Tragic Michigan Shooting Claims Mother and Son as First Victims

0

Tragedy struck Michigan when a harrowing shooting claimed the lives of five individuals, including a mother and her son, before the shooter took his own life. The first victims identified in this devastating incident were Amanda Everitt and her teenage son, Eric.

Family members confirmed that the 41-year-old mother and her son were tragically gunned down at their LaChance Road residence in Lake Township on a somber Friday morning.

In addition to Amanda and Eric, the assailant, identified as Chad Hickman, 39, also claimed the life of another person who remains unidentified. Everitt’s 13-year-old daughter, Bella, was critically injured, sharing Michigan State Police findings.

Despite her critical condition, young Bella demonstrated remarkable courage by calling 911 after sustaining a gunshot wound to her arm. Unfortunately, Hickman evaded capture before law enforcement arrived, triggering a widescale search operation.

During the intense manhunt for Hickman, officers discovered another deceased individual at a separate residence, adding to the grim tally of lives lost.

A short time later, troopers found Hickman’s vehicle abandoned near a wooded area close to Whitlock Lake.

Authorities then decided to scour the area with a K9 team, when they discovered Hickman’s body – along with another deceased victim.

Everitt’s father, David Everitt, shared a touching tribute to his daughter and grandson while praising Bella’s strength on Facebook.

‘This world just lost two beautiful people and one is clinging to life,’ he wrote.

‘My daughter Amanda and her two beautiful children were shot in their home yesterday, Amanda and her son Eric went home to be with god and our granddaughter Bella is clinging to life in a Grand Rapids hospital.’

The heartbroken grandfather continued: ‘This is my plea to everyone on this planet to teach their children compassion and kindness not hate and violence so parents and family members do not have to bury their children and brothers and sisters.

‘This was a cowardly act by a evil person and i hope hell gives him his due.

‘God be with you Amanda and Eric and prayers for Bella who while shot four times still managed to call 911 and identify the shooter. She is a hero.’

Police have not confirmed the victims’ identities, and it is unclear if Everitt and her children are related to Hickman or his ex-wife, Katie.

A profile apparently belonging to Hickman’s ex-wife posted that she and their three children were safe from the rampage.

‘Just want to let everyone know that me and the kids are safe,’ she posted.

‘And thank you all for loving and caring for me and my family as much as you all do. We love you all.’

The ex-wife, Katie, initiated divorce proceedings in 2023, according to records obtained by the Detroit News.

It was then finalized last year, when a judge declared that it was ‘uncontested’ that the marriage had allegations of domestic abuse on both sides that were ‘at the heart of the issues before the court.’

A motive for the killings on Friday remains unclear as authorities work to piece together exactly what happened, but police have said there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Court records show Hickman was convicted in 2024 of misdemeanor fourth-degree child abuse and contributing to the delinquency of children in connection with a 2010 criminal case.

Records obtained by the Daily Mail also suggest he was facing a new civil lawsuit that was filed at the end of July. The details of the case were unclear.

Marvel Unveils X-Men Reboot Cast and 2026 Premiere Date

Calling all X-Men fans! Marvel Studios has just lifted the curtain on the all-star cast of its much-awaited X-Men film at the 2026 D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event. Excitement buzzed through the air as the announcement was made during this celebrated Disney tradition.

Sadie Sink, known for her recent appearance as Jean Grey in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, captured the spotlight at the D23 Expo on August 14. She joined Marvel’s leading light, Kevin Feige, and visionary director, Jake Schreier, to unveil the upcoming X-Men lineup set to dazzle audiences.

Heartstopper sensation Kit Connor is stepping into the shoes of Cyclops, with Christopher Abbott taking on the iconic role of Professor Charles Xavier. The cast also features Samara Weaving as the frigid Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as the spirited Rogue, and Maya Boyd breathing life into Storm.

Feige shared an intriguing hint during the showcase, playfully suggesting, “someone else wanted to join us on stage.”

