Deadly Violence Strikes Mountain Getaway Amid Officials’ Reluctance to Address Gang Activity

0

Authorities in Asheville, North Carolina, have confirmed that a deadly shooting in the city’s downtown area, which resulted in two fatalities and injured seven others, was an act of retaliation. However, they have refrained from labeling the incident as gang-related, despite its occurrence in the tourist-friendly Blue Ridge region.

The incident unfolded in the early hours of July 19, near the bustling intersections of Biltmore Avenue and Short Coxe Avenue, a district known for its shops and vibrant nightlife. The Asheville Police Department (APD) reported that officers arrived on the scene at approximately 2:20 a.m., discovering numerous individuals with gunshot injuries.

Despite immediate attempts to save lives, two individuals succumbed to their injuries at the scene. Seven others were transported to Mission Hospital for further treatment. Police officials stated that detectives recovered a significant number of shell casings, indicating the extent of the crime scene.

Initially, police indicated that the evidence might link this shooting to a previous gun-related incident. Shortly after, Interim Police Chief Jackie Stepp clarified that the attack was indeed an act of direct retaliation, connected to a shooting that occurred at an apartment complex on July 5.

Stepp said the deadly episode was the “latest chapter” in an ongoing pattern of retaliatory violence across the city. One person was shot in the July 5 incident, she said, and investigators made an arrest in that case.

But the chief declined to classify the violence as gang-related at a community briefing on July 24, when reporters pressed her about whether the people involved belonged to rival gangs or families.

“These are two groups of individuals,” Stepp said at the briefing. She said the groups had ties because the people involved knew one another and had committed “ongoing retaliatory acts” against each other.

Stepp said police had identified several persons of interest in the Biltmore Avenue case but were still working to locate and interview them. She also declined to discuss whether those shot were intended targets or to provide details about the connection between the July shootings, citing the active investigation.

The chief said APD was coordinating with local, state and federal partners as it reviewed evidence and tracked upcoming events and large gatherings.

Stepp later reportedly told ABC local station WLOS that gang activity exists in the city, though she maintained the recent shootings are “not traditional gang activity.”

At the community briefing, the question whether the violence should be called gang-related resurfaced when a local pastor who identified himself as a gang-prevention facilitator told Mayor Esther Manheimer he had offered the city a prevention program since 2016.

The pastor asked why the program had not been considered as a way to prevent gang violence. Manheimer said she had recently seen his email and wanted to learn more, but pointed to Buncombe County’s community safety and violence-prevention plan and the city’s existing prevention partnerships.

“We’re always open to looking at other ideas,” Manheimer said, adding that the city was seeking ways to expand and improve its response to community violence.

Manheimer also argued that North Carolina’s loosening gun laws and limits on local gun regulations had made it harder for cities to address the problem.

She said businesses have an increasing responsibility to prevent people from bringing guns into their establishments, though she said recent disputes often escalate after someone retrieves a weapon from a vehicle.

A reporter asked Stepp about prior reporting that a Glock switch was involved. Stepp confirmed the discovery, saying police had recovered one and that “that’s what we saw here.” She did not say whether it came from the shooting scene, a vehicle, a suspect or another piece of evidence.

APD has asked anyone with information about the shooting to call 828-252-1110, submit an anonymous tip through the TIP2APD app or text TIP2APD to 847411.

News Media has reached out to APD, Manheimer’s office and the pastor who raised the gang-prevention program for comment.

The captain in command of the ill-fated boat that tragically overturned and sank near the iconic Statue of Liberty, resulting in the deaths of two individuals, now faces a slew of charges.

Manuel Hernandez, aged 46, is confronted with 13 counts of reckless endangerment. The charges arise after a 27-year-old woman and a five-month-old infant girl lost their lives when the vessel capsized in the bustling waters of New York Harbor on a fateful Saturday night.

