Energy companies were accused of capitalising on ‘the misery of others’ yesterday after forecasting a surge in profits.
Centrica, which owns British Gas, predicted its profits for the year would be at ‘the top end’ of expectations due to sky-high energy prices.
National Grid, which operates most of the UK’s electricity and gas supply networks, has also upped its forecast after reporting a 50 per cent jump in profits in September.
Energy companies have raked in billions following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, with surging prices crippling household budgets.

Simon Francis, of the End Fuel Poverty Coalition, said: ‘We’re hearing stories about people being disconnected after being forced on to prepayment meters, people that are living in one room because they can’t afford to heat their houses, and pensioners going without hot meals.
‘These companies are making huge amounts of money off the misery of others.
