Indiana Coach Curt Cignetti Challenges Notre Dame Over Canceled Football Series

0

Although Indiana recently axed its future series with Notre Dame, head coach Curt Cignetti remains hopeful for a future clash between the teams.

As he expressed his desire for the matchup, Cignetti appeared to jab subtly at the local rival.

“I’d like to play Notre Dame,” Cignetti remarked this week. “Since they’re not in a conference, they ought to come to our place twice, and we’ll head there once.”

Interestingly, Cignetti’s bold comments come amid speculation that Indiana was the party to initially back out of the high-profile non-conference matchup.

Reports surfaced earlier this month via The Athletic, indicating that it was Indiana who sought to call off the home-and-home series slated for 2030 and 2031 with Notre Dame.

The Hoosiers were set to go to South Bend in 2030 before welcoming the Fighting Irish a year later.

Notre Dame has since revived its longtime rivalry matchup with USC in 2031, adding a high-profile opponent to their schedule in the coming years.

The two teams agreed to a new four-year series beginning in 2030 after their rivalry was paused this season after having met every year aside from a three-season hiatus from 1943-45 during World War II and the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.

Indiana, which came out of nowhere to win the national championship a year ago, currently has a light non-conference schedule compared to other title contenders.

This season, they’ll take on North Texas, Howard and Western Kentucky before their Big 10 schedule.

During Big 10 media days a year ago, Cignetti indicated that it wasn’t an accident.

“We figured we would just adopt an SEC scheduling philosophy,” he said. “Some people don’t like it. I’m more focused on those nine conference games.”

Notre Dame has faced criticism of its own for a relatively light 2026 schedule, particularly with USC off the slate and several of its ACC opponents expected to struggle.

Inside Miami’s Elite Club Where Even Jeff Bezos and Ivanka Trump Aren’t on the Guest List

0

In the heart of Miami’s prestigious social scene lies an enclave so exclusive that not even the likes of Jeff Bezos, Lauren Sanchez, and Ivanka Trump have reportedly secured entry. This storied institution? None other than one of Miami’s most revered old-money country clubs.

Nestled within the lavish confines of Indian Creek, a locale fondly dubbed ‘Billionaire Bunker’ for its high-profile and ultra-wealthy residents, the Indian Creek Country Club stands as a fortress of exclusivity among America’s elite establishments.

This Florida hideaway, home to luminaries such as NFL great Tom Brady, legendary musician Julio Iglesias, and renowned businessman Carl Icahn, commands a staggering $1 million initiation fee. Monthly dues soar to $44,000 per member—a price tag well within reach for families like the Bezoses and the Trumps.

Yet, gaining entrance is not merely a matter of wealth. For many newly-minted billionaires seeking refuge on this sunny Florida island, the gates of this country club remain tantalizingly out of reach.

Established in 1929, the Indian Creek Country Club boasts a majestic 18-hole golf course, an opulent Mediterranean villa-style clubhouse, and a stunning pool offering breathtaking views of the Miami skyline over Biscayne Bay, as detailed by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ).

Information about the club is so tight lipped, it does not have a social media presence and its website homepage is just a login screen for members.

Members of the roughly 350-person club consist largely of the island locals who have lived there for generations including doctors, real-estate developers, entrepreneurs, attorneys and financiers.

In February, Bezos and Sanchez, who own three properties on the island, attended the annual dock party with the hopes of impressing the board members, people who attended the event told the WSJ.

Although many of the club members lined up to shake the Amazon founder’s hand, six months later he has still not received an invitation to join the club.

Jared and Ivanka, who own a $30 million property on the island, have also reportedly struggled to get admission to the club.

Members told the newspaper that Mary Anne Shula, the widow of Miami Dolphins coach Don Shula, sponsored the couple for membership.

She hosted a cocktail party to introduce the president’s daughter and son-in-law to the club’s board.

However, allegedly only half of the board showed up, and the couple still has not been offered admission to the club.