Allegations against the boat captain suggest he was piloting the 22-foot bowrider motorboat while dangerously overcapacity, carrying 14 passengers when it overturned around 10:30 PM, as reported by the New York Police Department.

Responding emergency teams discovered the woman and the infant girl at the accident site, both of whom were airlifted in critical condition to NYU Langone Hospital in Brooklyn, according to police sources.

Tragically, both victims succumbed to their injuries. As of now, it remains uncertain whether the deceased were related, and their names are being withheld pending notification of their families, stated the NYPD.

A large search and rescue operation was launched after the incident, as 12 people were rescued with minor injuries and transported to hospital.

Harrowing cries from loved ones of the victims could be heard at the hospital, the New York Post reported.

‘No. Why? Why? No,’ a relative reportedly screamed in horror. People at the hospital were also reportedly still holding their life jackets.

Multiple units from the FDNY, Harbor, Scuba and Aviation, responded to the scene in the Hudson River near Buoy 32 between the Statue of Liberty and Bay Ridge Anchorage, police told CNN.

Divers with the New York Police Department were also seen in the water rescuing passengers.

Footage from the scene showed multiple emergency vessels in the water flashing lights.

The Daily Mail has reached out to the NYPD for more information.

The tragedy comes just over a month after a seaplane carrying eight people crashed into the East River, sparking an intense rescue effort on July 5.

The NYC Fire Department said the Kodiak 100 single-engine turbo prop made a hard landing on the water but all on board were safely rescued.

Two of them were Khloe Todd, 16, and her grandmother Ada Todd, 75, who were in the Hamptons celebrating one of Ada’s friends’ birthday.

‘Plane is upright in the water and being towed back to dock. Eight civilians removed from plane by FDNY units,’ FDNY said at the time.

‘Two civilians with minor injuries are being evaluated by EMS.’

New Yorkers filmed the plane hit the choppy water and partially capsize, and rescue boats scramble to help the passengers from the stricken aircraft.

The passengers and crew were seen being assessed by ambulances near the entrance to FDR Drive after being brought to shore.

The aircraft was flying in from East Hampton Town, Long Island, and departed at 10.38am, according to flight data.

Blade Air told the Daily Mail the hard landing was likely caused by choppy water from passing boats and Saturday night’s thunderstorm.

‘There were a lot of ferries in the vicinity and there may have been wind at the last second,’ a source at the company said.

‘The waves they create can be a problem as you try to land on the water.’

Blade said the impact cracked one of the plane’s struts – which connects the pontoons to the body of the plane – which also caused damage to one of the pontoons.

Court Reveals Video; Nanny Calls Lindsay Clancy a “Wonderful” Mom

0

On Wednesday, Lindsay Clancy’s former nanny painted her as a “wonderful mom” as jurors listened to testimonies in Clancy’s ongoing murder trial.

In a Massachusetts courtroom, Elaine Rossi, who served as a nanny for Lindsay and her ex-husband Patrick Clancy last year, shared her insights. Her testimony was broadcast during the trial by the Associated Press, adding depth to the proceedings.

“I saw a wonderful mom who adored her kids,” Rossi relayed to the jury on August 5. “She was vigilant about their safety, always ensuring Callan was eating and sleeping well. Truly, she was a remarkable mother.”

Lindsay Clancy has entered a plea of not guilty concerning three first-degree murder charges related to the tragic deaths of her children: Cora, aged five, Dawson, three, and young Callan, just eight months old.

According to the AP, Rossi’s employment with Lindsay spanned from September to December in 2022. She disclosed in court that Lindsay had confided in her about struggling with postpartum depression and insomnia, noting the presence of prescription medication bottles in the house.

During Rossi’s testimony, prosecutors played a video she had previously sent Clancy showing baby Callan drinking from a bottle, according to People.

Clancy is accused of strangling her children in the basement of her family’s Duxbury, Massachusetts, home in January 2023 before jumping from a second-story window, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down.

