Miami fans got an extra five minutes to savor a 70-point blowout in South Beach.

No. 7 Miami’s rout of Florida A&M became so one-sided that the teams used a little-known rule to cut five minutes from the fourth quarter of the Hurricanes’ 77-7 home victory.

NCAA rules allow teams to shorten the clock if both head coaches and the referee agree.

“Any time during the game, the playing time of any remaining period or periods may be shortened by mutual agreement of the opposing head coaches and the referee,” the NCAA rulebook states.

Even Florida A&M’s most optimistic supporters likely did not expect Thursday’s matchup between the national runners-up and an FCS program to be close. Miami entered as a 59.5-point favorite.

The outcome was never in doubt. Miami led 21-0 after the first quarter, 49-0 at halftime and 77-0 heading into the final period, prompting the agreement to shorten the fourth quarter by five minutes.

Florida A&M avoided the shutout with a 72-yard fumble return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Rattlers coach Quinn Fordham Gray Jr. appeared to say something to Miami coach Mario Cristobal during their postgame handshake, though the tone of the exchange was difficult to determine.

Schools rarely use the provision, though Arizona State and Morgan State also agreed to trim five minutes from the fourth quarter during the Sun Devils’ 70-7 win on Sept. 5.

“The referees came over and said coach from the other side asked if we could shorten the quarter, and I said, ‘Yeah, of course, whatever he wants, we’ll do,’” Arizona State coach Kenny Dillingham said last week. “I’ve never been a part of a game like that. Didn’t know that was legal. I learned something today.

“I just said, ‘Whatever he wants.’ I don’t know if he wants to be seven minutes, five minutes, 10 minutes…”

Despite the game ending early and Cristobal emptying his bench, Miami posted video-game-like numbers while improving to 2-0.

The Hurricanes’ 856 yards of total offense set the new school record and their 77 points matched the program-high, while their 42 first downs set an ACC record.

Miami QB and Heisman favorite Darian Mesnah completed 14 of 15 passes for 252 yards and three touchdowns in a near-perfect performance.

Miami has outscored its opponents 122-13 through two games and faces its toughest game to date next Friday when it visits Wake Forest.

“We had an opportunity to play a lot of guys and see how they fit into our plans and what their roles can be moving forward. Nowadays in college football, that’s invaluable,” Cristboal said.

“You have to play guys you really can’t look at the clock or the scoreboard. You just have to continue developing your roster, and we attempted to do that tonight.”

The sole juror who held out in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial was also the only Black member of the jury, according to a fellow panelist in a new interview.

Paula Devlin, an outspoken juror who joined the 11-member majority favoring a finding that Clancy was not criminally responsible for the deaths of her three young children, told “CBS Mornings” on Friday that the lone holdout was a Black man and the jury’s only person of color.

“Everybody else was White,” Devlin said.

“I have to sit with that for just a second,” host Gayle King replied during the interview.

Devlin said the jurors’ ages ranged from 22 to “70-ish.”

Judge William Sullivan declared a mistrial last week after the jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict. Jurors reported an 11-1 split, with the lone male holdout casting the only vote to convict Clancy of first-degree murder in the deaths of her children: 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson and 8-month-old Callan.

Michael J. Fox has spoken candidly about returning to acting and the challenges Parkinson’s disease has created, including its impact on his ability to learn and remember dialogue.

The 65-year-old actor, who was diagnosed with early-onset Parkinson’s at 29 in 1991, said he came out of retirement earlier than he had anticipated after finding a role in Shrinking that enabled him to simply ‘show up on set’ as himself.

Fox initially retired from acting in 2000, two years after he publicly revealed his diagnosis. He later made cameo appearances in television shows including Scrubs and The Good Wife, before stepping away from acting again in 2020.

Explaining why he made that decision, the acclaimed actor told People, ‘A new variable emerged: my ability to memorize lines.

‘There’s a time for everything, and the time for 12-hour workdays was behind me.’

Earlier this year, Fox joined the Harrison Ford-led Apple TV series Shrinking for its third season.

The Apple TV comedy was created by Fox’s friend Bill Lawrence. Fox said the part gave him the freedom to ‘use how I feel on any given day and channel it into the scene.’

In Shrinking, he plays Gerry, who forms a friendship with Ford’s Dr. Paul Rhoades as Paul navigates his own Parkinson’s diagnosis.

Fox was nominated for a Primetime Emmy in the Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series category, as the late Rob Reiner was announced as the winner over the weekend.

Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991 at age 29 while filming Doc Hollywood, after experiencing a sore shoulder.

The actor went public with his diagnosis in 1998.

Fox previously worked with Shrinking’s co-creator Lawrence on ABC’s Spin City. However, he left after season four in 2000 after his Parkinson’s symptoms worsened.

The dad-of-four also featured in a two-episode arc on Scrubs, another Lawrence-led series, where he played a genius doctor with severe OCD.

Fox has said the disease prompted him to largely retire from acting, devoting more time to spending time with his family and working for his foundation, The Michael J. Fox Foundation, which funds research and the search for a Parkinson’s disease cure

Most famously, Fox starred as teenager Marty McFly in the science fiction movie Back to the Future in 1985, as well as in the sequels Back to the Future Part II (in 1989) and Back to the Future III (in 1990).

