Kaia Gerber Reveals a Surprising Family Secret to the World

0

Despite their seemingly glamorous lives, the privileged offspring of celebrities—often dubbed “nepo babies”—don’t have everything handed to them. While wealth and networking come easy, nature has the final say when it comes to their appearance.

Numerous daughters of famous actresses and supermodels find themselves overshadowed, partly due to the “curse” of resembling their fathers. Kaia Gerber, however, defies this trend. The buzz around Gerber stems from her uncanny resemblance to her mother, iconic supermodel Cindy Crawford, evoking nostalgia reminiscent of the 1980s for many.

At 24, Kaia—daughter to the ever-stunning Cindy Crawford, now 60, and debonair entrepreneur Rande Gerber—naturally gravitated toward modeling. Her journey began precociously, with a debut for Young Versace at just ten.

Completing their photogenic family line-up is Kaia’s older brother, Presley, a 27-year-old model, leaving the Gerbers as strong contenders for the title of America’s most visually appealing family.

Still, beneath the shimmering spotlight, not everything is perfect. This week Kaia Gerber seized the chance to discuss her emerging acting career in a Vogue magazine interview, offering a glimpse into the complexities that even the most flamboyant admirers of the fashion elite couldn’t ignore.

Gerber, now one of the highest-paid models in the industry – she makes an estimated $5 million annually – opened up for the first time about her own eating disorders and her brother’s long struggle with depression and drug addiction, during which he was arrested for driving under the influence. He pleaded no contest to the charge in 2019 and was sentenced to three years probation. ‘When something like that happens in a family, it kind of levels everyone,’ she said.

Her brother’s problems – which famously led to him getting a face tattoo that read ‘misunderstood’ – made her determined to be the ‘easy’ child and not compound her parents’ difficulties, she said.

‘I started to self-identify as the easy one and never wanted to ask for help. Because it felt like too much to have two children who were needing,’ she said.

She said she was so determined not to be a burden on her parents that, when she moved into her own apartment in New York at the age of 17, she was too proud to phone her mother and ask her how to turn on the dishwasher.

‘I never wanted to embarrass them,’ she told Vogue. ‘I never wanted to be that child coming in and ruining all the hard work they’ve done. I wasn’t a partier in high school.’

A source who knows the family confirmed everything Kaia told the magazine, telling the Daily Mail this week that the Gerber siblings were ‘deeply bonded’ but had ‘metabolized the pressure’ of living in such a scrutinized and picture-perfect family in very different ways.

The insider went on: ‘He became like this wild child whose distress was allowed to be visible and disruptive. Kaia took an interesting approach by becoming extraordinarily self-contained, competent and a low needs person.

‘They will say that they have very different memories of their childhood. Presley needed help constantly – [that] was the vibe in the house. He gets permission to do that. So, what does she do? She becomes overly controlled, accommodating.’

Not, insisted the source, that Kaia resents her brother even though at one time his behavior placed ‘enormous strain’ on her. She told Vogue she is deeply proud of him.

Meanwhile, the parents, ‘the real deal when it comes to parenting’ – have long been concerned about the negative impact that Crawford’s fame and their wealth could have on their children.

That wealth rocketed after Casamigos, the tequila brand that Rande Gerber set up with George Clooney, was bought in 2017 by drinks giant Diageo for $700 million.

‘They’re extremely morals-based and family is paramount,’ said the source of Crawford and Gerber. ‘She was deeply concerned about [the children] being raised right.’

However, Presley’s failure to anything like match his sister’s stellar success in modelling cannot have helped any feelings of insecurity about living in a highly successful family.

By Kaia’s own admission, her revelations and those of her brother are a huge break with the policy of their parents to be ‘very, very private,’ but she said: ‘There’s only so much you can hide from the world. And trying to put a lid on something just makes the person feel like you’re ashamed of them.’

Kaia, who has long wanted to act, has her first starring role in TV drama series The Shards. The glossy Ryan Murphy adaptation of a Bret Easton Ellis novel about a serial killer stalking a group of fast-living, rich LA kids has been hailed as a return to form for the veteran TV writer and producer.

His decision to cast Gerber and Homer Gere, son of Pretty Woman star Richard Gere, in leading roles was a stroke of marketing genius given that Cindy Crawford and Richard Gere were famously married between 1991 and 1995. (Homer, 26, is Gere’s son by his second wife, actress and ex-Bond Girl Carey Lowell).

Homer, who shares Vogue’s front cover with Gerber, told the magazine how, 20 minutes after meeting her for the first time in a bar just days before filming started, he decided to address the elephant in the room. ‘I was like, “Should we just acknowledge the fact that our parents were married?” She was like, “Yeah. Cool.” And that was it.’

The Gere-Crawford marriage was, however, anything but ‘cool.’ Some dismissed the union of one of the world’s top models and one of its most handsome screen stars, a spontaneous affair in Las Vegas in which Crawford had to wear a ring hastily made from aluminum foil, as a promotional stunt.

Others speculated it was to hide Gere’s rumored homosexuality (such whispers having been based on little more than the fact he had a lot of gay friends). The supermodel admitted years later that ‘it wasn’t the wedding I had dreamed of as a little girl.’