Sadie Sink

The secret surrounding Sadie Sink’s enigmatic character in Spider-Man: Brand New Day has finally been unveiled. The movie, which premiered on Friday, July 31, delves into the aftermath of Dr. Stephen Strange’s spell that erased Peter Parker’s (Tom Holland) identity from the world’s memory. Now, four years on, he continues his clandestine vigil over New York City as the masked hero, Spider-Man, while balancing…

“Hey, D23,” Star Wars star Adam Driver said in a brief video shared with the audience, revealing his role as Nathaniel Milbury/Mister Sinister.

The new version of X-Man will premiere in theaters on May 5, 2028.

Based on the beloved Marvel Comics franchise, there have been multiple live-screen adaptations including 2000’s X-Men trilogy, 2011’s X-Men: First Class and even more spinoffs including Logan (2017) and Dark Phoenix (2019). Few details about the new iteration have been revealed.

“I grew up with the original movies, and it’s really cool because it also feels like we are doing a really different version,” Connor, 22, told Good Morning America during a cast interview later on Friday. “[It’s] a different take, which is really exciting.”

As for director Schreier, he further hinted to GMA how his version would differ from adaptations past.

The spirit of vengeance lives! Ryan Gosling finally joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe at San Diego Comic-Con 2026. Gosling, 45, made a surprise appearance at Marvel Studios’ Hall H panel on Saturday, July 25, to confirm that he will star in a reboot of the Ghost Rider franchise. “They’ve made such great movies in this world, [and] let’s find the things that haven’t recently been [shown] from all these other corners of the universe,” Schreier, 44, teased on Friday. “There’s so many stories that are still untold, to honor and to reach into and to meet this cast and try to do something new. I think you always want to see something that reveres where it came from and then is still taking a new spin [on] where we want to go.”

Sink’s version of Jean Grey was introduced in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which premiered last month.

“Giving [Jean] a backstory is really important — especially given her actions in the film. She’s very flawed,” Sink, 24, told Variety of joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “You’re meeting her at a strange point, because I don’t think she is someone who wants to harm, but she herself has been harmed, so that’s all she knows. Giving her that backstory and a motive behind her actions is really powerful.”

After — spoiler alert — saving Spider-Man/Peter Parker (Tom Holland) from near-death, Jean left New York City on a bus where fans presumed she was en route to the X-Men school.

“I don’t really know yet, to be honest,” she quipped to the outlet of Jean’s whereabouts. “And when I say ‘I don’t know,’ I mean I really don’t know.”

The intimate ceremony took place at St James’ Church in Sevenhampton, Wiltshire, where the 38-year-old royal joined other mourners. This gathering followed the passing of 88-year-old McNally, who succumbed to a prolonged illness just two months after the loss of his own son, Sean McNally.

Her mother Sarah, 66, was not seen at the funeral, with reports saying Beatrice represented her mother at the service.

The ceremony included a Gaelic blessing and readings, including one by Paddy’s surviving son Rollo McNally.

Jesse James Seeks Fifth Divorce Amidst Abuse Claims: A Hollywood Saga Unfolds

Jesse James finds himself in the midst of marital turbulence yet again as his wife, Bonnie Rotten—born Alaina Hicks—has filed for divorce. This marks the couple’s third encounter with such proceedings, following two similar instances in late 2022.

In a dramatic turn of events, both parties are now leveling accusations of domestic abuse against each other.

In response to Rotten’s latest divorce petition, James has sought a restraining order, taking legal measures on Wednesday. Rotten has similarly pursued her own restraining order.

James is petitioning the court for a mandate requiring Rotten to maintain a 100-foot distance from him and their child until a custody hearing clarifies future arrangements, as reported by TMZ on Friday.

Rotten, a 30-year-old former adult film star, became the fifth wife of the 55-year-old reality TV figure in June 2022. The couple celebrated the birth of their son, Bishop, in 2023.

