Stability after 60: Try These Four Exercises to Enhance Your Balance

>

As we age, subtle shifts in balance demand our attention. A once-simple step off a curb might now require more caution. Quick turns demand an extra moment of adjustment. Even reaching for a high shelf prompts a quick check of foot placement. These experiences serve as important reminders and, importantly, there are ways to improve them.

Walking serves as a cornerstone for staying active beyond 60, but incorporating balance exercises into your routine can elevate your fitness regimen. These workouts teach your body to manage weight shifts, maintain steadiness on one leg, and adapt to changes in position—building a foundation of confidence in everyday movements.

The following four standing exercises focus on practical, upright movements. They target stillness, controlled steps, lateral shifts, and maintaining balance during light activity. Consider using a counter, wall, or chair for support—ensuring each exercise is approached with confidence right from the start.

Single-Leg Balance Hold

The single-leg balance hold is one of the simplest ways to train steadiness after 60. Every step you take includes a brief moment on one leg, so this exercise gives that skill focused practice. It helps your feet, ankles, hips, and core work together to keep you upright. Start with light fingertip support nearby, then build toward longer holds as your confidence improves.

Muscles Trained: Feet, calves, glutes, hips, core.

How to Do It

  1. Stand tall beside a counter, wall, or sturdy chair.
  2. Shift your weight onto one foot.
  3. Lift the opposite foot a few inches off the floor.
  4. Hold the position while breathing steadily.
  5. Lower your foot and reset.
  6. Switch sides and repeat.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 2 to 3 holds of 15 to 30 seconds per side.

Best Variations: Fingertip-supported single-leg hold, single-leg hold with knee lift, single-leg hold with eyes looking side to side.

Form Tip: Keep your standing foot planted and use light support before your balance gets shaky.

6 Daily Exercises Men Over 60 Need to Keep Their Legs Strong

Heel-to-Toe Walk

The heel-to-toe walk trains balance in motion, which makes it a strong step up from simply standing still. A narrower foot position challenges your control while you move forward. This exercise helps with foot placement, posture, and confidence during slower, more careful steps. It’s especially useful for anyone who feels less steady in tight spaces or on uneven ground.

Muscles Trained: Calves, feet, hips, core.

How to Do It

  1. Stand tall with a wall or counter nearby.
  2. Step one foot forward and place the heel directly in front of the toes of your back foot.
  3. Shift your weight onto the front foot.
  4. Bring the back foot forward in the same heel-to-toe pattern.
  5. Continue for several slow steps.
  6. Turn around carefully and repeat.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 2 to 3 rounds of 8 to 12 steps.

Best Variations: Wider heel-to-toe walk, fingertip-supported heel-to-toe walk, pause heel-to-toe walk.

Form Tip: Move slowly enough that each foot lands where you want it.

Lateral Step-Over

The lateral step-over builds balance in a direction many people don’t train enough. Daily movement isn’t always straight ahead, and side steps can feel less steady when the hips and ankles lose practice. This exercise teaches you to shift weight, clear an obstacle, and regain control before the next rep. Use a low object at first, such as a rolled towel or yoga block.

Muscles Trained: Glutes, hips, quads, calves, core.

How to Do It

  1. Place a low object on the floor beside you.
  2. Stand tall with a counter or chair nearby for support.
  3. Step one foot sideways over the object.
  4. Bring the other foot over to meet it.
  5. Pause briefly to regain balance.
  6. Step back over the object and repeat.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 2 to 3 sets of 6 to 10 reps each direction.

Best Variations: Side step without an object, low towel step-over, supported lateral step-over.

Form Tip: Choose an object low enough that you can clear it without rushing.

4 Chair Exercises That Firm Sagging Arms Faster Than Gym Machines After 65

Suitcase Carry March

The suitcase carry march trains balance while one side of the body holds weight. That uneven load makes your midsection work harder to keep you tall, and the marching pattern challenges single-leg control without needing much space. It’s a practical exercise after 60 because carrying bags, laundry, or groceries often asks your body to stay steady under uneven weight. Start light and keep the march slow.