Gere went on to marry twice after their split; first to Homer’s mother, Carey Lowell, then to activist Alejandra Silva his wife since 2018. Instead, Crawford blamed their age gap and their careers keeping them apart for the marriage’s failure. Three years after they split up, she finally got a wedding worthy of the name when she married Rande Gerber in the Bahamas and their union remains one of the most enduring in the entertainment world.

And yet, as their daughter has made clear, the couple have had their challenges. Kaia says she struggled with issues of body image as being endlessly compared to her mother eventually affected her mental health.

‘We’re clearly in one of those cycles right now where people are very, very, very thin,’ she told Vogue. ‘As someone who’s been thin most of my life, I’ve always been compared against my mom – like, ‘What’s wrong with Kaia’?’

She said she felt ‘so jealous’ of her mother’s figure. ‘I would have loved to be born with boobs and a butt. People have always commented on my body, which is hard because I’m not always ready to comment on my own body, you know?’

She said she has had ‘disordered eating in my life’, adding: ‘People are like, “You look terrible,” and it doesn’t exactly make you go, “Oh, good. Let me get over this mental illness then!” Negativity has never saved someone’s life.’

Gerber even opened up to Vogue about her love life, her current boyfriend is actor and musician Lewis Pullman and son of film star Bill Pullman, and admitted she found the scrutiny of her boyfriends in her teenage years ‘challenging.’ Previous romances have included comedian Pete Davidson and actors Austin Butler and Jacob Elordi.

She added: ‘I think I’ve been labeled in ways that are quite misogynistic: serial dater, slut, greedy. My mom is always like, “Just don’t make the same mistake twice.” And I’m pretty good at not.’

Kaia admitted she has always been envious of her mother's figure saying, ‘I would have loved to be born with boobs and a butt.'

Gerber also appears to be ‘pretty good’ at coping with being dismissed as a nepo baby, simply owning the fact that she is one. ‘I’ve only ever been a nepo baby, and I’ve only ever benefited in my career from it,’ she told Vogue.

The Daily Mail has reached out to Kaia’s representatives for comment.

Her brother is a different matter. Presley Gerber is hardly the first offspring of a Hollywood star to struggle to cope with a parent’s fame.

Aged 15, he shocked his parents when he came home with his first tattoo, the word ‘Grateful’ written in a large font on his forearm, after trying to hide it by wearing a large hoodie in the sweltering heat. ‘That was a night to remember for sure!’ he recalled years later.

He would have many more tattoos, some of them one word ‘reminders’ to him of how he should feel. They included ‘Misunderstood’ – which he had tattooed on a cheekbone, just below his eye and first revealed in 2020 but later removed. He insisted he’d been misunderstood his entire life.

‘Presley is obviously going through a super rebellious phase right now,’ a source told Us Weekly at the time. ‘He is trying to get out of the shadow of his family and find his own way and create his own identity.’

He first publicly discussed his mental health issues in an appearance as a guest on the Studio 22 podcast in 2023, saying he wanted to share his own stories in the hope that they would help others in a similar position.

‘Having struggled with mental health, depression, and some other things that come along with that, I think that whether I help one person or a hundred people get out of that place that I was in at one point in my life, that’s all I need to do,’ he said.

‘I’ve grown up in Hollywood and there’s a lot of people around here that I love to death,’ he said in an Instagram video last December. ‘But right now, I try not to be around them.’

In the same candid online missive to his 138,000 followers as part of a series of posts he calls ‘Mental Health Mondays’, he also addressed the prescription drugs he was taking. They included buprenorphine (which can be used to help control craving and block the ‘high’ of other drugs), Xanax and Valium for panic attacks. He said he’d been sober from alcohol for five months.

He described developing a dependency on prescription medication after seeing more than 15 psychiatrists who, he said, intensely medicated him without setting out a structured recovery plan.

Presley, who claimed he was being so candid because ‘I feel like honesty is the best rule’, also revealed he had received ibogaine therapy, which is primarily used to tackle severe substance abuse disorders such as opioid or cocaine addiction by reducing drug cravings and withdrawal symptoms.

The Daily Mail has reached out to Presley’s representatives for comment.

Cindy Crawford posted a comment on her son’s video, saying: ‘Presley, we love you and you’re not alone.’

Living with this turmoil, her daughter, who was modelling on the catwalk for Calvin Klein just days after turning 16, had to grow up fast.

Should she now become as successful an actress as she already is a model, one wonders how that will go down with a brother apparently struggling to keep up with his family’s stellar fame and fortune.

Christopher Chung Reveals Hidden Power Behind Iconic Bullwhip Scene in ‘My Brilliant Career

Netflix’s latest period drama, My Brilliant Career, has captured the hearts of viewers worldwide, with one memorable scene leaving a particularly strong impression—the now-iconic bullwhip scene.

**Spoilers for My Brilliant Career Episode 2 “HE,” available now on Netflix**

While the show dazzles in its entirety, Episode 2, titled “HE,” stands out as a sparkling display of romantic tension and chemistry. At the heart of My Brilliant Career is the protagonist, Sybylla Melvyn, played by Philippa Northeast. Invited by the wealthy suffragist Augusta Beecham (Kate Mulvany) to her stunning estate, Five Bob, Sybylla aims to launch her writing career and avoid the societal trap of marriage for support. During her stay, however, she forms an electrifying bond with Augusta’s charming nephew, Harry, portrayed by Christopher Chung. Building fences, sharing ideas, and indulging in playful apple-eating sessions define their budding connection, but the moment truly ignites when Harry unveils his favorite spot on the estate to Sybylla.