The Journal reported that the power couple are edging closer towards admission, thanks to community-minded Kushner’s heavy involvement in a project to build a new sewer for Indian Creek.

‘Most communities you buy a home, you become a member of the club, and this community doesn’t fall in line with that,’ Dina Goldentayer, a real-estate agent who has sold homes on the island, told the WSJ.

‘It’s the most exclusive single-family home community, it’s the most exclusive private members club.’

The process to join the club starts with a sponsorship from two current members, and letters of recommendation from five others.

Ivanka Trump, who owns a home on the island with her husband Jared Kushner, have also reportedly be denied

Then, after impressing other members, the club’s six membership committee members will determine if a person is up for nomination.

At that point, the board of directors, which is made up of 15 members and led by the country club’s president, former AutoNation CEO Mike Jackson, vote, a source told the newspaper.

LA Road Rage: Driver Accused of Attempting to Hit Couple, Dog

0

A volatile confrontation in Los Angeles escalated into a terrifying situation when an enraged driver attempted to hit a couple and their dog with his vehicle.

This alarming incident, recorded by an Uber driver’s dashcam, unfolded in Mid-Wilshire near Harold A. Henry Park on Wednesday evening. The footage vividly shows an orange car chasing a man and his fiancée.

Recalling those harrowing moments, the woman, identified as Celine, shared with ABC 7, “I just run straight on the grass as far back as I can, I look back and I see his car like right behind me.”

The dramatic sequence of events began when the couple waved the driver forward at a stop sign, intending to cross the street once he passed.

Caught off guard while on the phone, Celine recounted, “We weren’t paying attention because we were on the phone. We thought he was just going to drive through, and then I hear him yell, ‘What, you don’t speak effing English?’”

Then, the car charges at them. Video shows the car making a sharp left turn from the stop sign toward the couple and driving through the grass, before eventually leaving the park off a curb.

The man, whose last name was Logan, said when the car charged at them, he pulled their dog Olive out of the way and was “barely missed” by the car.

“It all happened in a matter of seconds, but it was definitely one of the craziest things that’s ever happened to us,” he added.

The driver, as he was leaving, allegedly made a snide remark.

“Bet your effing scared now, huh?” the driver said, according to the woman.

Bystanders told ABC7 they saw the whole thing as well.

“I just see them running toward the park, and the car came up on the curve like very crazy and then he drove away,” Sequoia Hugee, who was at the park with her dog, said.

The couple reported the incident to the Los Angeles Police Department. A spokesperson for the department told The Post Saturday it had no update on the incident.

Derek McInnes Faces Make-or-Break Match as Rangers Boss

0

The swift change in fortunes at Rangers is almost a narrative of tragedy. Not long ago, they were the frontrunners in the league title race, capturing the attention and expectations of many.

Appointed manager Derek McInnes was seen as the key to revitalizing the team’s spirit. He was expected to bring discipline, organization, and a solid foundation to the squad. That was the plan, after all.

Fully aware of the high stakes, McInnes entered with a clear understanding of the challenges within the club’s environment. With his prior knowledge of both the club and the competitive landscape, he seemed poised for success.

Strategically, McInnes brought in talents like Lawrence Shankland and Cammy Devlin from Hearts, players who had stood out magnificently in the previous season, enhancing the team’s potential.

Additional acquisitions such as Ivor Pandur, Vanja Dragojevic, and Daisuke Yokota came with respectable reputations, each expected to contribute significantly to Rangers’ quest for excellence.

At the start of the campaign, there was a general consensus that Rangers were in far better shape than both Celtic and Hearts.

Yet, only four games in, and with elimination from the Europa League already confirmed, the sense of crisis at Ibrox is overpowering.

This is the job that McInnes has worked for all his career, but it is now in serious danger of going up in smoke before the whole thing has even got off the ground.

On the domestic front, after a draw with Dundee United and a defeat to Hibs in his opening two matches in the Premiership, McInnes spoke about recruitment and the need for more quality additions.