Muscles Trained: Core, obliques, grip, shoulders, glutes, hips.

How to Do It

  1. Stand tall with a light dumbbell or kettlebell in one hand.
  2. Hold the weight at your side like a suitcase.
  3. Brace your core and keep your shoulders level.
  4. Lift one knee to a comfortable height.
  5. Lower that foot with control.
  6. Continue marching, then switch the weight to the other hand.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 2 to 3 sets of 20 to 30 seconds per side.

Best Variations: Bodyweight standing march, suitcase hold, farmer carry march.

Form Tip: Keep your torso tall and avoid leaning toward the weight.

5 Wall Exercises That Rebuild Hip Strength Faster Than Squats After 60

Best Tips for Improving Balance After 60

Balance improves when you practice it often in positions that feel safe and controlled. Short sessions work well because the nervous system learns through repetition, focus, and small corrections. Keep support nearby so you can challenge yourself without feeling tense. Walking still belongs in your routine, especially for stamina and daily movement, and these exercises add the focused balance work walking usually misses. A few minutes most days can make standing, stepping, and turning feel more confident.

  • Practice near support: Use a counter, wall, or chair so you can touch it before you lose control.
  • Start with your strongest side: Build confidence first, then give the other side the same attention.
  • Keep your eyes up: Looking down too much can throw off posture and make balance feel harder.
  • Train in small doses: Five to 10 minutes of balance work can fit easily after a walk or strength session.
  • Progress slowly: Add time, range, or light weight only when the basic version feels steady.
  • Wear supportive shoes: Good footwear can make balance practice feel more secure, especially on hard floors.

Chilling Discovery Emerges at Lake Mead Amid Record Low Water Levels

0

In a startling discovery, human remains have surfaced in Nevada’s iconic Lake Mead, following a significant decline in water levels that has set new records this month.

Las Vegas resident Dianelis Molina Cruz and her friends made the chilling find on August 16 along the shoreline of Boulder Beach, a popular spot within the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, roughly 30 miles from the Vegas Strip.

According to reports, a young girl, daughter of a friend of Cruz, was playing in the shallow water when she stumbled upon a human lower jawbone, surprisingly intact with teeth and dental fillings.

Shortly thereafter, additional bones emerged along the shrinking shoreline. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has confirmed in a public statement that these remains are from a ‘non-criminal, deceased individual,’ with ongoing examinations to learn more.

The duration that these remains have been lying submerged in Lake Mead remains a mystery, as does the potential involvement in any unlawful activities. The Clark County Coroner’s Office is actively working to identify the body.

Known as the largest reservoir in the United States, Lake Mead was created by the construction of the Hoover Dam, stationed on the Colorado River and serving as a critical resource between Nevada and Arizona.

While it has been providing drinking water, household plumbing and hydroelectric power to millions in the Southwest for decades, the lake has also been in severe decline and now holds only a quarter of the water it used to 40 years ago.

As the water dries up due to severe drought and overuse, more and more bodies have been discovered in recent years – including murder victims.

As of Wednesday, Lake Mead’s surface elevation was just under 1,040 feet above sea level, meaning the crucial reservoir is around 180 feet lower than it should be when the lake is completely full.

The last time Lake Mead was near its full capacity of 1,220 feet was around the year 2000. It has been steadily dropping over the last three decades due to heavy use in the Southwest, severe drought and lack of snow melting at its source in the Rocky Mountains.

This has exposed large portions of local mountains and shorelines which used to be completely submerged by the lake since it was formed in the 1930s.

Mario Lecano, who picked up the jawbone, told KVVU-TV that he was chasing his daughter into the water because she did not have a life jacket on at the time.

‘As soon as I grabbed her, I saw down by her legs that there was, what appears to be, some bones and some teeth,’ Lecano revealed.

Beachgoer Noel De Leon told 8 News Now: ‘We noticed that it’s very low. The water looks very low compared to where it should be. As the water goes down, the skeletons come up.’

