Is Your Superannuation on Track? Compare With Australians Your Age

0

Millions of Australians are relying on their superannuation to support them in retirement, yet many could find their savings fall below what they need for a comfortable lifestyle.

A healthy super balance can play a major role in retirement, helping cover regular household expenses, medical bills, leisure activities and unexpected costs after full-time work ends.

Checking how your superannuation compares with balances held by people in the same age group can offer a useful guide. Figures from the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia (ASFA), published by Rest Super, show average super balances by age and gender.

In your 40s

Men aged between 40 and 44 had an average superannuation balance of $140,680, compared with $109,209 for women in the same age group.

Among Australians aged 45 to 49, men held an average of $193,501 in super, while the average balance for women was $147,146.

In your 50s

For those aged 50 to 54, the average super balance stood at $254,071 for men and $190,175 for women.

Millions of Australians are counting on their superannuation savings to deliver a comfortable retirement, but many may not be on track.

Having enough superannuation can make a significant difference to a retiree's quality of life after work, covering everything from everyday living expenses and healthcare costs to leisure activities and unexpected bills

Adequate superannuation can significantly improve quality of life in retirement, helping pay for essentials, healthcare, hobbies, travel and unexpected expenses.

The average superannuation balance for men aged 55 to 59 was $319,743. For women in that age bracket, it was $242,945.

In your 60s

Australians aged 60 to 64 had average balances of $395,852 for men and $313,360 for women.

By age 65 to 69, men had an average super balance of $448,518, compared with $392,274 for women.

How much super will you need in retirement?

ASFA assesses retirement needs using two key benchmarks: a modest retirement and a comfortable retirement.

The comfortable retirement standard goes beyond covering the basics. It is intended to support everyday living costs while also allowing retirees to enjoy travel, hobbies and social activities.

ASFA estimates that a single homeowner needs $55,923 a year for a comfortable retirement. Homeowner couples require an estimated $78,566 annually.

Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia figures published by Rest Super show average balances by age and gender

ASFA figures published by Rest Super outline average superannuation balances across different age groups and between men and women.

ASFA defines a modest retirement as a lifestyle slightly above what can be achieved through the Age Pension alone. It includes basic private health insurance, along with occasional social, leisure and recreational activities.

For a modest retirement, ASFA says single homeowners need $36,434 a year, while homeowner couples need $52,473 annually.

How to catch up on your super

Rest Super says workers may want to consider making voluntary contributions in addition to their employer’s compulsory super payments, depending on their personal circumstances.

Regular extra contributions, even relatively small ones, may grow through compound investment returns over time. However, investment returns are not guaranteed.

Rest Super also recommends reviewing super fund fees and investment performance regularly. Small differences in costs and returns can make a substantial difference to retirement savings over several decades.

Rest Super says consolidating multiple accounts may help some members avoid duplicate fees and insurance premiums, but warns they should first check whether they would lose insurance cover or other benefits.

The figures are general benchmarks only and do not take into account individual circumstances. Australians should consider seeking licensed financial advice before making major changes to their superannuation.

Northeast US Flights Disrupted by Air Traffic Control Problems

0

Communications lines at a major Philadelphia air traffic control facility were restored Monday evening, enabling airports across the U.S. Northeast to begin returning to normal after hours of widespread disruptions, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said.

The outage led to hundreds of canceled flights, including more than 600 at Newark Liberty International Airport, and affected every major airport serving the New York City region. Duffy cautioned in an online post that clearing the backlog of delays would take time even after service was restored.

The Federal Aviation Administration facility in Philadelphia lost its main communications line earlier Monday. A backup fiber-optic line was then accidentally cut by workers involved in railroad construction, leaving air traffic controllers without radar and communications capabilities for several hours.

Newark experienced some of the most severe consequences. Commercial air traffic nearly stopped, with no commercial flights arriving at the airport from roughly 9:40 a.m. until shortly after 5:20 p.m. local time, according to flight-tracking service Flightradar24.

Philadelphia International Airport recorded more than 200 canceled arrivals and departures. LaGuardia and Kennedy airports in New York were also affected, though flights at all three airports had begun to resume by Monday evening.

