UK’s New £1.65 Billion Nuclear Submarine Launches After 13 Years

0

Britain’s newest attack submarine, HMS Agamemnon, left the shipyard yesterday after spending 13 years under construction.

The 7,400-tonne, 97-metre hunter-killer submarine is the sixth vessel in the Royal Navy’s Astute-class nuclear-powered fleet. It was built at a cost of £1.65 billion.

The submarine’s construction was marked by an exceptionally lengthy delay.

Although it was commissioned in 2013, the Ministry of Defence had expected HMS Agamemnon to become an operational part of Britain’s nuclear fleet by 2022.

Carrying a crew of 100, HMS Agamemnon departed BAE Systems’ shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness for sea trials, the next major stage before it formally enters active service.

During its maiden voyage, the submarine navigated the shipyard’s dock system before entering the Walney Channel and heading into the Irish Sea for the first time in open waters.

Once operational, HMS Agamemnon will join fellow Astute-class hunter-killer submarines HMS Astute, HMS Ambush, HMS Artful, HMS Audacious and HMS Anson in Royal Navy service.

First Sea Lord General Sir Gwyn Jenkins said HMS Agamemnon “embodies the best of British engineering and the professionalism of our submariners” and would be “one of the most advanced submarines ever operated by the Royal Navy”.

HMS Agamemnon will now undergo sea trials - a major step towards delivering the highly capable attack submarine to bolster security for the UK and the Euro-Atlantic, the Ministry of Defence said

Sir Gwyn added: “As we continue to strengthen our warfighting readiness, HMS Agamemnon will play a central role in keeping the United Kingdom safe, contributing to Nato’s collective defence and ensuring we are ready to lead, fight and win.”

The £1.65 billion nuclear submarine takes its name from the ancient Greek king Agamemnon, while also paying tribute to Lord Nelson’s favourite ship, which was affectionately known as “Eggs and Bacon”.

HMS Agamemnon was formally named at BAE Systems’ Submarines site in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria.

The vessel was blessed and christened, with a bottle of beer from the local Ulverston Brewing Company smashed against its hull.

The sixth Astute-class submarine, which measures 97 metres in length, had been scheduled to launch in 2024 before being commissioned into the Royal Navy.

The submarine’s departure comes after reports earlier this year claimed that the Royal Navy’s entire available fleet of hunter-killer submarines was stuck in port and unable to sail, leaving Britain exposed to the threat posed by Vladimir Putin’s Russia.

In another setback for Britain’s Armed Forces, all five of its existing Astute-class submarines were said to be laid up while awaiting maintenance and other repair work.

Military experts have warned that the shortage of operational nuclear-powered attack submarines—which can carry up to 38 Spearfish torpedoes and a battery of Tomahawk missiles—could leave the UK’s undersea internet and power cables dangerously vulnerable to sabotage by the Kremlin.

The submarines also have a crucial role in protecting the larger Vanguard-class vessels, which carry the Trident ballistic missiles that form the United Kingdom’s nuclear deterrent.

The revelations came just a day after the Mail reported that one of Britain’s flagship £3.5 billion aircraft carriers had broken down again and been forced into port in Norway for repairs.

And on Friday the head of the UK’s military warned that the threats faced by Britain are greater than at any time since the Cold War.

In stark comments, Sir Richard Knighton, Chief of the Defence Staff, said Russia has been ‘probing, challenging, testing our defences’ and is ‘raising the stakes and risks crossing a line’.

He told the BBC: ‘I’m very clear that this is the most dangerous time I have known in my working life.

‘The risks and threats to this country are greater than I have known since the Cold War.’

Lord West, former First Sea Lord and Labour security minister, said it was ‘unacceptable’ and ‘very worrying’ that Astute subs are out of action.

‘The attack submarines are fundamental for looking after our ballistic missile submarines,’ he added.

‘They are fundamental for frightening and terrifying the Russians.

‘The fact that there has not been money invested in dry docks, in the maintenance facilities, in the men required to maintain and repair the submarines, in the spare parts for those submarines is why we have got to this position.

‘It is just unacceptable and puts us in a very difficult position. If we haven’t even got an attack submarine available for use, then things are looking pretty bad.’