In a twist of playful daring, Sybylla decides to dive into a serene pond, only to playfully feign distress. Alarmed by her stillness, Harry leaps into action to save her, only to discover it was a mere prank. His initial fury subsides almost instantly—a testament to their captivating dynamic.

“Sybylla has this extraordinary ability to swiftly pacify Harry’s emotions,” Christopher Chung shared with DECIDER. “After she hops into the pond and he storms off, she simply places her hand on his chest, reminiscent of calming a spirited horse with a gentle ‘Whoa.’”

“I think that moment…is very important and special to the two of them.”

Also very important and special? What happens next: the bullwhip scene.

After their little moment in the pond, Harry and Sybylla ride across the ranch. At one point, Harry impressively uses a bullwhip to redirect cattle. Syb immediately wants a go. Harry lets her try it for herself, but when she fails at the first try, he takes it upon himself to give her a lesson. He comes up behind her, his arm coils around her waist, and the two begin moving as one, cracking the whip.

“So that was one of the first things I did when I came from London to Sydney to start prep for the show was learn how to whip,” Chung said. “There were definitely a few duds there because it’s all in the wrist. There’s nothing about power. It’s just how well you can use your wrist to flick it out to crack the air. But when you get it, the satisfaction that you get when you crack a whip nicely and it makes that proper earth-shattering sound that goes out against the landscape is just wonderful.”

Then, Harry takes the moment one step further. He asks Sybylla to stand still and then asks, “Do you trust me?” The music intensifies as he begins to whip at her feet. We crosscut to Sybylla getting into a bathtub to pleasure herself to the memories of Harry cracking that whip.

So I think when we were doing the actual day, surprisingly, I don’t know why, they wouldn’t let me crack a whip next to Pip,” Chung said, sarcastically. “I was really good at it by then, too, so I was surprised that they wouldn’t. I guess we still had to get through the rest of the shoot.”

Chung also revealed that the steamy scene was one of the first things that he and co-star Philippa “Pip” Northeast shot together.

“So we had to find that chemistry very, very quickly. But we were both really game to make sure that we did these characters justice,” he said. “So it was the way that [director] Alyssa [McClelland] had told us how the shots were going to be, we knew that it was going to be very suggestive, and it was gonna be used later on in montages.”

“We kind of knew what the moment had to be charged with so that was that was really fun and also, like, if you start your shoot from that point having that chemistry, it takes all the other awkwardness away.”

Delta Flight Experiences Double Diversion Due to Lavatory Leak, Stranding Passengers for Hours

0

A Delta Air Lines flight en route from Paris to Seattle had to make an unscheduled landing in London after the crew encountered a mechanical problem with one of the aircraft’s lavatories, the airline confirmed.

On August 13, Delta Flight 81 departed from Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport, destined for Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. However, a technical issue led the flight crew to reroute the aircraft to London Heathrow Airport.

The Airbus A330-900, at the time of the incident, was carrying 209 passengers along with 13 crew members, according to details released by Delta.

As the aircraft neared Heathrow, the crew declared an emergency with air traffic control due to the necessity of performing an overweight landing, the airline reported.

Despite the emergency declaration, the aircraft landed normally and safely at Heathrow.

Delta maintenance personnel then serviced the Airbus in London in an effort to address the lavatory-related mechanical issue.

“We apologize to our customers for their experience and delay on Delta Flight 81 from Paris-Charles de Gaulle to Seattle, which diverted to London Heathrow after the crew reported a mechanical issue involving an onboard lavatory,” a Delta spokesperson said in a statement to News Media.

“This is not the experience we strive to provide, and we’re focused on getting our customers to their destinations as quickly and safely as possible.”

Once maintenance work was completed, the aircraft departed Heathrow, but the disruption meant passengers still faced an additional detour before reaching their intended destination on the West Coast.

Instead of continuing directly from London to Seattle, the flight headed to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport because of the crew’s available duty time, according to Delta.

Passengers cleared U.S. Customs at JFK before continuing their journey to Seattle.

The unusual itinerary ultimately took the 209 passengers from Paris to London, then across the Atlantic to New York before they could continue on to Seattle.

49ers Quarterback Released from Hospital Following Rib Injury in Preseason Opener

0

The San Francisco 49ers have been grappling with injury woes ever since this year’s training camp kicked off, not a promising sign as the team looks toward the 2026 season with hopes for better health.

During Thursday’s preseason opener against the Tennessee Titans, the 49ers faced a setback as they saw two players leave the field due to injuries. The game started off on a challenging note when, on the first drive, cornerback Jack Jones suffered a hand injury that forced him out of the game.

Another concern arose with third-string quarterback Kurtis Rourke, whose health scare necessitated a trip to the hospital. However, reassuring news came from team officials, who informed reporter Cam Inman that Rourke was released from the hospital later that evening.

Rourke had been dealing with shortness of breath, prompting further imaging exams when the stadium’s X-ray machine didn’t indicate any fractures.

The exact moment he suffered the rib injury remains unclear, but speculation suggests it may have occurred during a hit on a run near the 1-yard line. After completing three series, Rourke was substituted with Adrian Martinez midway through the second quarter.