Several airlines offered passengers the option to rebook at no additional cost. The FAA urged travelers to verify their flight status before leaving for the airport.

The disruption unfolded as President Donald Trump and a large number of foreign leaders traveled to New York for the United Nations General Assembly.

Cindy Phan said her morning flight from Newark to Minneapolis was delayed repeatedly before she learned at about 3 p.m. that it had been canceled and moved to Tuesday. The change forced her to arrange and pay for an additional hotel night.

“We could have had a whole day in New York,” Phan said. She added that she was eager to return home to her “two little Chihuahua babies.”

Shannon Franke and her husband were traveling from Nashville through Chicago when they learned that the final Southwest leg of their journey to Philadelphia had been canceled. The couple had visited Nashville to watch the Philadelphia Eagles defeat the Tennessee Titans 24-20 on a last-second touchdown Sunday.

Stranded in Chicago, the couple managed to secure a hotel room and chose to make the most of the unexpected stop with some deep-dish pizza, Franke said.

“We’re just making the best of it,” Franke said. “If the Eagles would have lost … it would have been so much worse.”

The latest technical failure involved the same Philadelphia FAA facility that contributed to repeated disruptions at Newark Airport last spring.

Regional air traffic control centers rely on two connections to carry radar and communications data: a primary circuit and a backup line. The FAA said the primary circuit failed Monday morning, and the attempted switch to the backup revealed that its fiber-optic cable had also been severed.

Duffy initially attributed the damage to an Amtrak construction crew. Amtrak disputed that account and said a New Jersey Transit construction crew working between Newark and New Brunswick, New Jersey, was responsible.

FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said the agency was prioritizing repairs to the primary connection, including installation of a new circuit, while crews worked simultaneously to restore the backup fiber line. Verizon also said its technicians were assisting with the restoration.

Bedford described the fiber-optic damage as “massive” and said repairs would take several hours, according to a video posted online by a CBS reporter.

The failed primary circuit is already scheduled for replacement as part of a major modernization of the nation’s air traffic control system.

The FAA also began testing a new artificial intelligence-assisted computer system Monday. The technology is designed to help identify scheduling conflicts and weather-related problems so controllers can reroute flights. Initial testing is limited to the Washington, D.C., area, however, and there was no indication that it played any role in the Northeast outage.

Presley Gerber’s Ex Shares Emotional Tribute After His Death at 27

0

Charlotte D’Alessio has shared an emotional tribute to her former boyfriend, Presley Gerber, following the 27-year-old’s sudden death on Sunday.

The 28-year-old Canadian model, who was in a relationship with Presley for about two years from 2018, posted a collection of personal photos of the couple. She said they had shared a “pure love” and admitted she was “very angry” over his death.

Presley, the only son of supermodel Cindy Crawford, 60, and millionaire businessman Rande Gerber, 64, died at a rehabilitation facility in Los Angeles. His death is being investigated as a suspected overdose.

D’Alessio looked back on their relationship alongside a photograph of the pair embracing on a dock, with the model wearing a bikini beside Presley.

“Shared a pure love with you & for that I thank & honor your life. You deserved more time. You deserved more life. Very angry ab this,” she wrote across the image.

On a second black-and-white photograph showing the couple hugging, she added: “Love you Pres. always. Up there, down here. don’t ever doubt that. we all love you so much. I hope you can feel it.”

She also posted what appeared to be a photograph from a costume party, in which the pair posed together while holding prop guns.

Another image showed Presley relaxing on a bed with a rolled-up cigarette in his mouth as he stroked a small white dog.

D’Alessio also shared a nostalgic video of Presley walking toward the ocean, with the white dog following closely behind.

“I will always remember you this way,” she wrote over the clip.

The pair reportedly met through Presley’s sister, Kaia Gerber, 25, in December 2017.

Before and after his relationship with D’Alessio, Presley was also linked to reality television star Lexi Wood in 2022 and model Cayley King in 2017.