Jay-Z Sexual Assault Accuser Says There’s “No Truth” to Claim

Beyoncé and Jay-Z Respond to “Haters” in First Collaboration in Seven Years

A woman who previously accused Jay-Z of sexual assault has withdrawn her allegations.

Nearly two years after the “Empire State of Mind” rapper, whose real name is Shawn Carter, was accused of raping an unnamed 13-year-old girl identified in court records as Jane Doe, the woman has formally recanted her claims. According to court documents obtained by E! News, she said there was “no truth” to the allegations.

“I have never met or spoken to Mr. Carter. Mr. Carter never engaged in any inappropriate conduct toward me,” she wrote. “I understand my false accusations have caused Mr. Carter immense pain, suffering, and damage that can never be fully undone.”

E! News said it contacted representatives for Jay-Z and legal counsel for Jane Doe but had not received a response.

The lawsuit, filed in December 2024, alleged that Jay-Z drugged and raped the woman at a party in 2000 alongside Sean “Diddy” Combs. Jay-Z strongly denied the accusation from the outset, describing the lawsuit in a statement to E! News as a “false complaint” driven by an alleged “pursuit of money and fame.”

“This incident didn’t happen,” the rapper said at the time. Jay-Z had sought to have the plaintiff’s name disclosed, but the motion was denied. “True Justice is coming. We fight FROM victory, not FOR victory. This was over before it began.”

AI Ads Surge in 2026 Midterms as Disclosure Rules Fall Short

0

The video initially looks like a standard campaign spot: Zohran Mamdani and Kathy Hochul introduce themselves as they walk through a sunlit park.

As the 43-second clip unfolds, however, the staged conversation takes a decidedly darker turn. Mamdani, New York City’s mayor, and Hochul, the state’s governor, are presented in an unflattering way. A narrator even calls Hochul “the political delusion pill for New Yorkers who would rather think about what four more years could actually cost them.”

The spot is not from either Democrat. It was produced for Bruce Blakeman, the Trump-backed Republican challenging Hochul in the New York governor’s race. The depictions of Mamdani and Hochul were created with artificial intelligence. Although the words “paid for by Blakeman for New York” appear in small type throughout the ad, the video does not disclose its AI origins—despite a New York law requiring political communications to provide that information.

In August, the New York State Democratic Party asked the state Board of Elections to investigate Blakeman’s AI-generated advertising, arguing that the campaign had violated the new disclosure requirement. Blakeman’s campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

AI-powered attack ads have become an increasingly familiar feature of the 2026 midterm campaign, ranging from clearly exaggerated satire to videos designed to look authentic. States have adopted a patchwork of rules governing AI disclosures, yet research suggests campaigns are not consistently following them. Experts say the effect of AI political advertising on voters remains uncertain, but stronger and more consistent oversight is becoming increasingly urgent.

Scott Babwah Brennen, director of New York University’s Center on Technology Policy and a policy research affiliate at its Center for Social Media, AI, and Politics, said narrowly focused labels can be useful when content is materially deceptive. But he cautioned that misinformation cannot be solved through isolated disclaimers alone, because it is rooted in the broader media ecosystem.

By the numbers

The Wesleyan Media Project, which monitors and evaluates election advertising, has counted at least 164 political ads that were generated or modified with AI during the current campaign cycle. Its researchers noted that the true number is probably higher because identifying AI use is not always possible. Nearly seven in 10 of the ads—69%—did not say that AI tools had been involved.

Travis Ridout, the project’s co-director, compared the database with information from the National Conference of State Legislatures to examine compliance in states with AI disclosure laws. Among ads aired in states without such requirements, 32% still included a disclaimer. In states with disclosure rules, the figure was lower: just 29% identified their AI use.

Ridout said the numbers require some context. Not every ad in the database falls under a state’s rules, since laws may address only certain forms of AI use. Tennessee’s statute, for instance, focuses specifically on deepfakes that impersonate candidates. Laws may also have taken effect after an ad was broadcast. Even so, Ridout said it was surprising to see campaigns voluntarily disclose AI use when no law required them to do so.

