into the genre via the likes of “Sinners” and “Weapons” are now looking for bigger shocks, and a nasty thriller like “Obsession” (and the equally unconventional “Backrooms”) scratches that itch. Young audiences newly acclimatized to the genre are destroying the notion of what a crowd-pleaser can be as they are proving to be hungry for more extreme scares — and more movies to watch that are as dark as “Obsession.”

There are plenty of extreme horror movies making their way into cinemas from indie distributors of late — why has this one broken out on such a major level? The answer is simple: strip away the supernatural elements, and this is a highly topical movie that resonates strongly with young audiences because of its depiction of gender dynamics.

Male audiences made up most of the box office on opening weekend (by 59% to 41%), but that’s increasingly skewed female as more find out that the film offers a very timely commentary on the “Manosphere” and how it targets lonely men, with Bear becoming an increasingly irredeemable character as he refuses to break his wish and keeps the real Nikki suffering.

Many young women have written online about their love for the movie because it reflects abusive relationship dynamics they have unfortunately been a part of, with the supernatural allegory helping to illustrate how damaging it is to be stuck with a coercive, toxic partner. It doesn’t let Bear off the hook for his actions (even going as far as showing him assaulting a partner who literally can’t consent), and the ending is far from cathartic. But rather than repulsing people, it’s drawing them in due to its exploration of a worrying aspect of Gen-Z dating and the modern gender divide that other films have been too reluctant to dive into. It speaks to the moment in all its ugliness and lets audiences unpack their own prior experiences in relation to the horrors they’ve just witnessed.

It’s a movie for Gen-Z, by Gen-Z, about Gen-Z

Here’s another reason why “Obsession” has struck such a chord with young audiences: strip away the supernatural One Wish Willow and its disastrous consequences, and you’ll see one of the most authentic, lived-in depictions of Gen-Z life in the movies. It’s easy for younger viewers to see themselves in this story when the characters are similarly working dead-end retail jobs, not making enough money for anything but their weekly trivia night bar trip, and still dreaming of departing the dead-end towns they’ve said they’d leave for years after their high school graduations.

Even their living situations reflect the financial insecurity of this generation without putting too fine a point on it, with these twentysomethings either still living with their parents or in shared rentals. Only Bear lives alone, and that’s only because it’s suggested that his grandmother left him the house in her will. These are all small details, but together, they showcase an authenticity that could only have come from a young filmmaker in that age bracket, which makes it easier to buy into the high concept once it’s introduced.

“Backrooms” director Kane Parsons may be much younger, but his film is an early 1990s period piece starring older characters, making “Obsession” the only film currently in the multiplex that offers something of a mirror to modern life for young Americans. The ages of these characters aren’t particularly relevant to the story itself but are still a crucial factor in why this has been an overwhelming success with young audiences: a filmmaker of their generation can depict their lives with an authenticity a seasoned Hollywood director can’t.

There is already early Oscar buzz

It’s June, which means no sane person should be making Oscar predictions for at least another six months, but “Obsession” appears to be following the same trajectory as both “Sinners” and “Weapons” last year. Growing numbers of online film fans are speculating that this could ride a wave of buzz all the way to Oscar nominations and possibly even a couple of wins. But take that with a pinch of salt for now: This is Barker’s first theatrical credit after an even cheaper YouTube found footage horror movie and stars a cast of relative unknowns. It may get on Oscar voters’ radars, but there are bigger hurdles to cross to get them nominations, regardless of how deserving they might be.

Oscar buzz may not change the minds of those who actually vote for awards — especially this early in the year — but “Obsession” does have a major advantage: it’s getting audiences who may not be horror fans to buy a ticket. As with “Sinners” or “Get Out,” the overwhelming buzz has helped it break out beyond the gorehound demographic and attract the kind of viewers who would otherwise be allergic to seeing someone’s head get repeatedly smashed onto a brick. Viral discussions of the weighty, timely themes have also helped it get taken more seriously than horror movies often do, along with the singling out of Navarette’s transformative, breakout performance; if chatter on social media is anything to go by, there’s no chance she’s missing the best actress lineup come 2027.

There are Obsession memes

You know that a movie has truly captured the zeitgeist when memes start cropping up — but when it’s a movie this small, they spread the word further, rather than just speak to the echo chamber of those who have already seen it. Aided by the vaguest awareness of the movie itself, images of Nikki with either a forced, exasperated smile or a sinister frown have become viral reaction shots easily adapted to any small quibble in a relationship. Been told you’re overthinking something, or haven’t had a reply to a text they read hours ago? Breakdown Nikki barely holding it together says everything you can’t.

Before the movie has even arrived on VOD or streaming, many of its scenes have already generated highly memeable TikTok reaction sounds too, with Nikki repeating “no” in the restaurant scene being used in videos by more than 10,000 users and counting, proving relevant to everything from not wanting your partner to go home to asking someone at the theater to turn their cell phone off. It’s even caught the attention of A-list site users too, with Olivia Rodrigo posting a self-deprecating video using the sound after someone pointed out how much she talks about being in bed in her lyrics.

Out-of-context clips can sometimes kill a movie, but this sound has done the opposite and highlighted the ratcheting intensity of Navarette’s performance in an easily digestible way. It’s the rare meme that’s raised interest rather than turning the movie around it into a laughingstock.

Savannah Advocates Endorse Bottoms for Governor Amid Criticism of Jackson and Burt’s Self-Serving Agendas

SAVANNAH, Ga. — As Georgia’s primary election runoff approaches, the race for the Republican nomination for governor is heating up, drawing significant attention. Businessman Rick Jackson and Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones are set to compete again this Tuesday, each aiming to secure a spot on the November general election ballot. The winner will go head-to-head with Democratic contender and former Atlanta Mayor, Keisha Lance Bottoms.

In a show of support for Bottoms, four prominent local leaders held a press conference in Savannah on Tuesday. Among them were Mayor Van Johnson, Public Service Commissioner Alicia Johnson, and Chatham County Commissioner Aaron “Adot” Whitely. They urged voters to back Bottoms, criticizing Jackson and Jones for prioritizing personal gain over the interests of Georgians.

“Whether it’s Burt Jones altering the law to benefit his family’s business or Rick Jackson profiting from lucrative no-bid contracts,” remarked Savannah Mayor Van Johnson, “it’s clear to me that these actions do not align with the everyday realities faced by Georgians.”

The speakers emphasized that Bottoms would provide a fairer playing field, accusing Jackson and Jones of having a history of self-serving practices.

Speakers said that Bottoms would even the odds, while accusing Jones and Jackson of having a long record of self-enrichment.

“If we have a strong governor who’s willing to use the veto power, which I believe the key to Lance Bottoms is, I think we can get a lot done in our state to make sure that tables are more equal, you know, to make sure that our state is more equitable,” District 6 Chatham County Commissioner Whitely said.

Jones and Jackson spoke earlier this month about their ideals.

“We said we were gonna cut taxes, we said we were gonna get rid of regulations,” Jones said. “We said we were gonna pass school choice. We said we were gonna be tough on public safety and we also assured you we were gonna have voter integrity back in this state right here. And we are very, very close right here to being your nominee and we wanna be your next governor.”

Jackson said, “People resonate with the fact that I’m not a politician, that I have struggled and I know how to do that. And my promise to our kids and people growing up in Georgia  on both sides of the aisle is I’m going to show them how they can be successful and pull themselves up  by their bootstraps and overcome the hurdles that they’re doing.”