Presley’s death was announced on Sunday after a years-long struggle involving drugs, panic attacks and his mental health.

A Santa Monica Police Department spokesperson told The Daily Mail on Monday that emergency services were called to the luxury rehabilitation facility where Presley had been staying on Sunday morning. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

“On September 20, 2026, at approximately 9.35am, Santa Monica Police Department officers responded to a report of a possible overdose in the 1000 block of Berkeley Street. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male who was deceased,” the statement said.

‘SMPD detectives are investigating the death as a suspected overdose. At this time, there is no indication of foul play. The investigation remains ongoing.’

People reports dispatch recordings show a call went out at 9.35am on Sunday for a ‘cardiac arrest’ at the unnamed facility.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner has not determined the official cause of death yet but the autopsy was completed as of Monday morning and Presley’s body was ready for release.

Per TMZ, Presley had been staying in a separate house on the grounds of the LA rehab, and had roommates. It was also claimed Presley had only checked into the rehab on Saturday night, hours before his death.

The Daily Mail has reached out to representatives for the Gerber family and has yet to hear back.

The medical examiner’s office told People on Monday: ‘Death was pronounced at 09.45 hours on September 20, 2026, by responding paramedics.’

The model had been open about his decade-long struggle with drug addiction and mental health struggles.

Earlier this year, he posted about having a ‘Pre-ibogaine flood dose’ at a Mexican treatment clinic, a single, high-dose administration of the naturally occurring psychoactive substance ibogaine.

Ibogaine is derived from an African shrub and is reported to help withdrawal symptoms. The high dose is designed to induce a profound ‘reset.’

Presley’s parents and his sister Kaia praised him for his ‘courage’ in response to his post about starting the treatment in March.

Crawford commented: ‘You are a warrior! Walked thru the fire to find yourself! So proud!’ while Kaia added: ‘That’s my brother I am so damn proud.’

And Rande wrote: ‘I’m so proud of you and your courage. Facing what’s hard takes real strength and watching you find your way back to yourself is everything. I love you so much.’

Ibogaine is classified as a Schedule I controlled substance in the US but it is legal or permitted on prescription in countries such as Canada and Brazil while it is used in specialized clinics in Mexico.

Presley praised the Beond Ibogaine clinic in Cancun – where treatment starts at $12,500 for a ten-day program – for its ‘incredible, caring, kind and on-their-s*** team.’

Presley said in a video caption: ‘I was absolutely terrified, and I knew I would be again if I ever had to face something like this (helps to not go into the situations you do that get ya there but that’s life sometimes.)

‘My mantras were love yourself and lis gotta be the last time for this reason. letting go of control didn’t come easy, but I trusted there was something bigger than me guiding it.’

‘I knew why i was there. I faced what I had been running from, and somewhere in all of it, i started finding my way back to myself… We shall see… Praying it’s the last time I have to come back.

‘Next time I’d like to choose And absolutely can’t forget the incredible caring kind and on-their-s*** team. Helps a lot haha. And I made some dope ass friends there #iboga #ibogaine #rewireyourbrain #loveyourself #mentalhealth.’

Beond Ibogaine commented on the post at the time, writing: ‘Thank you for sharing this so openly. We know how much courage that moment takes, and we’re really proud of you for facing it with so much honesty and heart. It was an honor to support you.’

Beond Ibogaine’s website states that ‘Ingesting a large enough dose induces a temporary psychedelic experience that can last several hours, normally with no significant side-effects.’

Despite its ban, public figures including singer Melissa Etheridge, who lost her 21-year-old son Beckett to a fentanyl overdose in 2020, and Khloe Kardashian’s ex-husband Lamar Odom have endorsed Ibogaine’s benefits.

Last November, Presley revealed he had taken a step back from social media to ‘take care of my own mental health for a bit.’

One month later, he opened up about his personal life in a candid social media video. He started sharing ‘Mental Health Mondays’ videos on his Instagram. In one, he listed the medication he takes for ‘night terrors’ and ‘panic attacks.’

‘I feel like honesty is the best policy,’ he began.

He also said his use of medication had been ‘fluctuating up and down depending on what’s been going on in my life.’