James famously cheated on his A-list movie star wife Sandra Bullock which led to their 2010 divorce. He also dated tattoo artist Kat Von D.

DailyMail.com has contacted Jesse James’ representative for comment.

In court documents, James said that in early 2022 before they even wed she attacked him and tried to break his finger. But he married her anyhow.

And he added that she was violent many times after that.

His examples are when Bonnie allegedly tried to poke a hole in his neck with her nail when she was pregnant with their son.

James also said that she kicked him from behind, breaking his wrist and dislocating his thumb. She argued that she slammed the door on him and he fell.

He also accused her of abusing their cats and dogs.

Bonnie claimed that Jesse slapped her in the face once and punched her in the throat.

TMZ claimed to have spoken with Bonnie.

She told the site she moved out of the house with Jesse and took their son with her ‘to protect them.’

She also claimed that Jesse is trying to ‘gaslight’ her.

Rotten told the site: ‘For the safety and well-being of our child, I will not engage in litigating this matter in the press. I trust the legal process to address these issues appropriately and respectfully ask for privacy during this time.’

This comes after she filed for divorce twice in 2022.

In December 2022 she accused her husband of cheating and branding him ‘disgusting’.

One day later, Rotten revealed the pair had reconciled.

In 2022 the two were at each other’s throats.

Rotten announced her pregnancy with a sonogram photo in November 2022, with the caption: ‘Jesse is busy trying to f*** other women while I’m pregnant.’

This comes after James took to Instagram to deny the cheating accusations and share an array of snaps of the couple in happier times.

He wrote: ‘Baby I didn’t cheat on you I swear!! I’m sorry we got into a fight. I’m sorry I called you a r****d when we were fighting.

‘I know that just made you more mad, and didn’t do anything to make the situation better. It was out of line and childish and immature. I’m sorry I did that.

James, who has a long history of infidelity, added: ‘In the whole time we have been together, I have never texted or sent inappropriate DMs to anyone.

‘Please know. I’ve never thought about cheating on you. I’ve never tried to cheat on you. I’ve never had the urge to cheat on you. You are the only one I want, forever.

‘Every chick that was hanging around back then got told I was in love with you and I couldn’t see them anymore,” he wrote. “This was me making efforts to secure your trust and do things the right way. (What a ‘Man’ does).

James admitted that he had texted an ex ‘out of spite’ after his row with Rotten, saying: ‘I really thought we were done, and I was so mad and acted out of anger and spite.

‘I know this hurt you and I’m sorry. I unfollowed her and won’t contact again.’

‘I know you’re pregnant, and I know you are having a rough time right now. I want to make things better and do everything possible to make your life the best.

‘I want to be a positive and fix everything with us. I’ve learned from my past mistakes and I will do whatever it takes to make you happy, and gain your love and trust. Please come home. I love you.’

He later changed the caption on the post to: ‘2022 a love story in 9 pictures’ and tagged his estranged wife.

In December 2022 he said: ‘Ok I think you guys have had enough.. I’m sorry you guys had to endure my little social experiment this week, but it was necessary, For Starters…I love my wife. Like really love her.’

Rotten branded the famed mechanic a ‘truly disgusting human being’ and said, ‘I’m so hurt by everything he has done to me.’

She also accused him on following his ex and other girls on Instagram: ‘I see his page he’s following his ex and a bunch of girls.

‘I’m his pregnant wife and he chooses to act like this. THAT’S NOT A MAN.’

‘I’m so hurt by everything he has done to me. He doesn’t give a f*** about anyone but himself. He’s a truly disgusting human being,’ she went on.

She also addressed those who warned her about James.

‘Everyone can laugh at me make fun of me whatever you want to say. Nothing will make me feel worse than how I truly feel right now. I should’ve known better you’re all right,’ she added.

The duo looked happy in the summer of 2022 while celebrating their honeymoon in August at the Little Palm Island in Florida Keys.

The couple wed in a small backyard wedding in Texas back in late June 2022. It was Rotten’s second marriage, and James’ fifth.