“I think it’s a time when campaigns are really trying to figure out what are the norms surrounding this, what are the laws surrounding this?” he said. “It may depend on the campaign consultant or the firm that’s producing the ads. It’s a time of uncertainty and so it’s all shaking out right now.”

Deception vs. satire

Not every AI-enhanced campaign video is meant to fool viewers. Some are deliberately comedic or satirical, while others are so over-the-top that their artificial nature is part of the joke.

Michigan Republican Mike Rogers, locked in a competitive Senate contest against Democrat Abdul El-Sayed, shared an AI-generated video on X in June portraying himself as a superhero. The clip showed him performing impossible feats, including stopping a speeding car with one hand. “Haters will say it’s AI,” Rogers’ post said, apparently acknowledging the joke.

In North Carolina, state Sen. Michael Lee’s Republican campaign released an August ad accusing Democrat Jessica Bichler of being excessively liberal. Bichler, who works as a yoga instructor, is shown twisting her body into physically impossible poses. The ad openly includes the disclaimer: “You guessed it! AI was definitely used to generate these silly video clips.”

Republican campaigns and conservative groups accounted for 80% of the 164 AI-related ads tracked by the Wesleyan Media Project. Sponsors aligned with Democrats produced 11%, while the remaining 9% came from independent candidates, issue campaigns and other groups.

What’s next?

Basil Smikle, a Democratic strategist and policy adviser, said missing AI disclosures may reflect a deliberate decision, but they could also stem from simple oversight or confusion about the rules. Because AI makes it faster and cheaper to produce campaign videos, the technology offers campaigns greater efficiency. At the same time, it can make political messaging feel less authentic, leave voters feeling deceived and accelerate the spread of false information.

“In the wrong hands, it could be a really dangerous trend, but if done well it can help do things that campaigns need to do and should do, which is tell good stories,” Smikle said.

He added that identifying AI-generated content is essential for accountability, particularly as voters and policymakers continue to grapple with a technology that remains poorly understood. Clear labels, he said, give the public important context when judging campaign messages and making electoral decisions.

While they may promote transparency, an October 2024 report co-authored by Babwah Brennen found that labels can end up hurting a candidate. Respondents in an online experiment rated candidates as less trustworthy and less appealing when their ads contained AI disclaimers, and the ads themselves as less accurate. Labels also created a “backfire effect” in which respondents expressed lower opinions of creators of attack ads than of the candidates being attacked. As many as 37% of respondents didn’t even remember seeing an AI label.

Babwah Brennen advocates for more of an overarching approach to addressing the arrival of AI campaign ads. For example, improving campaign transparency in general and investing in local journalism. He also noted that because laws regulating such AI use are so new, it’s not yet clear how enforcement works and what falls within their purview.

Standardizing these regulations could help, Ridout said.

“If we could get something at the federal level I think that would make it clearer for campaigns what we can, what we can’t do,” he said. “Congress hasn’t done anything yet, nor have the regulatory agencies. And so into that vacuum many of the states have entered.”

Jerry Maguire Star Jonathan Lipnicki at 35: See Him Now

0

Jonathan Lipnicki shot to fame at just six years old, winning over audiences as Ray Boyd, the witty and endearing child at the center of Jerry Maguire.

The 1996 sports romantic comedy starred Tom Cruise and Renee Zellweger as a couple whose relationship faces serious turmoil. Lipnicki famously stole one scene with the improvised line, “The human head weighs eight pounds.”

His breakout performance earned Lipnicki the Critics’ Choice Award for Best Child Performance, along with a Young Artist Award from the Young Artist Foundation.

Now 35, Lipnicki drew attention during a rare red carpet appearance at the Los Angeles premiere of A24’s Primetime. The psychological crime thriller and media satire features him in a brief but striking cameo as an accused child predator.

He opted for a polished yet sporty look, wearing a sage-green suit with a black button-up shirt and purple pocket square while posing alongside a brunette who appeared to be his date.

The signature glasses he wore in Jerry Maguire were absent. Lipnicki did wear glasses as a child before undergoing LASIK eye surgery at 18, and he now sports a closely cropped beard—but his warm, engaging smile remains unmistakable.