‘Unfortunately, I’ve had a lot of loss in many different forms recently, so that is not an excuse, but it’s the reason why I am where I’m at now,’ he shared.

He did not go into detail about the ‘loss’ he referenced but went on to explain that he would experience panic attacks that were ‘really, really bad.’

In one particularly bleak admission, he confessed he no longer even knew precisely how much of one medication he had been taking.

‘Who f***ing knows anymore,’ he said.

Earlier this year, he posted about having a 'Pre-ibogaine flood dose' at a Mexican treatment clinic, a single, high-dose administration of the naturally occurring psychoactive substance ibogaine

The tragedy cuts short the life of a model who had seemingly been destined to follow his famous mother into fashion from an early age.

A spokesman for Crawford told the Daily Mail on Sunday: ‘The family is asking for privacy during this very difficult and painful time.’

Presley started modeling at age 15 and was featured in campaigns for fashion labels such as Dolce & Gabbana and Calvin Klein.

Presley was signed to IMG models and appeared in a 2018 Pepsi ad with his mother.

He also struggled with mental health at a young age and was arrested for driving under the influence in 2019.

Presley had also talked about the lack of ‘direction’ he has from doctors when it comes to his medication.

He spoke openly about feeling lost as he attempted to navigate his mental health problems – even revealing that he had seen 15 psychiatrists.

The model complained that doctors had given him an overwhelming array of medications but too little guidance about how to manage them.

His death comes just weeks after his younger sister Kaia opened up about the enormous toll her brother’s struggles had taken on their famous family – admitting the turmoil had effectively ‘leveled everyone.’

‘When something like that happens in a family, it kind of levels everyone,’ she told Vogue.

Kaia also revealed last month that watching her brother battle his problems led her to cast herself as the family’s ‘easy’ child and someone who did not want to add another burden for their parents.

She explained: ‘I think that’s also why I started to self-identify as the easy one and never wanted to ask for help. Because it felt like too much to have two children who were needing.’

But she also praised her brother’s willingness to strip away the secrecy surrounding his struggles.

She described his honesty and openness as ‘refreshing,’ contrasting it with the intensely private way their parents had traditionally handled family life.

Presley was open about his mental health struggles noting how he had issues from ‘a very young age’ – and labeled it as ‘the ultimate pandemic.’

During an appearance on the Studio 22 podcast in 2023, Presley had shared: ‘It is such a big part of my life. It’s a 24/7 job, and there’s so much to it.’

Even while struggling himself, Presley said he hoped his experiences might ultimately allow him to help others facing their own battles.

‘Having struggled with mental health, depression and some other things that come along with that, I think that whether I help one person or a hundred people get out of that place that I was in at one point in my life, that’s all I need to do,’ he said.

Presley Gerber, Cindy Crawford’s Son, Reportedly Dies at 27 as Cause of Death Emerges

Presley Gerber died at the age of 27 on Sunday at a rehabilitation facility, following struggles with substance use, panic attacks and his mental health.

He was the son of supermodel and entrepreneur Rande Gerber.

A spokesperson for the Santa Monica Police Department said emergency responders were dispatched Sunday morning to the luxury rehabilitation center where Presley had been staying.

Police said in a statement: “On September 20, 2026, at approximately 9:35 a.m., Santa Monica Police Department officers responded to a report of a possible overdose in the 1000 block of Berkeley Street. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male who was deceased.”

The statement added: “SMPD detectives are investigating the death as a suspected overdose. At this time, there is no indication of foul play. The investigation remains ongoing.”

An autopsy was carried out on Monday, although the “cause and manner of death” have not yet been established.

With the autopsy complete, Presley’s body was cleared for release.

A representative for Cindy, her husband Rande Gerber and their daughter Kaia Gerber confirmed Presley’s death on Sunday.

The family said: “The family is asking for privacy during this very difficult and painful time.”

In March, Presley shared on Instagram that he had undergone ibogaine treatment in Mexico.