Martinez was the only quarterback in uniform after Rourke’s departure, since neither Brock Purdy or Mac Jones had suited up Thursday.

Rourke shined in his preseason debut, completing 12-of-14 passes for 100 yards and showed off his mobility as a signal-caller. He missed all of the 2025 season as he recovered from ACL surgery.

The 49ers selected Rourke with the 227th overall pick in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Had Martinez also gone down with an injury, the 49ers would have been forced to turn to tight end Brayden Willis.

The team had prepped Willis for emergency duty, which would have included solely handoffs.

The injury woes in San Francisco have been unrelenting thus far with the regular season less than a month away.

Trump’s Latest Appointee Sparks Online Frenzy with Bizarre Empty Binder Video

A video of President Donald Trump’s latest appointee has sparked widespread attention online, drawing comments for its unusual content. Viewers were quick to zero in on Kelly Loeffler’s peculiar walk as she clutched an empty binder, labeling the scene as ‘awkward’.

Loeffler, now serving Trump as the small business administrator, became the center of internet buzz after a TikTok clip emerged on Friday. The video has triggered a wave of intrigue, with savvy social media users highlighting the peculiarities.

The 55-year-old former Georgia senator was videoed walking stiffly down a series of hallways, holding a black binder which appeared to contain no paperwork, as she answered a series of questions from an off-camera voice.

During the video, Loeffler is questioned, “First of all, are you in the Cabinet?”

She promptly affirmed, “Well, actually, I am.”

Loeffler elaborated on her new role, recounting, “After an incredible conversation with the President over the phone about becoming the SBA administrator, he texted me later saying, ‘Actually, you’re going to be in the Cabinet. That’s a really big deal.'”

‘And it is because the SBA administrator isn’t guaranteed a spot in the Cabinet. But because President Trump knows that small business is big business, this is a Cabinet spot now.’

After more questions surrounding her position, and even her height, the video concluded – but the internet exploded with commentary around the awkward taping.

‘I need to see some other videos of her because there’s no way she moves like this,’ another user commented.

A third quipped: ‘I remember my first time walking. She’s doing so well!’

‘I know it’s a joke but why does she walk like that?’ another asked.

A sixth user wrote: ‘Why is she carrying around an empty binder????’

Loeffler had previously served in the Senate after she was appointed by Georgia Governor Brian Kemp in 2019.

The ‘self-made businesswoman,’ according to the SBA website, then ran in the Georgia Senate special election in 2020.

‘She championed conservative values, advocated for small businesses, and passed legislation to strengthen healthcare, veterans’ services, and economic growth. A decade-long WNBA team owner, she was the first U.S. Senator to introduce a bill to protect girls’ sports,’ the site said.

But Loeffler, the wife of billionaire Jeffrey Sprecher, was beaten by Democrat Raphael Warnock.

Stuart’s Secret to a Perfect Lawn: A Heartwarming Tale of Resilience After Loss and Six Hip Surgeries

0

The aerial view presents a striking contrast. In this quaint part of Yorkshire, where gardens appear scorched and fields are bone-dry, Stuart Grindle’s lawn stands out like a verdant oasis. Its vibrant green hue is so intense it seems as if nature herself has applied a vivid filter.

“If you publish an aerial photograph, I might just receive some hate mail,” quips the 83-year-old ex-joiner with a chuckle.

“That’s happened before,” he recalls, referencing the time when ITV used a drone to capture his lush, emerald lawn amidst the surrounding browned landscapes. “People wrote to me, annoyed, asking why I was watering my lawn during a drought.”

The pressing question arises: why does he manage to keep it so green?

Stuart simply states, “Firstly, we don’t have a hosepipe ban in effect here at the moment.”

‘And people want to look a bit closer at the pictures. You’ll see I have four water butts. I’m very water conscious. To be honest, I don’t even like putting tap water on the lawn, the grass doesn’t like it.

‘And when I do put the sprinkler on – I have a 360 degree one – I only have it on for ten or 15 minutes. Gardens don’t want more. Grass wants to be damp, not wet.

‘Where people get it wrong is that they put the sprinkler on and then go and watch Coronation Street. Your grass won’t thank you for it.’

Stuart confessed to spending up to 16 hours a day, and tens of thousands of pounds over the years, tending his lawn

Besides, Stuart pays £1,200 a year for his water: he’s on a fixed rate. He had words with someone from Yorkshire Water over this last year, when there WAS a hosepipe ban.

‘I said “if I buy a three piece suite – a sofa and two chairs – from John Lewis, they won’t send them to me and say “you can’t sit in the chairs”.’

Why am I here, on one of the hottest days of the year, sitting in Stuart’s little oasis of a garden in Tickhill, Doncaster, doing little more than watching the grass grow (to be fair, it’s mesmerising. And a little addictive)?

Because when it comes to working out how to maintain England’s green and pleasant land, Stuart is your man.

It is now nine years since Stuart won a competition to find Britain’s best lawn. In 2017, his garden – his life’s work – became a national talking point, an object both of lust and fascination.

The man who confessed to spending up to 16 hours a day, and tens of thousands of pounds over the years, tending his lawn, who’d been known to get down on his knees with kitchen scissors to perfect the edges, became an overnight sensation.

Gardener’s World sent a camera crew (‘my wife, Anne, was hoping for Monty Don, but she didn’t get him’) and a German newspaper sent a reporter to test the springiness underfoot.