Primetime explores the behind-the-scenes tensions surrounding the NBC reality series To Catch a Predator. Robert Pattinson stars as host Chris Hansen, who resorts to increasingly extreme and unhinged tactics to lure high-profile targets and drive up ratings.

Singer Phoebe Bridgers makes her feature-film debut as Del, a decoy working with Hansen and the surveillance team during the sting operation.

Despite his new role, Lipnicki’s best-known performance remains Ray Boyd in Jerry Maguire—a part he nearly missed out on entirely.

“I auditioned for Jerry Maguire, and I didn’t get it. They went with another kid. They shot two weeks with him,” he told People in February.

“And they wouldn’t see me when they were recasting it, because I was on a list of people who’d already been seen. But I had been seen by an associate, not the casting director.”

Lipnicki’s agent refused to let the opportunity disappear, eventually securing him an audition with Cruise and the film’s director, Cameron Crowe.

“I had an agent at the time, wonderful guy, and he was the head of the children’s talent division at this agency,” Lipnicki recalled. “And he said, ‘Don’t see any of my other kids. I stake my reputation in the industry on this. I have Ray Boyd sitting in my chair right now. Please see him.’”

“I was seen by the casting director, and they’re like, ‘How would you like to fly out to Arizona tomorrow and meet Tom Cruise and read for him and Cameron Crowe?’”

‘And I went to Arizona, where they’re doing the football scenes. Read for Tom and Cameron. My parents were there, of course. In Tom’s trailer, we had really good chemistry, and he’s like, “You know, I think my decision here is clear. I’ll leave it up to Cameron.” And that was it.’

Lipnicki previously told ABC News that he had been a ‘big fan’ of Cruise after his parents showed him Top Gun.

Working with Zellweger and his Top Gun idol was a thrill for Lipnicki.

‘They were like real parents,’ he said. ‘They were really, really kind to me and showed me the ropes. I felt at home. Everything felt really right — and I’ve never lost that feeling.’

He added: ‘It changed the trajectory of my life. It’s what made me realize what I wanted to spend the rest of my life pursuing. It’s full of very happy memories.’

After Jerry Maguire, Lipnicki then starred in Meego, Stuart Little and Like Mike.

He appeared in episodes of The Single Guy, Dawson’s Creek and The Jeff Foxworthy Show.

By the time high school rolled around, sports took priority over acting.

He played baseball and basketball and was on the water polo team.

But Lipnicki passed on college and returned to acting full time.

When a producer took a cursory look at the then-19-year-old and said, ‘You used to be cute. What happened?’ Lipnicki cried on the way home.

But the young actor ended up using the line in a witty, four-minute YouTube video he made in 2014 titled You Used to Be Cute.

Since then, he’s pursued acting with a thicker skin.

Besides Primetime, Lipnicki’s recent roles include the dark thriller Anywhere, released earlier this year; the 2025 feature film Sarah’s Oil; the 2025 thriller Cottonmouth; and Camp Pleasant Lake, another horror flick that came out in 2024.

Iowa Teacher Found Dead in Reservoir After Trying to Save 10-Year-Old Student

An Iowa teacher who died at a reservoir alongside one of her 10-year-old students made a desperate attempt to rescue the boy, his grieving father said Friday.

Ahmed Osman, a fifth grader at Borlaug Elementary School, entered the Coralville Lake Reservoir during a school field trip Tuesday. His teacher, 24-year-old Hannah Jorgensen, followed him into the water, Ahmed’s father, Mohamed Osman, told The New York Times.

“We didn’t believe he would leave us this soon,” Mohamed said. He described his son as a child with “a lot of dreams,” including hopes of becoming a doctor or professional soccer player.

Ahmed and his classmates had been taking part in a five-day educational trip at the MacBride Nature Recreation Area when the fatal incident occurred.

Authorities have not said exactly when Ahmed entered the reservoir. His body was located Wednesday, one day after search teams recovered Jorgensen’s remains.

The students were participating in the University of Iowa’s “School of the Wild” program, which gives children hands-on lessons about nature in the park. The recreation area is leased to the university by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, according to The Times.

Ahmed’s family came to the United States from Sudan in 2011. His father remembered him as an enthusiastic soccer fan and a gifted student who stood out for his ability in mathematics.