In 2022 alone, there were four separate incidents where human remains were uncovered by the declining water levels around Lake Mead.

In October of that year, a human skeleton was pulled from Callville Bay by the National Park Service, about 15 miles away from Boulder Beach.

Those remains were later determined to belong to drowning victim Donald Smith, who disappeared in Lake Mead in April 1974. The death was ruled an accident.

The bones of another drowning victim, 42-year-old Thomas Erndt, were discovered by paddleboarders in Callville Bay in May 2022, two decades after the man died.

However, there have also been more disturbing cases involving other remains recovered from the shrinking lake, including a man who was shot to death and then placed inside a barrel in Lake Mead’s Hemenway Harbor on May 1, 2022.

The murder victim has never been identified, but Las Vegas detectives believe he was killed in the mid-1970s or early 1980s.

Speaking to KSNV at the time of the discovery, Geoff Schumacher, vice president of the Mob Museum, said: ‘When you look at the way the person was killed, and when you think about how the body was disposed of, all of these things kind of tie together with some kind of a mob-related event.’

A fourth man, Las Vegas resident Claude Russell Pensinger, was also discovered in the lake in August 2022, but his cause of death could not be determined. Pensinger had disappeared during a fishing trip on July 14, 1998.

The US Bureau of Reclamation, which manages dams and reservoirs, has warned that Lake Mead’s current water levels sit just five feet from hitting the point where older turbines at Hoover Dam’s hydroelectric facility will be forced to shut down to avoid damage.

The power coming out of Lake Mead at Hoover Dam serves over one million people across Arizona, California and Nevada. It generates about four billion kilowatt-hours of hydroelectric power each year.

Once the drought conditions drop those levels below 950 feet, the entire facility, including the plant’s newer turbines, will have to shut down.

Lake Mead has been drying up due to several factors, including extreme drought conditions throughout the region.

The problem has been particularly dire near the Colorado River’s source in the Rocky Mountains, where very low snowpack totals have meant less frozen water melting into the river to fill it.

Masked Suspect Identified in Philadelphia Terror Crime Wave

Law enforcement has unveiled the identity of a sinister figure suspected of causing panic among the women of Philadelphia while donning a macabre disguise.

Officials are now urging the public to remain vigilant, suggesting that the suspect may have slipped out of Pennsylvania.

The suspect, Zymire Hughes, aged 22, is currently wanted with an arrest warrant issued against him, according to a police announcement. Hughes is implicated in an incident where he allegedly wore a spine-chilling Halloween mask reminiscent of Chucky while attacking a female victim.

This startling event occurred last Wednesday when Hughes reportedly pursued and harassed the woman.

After terrorizing several people, police say, he allegedly came face-to-face with a woman who was ready to fight back, News Media learned.

A woman trained in combat, Jameka Wilson, was able to fight Hughes when he reportedly threatened her.

“He was not guarding his midsection, so she kicked him hard in the chest. He stumbled and ran,” she said.

America’s $40 Trillion Debt Crisis: How It Impacts Your Financial Future

0

Houston, we urgently need to address our burgeoning debt crisis.

The United States is grappling with an extraordinary $40 trillion debt, a figure so astronomical it defies easy comprehension. To put this staggering amount into perspective, consider this analogy.

If you were to stack $1 bills and keep going until you hit $40 trillion, the pile would extend to the moon and back nearly six times.

In terms of value, $40 trillion surpasses the total worth of all the gold ever mined throughout human history.

This immense sum is equivalent to the combined economic output of some of the world’s largest nations: China, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, India, and France.

And your share is $117,000.

That’s more than six-figures for every man, woman, child and baby in America.

It would take the average American worker, earning a salary of $69,770, more than 573 million years to make that much money.

If America’s entire active labor force of 168 million each gave every dollar they earned to repay the US debt, it would take 41 months to balance the books.

Which presidents are to blame for America’s national debt?

The US government debt has ballooned since the Great Recession hit in 2008 — quadrupling from $10 trillion when President Barack Obama was elected, to $40.05 trillion in 2026.