‘He arrived and said “I’ve brought you a present, Mr Grindle”, but it was a garden gnome. I said, “I’ll find somewhere for it”.’

You’re not a garden gnome man, then? ‘I am not,’ he says.

The German reporter proudly showed him photographs of his lawn. Stuart was not impressed: ‘It wanted digging up. It wanted a cultivator. I asked how often he cut it and he said “quite regularly, at least once every two weeks”. I was cutting mine twice a day at that point.’

Having agreed to open his lawn to the public, all proceeds to charity, Stuart (and the long-suffering Anne, who called herself a lawn-widow) found himself inundated with visitors.

Then there were the weddings. One bride asked what it would cost her to have her wedding pictures taken on his lawn. He said “it will cost you nowt, lass”, and along came the wedding party.

‘I did tell her she’d have to take her shoes off because I can’t have stilettos on my lawn,’ he recalls. Happily for him (and the grass), she was happy to go barefoot.

Of course, we all love looking at other people’s lawns, particularly when our own have shrivelled up and died.

Today we chat about singer Rod Stewart’s lawn in Essex, which has been in the papers looking strikingly vivid.

Stuart would like to know what grass seed Rod uses (his own favourite is ‘Bent’, which is the stuff they use on golf greens, and is so fine you can’t use it if there is any wind at all).

He tells me, however, that his mowing days are over. What wasn’t reported at the time of his lawn-fame is that he’d already had a double hip-replacement, after a lifelong battle with arthritis. He was diagnosed at the age of 28 and had his first hip replacement at 36.

He’s now had six new hips (‘they call them “revisions” after the first set’). He also has two new shoulders, and he walks with a stick. Even getting to the end of the garden is a struggle.

Pushing a lawn-mower, even his beloved machine which cuts to 5mm? He hasn’t done it for years. He can no longer get down on his knees for forensic examination, either.

So how on earth is this garden still looking so splendid? This is partly down to his son Jonathan, who now lives with him, and who knows his way around a pair of pruning shears, but mostly because of his friend Dan, who tends the greens of a local golf course.

‘He comes and does my garden for me. No charge,’ Stuart says. ‘He does it because he’s marvellous and because he knows what it means to me. I’m the luckiest man in the world.’

Dan pops in most days. He’s doing the edging at the moment, down on his knees, refusing tea. ‘I direct operations,’ says Stuart.

Glen, the photographer who hung out of the upstairs bedroom window years ago, has come back to take the pictures today, and shows Stuart the old images on his phone. He assesses them with the most critical eye on the planet.

‘It was in better shape then,’ he says of his grass, ‘but it’s not too bad now in comparison. But because we’ve had this drought. We’re in maintenance mode. It’s just a case of keeping it alive.’

One of the most striking images from before is of Stuart and Anne standing proudly in the middle of their garden, arms outstretched. He takes the phone and gives the image a little kiss. Anne died in December. This has been the first summer without her. It has been a long one.

‘Dementia,’ he says. ‘She had it for about three years. It was awful towards the end. She got quite violent. She didn’t know what she was doing. We had to lock the doors.

‘She stopped eating in about September, I mean just stopped, wouldn’t have more than a spoonful of yoghurt. She was in hospital eventually, then a nursing home at the end.’

He had Dan plant a little memorial garden for Anne halfway down, behind a tree called a Lace Lady which sweeps elegantly over the lawn. There is now a little bench there, which we meander down to (I’m only allowed on the grass because I have trainers on). The dwarf conifers are coming on nicely in this shaded spot.

‘I just sit and think about her. Little Annie. We rarely had a cross word, you know. We met at 17, married at 21. She was the only one for me.’

How did you know she was the one? ‘The nurse’s uniform,’ he deadpans. They met at a youth club and married in 1964, living with his mother at first then buying their first home (complete with postage stamp sized garden) in Maltby.

In 1969 they moved to a new development in Worksop and in 1973 Jonathan was born. There was a golf course nearby, however, and Stuart found himself gazing at the green and becoming ‘a little obsessed’.

His next door neighbour’s father was a green keeper and they got chatting about grass seed. It wasn’t until they moved to this house, in 1976, that they had a sizeable garden to work with.

It was scrubland before Stuart got to grips with it, and even then he let friends use it as an allotment before his passion really took over. ‘I sowed the seed myself,’ he recalls. ‘No turf here. And then I watched it grow …’

Half a century on, he’s still watching. He has a keen eye. ‘I don’t like gardens that go up and down, that’s why there are no straight lines in mine. The eye has to be drawn. You go “oh, that’s interesting, what’s over there”.

How much has he spent on this garden over the years? ‘I’d say about £60,000’. That’s not including the man hours.

When he was working Stuart would get up at 6am to ‘swish’ (basically brush the lawn), then come home from work and immediately get to mowing. After retirement, he could spend entire days on his grass. He never let Jonathan kick a football on the lawn. They couldn’t go on extended holidays because the garden couldn’t handle the neglect.

Dare we ask if he will ever leave his garden, or worse, let nature take over? He’s already let a couple of sections go, ‘but no, I’d find that very hard. It’s my life’s work, this is 50 years of my life, of Anne. I’ll leave it when they carry me out.’

Will he care about what happens after he is no longer here, then? He says Jonathan is unlikely to keep the garden. ‘Nope. He’ll sell up, and maybe some young couple will come in, with two little snappers, and rip it all up.’