Mohamed said dozens of Sudanese immigrants traveled to the park to grieve and support the family after Ahmed’s death.

Before joining Borlaug Elementary, Jorgensen had taught at several other schools across Iowa.

“Hannah and Ahmed were so much more than members of our school community,” the Iowa City School District said in a Facebook statement.

The district added that their loss would be deeply felt “in the classrooms and hallways of Borlaug,” by those who knew and loved them, and across the wider Iowa City school community.

A large search-and-recovery operation was launched at the reservoir. The response involved the Johnson County Metro Dive Team, area fire departments, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Iowa State Patrol, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and medical personnel, authorities said.

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds also expressed her sympathy to Borlaug Elementary students, teachers and staff.

“This unimaginable loss touches the entire Borlaug Elementary community and Iowa City School District,” Reynolds said in a statement.

She added: “Please know that Iowans across our state are standing with you in the difficult days ahead.”

Erika Kirk Reacts to University Report on Husband’s Assassination

0

Utah Valley University has released a 158-page independent review examining the events surrounding the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, who was shot and killed during a public speaking appearance in the campus’s central courtyard last year.

The Lake Forest Group conducted the review at the university’s request. Its 10 “key findings” are intended to strengthen security at future events. The report concluded that no one at UVU acted “in bad faith or in willful and wanton disregard for the safety of others.”

The investigators found, however, that UVU applied its own policies “significantly inconsistently.” They also determined that security measures were inadequate for a high-profile outdoor gathering and that no member of the university police department had been assigned to monitor campus security cameras.

The reviewers also called for a reassessment of staffing levels and training to reflect the university’s size and the potential risks associated with major events.

The report noted that universities have developed systems to identify and prevent internal threats since the 2007 Virginia Tech shooting. Those safeguards did not apply in Kirk’s case, investigators said, because the man accused of killing him, Tyler Robinson, had no connection to UVU.

The review also assembled a timeline of major developments leading up to Kirk’s appearance at UVU, spanning July 10 through Sept. 9, 2025. It identified several “key decision points” beginning Aug. 25 and continuing through the day Kirk was killed, Sept. 10.

On Aug. 25, UVU officials had concerns about their ability to secure the outdoor courtyard, yet the location remained the planned venue, according to the review. The event was approved two days later without a documented security assessment plan. University police and TPUSA security held their “first direct security coordination” on Sept. 3, one week before the event.

On Sept. 8, TPUSA organizers voiced concerns about access to rooftops overlooking the area where Kirk was scheduled to speak. The report says UVU Police Chief Jeffrey Long texted TPUSA security supervisor Dan Flood, “We got you covered.” Investigators said the message referred to the Hall of Flags outdoor pedestrian walkway.

Flood came to campus in person with the TPUSA security team on Sept. 10.

“Dan Flood, TPUSA Security Supervisor, texted Chief Long advising that TPUSA security personnel had arrived on campus,” the report states. “Chief Long engaged in a series of text communications with Flood, to include several regarding individuals located on the Hall of Flags outdoor pedestrian walkway and the Fountain Courtyard area where a canopy would be set up where Kirk would be speaking. These text exchanges revealed the primary security focus for TPUSA was the Hall of Flags outdoor pedestrian walkway above the canopy.”

That description differs from the Kirk family’s notice of claim against UVU, filed last week. The family’s filing identified the Sorensen Center rooftop—not the Hall of Flags walkway—as an area of concern.

The Hall of Flags walkway was closed during the event, but the review found that TPUSA security personnel never held an in-person meeting with university police.

Prosecutors allege that Robinson ultimately climbed onto the Losee Center, northeast of the courtyard, and fired the shot that killed Kirk.

The Hall of Flags walkway sits directly above the area where Kirk was speaking. The Sorenson Center is north of the courtyard, while the Losee Center is northeast of it.

“This report reaffirms the facts we laid out in our Notice of Claim: that UVU security was woefully understaffed and unprepared to manage the obvious risks associated with an event of this nature,” Kirk family attorney Brett Parkinson said in a statement to News Media Friday. “UVU hosted this event, and in doing so, assumed responsibility for the safety of all in attendance, including Charlie.”