Her ex-husband, Patrick Clancy, made the discovery after returning home. According to testimony, he found Lindsay Clancy in the backyard, where she told him she had attempted suicide before directing him inside to the bodies of their children.

Prosecutors allege the killings were deliberate and premeditated. Her defense team, however, argues Clancy was experiencing postpartum psychosis at the time of the deaths.

“This is a woman who was suffering from psychosis at the time that she went down to that basement,” defense attorney Kevin Reddington told jurors on July 27. “She had no motive. She loved her children. She intended to kill herself. She didn’t fake that.”

If Clancy is convicted of murder, she faces life in prison without the possibility of parole, per the AP. If she is found not guilty due to a lack of criminal responsibility, she would instead be committed to a state mental health facility.

Understanding Vibrio Vulnificus: The Deadly Bacteria Behind 7 Fatalities in Gulf Coast States

0

An alarming increase in fatalities has been recorded in Florida and Louisiana this year, where Vibrio vulnificus, a harmful bacterium, has claimed seven lives. This bacterium is notorious for causing severe, potentially fatal infections.

WASHINGTON — Known for its flesh-eating capabilities, Vibrio vulnificus has led to the deaths of seven individuals in 2023, striking fear across communities in Florida and Louisiana due to its severe and life-threatening nature.

This formidable bacterium typically thrives in warm, brackish waters. Infection occurs most commonly when someone ingests raw or improperly cooked shellfish, such as oysters, though direct exposure through open wounds in contaminated water can also be a transmission route.

With the peak tourist season underway along the Gulf Coast, health officials are urging visitors to remain vigilant and take protective measures against infection.

Louisiana, in particular, has experienced a worrying uptick in cases, reporting nine infections and five deaths this year alone. This marks a significant rise compared to the state’s usual average of one death annually, according to the Louisiana Department of Health.

All nine Louisiana patients were hospitalized, all had underlying health conditions, and all contracted the bacteria through wound exposure to seawater, officials said.

Florida has recorded at least 14 cases and two deaths.

What is “flesh-eating” bacteria?

Vibrio vulnificus is a naturally occurring bacteria found in warm, salty and brackish coastal water, particularly along the Gulf Coast.

It is not a new threat and has been present in U.S. waters for decades, but cases tend to rise during the summer because of the warmer water temperatures between May and October.

There are two main ways to get infected by Vibrio vulnificus. One way is through eating raw or undercooked shellfish, particularly oysters. Another common way is by exposing an open wound to contaminated seawater.

It cannot spread from person to person.

The bacteria earns its nickname because severe wound infections can cause necrotizing fasciitis, which is a rapid destruction of skin and soft tissue around the wound. In serious cases, amputation may be needed to stop the spread.

About one in five people infected with Vibrio vulnificus die, sometimes within 24 to 48 hours of getting sick, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Who is most at risk?

People with weakened immune systems, liver disease, diabetes or other chronic health conditions face the highest risk of serious illness.

Healthy people can be infected but typically experience milder symptoms.

All nine of Louisiana’s 2026 cases involved patients with underlying health conditions, according to the state health department.

How can you protect yourself?

  • Avoid exposing open wounds, cuts or broken skin to seawater or brackish water.
  • Do not eat raw or undercooked shellfish, especially oysters.
  • If you develop a rapidly worsening skin infection after ocean exposure, seek medical attention immediately.
  • If you have a weakened immune system or chronic illness, consider avoiding saltwater exposure altogether during summer months.

Innovative Vaccines Undergoing Trials to Prevent Colon Cancer Formation

0

In Houston, Texas, a poignant memory marked Dr. Stacy Norton’s early life—losing her mother to colon cancer at just seven years old. This personal history of aggressive familial tumors inspired Norton to take a step forward decades later. She joined efforts testing a groundbreaking vaccine with hopes of shielding herself and her children against cancer’s relentless grip.