Bonnie had her eight-year-old daughter in attendance from her first marriage to celebrate the nuptials.

This isn’t the first time James has been accused of cheating by a spouse.

His marriage to Oscar winning actress Sandra Bullock imploded following news of his infidelity in 2010.

Sandra and Jesse got married in 2005, and together they adopted a child named Louis.

However, soon after the couple took that big step, news of his infidelity with tattooed model Michelle ‘Bombshell’ McGee swept over.

In April 2010, Jesse checked himself into a rehab facility in Arizona for sex addiction after apologizing profusely to Bullock, although that wasn’t enough to save the marriage – they divorced the following June.

Jesse has three children: Chandler James and Jesse James Jr. with his first wife, Karla James, to whom he was married from 1991 to 2002.

He also shares daughter Sunny James with his second wife, retired porn actress Janine Lindemulder, to whom he was married from 2002 to 2004.

His fourth wife was professional drag racer Alexis DeJoria.

They married in March 2013 and went on to separate in March 2020, after he allegedly cheated with ‘at least 20 women’ and would ‘sneak his mistresses into the marital home in Austin, Texas for sex while his wife was away on race meets or at family functions.’

He was also engaged to famous tattoo artist Kat Von D in January 2011. They had an on-off relationship before ultimately splitting in September 2011 as she later accused him of cheating with multiple women.

Shanna Moakler Promises to Reveal All About Kourtney Kardashian Drama in New Book Following Renewed Feud with Travis Barker

Shanna Moakler hinted that more details will eventually emerge about her ongoing clash with Kourtney Kardashian, but she’s holding her cards close for now.

As the former wife of Travis Barker, with whom she has three children—Atiana, age 27, Landon, age 22, and 20-year-old Alabama—Moakler recently broke her silence after tossing some subtle shade at Barker’s current wife via social media.

“Honestly, it’s much ado about nothing,” Moakler shared with the Daily Mail on Friday. “I frequently post and remove things on my social accounts; there’s really not much more I need to say right now.”

However, fans eager for the juicy details won’t have to wait forever. Moakler has promised to delve into the saga in her forthcoming memoir, titled “Queen Risen,” which she mentioned was completed in February.

“In my own time, I plan to tell my tale in my own way through my book, and I’m excited for that,” the 51-year-old told the outlet.

On Thursday, the former beauty queen appeared to take a jab at Kardashian in response to a video featuring her three children alongside her ex’s new belle at the premiere of Barker’s documentary, “Travis Barker: Louder Than Fear.”

“Where are her children?” Moakler wrote in a TikTok comment that has since been deleted.

Kardashian, 47, hit the red carpet without any of her four children: Mason, 16, Penelope, 14, and Reign, 11, whom she shares with ex Scott Disick, and 2-year-old Rocky, whom she shares with Barker, 50.

Moakler previously weighed in on the Poosh founder’s motherhood during an appearance on Brittany Cartwright’s “When Reality Hits” podcast.

When asked whether she and Kardashian discuss co-parenting, Moakler said, “I don’t think those women have those conversations with anybody,” seemingly taking a swipe at the entire Kardashian family.

The former USA winner went on to say that she felt some of their past conversations weren’t “respectful.”

“At certain times, I felt, ‘Wow, if I had your kids, I wouldn’t be doing some of the s–t you’re doing with my kids,’” Moakler added.

In June 2024, Moakler didn’t hold back about her feelings toward the “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” stars, telling People she doesn’t “have to like the f–king Kardashians.”

“I’m honestly sick of talking about them,” she told the outlet. “As I stand here today, as a mature woman who’s gone through all that … I do not give a f–k what anyone thinks of me anymore. I’m proud of who I am.”

Barker and the former “Meet the Barkers” star tied the knot in October 2004, but split in August 2006 following an on-and-off relationship. Their divorce was finalized in 2008.