As the family alleged in its filing last week, University Police Chief Jeffrey Long allegedly told Turning Point USA organizers, “I got you covered,” after they raised concerns about rooftop access above the courtyard where Kirk was later shot and killed by a sniper.

“The buck stopped with UVU leadership and law enforcement,” Parkinson said. “Justice for Charlie and his family requires true accountability for UVU’s fatal shortcomings that day.”

A university spokesperson told Fox News that the school has no further comment beyond a statement released on behalf of UVU President Dr. Jon Anderson.

“September 10 will always be part of UVU’s history, but it will not define our future,” he said. “Our responsibility is to care for our community, learn from the findings of this review, and follow through on its recommendations. This requires humility, an honest examination of our policies and practices, and a commitment to act on what we learn.”

Two Arrested in Drug Bust Near Ole Miss as Mystery Deepens

Two employees at a smoke shop near the University of Mississippi have been arrested on drug charges, days after the suspected kratom overdose deaths of two students.

Police searched the store, located about one mile from the Oxford campus and near where Aidan Hamilton, 18, and Robert Strang, 20, died earlier this week.

Yahya Mohamed Mosleh, 51, and Islam Mohamed, 18, were arrested and booked on suspicion of possessing Schedule 1 drugs with intent to distribute.

Oxford Police said investigators seized more than 500 units of kratom, as well as THC cartridges, gummies and other suspected drugs.

Police also noted that the store’s owner, 40-year-old Amer Alowdi, had previously been indicted on drug-trafficking charges and has since left the country.

“This remains an active investigation. Additional information will be released when appropriate,” police said. Authorities have not linked the arrests to the students’ deaths.

Friends who spoke with The Daily Mississippian identified the students. Hamilton was a freshman from Colorado, while Strang was a junior from Georgia.

According to the outlet, law enforcement officers responded to Stewart Hall, where they attempted to perform CPR on Hamilton.

Strang was later found dead at an off-campus home on Van Buren Avenue, sources told the outlet.

In a statement, Strang’s family said they were “heartbroken by the loss of our dear son” and were trying to process the “unimaginable loss”

Last month, Aidan’s mother, Kathie, shared a photograph of him inside his dorm and outside the university on Facebook.

She described herself and her husband, Peter, as “empty nesters,” writing: “We are officially empty nesters – this is going to take some getting used to!!!!”

In a statement to Fox News, Scott Sayres, an attorney for Strang’s family, said: “We are heartbroken by the loss of our dear son and are trying to process this unimaginable loss.

“We are deeply grateful for the incredible outpouring of love, prayers and support from so many beloved friends and family. Their kindness has meant more to our family than we can ever express.”

Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Dr. Shawnboda Mead announced the students’ deaths on Tuesday.

Soon after the announcement, Mead pushed back against rumors circulating on social media that additional students might be unaccounted for.

“We encourage our community not to speculate about the circumstances or repeat information that has not been officially confirmed,” she said.

However, the Lafayette County Metro Narcotics Unit said in a social media post that “packaged kratom” had been found during both investigations into the deaths.

Kratom, an unregulated herbal extract, acts as a mild stimulant that people use for energy, pain relief, and managing withdrawal. It acts as an opioid in large doses.

The substance was sold from an unnamed retail store, police said. It is unclear if kratom or other substances played a role in their deaths, the agency said.

Authorities have warned people to refrain from ingesting kratom or other substances that have not been prescribed by a medical professional.

‘Local, state, and federal partners are working collaboratively to gather the facts and provide answers as quickly and responsibly as possible,’ the agency said.

‘We are also working closely with the families involved and ask that their privacy be respected during an incredibly difficult time.’

Police also reminded the community that Narcan, an over-the-counter medication that reverses an opioid overdose, is available in vending machines across campus.

The university echoed the police, stating that their thoughts are with the friends, family, and loved ones of the two students.

Michael continued: “The one time that you know, without any doubt in your mind, that you’re meant to be with someone. Happy Birthday Catherine! I love you always and forever! ♥️ @catherinezetajones.”

His message featured an excerpt from One Helluva Ride!, the actor’s memoir scheduled for release next month.