It was a theme he repeated both before and after the shambolic Europa League exit to Jagiellonia Bialystok on Thursday night.

Listening to the narrative he presented prior to that tie against the Poles, you could have been forgiven for thinking he was a manager who had spent all summer being denied any new signings.

But that is plainly not accurate. Heading into the second leg against Jagiellonia, Rangers had made nine new signings over the course of the summer.

Five of them — Shankland, Pandur, Yokota, Olwethu Makhanya and Dan Neil — all started on Thursday night. That’s almost half a team.

Three more of the new signings — Devlin, Dragojevic and Ross McCrorie — came off the bench in the second half.

Make no mistake, this is McInnes’ team. For all he may have been down to the bare bones at left-back, that alone does not excuse the paucity of the performance.

Nor does it excuse a nightmare couple of weeks which has seen him make one of the worst starts of any Rangers manager in history with four matches without a win.

Recruitment is only part of the equation. The manager has to take his fair share of responsibility for this mess. He is not getting the best out of those under his command.

McInnes is already treading a fine line. There is a section of supporters who want him gone already. They have seen enough.

The reaction at full-time on Thursday night was apoplectic. It’s not at the stage of being a majority just yet, but there is a section of the fanbase who believe he simply isn’t up to the job.

That still feels premature. But those who remain unconvinced about his credentials as a manager and coach have seen nothing so far to suggest he’s the right man to take the club forward.

For all McInnes can complain about a squad imbalance and a lack of cover in certain positions, he’s the guy picking the team and making the big calls.

His decision to move to a back four at half-time on Thursday night was a disaster. Rangers, who had been decent if not spectacular in the opening 45, were a rabble in the second half.

His team selections and tactics have been erratic and unconvincing. Speaking on Thursday night, McInnes admitted that he had been forced to pick square pegs in round holes in some cases.

But to blame this dreadful start to the new season purely on recruitment is an argument of convenience, one which would seek to spare the manager from any blame.

McInnes does not like what he sees on the touchline in the 1-1 draw against Jagiellonia

McInnes does not like what he sees on the touchline in the 1-1 draw against Jagiellonia

Plainly, it just doesn’t wash. The reality is that Rangers still had more than enough quality to take care of business against Jagiellonia.

It was a tie they should have won but failed to do so. It is a result which now puts McInnes in a position of real peril in this afternoon’s League Cup tie against St Mirren.

If St Mirren were to go to Ibrox and win, the place would erupt. Even more so than it did the other night, and even that felt close to Russell Martin levels of vitriol.

Turn the clock back to last season. For all his many flaws, Martin still had enough about him to see off Panathinaikos and Viktoria Plzen in the Champions League qualifiers.

McInnes has fallen at the first hurdle in Europe against lesser opposition, and in a lesser competition. When Martin’s side were battered 9-1 on aggregate by Club Brugge 12 months ago, it was humiliating.

But at least he had the excuse that Brugge were a very capable Champions League outfit. This time around, Rangers have just been dumped out of the Europa League by a team of no-marks.

When you weigh-up the result and the quality of opposition, it is not a stretch to suggest that the defeat to Jagiellonia over two legs is the club’s worst result in Europe since Progres Niederkorn.

That’s the sort of depths which Rangers are plumbing already this early in the season. All the talk this week from Andrew Cavenagh about culture eating strategy for breakfast is just noise.

The only thing Cavenagh should be eating is humble pie given how many times he’s had to hold his hands up and apologise for getting things wrong since he arrived just over a year ago.

Lawrence Shankland sums up the frustration surrounding Ibrox

Lawrence Shankland sums up the frustration surrounding Ibrox

It’s just vacuous nonsense and cheap soundbites. So, too, the assertion from Jim Gillespie that McInnes was picked for the job based on his similarities to Jurgen Klopp.

Rangers lost four of their five post-split fixtures at the end of last season. Danny Rohl was a dead man walking given how the team totally collapsed in the heat of a title race.

Yet, incredibly, and despite spending £60million on transfer fees since last summer, Rangers have regressed further still. They are now further away than ever.