Dr. Norton is among approximately 1 million Americans living with Lynch syndrome, a genetic predisposition inherited from parents that significantly elevates the risk of colorectal cancer and other malignancies. As a preventative measure, those affected endure frequent screenings, often subjected to annual colonoscopies, aimed at detecting and removing precancerous polyps before they progress.

Innovations in preventive medicine are now advancing, with scientists working on vaccines that would teach the immune system to fend off emerging colon cancers associated with Lynch syndrome before they escalate into tumors. Currently, three potential vaccines are under development, with two undergoing early clinical trials in the United States and another embarking in the United Kingdom.

The vaccine that Norton assisted in testing has shown such potential that Dr. Eduardo Vilar-Sanchez from MD Anderson Cancer Center anticipates the commencement of a more extensive study early next year.

“It gives me hope,” expressed Norton, 59, associated with Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital. Having survived a Lynch-related cancer herself and with two children in their twenties who have inherited the mutation, she eagerly awaits the vaccine’s fruition. “If successful, my children might not have to undergo annual colonoscopies for the rest of their lives,” Norton envisions optimistically.

Lynch syndrome is caused by an inherited genetic mutation

Everyone has what are called mismatch-repair genes, which are essentially spellcheckers to help fix DNA mistakes that can occur when our cells multiply. With Lynch syndrome, one of those genes can’t do its job properly, making it harder for the body to stop a buildup of abnormalities that can lead to tumors, often before age 50.

El-Sayed Engages with Obama Amid Michigan Democrats’ Effort to Heal Senate Primary Divisions

BRIDGEWATER, N.J. – Abdul El-Sayed, who is running as the Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate seat in Michigan, announced on Sunday that he had an encouraging conversation with former President Barack Obama. El-Sayed expressed hope that Obama would campaign alongside him as Democrats work to overcome divisions that surfaced during a contentious primary season, highlighting splits between the party’s progressive and moderate members.

Describing his Friday talk with Obama as “really warm and inspiring,” El-Sayed chose not to divulge further specifics of the discussion.

In an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” El-Sayed stated, “I was grateful for his advice. It was very warm, very inviting, and I know that he knows the critical role that Michigan is going to play.”

When queried about the possibility of Obama visiting Michigan to rally Democratic voters ahead of the November midterm elections, El-Sayed expressed strong hopes for such an event. The former president’s past successes in securing Michigan during the 2008 and 2012 presidential elections underscore his understanding of the state’s political landscape.

A representative for Obama later confirmed that the call took place.

The discussion came the same day that a group of Michigan nominees and other notable national Democrats tried to present a united front at a rally in Detroit. The crowd cheered loudest for El-Sayed, a former public health official who last week narrowly beat establishment-backed U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens in a contentious and closely watched primary. A Democratic victory in the fall is crucial to the party’s chances of regaining a Senate majority.

Democratic Sen. Gary Peters is not seeking reelection in the perennial swing state, which Republican Donald Trump won in 2016 and 2024, while Democrat Joe Biden carried in 2020.

El-Sayed faces Republican Mike Rogers, a former congressman who narrowly lost the Senate race to Democrat Elissa Slotkin in 2024 and has tried to capitalize on lingering tensions within the Democratic Party.

Rogers has released a video message attempting to appeal to Democrats who feel their party may be moving too far to the left with El-Sayed. “You have a home with us,” Rogers says in the video.

During an interview Sunday with CNN’s “State of the Union,” El-Sayed acknowledged that “we aired our differences” in the heated primary. But he said the internal divisions are “so much smaller than the similarities that we share.”

“You’re seeing folks come together,” El-Sayed said, before adding of moderate Democrats, “We might see the world differently. But we also recognize the responsibility to come together.”

5 Morning Workouts to Slim Your Waist Faster Than Crunches

0

Is your waistline expanding after 50? Incorporate these 5 standing exercises—no crunches required—to tackle it effectively.