He played Alex P Keaton on Family Ties from 1982 until 1989. 

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological disorder that causes the impairment and death of nerve cells that produce dopamine, a neurotransmitter that regulates body movements.

Without dopamine, patients have balance issues, tremors throughout the body, stiff limbs, and slow movement.

According to the Parkinson’s Foundation, roughly 90,000 Americans are diagnosed with the disease every year, and 10 to 20 percent are under age 50.

Experts are still unsure what causes Parkinson’s disease, though evidence suggests that genetic factors and environmental triggers like exposure to strong chemicals and pesticides could be to blame.

In younger patients, a family history of the disease may play a role, according to the Michael J Fox Foundation.

The Rams’ decision-making is already under scrutiny after a disastrous start to the season.

Los Angeles waited until just two days before kickoff to travel to Australia for its Week 1 showdown with the 49ers, then endured a lopsided 27-7 defeat. Adding to the concern, marquee trade addition Myles Garrett was unable to make an impact in his Rams debut.

Garrett finished the game without recording a tackle, as San Francisco’s protection largely neutralized his pass-rush opportunities and kept him from influencing the ground game.

“I’ve got to be better,” Garrett told reporters after the game, via ESPN. “I’ve got to find a way to recover and get back to the player I know I can be and I’ve shown that I’ve been before.”

The star edge rusher also appears to be managing an injury. Rams coach Sean McVay acknowledged that Garrett has experienced swelling in his knee, though he did not provide further details.

Garrett wore a sleeve over his left knee during training camp practices, an indication that the issue may have been lingering before the season began.

“Myles Garrett is not in the game as this drive begins. He’s been subbing in and out throughout,” Netflix sideline reporter Tom Pellissero said during Thursday’s broadcast. “Every time that he leaves the field, he really seems gassed. Remember, he barely practiced in training camp with what the team called a knee injury. He told us it’s ‘lower leg stuff’ and admitted that it is still causing him some pain.”

In the Rams’ season opener, Garrett produced no sacks and no quarterback hits. That kind of stat line occurred only twice last season, when he was with the Browns and went on to win Defensive Player of the Year honors.

The tackle-less performance was Garrett’s first since Week 11 of the 2024 season and only the fourth such game of his NFL career.

Los Angeles’ late travel plan has become an unavoidable part of the conversation. The Rams arrived from Los Angeles just two days ahead of the Australia game rather than giving themselves time to adjust to the time change, while the 49ers arrived more than a week earlier and appeared to be the far more energized team on the field.

“When I was out there, I was a little bit more focused on myself and trying to stay healthy than what they were doing, and that showed,” Garrett said. “I wasn’t who I needed to be for my team.”

Many had primed Garrett for a career year as he is lining up beside Byron Young, Kobie Turner, and eventually Aaron Donald, who was inactive for Thursday’s game as he prepares his return from retirement. 

49ers quarterback Brock Purdy was pressed on just 19 percent of dropbacks (seven total), and three of them were by Garrett as he was stifled by left tackle Trent Williams.

The future Hall of Fame left tackle said that he “couldn’t tell” that Garrett wasn’t 100 percent and that he was still “really hard to block.”

The 49ers now get to fly home happy with a few cupcake matchups awaiting them against the Dolphins and Cardinals in Weeks 2 and 3. 

Meanwhile, the Rams have a much tougher greeting upcoming when they face the Giants on “Monday Night Football,” followed by the Broncos on a short week.

At least 25 people were killed Thursday after a cargo ship undergoing repairs caught fire at a port in Qingdao, a major shipping hub on China’s northeastern coast, according to Chinese state media.

The vessel was docked at Beihai Shipbuilding Co. when the fire broke out at about 11:15 a.m. local time, Xinhua News Agency reported.

There were 42 people aboard when the blaze began. Twelve were rescued safely, while five others were injured and hospitalized in stable condition, according to Xinhua.

Images published by Xinhua identified the vessel as the Ocean Melody. VesselFinder, a ship-tracking website, lists the cargo ship as operating under the Liberian flag.

The Associated Press said the fire was brought under control at about 2:30 p.m., more than three hours after it erupted. Footage shared online showed thick white smoke pouring from the vessel.

Officials have not determined what caused the fire. Chinese authorities are investigating how the blaze started as the ship was being repaired.

Chinese President Xi Jinping called for “intensified efforts” to assist those affected by the disaster, Xinhua reported. Premier Li Qiang said rescuers needed to reach people trapped aboard the ship.

Xi also urged officials to ensure that preventive measures are fully enforced and to “resolutely prevent major and catastrophic accidents.”

Beihai Shipbuilding is a subsidiary of the state-owned China State Shipbuilding Corporation, the world’s largest shipbuilder. According to the company’s website, its primary businesses are shipbuilding and ship repair.

Qingdao, in China’s Shandong province, is one of the country’s busiest ports and a major center for shipbuilding, shipping and international trade. The port handles millions of containers each year and is home to several large shipyards.