Ibogaine is a psychoactive indole alkaloid derived from the root bark of the Tabernanthe iboga shrub. It has been used experimentally to address withdrawal symptoms and cravings linked to substances including alcohol, opioids and cocaine.

Cindy responded to the post at the time, writing: “You are a warrior! Walked thru the fire to find yourself! So proud!”

His father also wrote: “I’m so proud of you and your courage. Facing what’s hard takes real strength and watching you find your way back to yourself is everything. I love you so much.”

Presley had spoken publicly about his ongoing struggles with mental health, substance use and drug addiction.

His sister, Kaia, recently discussed her brother’s addiction while promoting her television show, The Shards.

She said: “When something like that happens in a family, it kind of levels everyone.”

Speaking to Vogue, Kaia added: “I think that’s also why I started to self-identify as the easy one and never wanted to ask for help. Because it felt like too much to have two children who were needing.”

Dolly Parton’s Nephew and Longtime Security Chief Fired From His Position

Bryan Seaver, Dolly Parton’s nephew and longtime head of security, has been removed from the position overseeing the singer’s properties less than a month after her death at age 80.

Seaver was given a notice on Wednesday, reviewed by TMZ, stating that he and the security companies protecting Parton’s Nashville home, museum and warehouse would be replaced.

People familiar with the situation told the outlet they believed Parton’s manager, Danny Nozell, and Pinnacle Bank were behind the decision to dismiss Seaver and his staff.

A replacement security team was sent to the properties on Wednesday, shortly after Seaver received the termination notice.

Sources close to Seaver said he and his associates were “dismayed by the unexpected and, so far, unexplained actions” taken following Parton’s August 25 death.

The Daily Mail has contacted Bryan Seaver, Danny Nozell and representatives of Pinnacle Bank for comment.

Dolly Parton’s nephew and longtime security chief Bryan Seaver has been dismissed from his position overseeing her properties, less than a month after the music icon died at 80

“We remain unshakably resolved to fulfill her final directive to protect her family, and we refuse to be intimidated by those whose actions we believe are being taken in bad faith,” Seaver’s representatives told TMZ.

His representatives also said they believed the measures were taken “with the intent to profit from the life of someone who willingly gave so much.”

According to TMZ, the notice sent to Seaver said the DP Dean Trust had taken responsibility for Parton’s business interests and properties after her death.

The report said Seaver continues to hold a personal interest in the trust.

Seaver’s mother, Cassie, is Parton’s sister. The late “Jolene” singer had selected him to announce her death publicly.

After Parton died on August 25 following a battle with cancer, Seaver appeared in a video sharing the news with fans.

“Dolly has lived in the light, and is in the arms of Jesus, surely met by [late husband] Carl, her parents, and countless others who have watched her and longed for her to meet them in the heavens,” Seaver said in the emotional video.

During the video, Seaver also explained that his father, Larry, had held the security role before him.

He said he had served as Parton’s head of security for the past “two decades” and had worked for her for approximately four decades.

‘I first went on the road with Dolly as a kid, getting a taste of the road life in the early 1980s,’ Seaver said. ‘Dolly opened doors not just for me, but for her entire family to reach the potential we didn’t even know was possible.

‘Dolly also opened doors for generations of singers, songwriters, musicians and dreamers from every walk of life and across every continent. By her example, we believed that anything was possible.’

He added, ‘She never saw a door she couldn’t open, and the doors she opened made and changed history. My family and I have shared a lifetime of beautiful memories with Dolly, but so have you.’

Parton has been well-remembered in the near month since her passing, which included an expansive tribute at the Primetime Emmy Awards last week which featured Reba McEntire and Sally Field.

Nashville International Airport will be renamed in Parton’s memory following a vote from the Metro Nashville Airport Authority Board of Commissioners weeks back.

LeBron James, Jessica Alba Among Stars at Monday Night Football

SoFi Stadium was packed with star power Monday night, and plenty of the biggest names in attendance were not wearing football helmets.

The Los Angeles Rams’ primetime matchup with the New York Giants attracted a high-profile crowd from across sports and entertainment.