Kardashian, for her part, married Barker in May 2022 in Santa Barbara, California, before welcoming their son, Rocky, in November 2023.

Spain Bolsters Ceuta Security Amid Morocco Border Tensions

0

Heightened security measures have been enacted by Spain and Morocco at the shared border surrounding Spain’s North African territory, Ceuta. This clampdown comes as social media buzzes with fresh invitations for Moroccan migrants to storm the border once more, reminiscent of a similar occurrence last July which left the city unaided and strained by enormous numbers.

On Friday, soldiers were visibly monitoring both business and government districts across the city while increased policing patrolled Ceuta’s primary thoroughfares, according to a report from Reuters.

Across the border in Morocco, security units clad in black maintained a watchful eye along the Fnideq beaches, historically known as key launch pads for clandestine entries into Ceuta. This area last July was the scene of a massive influx, with over 70,000 individuals arriving in a single wave from Morocco.

This bolstered security response is directly linked to online encouragements for Moroccans to once more converge upon Ceuta and Melilla, another of Spain’s territories in Africa, sparking further border tensions slated for Saturday.

“The Ministry of the Interior has detected, during the last few days, the circulation of anonymous publications and messages on certain social networks inciting the organization of attempts at collective and illegal crossing to the cities of Ceuta and Melilla, practices which carry serious risks to the safety of people and aim to instrumentalize migration issues in acts of incitement, which are criminalized by law,” Morocco’s Ministry of the Interior said in a statement posted to the country’s state-affiliated news website MAP.

Morocco arrested multiple people who circulated the inciting statements, Interior Ministry spokesperson Rachid El Khalfi said.

The Interior Ministry also called on Spain to continue working to return the remaining Moroccan migrants in Ceuta back to the North African country.

Of the more than 72,000 migrants who rushed the border, the vast majority have returned to Morocco, according to statements from Spain and Ceuta’s government. About 5,000 remain, Spain’s Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska told reporters Friday.

Spanish officials have been screening the remaining migrants and have processed roughly 500 asylum seekers’ cases, rejecting the vast majority of them, Reuters reported.

Spain has also installed floating barriers in the waters where migrants had previously swam across.

New Evidence May Exonerate Hawaii Doctor in Murder Attempt

0

A Hawaiian doctor’s conviction for attempting to murder his engineer wife could be overturned after a suspicious text message during jury deliberations accurately foretold the verdict.

Gerhardt Konig, a 47-year-old anesthesiologist, has raised concerns of potential juror tampering following his conviction for attempted manslaughter of his wife, Arielle, in March 2025.

A comment on a Law&Crime YouTube livestream appeared during the trial saying, “I’ve been texting with one of the jurors and they’re going for count 3 attempted manslaughter.”

In April, Konig was found guilty of attempted manslaughter, consistent with the livestream prediction, but acquitted on other charges, including second-degree murder, following an alleged attempt to push Arielle off a cliff over her emotional affair.

Konig’s attorney, Thomas Otake, addressed the First Circuit Court Judge Paul Wong in Oahu, asserting that the text indicates a juror violated the rule prohibiting discussions about the case with outsiders during the trial.

Konig’s defense acknowledged that the ‘full scope’ of what happened remained unknown, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported. But they claimed to have ‘substantial concerns regarding the jury’s exposure to outside influence or extraneous information during deliberations,’ per a court filing reported by CNN.

Konig faces up to 20 years behind bars and was due to be sentenced on August 13. That hearing has been postponed indefinitely while a probe into the juror’s text continues.

The filing noted that the livestream comment was initially spotted and emailed to prosecutors by someone whose name was redacted, according to the outlet.

‘What caught my attention is that this commenter specifically predicted the verdict – that Konig would be convicted of attempted manslaughter – before it was announced,’ the undisclosed person wrote, per the report.

Prosecutors then told the judge about what happened. However, they insisted that the livestream comment was not grounds for a new trial unless there was actual proof of ‘external influence.’