Every president since Ronald Reagan — and his successful efforts to bankrupt the Soviet Union through deficit spending — has ballooned the debt. It hit $1 trillion for the first time early in his administration — and then ballooned to $2.7 trillion, a 189% rise.

Here’s how much the debt went up under each president.

  • Ronald Reagan: $1.76 trillion — 189% increase

  • George H.W. Bush: $1.47 trillion — 54% increase
  • Bill Clinton: $1.56 trillion — 37% increase
  • George W. Bush: $4.9 trillion — 86% increase
  • Barack Obama: $9.32 trillion — 88% increase
  • President Trump: $7.8 trillion — 39% increase
  • Joe Biden: $8.47 trillion — 31% increase
  • President Trump (through August): $3.83 trillion — 11% increase
  • Currently, US debt stands at 123.5% of GDP, higher than in 1945 when the debt-to-GDP ratio swelled to 116% at the end of the Second World War.

Franklin D Roosevelt oversaw the greatest addition to the US debt in percentage terms of any US President, as his New Deal and war spending swelled the deficit by 70 percentage points.

US National Debt as a percentage of GDP dropped after World War II, falling to a low of 31% in 1980 at the start of President Ronald Reagan’s presidency.

In comparison to other countries, the $40.05 trillion figure is truly monumental. It’s larger than the combined GDP of every country in the world except for the US and China

“Forty trillion dollars of debt doesn’t exist solely on the government’s ledgers; it is felt throughout the economy and finds its way to the pocketbooks of people one way or another,” said Maya MacGuineas, president of the nonpartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, in a statement.

“The more we borrow, the more we exacerbate inflation, squeeze out other priorities in the budget, and leave ourselves vulnerable to emergencies at home and turmoil abroad,” she added, following the release of the Treasury data.

Renowned Physicist’s Doomsday Warning: World to Face End of Times This Year

    0

A dire warning about the future of humanity looms less than three months from now, based on a prediction made by scientists over 60 years ago.

In 1960, Austrian physicist Heinz von Foerster, along with his team, published research in the journal Science, marking November 13, 2026, as humanity’s ‘Doomsday.’

This prediction was derived from analyzing 24 estimates of global population growth over nearly two millennia, which showed that the rate of increase was accelerating.

Historically, it took centuries for Earth’s population to double, but each subsequent doubling took progressively less time.

Von Foerster concluded that if this trend continued unchecked, the interval between population doublings could ultimately vanish.

That meant the population would then surge toward infinity, an impossible mathematical endpoint he called ‘Doomsday.’

It did not mean the world would literally end, but marked the point at which extending the historical trend produced a result that could not exist in reality.

‘Our great-great-grandchildren will not starve to death,’ von Foerster wrote. ‘They will be squeezed to death.’

In 1960, Austrian physicist Heinz von Foerster and his colleagues published a paper in the journal Science that provocatively placed humanity's 'Doomsday' on November 13, 2026

In 1960, Austrian physicist Heinz von Foerster and his colleagues published a paper in the journal Science that provocatively placed humanity’s ‘Doomsday’ on November 13, 2026

However, demographers do not consider the prediction credible because global population growth has slowed dramatically since the 1960s, breaking the trend that the equation assumed would continue.

The paper, titled Doomsday: Friday, 13 November, AD 2026, states: ‘At this date human population will approach infinity if it grows as it has in the last two millennia.’

When it was published in 1960, just over three billion people lived on Earth. Today, that figure stands at approximately 8.2 billion, an increase of more than five billion.

However, the annual global population growth rate has fallen from a peak of roughly 2.2 percent in 1963 to about 0.84 percent in 2026, a decline of approximately 62 percent, according to a US Census Bureau 2026 estimate.

At the 1960s rate, the population would double about every 32 years. At today’s rate, doubling would take roughly 83 years.

However, von Foerste’s prediction has resurfaced as the deadline is near.

To test their theory, the researchers applied it to the entire human population, which they considered the best long-term example of a group whose members communicate and work together.