Actress Jessica Alba was seen at the game with her boyfriend, actor Danny Ramirez. New Los Angeles Dodgers ace Tarik Skubal also attended his first Rams game since joining the back-to-back World Series champions.

LeBron James, the longtime Lakers superstar and newest member of the Philadelphia 76ers, appeared to get into the action from his suite by showing off his own quarterbacking skills.

After Matthew Stafford dropped down and delivered an unbelievable sidearm touchdown pass to Davante Adams, cameras captured James recreating the Rams quarterback’s throwing motion.

James was not the only sports icon in the building. Hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, “The Great One,” was seen in a suite with ESPN’s Pat McAfee, former Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce, and NBA stars Russell Westbrook and DeMar DeRozan.

Rams owner Stan Kroenke also visited the sideline before kickoff, taking in the scene at his $5-billion football palace. Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and current ESPN broadcaster Troy Aikman was on the field before heading to the “Monday Night Football” booth.

“Breaking Bad” stars Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul were also in attendance. The actors are partners in Dos Hombres, an award-winning mezcal and tequila brand.

Seven-time Olympic gold medalist Allyson Felix watched Stafford’s touchdown throws, while comedian Trevor Wallace followed the game from the Bootsy Bellows club on the field.

Bisexual AFL Star Mitch Brown Kisses Male Singer in New Video

0

Former West Coast player Mitch Brown shares an intimate kiss with a male pop star in a provocative new music video, while raising questions about whether the AFL is truly a safe place for gay players to come out.

The 37-year-old features as Australian artist ANDY’s romantic interest in the video for Can’t Wait, alongside rugby league pioneer Ian Roberts in a pointed exploration of sexuality and sporting culture.

In one scene, Brown kisses the singer on a football field. In another, he sprays blue electrolyte drink into ANDY’s mouth.

Brown, who came out publicly as bisexual in August 2025, said the role represented a dramatic shift from the scrutiny he worried about during his AFL career.

“I spent so much of my playing career being conscious of what I said, how I behaved and what people might assume about me, and now I’m on a footy field – although a different code – kissing another man for a music video,” he said.

“There’s a nice full-circle feeling to that.”

Former West Coast footballer Mitch Brown has kissed a male pop singer in a steamy new music video while questioning whether the AFL provides a safe environment for gay players to come out

Former West Coast footballer Mitch Brown kisses a male pop singer in a steamy new music video and questions whether the AFL offers a safe environment for gay players to come out.

Brown played 94 matches for West Coast from 2007 to 2016, keeping his sexuality private throughout his time in the AFL.

Since then, he has emerged as a prominent advocate for inclusion. His latest creative project has also prompted him to question the culture of the professional sport he once played.

In an interview with The Sydney Morning Herald, Brown highlighted what he sees as a contradiction in sport: physical contact between men is routinely accepted, while same-sex attraction can still create unease.

“In sports … you are putting your bodily fluids all over each other in the huddles and tackling, and that is like spit, and you’re sharing a drink bottle,” he said.

Brown said he would be surprised if AFL players or clubs publicly backed his involvement in the music video.

He also questioned whether the AFL’s current approach gives players enough confidence to speak honestly about their sexuality.

Brown is currently in a relationship with Lou Keck. He has spoken publicly about her support after he came out as bisexual in August 2025.

Brown is in a relationship with Lou Keck, who he has said supported him after he came out as bisexual in August 2025.

“Do I think the AFL and the clubs are providing a safe place and have the systems in place for a gay person to speak up? Well, if I’m going by the statistics, I would say no … I’ve been one of them that played and remained closeted. There is a broader issue at play here.”

The Can’t Wait video centres on a younger version of ANDY, whose real name is Andy Cook, as he struggles to understand and express his sexuality in a boys’ locker room.

Cook and Brown later portray opposing captains who kiss, while Roberts appears as an enraged football coach.

“It’s ‘yeah the boys’ meets ‘kiss the boys’,” Cook said.

Roberts, who came out as gay while playing for Manly in 1995, said taking part in the project was an obvious decision.

The former Australian Test prop said sporting environments continued to carry the damaging belief that attraction to men somehow made a male athlete less strong.