St Mirren will travel to Ibrox this afternoon smelling blood. They have started the season in good form. They have won both of their opening two league matches, and five of their six games so far in all competitions.

If they were to knock Rangers out of the League Cup, McInnes could well be past the point of no return. There’s only so long this can go on, only so long a Rangers manager can go without a win.

The Europa Conference League qualifiers against Czech side Jablonec will be no pushover either on the basis of what Rangers have served up so far this season, with the first leg at Ibrox on Thursday.

Even this early in the season, we have reached the point where it’s a case of sink or swim for McInnes.

Dolly Parton Cancels Appearance Due to Health Concerns, Fans Rally with Support

Dolly Parton had to cancel an in-person engagement due to “a few little health issues” that arose this week. The 80-year-old icon was expected to be a prominent figure at the grand opening of the NightFlight Expedition ride at Dollywood theme park on Friday, August 14th, but her presence was distinctly missing.

Instead of attending, Dolly opted to make a virtual appearance from Nashville, where she addressed her fans with heartfelt clarity following the recent loss of her brother, Coy “Denver” Parton. She opened with, “I’ve mentioned to you before, dear fans, that a few minor health issues have been troubling me. At times, I feel a little dizzy and dehydrated,” she candidly shared.

“And currently, I’m experiencing dehydration. My doctor in Nashville has put a halt to my travels, saying I’m not to venture out this week. So, if your doctor advises against traveling, it’s best to listen,” she continued. “I want to keep everyone updated, as I promised to share all aspects with you.”

Reassuring her fans further, the country music legend stated, “Everything is on track health-wise. I’m diligently working on all our other projects.”

Her recent medical break comes only months after having to cancel her Las Vegas residency. In a candid message to her Instagram followers in May, the “Jolene” singer shared, “I have a bit of good news mixed with some not-so-good news. The upside is that I’m responding exceptionally well to medication and treatments, with improvements each day.”

“Now, the bad news is it’s gonna take me a little while before I’m up to stage-performance level, because some of the meds and treatments make me a little bit swimmy headed, as my grandma used to say.”

Dolly added that she had long-suffered with “kidney stones,” and that her immune and digestive systems had been “out of whack” over the past three years. Assuring fans that she’s working on “rebuilding and strengthening those,” the A-lister ended on a positive note. “It’s serious buusiness when you’re talking about internal medicine, so I have great doctors and I’m doing really well, and they assure me that everything I have is treatbable so I’m going with that,” Dolly concluded.

Seahawks’ Macdonald Under Scrutiny Following Controversial Player Signing

0

Mike Macdonald, the Seattle Seahawks’ head coach and a Super Bowl victor, addressed the media on Friday following the team’s controversial signing of free agent Terrion Arnold. Careful with his phrasing, Macdonald navigated the sensitive topic of Arnold facing eight felony charges, presenting a well-measured stance.

‘We had a thoughtful conversation with Terrion during his tryout,’ Macdonald explained. ‘Our familiarity with him began during the [2024 pre-draft] evaluations. I considered the insights of those who have consistently supported him. These are individuals we hold in high regard, and their strong recommendations influenced our decision.’

Continuing with his rationale, he added, ‘In evaluating all these elements, we determined it was a beneficial opportunity for our team.’

When probed about the serious allegations facing Arnold, who reportedly orchestrated a kidnapping and assault in Florida earlier this year, Macdonald remained resolute in his decision to avoid disclosing specifics.

Macdonald concluded, ‘We acknowledge the seriousness of the situation, and our approach will be to allow the legal process to unfold appropriately,’ reinforcing the club’s commitment to respecting the judicial proceedings.

Arnold could spend the rest of his life in prison if he’s convicted on all eight charges, which include counts of kidnapping and armed robbery.

On Saturday, the Seahawks made another key move in their secondary by agreeing to a four-year, $132 million extension with Pro Bowl cornerback Devon Witherspoon. The deal was first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Whether or not Witherspoon will be playing alongside Arnold may be left in the hands of a Florida jury.