They collected 24 independent estimates of the world’s population spanning nearly 2,000 years, from the time of Christ to 1958.

The paper is titled Doomsday: Friday, 13 November, AD 2026, and states: 'At this date human population will approach infinity if it grows as it has in the last two millennia'

On paper, the population would then surge toward infinity, an impossible mathematical endpoint he called 'Doomsday.'

On paper, the population would then surge toward infinity, an impossible mathematical endpoint he called ‘Doomsday.’

Using global totals helped reduce distortions caused by migration, wars or other changes affecting individual regions.

The team removed estimates that appeared to have been copied from the same sources and then used a statistical method to find the curve that most closely matched the remaining data.

They reported that the model followed the historical population figures with a margin of error of approximately seven percent.

When the curve was extended into the future, however, it pointed to late 2026 as the moment the population would theoretically reach infinity.

The calculation carried an uncertainty of about five and a half years, meaning the widely publicized November 13 date was far less precise than it appeared.

The researchers argued that their projection was still noteworthy because it required extending the historical trend only slightly beyond the available data.

They claimed Charlemagne could have used the same model to predict the endpoint within 300 years, while Queen Elizabeth I could have come within 110 years and Napoleon within 30.

However, running the equation backward exposed its limitations. It placed a hypothetical first human approximately 200 billion years ago, far earlier than the universe itself.

The authors acknowledged that such results were impossible and that the model became unreliable when stretched too far.

In other words, the equation matched much of the historical population data surprisingly well, but its ‘Doomsday’ represented the point where the mathematics broke down, not a literal prediction that the world would end.

Michigan Senate Race Heats Up: Mike Rogers and Abdul El-Sayed Neck and Neck, Poll Reveals

    0

Michigan’s general election for the U.S. Senate reveals a neck-and-neck race between Republican nominee Mike Rogers and Democratic nominee Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed, according to a recent AARP poll.

In this fiercely contested race, El-Sayed holds a slim lead, capturing 48 percent of likely voters’ support, compared to Rogers’ 47 percent. Despite this narrow margin, Rogers finds solid backing among voters aged 50 and over, where he leads with 52 percent compared to El-Sayed’s 43 percent.

Particularly notable is Rogers’ commanding performance among older swing voters, individuals who do not consistently vote along party lines. In this group, the AARP poll reports Rogers holds a sizable 33-point lead over his Democratic opponent.

The survey further delves into Michigan’s gubernatorial contest, revealing a more decisive scenario. Democrat Jocelyn Benson, the current Secretary of State, holds a clear advantage over her Republican opponent, Congressman John James.

In the governor’s race, Benson garners the support of 49 percent of all likely voters, whereas 44 percent favor James. Among voters aged 50 and above, James has a slight edge, leading Benson by a mere one point. However, Benson finds substantial support among older swing voters, boasting a 28-point gap over James in this pivotal group.

Overall, the survey found that older voters — particularly those who are not “straight-ticket voters,” could determine the outcome of the elections in these close races.

This coincides with the fact that more of those ages 50+ describe themselves as “extremely motivated” to vote — 86 percent — compared to 71 percent of those ages 18 to 49 who say the same.

The survey was taken August 9-11, 2026, among 877 likely Michigan voters. It has a margin of error of +/- 3.3 percent.

The results follow a recent Fox News poll, also showing Rogers leading El-Sayed in the Senate race by four percentage points, or 51 to 47 percent. That also coincides with a recent EPIC-MIRS poll from the end of last month that has Rogers up by three, 46 to 43 percent.

Rogers has described El-Sayed as an “extremist” who wants to empty prisons and embrace the Muslim Brotherhood, writing in a statement, “I spent years hunting terrorists and bringing Osama bin Laden to justice. Never in a million years did I think that I would be running against someone who believes America deserved 9/11.”

Indeed, El-Sayed has embraced support from Hasan Piker, who said, “America deserved 9/11.” Instead of overtly condemning that remark, El-Sayed said that Piker’s words needed to be viewed in “context.”