Catherine replied in the comments: “Thank you darling. Thank you. Happy Birthday to you too my love. ♥️”

The couple married in 2000 and have two children together: son Dylan, 26, and daughter Carys, 23.

The birthday exchange came one day after Catherine made a glamorous appearance at the London premiere of her new thriller series, Kill Jackie.

In the eight-part Prime Video drama, she plays Jackie Price, a former international drug smuggler who has spent two decades living under the radar as an art dealer.

Jackie’s carefully protected life is shattered when an elite team of assassins is hired to kill her, forcing her to confront her dangerous past.

At the Curzon Bloomsbury premiere, Catherine channelled classic Hollywood glamour in a shimmering silver sequin gown with a strapless corset-style bodice and matching cape.

She completed the look with strappy silver Sole Bliss heels, loose waves in her brunette hair and bronzed makeup.

Kill Jackie is adapted from Aidan Truhen’s 2018 novel The Price You Pay. Truhen is the pseudonym of Nick Harkaway, whose father was the celebrated spy novelist David Cornwell, better known as John le Carré.

In the series, Jackie has enjoyed a luxurious lifestyle for 20 years, travelling the world and selling fine art while doing everything possible to remain anonymous after fleeing her life as an international drug smuggler.

But just as life starts to feel a little boring, it takes a sudden lethal turn when she discovers that The Seven Demons, a squad of the world’s most terrifying hitmen, have been hired to kill her.

Assuming someone from her past is behind it, Jackie unleashes her old instincts and embarks on a wild, dangerous game plan – to take down The Demons one by one before they kill her.

However, she soon realises her own demons are much more terrifying than the ruthless killers on her trail and her buried secrets lead her closer to home, with surprising consequences.

Appearing alongside Catherine are Daniel Ings, Sidse Babett Knudsen, Óscar Jaenada, Hattie Hook, Darci Shaw, Raff Law, Enzo Cilenti, Christine Adams, Julian Rhind-Tutt and Karlis Arnolds Avots.

The premiere comes just after Catherine insisted her children with Michael have had no more advantage than any other actor as they follow their parents and grandparents into the industry.

Her husband Michael is a double Academy Award winner and the son of Hollywood legend Kirk Douglas, who died in 2020.

Speaking to Nuala McGovern on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour, Catherine was asked about her recent claim that the nepo-baby label often attributed to her children is ‘horrific’.

Doubling down on her stance, the Welsh star insisted that ‘if it was any other industry whether it be finance or business, or if you’re a lawyer, or I know all my grown-up surgeon doctor friends have kids going into that industry, and they don’t get labelled.’

‘I think, more importantly, I’m married to the ultimate nepo baby. My husband was the son of Kirk Douglas, the son of Spartacus, you know? And he’s done pretty good on his own,’ Catherine continued.

‘And so I think it’s unfortunate that with the intense scrutiny young people have, not just my kids or celebrity kids, just generally, they get slaughtered by AI images of perfection, or this and that. They don’t need another tag, I think it’s very unfortunate.’

When McGovern pointed out that many people think the children of celebrities have access to advantages that other actors don’t have, Catherine was adamant, exclaiming: ‘No, no, no quite opposite. First of all, they have so much to prove.

‘That “oh! It’s in your genes, it’s in your blood”. It’s like “No, actually I have a true passion and love of the craft”.’

The actress’s children are the next branch on a Hollywood family tree that also includes Michael’s mother, the actor Diana Dill. His eldest son, Cameron, who he shares with his ex-wife Diandra Luker, is also an actor.

Michael has also hit back at the nepo-baby label, insisting in a 2024 interview: ‘I don’t know a father in whatever business, be it a plumber or a contractor or a carpenter, who doesn’t try to help his son join him.’

Nevada AG Sparks Fury by Backing Pardon for Pregnant Woman’s Killer

Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford has backed a clemency bid for a man convicted in the 2015 killing of a pregnant woman and her unborn child.

Norman Smith, 30, appeared before the Nevada parole board after Ford, who is seeking reelection, sponsored his application.

Smith fatally shot Tinesha Adams on December 13, 2015, during a confrontation involving a large group in an O’Reilly’s parking lot. The dispute began after Adams confronted her on-and-off boyfriend, Chris Cooper, at an Applebee’s restaurant.