‘A juror disclosing where the jury stands is certainly problematic, but on its own it does not indicate that the other party influenced that juror in any way,’ Deputy Prosecutor Joel Garner said in the reported filing.

Konig has also argued that he could get a new trial because of what jurors publicly commented after his verdict was delivered.

Jury foreperson Makalapua Atkins told reporters after the trial that ‘the intent to kill is improbable to us, based on the evidence presented.’ according to HawaiiNewsNow.

Atkins said in a sworn statement presenting alongside Konig’s appeal that ‘the jury did not unanimously believe that [he] had an intent to kill his wife,’ CNN reported.

She declined prosecutors’ request to be interviewed by them, according to the legal filings.

Another juror, who was only identified as Juror #3, said that he believed Konig to be ’emotionally unstable’ in an interview with KHON2.

‘I don’t know if he was trying to kill his wife personally,’ the juror told the outlet. ‘I do know that it was the capacity to kill his wife personally. That’s how I felt about it.’

In response to what the jurors have said since Konig’s conviction, his defense argued that ‘conduct that could result in death or has the capacity to kill may be reckless, but it is not necessarily intentional,’ per CNN.

‘Hawaiʻi does not recognize attempted reckless manslaughter,’ the court filing continued.

Konig’s defense also stressed that the jury never convicted Konig of second–degree murder, effectively arguing that a new trial could not return to that charge.

Garner, the Deputy Prosecutor, argued that the foreperson’s comments were an example of ‘exactly the juror sharing their mental processes,’ the Star–Advertiser reported.

He pushed back on Konig’s defense and said that ‘any juror would be pressured knowing their verdict could be attacked, their thought process is not secret.’

Judge Wong set a new hearing for September 11, when the jurors will return to court before a decision is made on a possible new trial.

Prosecutors previously claimed that Konig had planned to kill Arielle during a weekend trip to Honolulu for her birthday because he was upset about her relationship with a married coworker.

He allegedly attempted to push her off a cliff on Oahu’s stunning Pali Puka trial, as well as tried to stab her with a syringe.

Konig then allegedly tried to hit his wife with a rock before being interrupted by two hikers who overheard what was happening.

He testified in court that it was his wife who attacked him first, and that he had acted in self–defense.

Konig told the courtroom that Arielle was having an affair, which he had found out through her WhatsApp account.

Arielle testified that she had an ’emotional affair’ with the coworker that included daylong message exchanges but never turned physical, according to Courthouse News.

She told the court that her husband attacked her and tried to drag her over the cliff’s edge.

In her testimony, Arielle said that Konig attempted to use syringes in his attack, but that she fought her off by biting his forearm and squeezing his testicles.

The anesthesiologist fled the scene afterwards and called his adult son from a previous marriage, Emile.

Emile testified against his father during the case and told the courtroom that his father admitted to trying to kill Arielle.

The Daily Mail has reached out to Otake, Konig’s attorney, and the Honolulu Department of the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, which prosecuted the case, for further comment.

Melanie Lynskey: Juggling Motherhood and TV Role Finales

When Melanie Lynskey stepped onto the set for Netflix’s latest release, Don’t Say Good Luck, she anticipated challenging moments. However, it wasn’t the emotional dialogues or tear-filled scenes that tested her resolve. Instead, it was the day when she had to sing Katy Perry’s “Firework” out loud in a public parking area that truly put her nerves to the test.

“Singing terrifies me,” Lynskey candidly shared during a recent Zoom chat with Decider. “Though I have a fondness for karaoke, I approach it with all the critique of a Simon Cowell. I’m always keen to suggest songs to others and quick to tell them, ‘That’s not your tune.’”

In this film, Lynskey takes on the role of Elizabeth, the mother to Sunny Sandler — Adam Sandler’s youngest daughter. Sunny’s character is charmed by her mother’s strength, even as Elizabeth battles a progressively dire cancer diagnosis. The directorial reins were held by Julia Hart, while the screenplay emerged from a collaborative effort among Hart, Jordan Horowitz, and Laura Hankin. Remarkably, the plot draws inspiration from Hankin’s own teenage years, when while starring in a high school musical, she coped with her mother’s terminal illness.