What if they put down – the horror! – artificial grass, and have an entire family of garden gnomes? ‘I won’t be here,’ he says. ‘They can do what they like. That’s the thing about a garden. It’s personal.

Williston Woman Charged in Fatal I-75 Motorcycle Crash: Seeking Justice for Victim’s Family

0

Staff report

In Gainesville, Florida, a grave charge of vehicular homicide has been leveled against Tiffany Katara Sams, a 45-year-old resident of Williston. This development follows the revelation that Sams was under the influence of alcohol when she collided with a motorcyclist on Interstate 75 in August 2023.

The fatal incident occurred in the early hours of August 29, 2023. At approximately 12:22 a.m., Sams was piloting her sedan north along I-75 near mile marker 387 when tragedy struck. She struck a motorcyclist from St. Cloud, who had been riding in the same lane ahead of her. Following the impact, the motorcyclist was thrown onto the roadway while the motorcycle became lodged beneath Sams’ vehicle, propelling it forward another 1,500 feet. The motorcyclist succumbed to their injuries.

An investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) revealed a lack of brake marks or tire skids, suggesting that Sams did not attempt to decelerate before the crash. During a post-Miranda interview with authorities, Sams claimed she only noticed the motorcyclist at the last moment due to a supposed absence of motorcycle headlights and taillights. However, FHP’s findings contradicted her narrative, confirming that both the headlight and taillight were operational, evidenced by the presence of “hot shock” at the time of the collision.

In a decisive turn, a blood sample obtained from Sams at the accident site revealed a blood alcohol concentration of 0.224 g/100mL, confirming significant impairment.

A sworn complaint for vehicular homicide while intoxicated was filed in January 2026, and a warrant was issued on July 28; Sams was arrested on August 12. Sams’ address was listed as Gainesville in 2023, but she told Court Services that she has lived in Williston for the past year. She has two felony convictions (non-violent) and six misdemeanor convictions (two violent); Judge Susan Miller-Jones ordered her held without bail pending a hearing on a motion from the State Attorney’s Office to hold her without bail until trial; if the judge denies the motion, bail will be set at that hearing.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Italy Court Decision Sparks New Hope for Australian Citizenship Seekers

0

In 1986, when Ophelia Bryant visited Italy for the first time, she felt an indescribable connection to the country.

“It was as if I had finally found my home,” she shared with SBS News.

Her deep ties to Italy come naturally—both of her parents and all four grandparents were born there before they moved to Australia in 1955, where Bryant was born three years later.

Italy has always been a significant part of her identity, with Bryant making more than a dozen trips back to strengthen her bonds with her relatives and her heritage.

However, her pursuit of Italian citizenship revealed a complex legal hurdle rooted in her family history.

Her parents became Australian citizens in 1961, when Bryant was a child, and later formally renounced their Italian citizenship.

A vintage, black-and-white photograph shows a man and woman together. The words "Enzo and Luciana Suicero" are written underneath.

Under a restrictive interpretation of Italy’s citizenship laws, known as the ‘minor issue’, that could break the line of citizenship transmission.

“I thought the door was closed because of that minor rule,” Bryant said.

Now, a landmark decision by Italy’s highest court has changed that legal interpretation — and Bryant is “optimistic because that door may finally be open”.

A rule that divided Italian citizenship cases

The so-called minor issue arose from conflicting interpretations of Italy’s 1912 citizenship law.

One provision established that children born overseas to an Italian citizen could acquire Italian citizenship from birth.

Another was interpreted as meaning that when an Italian parent became a citizen of another country, their minor children could lose their Italian citizenship along with them.

That interpretation gained ground through Italian court decisions from 2023 onwards, leading to the rejection of citizenship-by-descent applications.

But in July, Italy’s Supreme Court’s United Sections, the court’s highest panel for resolving conflicting legal interpretations, ruled that citizenship acquired at birth was not automatically lost when an Italian parent subsequently naturalised in another country.

Brisbane-based Italian lawyer Fabrizio Fiorino, who advises clients on Italian citizenship applications, said the decision effectively restores the previous interpretation of the law.

“It was not a change in a provision, but it was a change in the interpretation of rules,” he said.

A woman smiles while feeding pigeons in a European square, with birds perched on her shoulders and arms.

He told SBS News the ruling means people who were Italian citizens from birth cannot simply be considered to have lost that citizenship because their parents later became foreign citizens while they were minors.

For thousands of people whose citizenship applications were rejected on that basis, the decision could provide a pathway back.

A second chance for those already rejected

Italy’s interior ministry has since issued a letter instructing authorities to follow the Supreme Court’s interpretation.

It also provides a mechanism for people whose applications were rejected because of the minor issue to request their original applications be reconsidered, rather than starting the process again.

Fiorino says he has already seen the consequences of this play out.

One of his clients was recently denied citizenship after the consulate rejected her application because of the minor issue while the Supreme Court case was still pending.

He is now preparing a request for her application to be reviewed under the new interpretation.

“I think in a few weeks they will know the outcome,” he said.

But there is an important catch.

The new pathway does not mean everyone affected by the minor issue automatically becomes an Italian citizen.

What does it mean for Ophelia?

Bryant’s situation is more complicated because she never actually lodged an application.