>

As people enter their 50s, many observe that their waistlines start to widen, even if their weight on the scale seems unchanged. Factors like a slowing metabolism, diminishing muscle mass, and increased sedentary habits contribute to a thicker midsection and a weakened core. While some might instinctively resort to crunches, hoping they’ll trim their waist, these exercises target only a portion of the abdominal muscles. They fall short of delivering the total-body strength and calorie expenditure necessary for sustained transformation.

Achieving a slimmer waist involves engaging multiple muscle groups, not just focusing on the abs. Standing exercises that utilize your legs, hips, shoulders, and core require more energy and teach your deep abdominal muscles to stabilize the spine during everyday activities. This holistic approach not only tones the muscles around your waist but also promotes better posture, often making your midsection appear slimmer just by standing taller.

In my experience coaching adults over 50, the most significant changes come from dedicating time to functional movements that engage several muscle groups simultaneously, rather than performing endless floor exercises. These five routine exercises build core stability, enhance balance, and boost overall strength, contributing to a more defined waistline. Integrate them into your morning schedule, and you’ll start your day feeling empowered and robust from within.

Standing Cross-Body Knee Drives

Whenever someone wants to wake up their core first thing in the morning, this movement usually tops my list. Bringing the knee across the body forces the obliques, lower abdominals, and hip muscles to work together while the supporting leg strengthens your balance. I encourage clients to move slowly enough to feel every repetition instead of rushing through the exercise. Many notice their posture improves within a few weeks because the deep core muscles become much more active. It’s a simple movement with tremendous carryover into everyday life.

How to Do It

  • Stand with your feet hip-width apart.
  • Lift one knee across your body toward the opposite elbow.
  • Rotate your torso slightly.
  • Return with control.
  • Alternate sides.
  • Continue for 45 to 60 seconds.

The Simple Ball Drill That Trains Your Brain to Prevent Falls After 60

Standing Wood Chops

The core spends much of the day resisting and controlling rotation, making wood chops one of my favorite functional exercises. This movement strengthens the obliques, shoulders, hips, and abdominal muscles while teaching your body to rotate smoothly and safely. Clients often tell me they feel muscles working that crunches never seemed to reach. I especially like how the exercise mimics real-life twisting movements like loading groceries or reaching across a countertop. Functional rotation builds a stronger waist than repetitive spinal flexion alone.

How to Do It

  • Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart.
  • Hold a light dumbbell or clasp your hands together.
  • Start near one hip.
  • Rotate diagonally upward across your body.
  • Return slowly.
  • Perform 10 to 12 repetitions per side.

Sit-to-Stand with Overhead Reach

One of the fastest ways to tighten the waist involves strengthening the muscles that burn the most energy. This exercise recruits the glutes, quadriceps, shoulders, and core while encouraging your abdominal muscles to stabilize your spine throughout the movement. I often recommend reaching fully overhead because it improves posture while increasing core engagement. Clients frequently report feeling stronger during everyday activities after adding this exercise to their routine. Better posture creates the appearance of a trimmer waist almost immediately.

How to Do It

  • Sit near the front of a sturdy chair.
  • Stand while reaching both arms overhead.
  • Tighten your core.
  • Lower your arms.
  • Sit back down slowly.
  • Perform 12 to 15 repetitions.

5 Daily Exercises That Trim Upper Arms Faster Than Gym Machines After 60

Lateral Step with Reach

Side-to-side movement strengthens muscles that often receive very little attention during traditional workouts. Lateral stepping activates the hips and glutes while the overhead reach forces the core to stabilize continuously. I include this exercise because it improves balance, coordination, and mobility while gently raising the heart rate. Clients often notice they move more confidently throughout the day after practicing this pattern consistently. Every step strengthens the muscles that help support a firmer midsection.

How to Do It

  • Stand with your feet together.
  • Step to one side.
  • Reach both arms overhead.
  • Return to center.
  • Alternate directions.
  • Continue for 45 seconds.