Lynskey, who is herself a parent, found the essence of Elizabeth’s “unconditional motherly love” irresistibly compelling. Her on-screen chemistry with the young Sandler is both natural and endearing. In conversations with Decider, the New Zealand-born, Emmy-nominated actress reflected on overcoming her singing fears, the film’s production experience, and the emotionally charged farewell to her role in Yellowjackets, as its fourth and final season filming concluded earlier this month.

DECIDER: Did you have an opportunity to discuss with Laura Hankin about her mother, who inspired this script? How did you first perceive Elizabeth’s character?

MELANIE LYNSKEY: I did get to speak to Laura. She was on set and she was so wonderful. She’s such a sweet person. That was the first thing that I really loved about the script, was how specific it felt. I was like, this feels real. Then to find out that it was actually her true story was really beautiful. Elizabeth was just so loving and so good, without being boring. I responded to that. I liked that she felt like a fully-realized human being, but was also just pure maternal love.

You and Sunny Sandler are so natural and funny together. Talk about the first time you met Sunny, the conversations you had with her about your characters, and working with her on screen.

The first time I met her was in the production office. She came in, and she was so disarming, sweet and such a genuine teenager. I had seen her [You Are So Not Invited to My] Bat Mitzvah movie, and I thought she was great in it. But to meet her and see how completely unguarded and genuine she is was a real relief. She’s a real sweet human being. And then getting to know her, it’s just been a joy. She’s so caring, so thoughtful. She’s just raised well. They’re a good family, she’s a really good kid. She worked so hard. She would have a day off, and she would be in musical theater rehearsals—just working so hard all the time. I just really appreciate her, and was really grateful that we had a true bond with each other that we didn’t have to fake.

The first time I really fell for your character was when Elizabeth is belting out “Firework” by Katy Perry in the parking lot. You just keep going! Can you tell me about filming that?

It was a nightmare. [Laughs.] The thing that made it okay was, they had a vocal coach, Fiora, who was working on the movie, helping the kids with all of their stuff. She’s absolutely incredible. Fiora came and did some work with me. I’m petrified of singing. I love karaoke, but I’m like the Simon Cowell of karaoke, I always say, because I just tell people what songs to sing and then say, “That’s not your song, you need to do this song.” But I don’t really sing myself, I’m very scared of singing.

The thought of being in a parking lot, belting out “Firework,” was so difficult. Fiora got me to a place where I felt so comfortable. There were so many people standing in the street, watching ,because everyone wanted to see if they could see Adam. I was okay to just do it, and it’s a miracle. She’s a miracle worker, truly.

You sounded great!

That’s not true, but thank you. I just needed to be not afraid. I think that came across. That’s what I kept telling myself. I was like, “It doesn’t have to be good ,and it shouldn’t be good.” It’s always a little weird when someone’s not a singer, and then they sing and it’s perfect. You’re like, what?

I also love the scene where you and Sunny are trying out Southern accents. You’re already acting in your not-normal accent, so I’m wondering what filming that sequence was like, adding another layer to the accent work.

My regular American accent that I do is so second nature at this point. It was just fun. It was fun to do that. It was to do anything with Sunny—days working with her were always just so easy. She made it very easy.

DON'T SAY GOOD LUCK. (L to R) Melanie Lynskey as Elizabeth, Director Julia Hart and Sunny Sandler as Sophie on the set of Don't Say Good Luck.

How do you feel when fans tell you they have no idea you weren’t American because it sounds so natural on you, the accent?

Oh, thank you. Yeah, people do that all the time. People are always confused and think that I’m like putting on some kind of voice or something like that. I feel lucky that I still have my New Zealand accent, because I’ve lived in America for so long.