Further, El-Sayed’s campaign recently confirmed that the Democrat nominee still follows Sharia law in his personal life.

Local Judge Dismisses Antisemitism Lawsuit Against Harvard, Sparks Outcry in Jewish Community

    0

In a recent legal twist, Harvard University emerged victorious after a local judge dismissed the Department of Justice’s lawsuit alleging antisemitism on campus. The court determined that prior warnings about campus incidents did not establish a consistent pattern of civil rights infractions. Despite the ruling, Justice Department officials have flatly disagreed and are contemplating an appeal to challenge the decision.

The lawsuit stems from actions by the Trump administration, which had previously halted over $2 billion in grants and contracts in response to Harvard’s refusal to align with federal mandates concerning antisemitism. According to Reuters, the dispute highlights ongoing tensions between federal directives and institutional autonomy in higher education.

A protester holds up a sign that reads "Hands off! Harvard"

Simultaneously, StopAntisemitism’s founder, Liona Rez, voices her dissatisfaction, advocating for the dismissal of a broadcaster following controversial remarks made against an Israeli athlete, intensifying the debate over media responsibility and accountability.

Adding another layer to the contentious discourse, federal authorities are scrutinizing an anti-Israel nonprofit, linked to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Allegations suggest that donor contributions have been directed to a sanctioned Palestinian organization. Backed by Bassema Yousef, an ally of Mamdani, the U.K.-based group, known as “PFF,” reportedly holds a staggering $100 million. The Department of Homeland Security is probing potential connections to Al-Haq, although no criminal charges have yet been substantiated.

Feds are linked to Big Apple Mayor Zohran Mamdani over claims donor cash was funneled to a sanctioned Palestinian group. The U.K.-based “PFF”—backed by Mamdani ally Bassema Yousef—commands a mega $100M war chest. Homeland Security is investigating potential ties to Al-Haq, though no criminal wrongdoing is proven.

Brian Hickerson Speaks Out on Hayden Panettiere’s Shocking Passing

    0

Brian Hickerson, through his attorney, recently expressed his sorrow over the passing of his intermittent partner, Hayden Panettiere, who tragically passed away on Sunday, leaving many in shock.

Sloan Ellis, his legal representative, shared with TMZ on Thursday that the circumstances surrounding Hayden’s death are still being investigated. “It’s crucial that the investigation is permitted to continue unobstructed,” she emphasized.

The attorney reiterated the importance of respecting the process and the privacy of those affected. “Out of sensitivity toward Hayden’s family and friends, and given the active investigation, there will be no additional comments at this juncture,” the statement elaborated.

As previously reported by Page Six, Hayden, aged 36, was discovered lifeless in a residence located in Greenville, South Carolina, during the recent weekend.

On the scene were both Brian and his brother, Zach Hickerson. It was Zach who found Hayden’s body, while Brian remained asleep in another part of the apartment.

According to the 911 audio exclusively obtained by Page Six, paramedics responded to a call about an “unidentified female” in “cardiac arrest.” Within minutes, “CPR [was] in progress” for the “overdose.”

Authorities said there are no signs of foul play and a cause of death has not yet been revealed. The Drug Enforcement Administration has joined the investigation.

An autopsy obtained by us showed “no signs of trauma were discovered that would have contributed to the death.”

The day before Hayden’s death, she traveled from Los Angeles to South Carolina with Hickerson.

The “Remember the Titans” actress and the aspiring actor have dated on and off since 2018.

The pair had a tumultuous past, which included alleged incidents of abuse.

In May 2019, Hickerson was arrested for domestic violence due to an alleged incident with Hayden that resulted in her having redness and visible marks on her body.

At the time, the “Bring It On: All or Nothing” star and Hickerson were drinking in Hollywood the night before the physical altercation at their home. Hickerson was subsequently taken into custody for felony domestic violence for allegedly starting the fight.

Margaret’s appearance comes after her rep confirmed her breakup to TMZ on July 10, insisting there ‘was no infidelity’ and ‘no trust issues’ leading to the demise of her ‘rocky’ marriage to the 42-year-old Bleachers frontman.