Following his release from the Detroit Lions, Arnold cleared waivers last month by posting a $1 million bond. He had been ordered to stay at his residence in Tallahassee, Florida, except when he was training, playing or traveling with an NFL team. He also surrendered his passport.

Prosecutors previously requested Arnold be fitted with an ankle monitor, but his attorneys argued he would be unable to play football with this device and the judge agreed.

The Lions took Arnold in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, held in Detroit. He has now become the first player selected in the first round from that year’s draft to be released by his team.

Arnold has played in 24 games, with 22 starts, over his two years with the Lions. He managed one interception, against the Minnesota Vikings in November 2025, and has defended 18 passes.

The rising cornerback is accused of coordinating and directing other co-defendants to lure three men to an apartment, where they were ‘robbed, beaten and held at gunpoint,’ according to state attorneys in Florida.

The victims, who are described as ‘three adult males in their late teens,’ were left with visible injuries after being pistol-whipped. The co-defendants are also accused of stealing the victims’ personal property.

The 23-year-old is accused of coordinating and directing other co-defendants

The 23-year-old is accused of coordinating and directing other co-defendants

Prosecutors claim Arnold orchestrated the plan in retaliation.

As he told police in February, Arnold was allegedly robbed of $250,000 worth of personal items during his stay at an AirBNB property in Largo, Florida. The 2024 first-round draft pick claimed he lost $100,000 in cash, an $80,000 necklace and a cellphone issued to him by the Lions.

However, prosecutors claim, there is no evidence proving Arnold’s alleged victims were the individuals who robbed him back in February.

Arnold is specifically accused of orchestrating the kidnapping and robbery ‘just hours’ after reporting the missing items to the Largo (Florida) Police Department.

He has denied the allegations through his agent, Denise White of EAG Sports Management, who said her client ‘maintains his innocence’ and ‘categorically denies any involvement.’

‘There is no credible evidence linking Mr. Arnold to these allegations,’ read White’s statement. ‘Instead, the government appears to be relying on testimony from multiple convicted felons who have admitted their own involvement and may have substantial incentives to shift blame in an effort to lessen their sentences.

‘Mr. Arnold looks forward to his day in court and is confident that the judicial process will lead to his ultimate vindication.’

If convicted on all eight counts, Arnold could face up to life in prison in the state of Florida

If convicted on all eight counts, Arnold could face up to life in prison in the state of Florida

Previously, when the case first arose in February, the Lions seemed to think Arnold would be fine.

‘We got all the information that says he wasn’t involved,’ Lions coach Dan Campbell said at the annual league meetings. ‘That’s what we know, that’s all we know, and that’s really all I can say. As far as I know it’s not a big deal. It seems like he still wasn’t involved with this.’

Arnold was arrested around the same time as co-defendants Boakai Hilton, Lyndell Hudson, Freddie Lee Hughes III, and Christion Williams. Two others, Arianna Del Valle and Jasmine Randazzo, have already pleaded guilty to their roles in the crime.

Randazzo has been sentenced to four years in prison followed by another six years of probation, while Del Valle has entered an open plea. Sentencing in her case will take place at a later date.

Del Valle is believed to be Arnold’s girlfriend. She and Randazzo were accused of luring the victims to an apartment, where the alleged assault took place.

Investigators say they discovered that Del Valle streamed the incident to Arnold and other co-defendants as the men were traveling to the apartment. Additionally, investigators claim to have discovered a group chat where Arnold and other co-defendants allegedly instructed Del Valle, Williams and Hudson on the assault.

The victims were ultimately let go by the kidnappers, authorities say, after which they informed Tampa Police and identified the suspects.