Having spent more than two years trying to secure an appointment with the Italian consulate in Melbourne, she told SBS News that she repeatedly found that no appointments were available.

She also said she came to believe she was ineligible under the minor issue and therefore never formally submitted a claim.

That means she cannot simply ask the consulate to reopen a rejected application.

Fiorino said people in her position will need to apply under the current rules and have their individual circumstances assessed.

“The minor issue aspects may not affect, in this situation, her position, because it’s been sorted out from the [Italian] Supreme Court,” he said.

But other criteria introduced under Italy’s separate 2025 citizenship reforms may still apply.

For Bryant, that distinction is frustrating.

“I think the way the law is going, I think Italy would recognise the claim,” she said.

“But it is a question of how you get the claim in.”

Administrative barriers

The legal victory could also create a new administrative challenge.

Fiorino said consulates are likely to face a significant increase in requests for reviews, while demand for new citizenship applications is already high.

From 2027, Italy’s new system will also change how citizenship applications are processed, with applications ultimately being handled through a central office in Italy, he said.

For Bryant, the prospect of another bureaucratic hurdle is daunting.

“If you can’t get an appointment at the embassy, how can you even get the ball rolling?,” she said.

A woman in a red hat and white scarf stands beside a horse statue, touching its head.

She has already collected certified copies of Italian family birth records, travelled repeatedly to Italy and researched her family history.

She will return again in September and is considering seeking further legal advice while she is there.

‘I’m actually joining the circle’

After years of uncertainty, the ruling has renewed Bryant’s hope that she may still be recognised as an Italian citizen.

When she first heard the minor issue had been overturned, she said she was “blown away”.

For Bryant, Italian citizenship is not about rejecting Australia, a country she said gave her family the opportunity for a fresh start.

Instead, she said formal recognition of her Italian citizenship would connect her with the history they left behind, and the heritage she has maintained throughout her life.

“It would sort of validate that I am in fact Italian,” she said.

And after years of believing the legal door was closed, she is prepared to try again.

Top 5 Dark Fantasy Movies You’ll Want to Watch Again and Again

0

Fantasy and dark fantasy, though they share common elements, are divided by distinct differences. Classic fantasy often paints a clear picture of good versus evil, inviting viewers into a world they might long to inhabit. In contrast, dark fantasy weaves a narrative richer with horror elements. While traditional fantasy celebrates its heroes, dark fantasy tends to thrust its characters into perilous situations, leaving audiences at the edge of their seats, hoping for their survival.

Dark fantasy films can be unnerving enough that one viewing is plenty. Yet among these, you’ll find movies so engaging that revisiting them becomes irresistible. Despite featuring ominous creatures, such films often impart valuable lessons on overcoming fear. And even amid initial fright, there’s a unique thrill, maybe even enjoyment, to be discovered.

The most captivating dark fantasy films skillfully blend humor and whimsy amid the chaos. Embracing the eerie and macabre doesn’t suggest there’s anything amiss with you; it’s all part of the chilling charm of this genre.

Pan’s Labyrinth

Guillermo del Toro stands as a maestro of horror and dark fantasy. His works are fascinating for mirroring monsters against the backdrop of real-world atrocities committed by ordinary humans. This theme is powerfully portrayed in “Pan’s Labyrinth.” Here, the story fixates on Ofelia (Ivana Baquero), a young girl moving with her ill and expectant mother to the home of her vicious stepfather, Captain Vidal (Sergi López).

While del Toro’s film presents a range of creatures, none are as vile as Captain Vidal, a symbol of tyrannical fascism and toxic masculinity. As Ofelia ventures into a mystical underworld, convinced of her royal past, she encounters the Pale Man (Doug Jones). This entity symbolizes the selfishness of those in power, amassing resources for themselves. The Pale Man feasts alone, and when Ofelia dares to taste two grapes, his wrath is swift and fearsome.

Of course, not every creature is as horrific as the Pale Man. Ofelia gets guided by a Faun (Jones) who operates in a morally neutral territory. He is neither good nor bad but operates on a more cosmic scale, giving Ofelia her hero’s journey to test her if she’s worthy or not. Del Toro crafts such a vibrant world where humanity is filled with all sorts of evil, and there’s something much better waiting for Ofelia elsewhere.

Coraline

By virtue of being rated PG, “Coraline” never gets too terrifying compared to the other films on this list. All the same, it’s one of a few PG films that could genuinely give you nightmares, especially once we reach the Other Mother (Teri Hatcher). Before then, the story follows Coraline Jones (Dakota Fanning), who has just moved far away with her inattentive parents. Feeling bored, she discovers a new realm lurking inside her home that seems wonderful at first but harbors dark secrets.

“Coraline” makes for a great entry point for young kids who want to get more into dark fantasy and horror. For starters, Coraline is a perfectly relatable protagonist. Everyone can understand the idea of feeling bored beyond belief. We all wish for something extraordinary to happen in our lives and take us away from unbearable mundanity. Maybe we even resent our parents a bit for not playing with us all the time, even though they have to work.

But something being exciting initially doesn’t always mean it’s what’s best. While this other dimension has entities that look like Coraline’s mother and father, they’re something else entirely. And they demand that Coraline sew buttons over her eyes to join them. There’s a fantastic lesson in there about tackling life head-on rather than always trying to find an escape. And all of this is brought to life with vivid stop-motion animation, which gives the characters and landscapes an uncanny valley feel. Everything feels more alive than it might have in live action, and the story is all the richer for it.