Elizabeth works so hard in the movie to put on a happy face and hide her pain from her daughter. As a mother yourself, do you relate to that instinct, and do you think Elizabeth was right to do that?

That was something we talked about a lot on set. It’s impossible to know, I think, until you’re in that situation. We’re very honest with our daughter. We talk to her about everything. She talks to us about everything. So it’s a little hard for me to imagine… but also you do have a protective instinct. You do want to shield your kids. I understood it, even though I don’t know if that would be exactly what I would do.

I’m wondering if while you were making this movie, if any feelings about motherhood came up, like did it reaffirm any beliefs you had about being a mom or make you rethink anything?

For me, being a mother is just the greatest thing I’ve ever done. I had my daughter when I was 41, so I had a lot of a life before I had her. I feel like a different person, you know? She’s just my whole world. I love her so much. I’m obsessed with her. She knows that. I think having that to hold on to when you’re playing a mother, and realizing the things you love about your child are so specific and unique to them. And they’re also things that you’ve been seeing in them since they were babies. It just helps so much with a performance when you are playing a mother, and you know what the experience is like.

Tell me a little bit about working with Adam Sandler, who’s a producer on this film, and your take of how the whole Sandler family works together for these Happy Madison productions.

He’s a wonderful producer. He was very a nice mix of hands-on and hands-off. Sunny’s such an incredible actress, and she was very much doing her own thing. There was nobody stepping in with anything to do with anyone’s performance. He was very much in charge of what the tone was going to be, and also setting the tone on set, in terms of like being a wonderful human being—being very kind to everybody, being very personable. Within their family, they’re all such great people. There’s no room for bad behavior. It really set a lovely tone. I do understand why people go back and work with him and the company time and time again, because it’s just very relaxed, very easy. I see why people are so loyal because, they’re great people. Jackie’s amazing. Sunny’s amazing. Sadie’s amazing. They’re just a really good family.

Jeff, Shauna, and Callie in the Yellowjackets Season 1 finale

Photo: Showtime

Have you wrapped on filming the fourth and final season of Yellowjackets? And if so, without giving too many details, can you say what kind of scene was the last one that you filmed?

I have wrapped. I finished a week and a half ago. I filmed a scene with Warren Kole, who plays Jeff. That was the last scene we filmed, and it was the scene, on the last day of shooting. So it was a wrap for the entire series. It was crazy. I mean, they said, “That’s a wrap on Yellowjackets!” Everybody was clapping and cheering, and Warren and I were just sitting there, just staring at each other. It was very hard for us to process the fact that that was the last time. He’s such a treasure to me. I just love him so much. I said to him, “I don’t think we’re going to get to work together again.” And he was like,”I know.” It just has been such a joy. He’s just one of the greatest scene partners I’ve ever, ever had in my life.

We had a lot of speeches. Different crew members gave speeches—producers, and our creators and crew members were shouted out in particular ways. Trophies were handed out. People were crying. I was crying, so much. I got a little trophy that said “Best Person Ever,” from the crew, which was the greatest trophy I’ve ever won. It was such an emotional day. It’s very weird. It’s been such a big part of my life. My daughter was 11 months old when I did the pilot, and now she’s almost eight. The not going back to it is just sort of crazy.

In a tragic incident at Virginia State University early Saturday, five people fell victim to gunfire, with one currently fighting for their life, according to university and VSU Police sources.

“Police were dispatched to the 3300 block of Boisseau Street around 1:28 a.m., where they encountered five individuals outside the residence halls who had been shot,” a representative of the university conveyed to News Media.

“All five have been taken to local hospitals. One remains in critical condition, while the other four are recovering from non-life-threatening injuries,” added the representative.

VSU police noted that the incident unfolded near the student housing area known as the Quad Annexes.

“Police are on scene and request that you avoid the area,” the statement read.

The university said earlier on X that the shooting involved “multiple suspects.” No arrests have been announced.

The campus initially went into lockdown, but the lockdown has now been lifted, according to the university official.