Adam Driver’s Take on Mister Sinister: Unveiling the X-Men Movie Villain

0

For what seemed like a never-ending saga, Adam Driver’s association with Marvel Cinematic Universe projects was a consistent narrative over the years. His name was rumored for roles such as Doctor Strange, then Mr. Fantastic. As the whispers continued, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige disclosed in July 2026 that they had been engaging in annual Zoom meetings with Driver to pitch various parts, though none bore fruit—until now. One virtual meeting finally resonated, leading to Adam Driver’s official enlistment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The actor, known for his work in the “Star Wars” Sequel Trilogy and the series “Girls,” is set to step into the shoes of Dr. Nathaniel Essex, also known as Mister Sinister, in the eagerly anticipated “X-Men” reboot slated for release on May 5, 2028. Although Driver didn’t make a physical appearance at the D23 panel unveiling the “X-Men” lineup, he contributed a pre-recorded video to announce his role in the Marvel world. Following a hiatus from big franchises, having focused on indie films like “Megalopolis” and “Paper Tiger,” Driver is set to return to the Disney fold, tackling the role of one of the most notorious villains in the X-Men comics.

Given the scant prior movie portrayals of this infamous antagonist, many might find themselves pondering—just who is Mister Sinister? What makes this character the one to finally draw Adam Driver into the Marvel realm?

Meet Mister Sinister, the first MCU X-Men villain

Surprisingly, Mister Sinister, now a legendary villain within the X-Men universe, only debuted in the comics in the late ’80s—in 1987, to be precise. This character was the brainchild of Chris Claremont, a pivotal writer in the “X-Men” comic realm.

Mister Sinister’s origins trace back to Nathaniel Essex, a fervent geneticist from the 19th century. His rogue scientific endeavors led him to uncover mutant genes, intensifying his obsessive pursuits. Through the influence of Apocalypse, Essex was transformed into the super-powered Mister Sinister, boasting abilities such as remarkable healing, telepathic prowess, and extended longevity, among other supernatural traits.

In other words, he’s a collection of the individual superpowers of various X-Men members (the telepathy of Xavier, Wolverine’s healing, etc.) all rolled up into one evil guy who keeps tormenting mutants and various X-Men mainstays for centuries. He’s also got a striking look, with his pale white skin, a red orb on his forehead, and delightfully maximalist outfits emphasizing blue and red hues. Thanks to his unique design and formidable prowess, Mister Sinister has become a go-to X-Men villain throughout countless different comic book storylines.

His enduring popularity has also ensured that Mister Sinister and his power set have appeared in non-comics “X-Men” media, such as animated shows like “X-Men ’97” and “Wolverine and the X-Men.” No wonder this new “X-Men” reboot opted for him as a bad guy.

The cinematic history of Mister Sinister

Part of the history of Mister Sinister aren’t just his origins as a human scientist or his connections to ancient X-Men foe Apocalypse. Mister Sinister’s also constantly been teased for movie appearances yet never previously made it to the silver screen. Ten years before Adam Driver was cast as Mister Sinister, an “X-Men: Apocalypse” post-credits scene established the existence of the Essex Corporation, a company run by Mister Sinister in the comics. Two years later, rumors abounded that Jessica Chastain would be playing a gender-flipped version of the character in “Dark Phoenix.”

Then there was the 2020 “New Mutants” movie, which would have apparently involved Mister Sinister as a major baddie. Original plans for an end credits scene  would have featured Jon Hamm as Mister Sinister before ostensibly reprising the role in a bigger capacity in a sequel. Those plans never came to pass or even got filmed since they got capsized by competing ambitions to have Channing Tatum’s Gambit contend with Mister Sinister in his unrealized solo movie. The 20th Century Fox era of “X-Men” media was constantly flirting with the idea of bringing Mister Sinister into live action, but never actually committed to the idea.

The Marvel Studios “X-Men” reboot, though, looks poised to bring Mister Sinister and his rich history and mutant powers from the comics to the big screen for the first time — and finally allow Adam Driver to make his MCU debut.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office in Illinois has launched an investigation after a deputy allegedly left his K-9 alone in a field.WLS

LAKE COUNTY, Ill. (WLS) — In a surprising turn of events, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office in Illinois is currently probing into an incident involving one of its own deputies. The deputy in question is accused of abandoning his K-9 partner in an open field without supervision.