Smith was under house arrest when the incident occurred. In 2017, he received a sentence of 10 to 39 years in prison for an armed robbery conviction. Two years later, he was sentenced in Adams’ death, with the two terms ordered to run concurrently.

Ford’s involvement began after Smith’s mother, a cancer-stricken schoolteacher, asked him to place her son’s request for a sentencing change before the parole board.

A spokesperson for Ford’s office told 8 News Now that the attorney general agreed after receiving “a letter of support from the prosecutor in the case.”

The office said Ford made clear that he would not promise to support clemency or a sentence reduction. “But [he] informed Mr. Smith’s mother that he would not guarantee her that he would vote in favor of clemency or a sentence modification,” the spokesperson told 8 News Now.

In one letter, Chief Deputy District Attorney Michael J. Schwartzer outlined the case and urged the board to consider the victim’s family, who attended court proceedings, as well as Smith’s earlier armed robbery conviction.

In a separate 2025 letter, Schwartzer wrote to the parole board in his personal capacity rather than as a representative of the attorney general’s office. In that letter, he said he supported granting Smith parole on the robbery sentence.

Schwartzer wrote that Smith had “taken responsibility” for his crimes and had received a “significantly higher prison sentence for his role in this [robbery] case than any of his co-defendants.”

The district attorney’s office told 8 News Now on Thursday that Schwartzer did not oppose probation in the robbery case because Smith would remain incarcerated for Adams’ manslaughter.

Smith appeared before the board on September 15. Ford was scheduled to attend but was absent because of a family emergency, according to 8 News Now.

The parole board rejected Smith’s clemency request.

After returning from the emergency, Ford declined to answer questions about his absence, Fox News reported. The decision has drawn sharp criticism, with some questioning whether Ford acted primarily out of sympathy for Smith’s ill mother.

The confrontation began at an Applebee’s, where Adams approached Cooper. He had been eating with Smith, Smith’s girlfriend Bobbi Williams, and Williams’ sister Alexzandrea Williams, who was dating Cooper.

Cooper spoke with Adams inside her car before returning to the restaurant and calling his mother to pick him and the others up.

Adams allegedly followed the group of five from the restaurant to O’Reilly’s, where Cooper’s mom had pulled in after noticing that Adams was following them.

Two other cars, holding Adams’ family members, arrived shortly after. The large group got into an argument, with many shoving and pushing people. Adams also pepper-sprayed multiple people, including Cooper.

At one point, Smith, who prosecutors said did not get along with Adams, grabbed the pregnant woman and threw her to the ground. This caused Cooper to come over. He grabbed hold of his ex-girlfriend to ‘calm her down,’ and that’s when she pepper-sprayed him, the letter said.

She then ran off to pepper-spray the Williams sisters, who were still inside Cooper’s mother’s car. Smith then pulled her out of the vehicle and threw her to the ground again.

The two started to ‘go at each other,’ and at one point, Smith yelled: ‘I’m going to shoot!’

Seconds later, a ‘pow’ sound was heard by one of Adams’ family members, who was attempting to separate the pair.

The family member later testified that she saw Smith with his right arm extended and a gun in his hand.

When police arrived at the scene, they were informed that Smith had shot Adams, who was visibly pregnant.

Prosecutor Michael J Schwartzer said he was for a parole hearing on Smith's robbery case, but only because Smith would still be serving his sentence for Adams' death. He was sentenced to 10 to 39 years in the robbery case, which runs concurrently with his manslaughter conviction

Smith would tell a police officer he found the gun on the ground and picked it up because he feared someone would shoot him. While attempting to put it in his sweatshirt’s pocket, he said he was pushed, causing his finger to pull the trigger.

He admitted he was the one who shot Adams and claimed it was an accident.

Smith, who was a part of the YNIC street gang, was on house arrest at the time for the armed robbery. He was later sentenced to 10 to 39 years in 2017.

For the shooting of Adams, a jury later found him guilty of voluntary manslaughter with use of a deadly weapon in 2019. His sentence was ordered to run concurrently with the robbery one.

Adams’ family showed up every day for the trial, Schwartzer noted.