Spirited Away

Like “Coraline,” “Spirited Away” is another story of a young girl coming of age and using otherworldly creatures as metaphors. It also involves the girl, Chihiro (Rumi Hiiragi/Daveigh Chase), moving to a new town, but needing to save her parents after they eat food not meant for them and turn into pigs as a result. Chihiro is forced to grow up sooner than she would’ve liked and takes a job at a bathhouse to get her parents back to normal and return home.

“Spirited Away” may be a children’s film, but there are all sorts of haunting images. Chihiro’s parents turning into pigs is some straight-up body horror, and the film introduces all sorts of fascinating creatures who represent the various paths Chihiro (and by extension, all of us) can take in life. Notably, there’s No-Face (Akio Nakamura/Bob Bergen), who adopts the greed and/or isolation of anyone around him. He’s a manifestation of how so many are willing to lose their own identities for the sake of getting ahead in life.

Chihiro meets many characters throughout her journey, and they often operate in shades of gray morally. For children watching, it shows how people may not actually be how they present themselves on the surface. And the original storyline of “Spirited Away” would’ve been over three hours long, so there could have been even more fantastical creatures for Chihiro to encounter on her journey had that vision been brought to the big screen.

Army of Darkness

It’s understandable if the “Evil Dead” movies aren’t everyone’s cup of tea. Not only are they straight-up horror flicks, but they’re pretty gruesome ones at that. There’s a sadistic sense of humor throughout Sam Raimi’s original trilogy, but there’s also ample gore. If you like your horror with a healthy dose of comedy and dark fantasy thrown in, then “Army of Darkness” is everything you could want and more. Honestly, more horror franchises should be willing to take this big a swing with the third installment.

After surviving Deadites in “Evil Dead II,” Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell) gets transported to the Middle Ages and will have to acquire the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis to stop an army of the undead and get back to his time. There’s some horror, but nothing on the level of the last film, which helps immensely with its rewatchability. More than anything, the film pivots hard into turning Ash into an action hero with quippy one-liners like “This … is my boomstick” and “Groovy.”

“Army of Darkness” knows precisely what it’s trying to be, and everything from the slapstick comedy to the stop-motion skeleton army serves its gleefully ridiculous vision. As the title suggests, there’s an element of darkness to the whole affair, but nothing that makes the film unbearable to watch. If anything, rewatching “Army of Darkness” will make you realize the “Evil Dead” franchise needs to liven up a bit and bring back this level of goofiness.

The Dark Crystal

A lot of dark fantasy movies will have a human protagonist to be our anchor into a more fantastical world filled with monsters and creatures. But “The Dark Crystal” is truly a wild swing because it discards the notion of humanity’s importance. Instead, we’re dropped into another planet filled with Gelflings, Skeksis, and urRu. All of this gets brought to life gloriously via puppeteer Jim Henson, creator of the Muppets.

Everything about “The Dark Crystal” has such a lived-in feeling. From the backgrounds to the environments, there’s a tactile nature to everything, probably because the film was made during a time before CGI and green screens ruled everything in Hollywood. Watching “The Dark Crystal” these days isn’t just about the story, which still holds up, but appreciating all of the human effort that went into making a singular vision come to reality.

There may not be any humans, but there’s still a very human story at the heart of “The Dark Crystal.” Through their greed and corruption, the Skeksis have stripped their world of natural resources, and the only way to restore balance is for Jen (Henson) and Kira (Kathryn Mullen) to repair the Dark Crystal. With so much wrong with the world, it can begin to feel like one person can’t make much of a change. Despite its darkness, “The Dark Crystal” offers hope that a damaged world can still be healed if someone is brave enough to act.

Shohei Ohtani Nearing Impressive Return to Dodgers’ World-Class Rotation

0

Shohei Ohtani has recently made significant progress in his journey to return to the mound after contending with a lingering left knee injury.

Ahead of Friday’s matchup at Dodger Stadium, the dynamic two-way player took a major leap by completing his first bullpen session in over three weeks. Ohtani pitched from the Dodgers’ left-field bullpen just a few hours prior to taking on the role of designated hitter against the Milwaukee Brewers, marking a crucial step forward.

The stalwart pitcher has not started a game since July 3, as he continues to battle a knee issue that began troubling him in mid-June. During the All-Star break, he received a lubricant injection in a bid to expedite his return to the Dodgers’ rotation. Unfortunately, after a bullpen session on July 22 in Philadelphia, his knee regressed, forcing the Dodgers to put a temporary halt on any throwing activities for two weeks.

Last week, Ohtani returned to the field for pregame catch sessions, completing three such exercises on the grass in the days that followed.

Earlier this week, Dodgers’ manager Dave Roberts announced that Ohtani was nearly ready for another bullpen session, nurturing the team’s anticipation of seeing the four-time MVP resume pitching duties before season’s end.

Now that Ohtani has checked off that important box, his road map to returning to the Dodgers’ rotation should be clearer.

According to Roberts, the right-hander will likely need “a few ‘pens” before he faces hitters again in live batting practice. Once he completes a live BP, however, he could be ready to return to game-action, where he will be built up one inning at a time –– similar to his midseason ramp-up last year when he was returning from a second career Tommy John surgery.