‘To be attracted to other men if you’re a man is almost feminised somehow,’ he said.

Cook said former NRL player Kane Evans’ coming-out story helped inspire the project, and he deliberately brought together people of different sexualities for the cast.

‘That’s why when I cast the music video, I didn’t just want it to be a locker room of queer people; it needed to be straight people, gay people, a whole boiling pot of people who are showing up authentically as themselves, and that doesn’t take away from anyone,’ he said.

While Cook acknowledged the video could divide audiences, he said watching the intimate scenes back had been an emotional experience.

‘Honestly, when we filmed them and watched it back for the first time, you could hear a pin drop,’ he told Rolling Stone Australia.

‘I think everyone could feel that we were commenting on something very real, very raw and very beautiful.’

For Brown, the visibility has also highlighted how isolated he can feel when pushing for change within football.

‘In terms of being a man and standing up for a better AFL culture, it’s quite lonely. It’s extremely lonely. It makes you feel like the AFL men’s players don’t care sometimes because you’re just, like, where are your voices?’ he said.

Nurse Accused of Driving 131 MPH in Crash That Killed Pregnant Mom, Ejected Unborn Baby Onto Road

California nurse Nicole Linton allegedly caused a high-speed crash that killed six people, including an eight-months-pregnant woman whose unborn child was expelled from her body and found in the roadway, prosecutors said.

Family members of the victims wept and left the courtroom during opening statements on Sept. 8 as prosecutors presented images from the 2022 collision, according to ABC7. Linton also cried during the proceedings, the New York Post reported.

“The defendant had plenty of time to stop, to brake, to swerve,” Deputy District Attorney Brittany Vannoy told jurors, according to the Los Angeles Times. “But instead she floored that gas pedal to 131 mph, ignored that red light, and barreled toward that intersection, killing six people.”

Linton faces six murder counts and has pleaded not guilty. Her defense attorneys maintain that she was suffering a mental health crisis before the crash and then experienced a seizure that caused her to lose control of the vehicle.

But a doctor who treated Linton after the collision previously testified that there was “no evidence of a neurological episode,” the Times reported.

Prosecutors say Linton, a traveling nurse from Texas, was driving her Mercedes-Benz through Windsor Hills on Aug. 4, 2022, when she accelerated to 131 mph and struck several vehicles.

The dead included Asherey Ryan, her 11-month-old son, Alonzo Quintero, Ryan’s boyfriend, Reynold Lester, and the couple’s unborn child, whom they intended to name Armani.

Ryan was eight months pregnant and on her way to a medical appointment. Her infant son was thrown from his car seat into a nearby parking lot, where a bystander found him.

“She went to go pick him up and realized his neck was broken and screamed, ‘The baby, the baby!’” Vannoy said, according to the Post. “She tries to perform CPR on Baby Alonzo but it was too late.”

Ryan’s unborn child was “ripped” from her womb in the impact, Vannoy said, according to the Post. ABC7 reported that the baby was found on the roadway with the umbilical cord still attached.

Two friends, Nathesia Lewis and Lynette Noble, who were traveling in another vehicle, also died in the crash.

Linton suffered little physical injury, but first responders said she appeared confused at the scene.

“She asked, ‘Did I kill people? Did I hurt people?’” emergency medical technician Isabel Schrama testified in 2024, according to the Los Angeles Times. “And then she started to, I would say, freak out.”

Vannoy also argued during opening statements that Linton had been frustrated with her assignment at Kaiser Permanente and angry with coworkers. According to the Times, the prosecutor said Linton “got in her car and channeled that fury, that frustration, into her driving.”

The prosecution cited a 2020 blog post written by Linton and titled “Bitter F- – -ing Nurse,” in which she complained about her life, the Times reported. Linton’s attorney argued that the post had no relevance to the case.

Linton obtained her California nursing license fewer than five months before the fatal collision.