The two-time Actor Award nominee and the 14-time Grammy winner haven’t been pictured together since the Grammy Awards on February 1.

A source told DeuxMoi on July 8 that ‘there were many factors that allegedly contributed to the split, with those close to the situation also alleging Jack had long been difficult to live with’.

The Blue Moon actress and Antonoff – who began dating in the summer of 2021 – split in July after nearly three years of marriage.

Qualley changed her Instagram handle back to include her legal name Sarah Margaret Qualley instead of her previous handles @isimolady and @isimostar, which referenced the pop star hitmaker’s 2024 track Isimo.

The House Tour co-director recently deleted photos she shared in March on Instagram from their wedding day at Beach Haven in his native New Jersey.

Qualley was previously romantically linked to her Death Note co-star Nat Wolff, SNL alum Pete Davidson and her Love Me Like You Hate Me leading man Shia LaBeouf.

And Antonoff had reportedly dated the likes of photographer Carlotta Kohl, Golden Globe winner Lena Dunham and two-time Oscar nominee Scarlett Johansson.

Tennessee Driver Charged in Fatal Crash of Two College Cyclists Allegedly Ignored Braking: Court Documents Reveal

    0

In a tragic accident that has shaken Tennessee, a driver allegedly collided with a group of college cyclists without attempting to slow down or avoid them, resulting in the deaths of two and severe injuries to five more. This is according to a recent affidavit that sheds light on the incident.

John Alexander Benfield, now at the center of serious legal proceedings, faces severe charges, including two counts of reckless vehicular homicide and five counts of reckless aggravated assault. These charges stem from a crash involving the Milligan University cycling team that took place on Wednesday in Carter County.

According to details from the affidavit submitted by the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 9 a.m. along Highway 19E, near Simerly Creek Road. Benfield was reportedly driving a 2003 Subaru Baja Sport following another vehicle which switched from the outside lane to the inside lane just before the collision.

Milligan University is grieving the loss of two of its talented sophomores, Haylan Engdahl and Brayden Rogers, who were tragically declared dead at the scene, according to a statement from the university. (Milligan University)

The affidavit notes that Benfield claimed he didn’t notice the cyclists as they traveled in the outside lane until the vehicle ahead changed lanes. The investigating trooper reported finding “no physical evidence” suggesting Benfield attempted to brake or swerve to avoid hitting the cyclists.

Two riders, Milligan University sophomores Haylan Engdahl and Brayden Rogers, were pronounced dead at the scene, according to the university. Seven other cyclists suffered serious or critical injuries, the affidavit states.

Milligan said in a statement that the university was “profoundly shocked and saddened” by the deaths and asked the public to keep the victims, their families and the campus community in their prayers.

“There are no words to adequately describe this level of loss,” the university said. “Our prayers are with all those impacted by this tragedy. Please keep the Milligan community in your prayers.”

The affidavit also said that officers detected the odor of marijuana coming from Benfield’s vehicle. The document does not say whether Benfield was impaired, and he was not charged with driving under the influence in the warrant.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP), which is leading the investigation, said Thursday that troopers are interviewing witnesses, reviewing evidence and examining the crash scene.

“We owe it to them to take the time, follow the facts and get this right,” Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security spokesperson Jason Pack said in a statement to News Media.

THP said its findings will be submitted to the district attorney’s office once the investigation is complete.

A judicial officer found probable cause for Benfield’s arrest Wednesday. His bond was set at $150,000, according to the warrant.

USA Cycling also issued a statement mourning Engdahl and Rogers and offering condolences to their families, teammates, coaches and the Milligan community.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of this morning’s tragic crash involving the Milligan University Cycling team. Our hearts go out to the two student-athletes whose lives were taken far too soon, Haylan Engdahl and Brayden Rogers, as well as to the riders who were injured,” the statement said.

News Media has reached out to the Carter County Sheriff’s Office and the Tennessee District Attorneys General Conference for comment.