The incident came to light following a report that revealed K-9 Axel was left unsupervised for over 20 minutes in May by his handler, raising concerns within the community and the department.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

Reports suggest that as Axel and his handler engaged in a lively game of fetch, the deputy received an urgent call concerning railroad gates obstructing a nearby road, prompting him to leave abruptly.

According to the sheriff’s office, the deputy prioritized the urgent call, inadvertently abandoning Axel, who was later discovered by a community member, calmly munching on grass in the deserted field.

Following a thorough investigation, the department decided to remove Axel from the deputy’s charge, indicating the seriousness with which they are handling the situation.

Deputy Chief Chris Covelli said in a statement, “Axel is healthy, capable of continuing to work, and is expected to have several years of productive service life remaining. Several law enforcement agencies have expressed interest in acquiring Axel.”

Axel is being cared for at a K-9 training facility while his future placement is finalized.

Luigi Mangione Admits Guilt in Federal Case Ahead of Brian Thompson Murder Trial

0

In a dramatic turn of events, Luigi Mangione has confessed to federal accusations connected to the tragic shooting of Brian Thompson.

Mangione, who is 28, changed his initial plea to guilty on August 14, acknowledging federal stalking charges in the 2024 murder of the UnitedHealthcare CEO. This plea reversal comes after his previous declaration of innocence in April 2025, as reported by the Associated Press.

This development addresses one of the two legal battles Mangione faces in connection with Thompson’s untimely death, as noted by the same source.

Outside the courtroom in Manhattan, Mangione’s defense team announced that they have requested the dismissal of state charges, arguing that these charges overlap, thus violating the principle of double jeopardy.

“Mr. Mangione has taken full accountability for causing Brian Thompson’s death,” stated defense attorney Karen Friedman during an AP’s livestream. She insisted that her client should not be subjected to multiple prosecutions for what she termed as a “single tragic event.”

In court, Mangione shared that he suffered from back pain for years and learned that UnitedHealthcare planned to hold an investor conference in Manhattan, according to MS Now. He also posed as an investor to obtain the address of the event.

“I shot Mr. Thompson in Manhattan, and he died,” Mangione said, per the outlet. “And I knew what I was doing was illegal.”

Per a letter agreement, prosecutors indicated that they believe the crimes warrant Mangione facing between 24 to 36 years in prison, MS Now reported. The judge set his sentencing hearing for Dec. 18.

In June, his defense announced they were no longer pursuing a psychiatric defense, a major reversal for their strategy.

Prosecutors alleged that in November 2024, Mangione traveled to New York from Georgia and checked into a hostel using a fake New Jersey ID. On the morning of Dec. 4, he allegedly rode an e-bike to midtown Manhattan.

Wearing a hoodie and a mask and armed with a 9-millimeter 3D-printed ghost gun with a silencer, Mangione allegedly shot 50-year-old Thompson in the back and leg, before fleeing the scene and eventually the state, prosecutors said.

Thompson was transported to a hospital where he died.

Investigators later found two shell casings marked with the words “DENY” and “DEPOSE” and a bullet bearing the word “DELAY” at the scene.

According to two law enforcement officials who spoke anonymously to the Associated Press, the words may reference the alleged catchphrase, “Delay, Deny, Defend,” reportedly used by healthcare companies when rejecting payment for medical treatments.

Mangione was arrested on Dec. 9 when authorities tracked him down at a McDonald’s in Altoona, PA after an employee recognized him from media photos. There, police recovered a handgun, ammunition magazines, live cartridges, a homemade silencer and the fake ID.

Oxygen and MS Now are both part of the Versant Media family.

Impaired Driver Collides with Police Car, Causes Multi-Vehicle Incident in Atlantic Beach

0

In a fortunate turn of events, the Atlantic Beach Police Department reported that no injuries were sustained when a driver, later apprehended on DUI charges, collided with a police vehicle.