“At that time, Ms. Linton did not have a criminal history or a record of discipline that would have precluded her from obtaining licensure; and, the BRN did not have any information calling her mental state into question,” a spokesperson for the California Board of Registered Nursing told FOX 11. “At this time, upon the request of counsel representing the BRN, Ms. Linton has been suspended from practicing nursing until the resolution of her criminal proceeding, or unless and until the court orders otherwise.”

A Kaiser spokesperson did not immediately respond to Oxygen’s request for comment.

After the tragedy, Kaiser described the Windsor Hills collision as “horrific.”

“It’s impossible to imagine the pain those involved are experiencing,” a spokesperson said in a statement to Fox 11. “Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy.” The company referred additional questions to law enforcement.

Oxygen could not reach Linton’s attorney for comment.

Alleged Hunting Error by Maryland Hunter Leaves Delaware Mother Dead

A Maryland hunter is accused of fatally shooting a woman after mistaking her for a deer as she walked through a Delaware field with her children, according to state police.

Walter Moorhead, 74, was arrested on manslaughter and other charges after shooting Santos Maria Chilel Soto, 39, on Friday evening in Ellendale, Delaware, state police said in a news release.

Soto was walking through an open field with a man and two children at about 7:40 p.m. when Moorhead, who was hunting deer from a ground blind, opened fire. A ground blind is a camouflaged structure hunters use to conceal themselves from wildlife.

Police said Moorhead believed he had seen a deer before firing his rifle and striking Soto.

State troopers responded and provided life-saving medical treatment at the scene. Soto was then taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Moorhead faces multiple felony charges, including manslaughter for recklessly causing another person’s death, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and three counts of first-degree reckless endangerment.

He was released from custody after posting a $43,000 cash bond.

The investigation remains ongoing.

A GoFundMe page described Soto as a mother of five children and a “beloved” aunt.

“Maria’s family is now facing the overwhelming pain of this sudden loss while also trying to make sure she is laid to rest with dignity,” the fundraiser says. “This heartbreaking situation has placed a heavy financial burden on the family at a time when they are grieving deeply.”

The fundraiser was created to help pay for funeral expenses and transport Soto’s body to Guatemala. About $12,000 had been raised by Monday evening.

‘Pew pew’: Beau Lamarre-Condon’s alleged comment about murders

0

Beau Lamarre-Condon’s lawyer has told the court that his client entered the home of his former boyfriend, Jesse Baird, to retrieve jewellery—not to murder him.

In opening remarks on Tuesday, barrister John Stratton SC said Lamarre-Condon wanted to avoid the embarrassment of seeing Baird that morning.

The court heard he waited until the property was empty before entering, wearing an Uber Eats uniform so he could appear to be making a delivery if someone answered the door.

According to Mr Stratton, Baird was armed with a knife and failed to recognise Lamarre-Condon, who was wearing a motorcycle helmet and high-visibility clothing.

Lamarre-Condon had his firearm with him because his police training instructed him never to leave a gun unattended in a car, where it could be stolen, the court was told.

Mr Stratton said Baird seized the firearm during a struggle, causing it to discharge and fatally injure him.

The weapon was thrown into the living room before Lamarre-Condon moved along the hallway while calling Triple-0, the court heard.

He then encountered Luke Davies, who was Baird’s new partner.

Lamarre-Condon seized Davies by the arm and moved the gun away from his own body. Mr Stratton said Davies then pulled the trigger and was fatally shot.

The defence barrister said Lamarre-Condon had no intention of hurting anyone in Paddington that day and was acting in self-defence.

‘After that, the accused panicked, he knew it looked bad,’ Mr Stratton said.

‘He cleaned up as much as he could and threw the knife into the yard of a house on Lawson street.’

Mr Stratton also rejected the claim that his client had broken into Baird’s home in August 2023, saying Lamarre-Condon entered using a key he had been given.

The court heard Lamarre-Condon struggled to deal with the end of the relationship and engaged in what Mr Stratton described as ‘stupid things’, including checking Baird’s phone and deleting messages.

The lawyer said Lamarre-Condon had never threatened Baird and that the relationship had not involved a pattern of escalating violence.

The trial’s first witness was due to give evidence after morning tea at 11.50am.
