Samuel Alito was born to Italian immigrant Samuel A. Alito Sr. and Italian-American Rose Fradusco in Trenton, New Jersey.

His grandparents came from the villages of Roccella Ionica and Palazzo San Gervasio in southern Italy.

His father earned a master’s degree from Rutgers University and taught high school before becoming the first Director of the New Jersey Office of Legislative Services, which he held from 1952 to 1984. Alito’s mother was a schoolteacher.

He is a member of the Italian-American ethnic group. Alito grew up in Hamilton Township, New Jersey, a Trenton suburb.

The subject of Samuel Alito’s religion is still unclear. According to Britannica, he is a Roman Catholic.

He was class valedictorian at Steinert High School in 1968 and the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University in 1972.

After graduating from law school, Alito clerked for Third Circuit appeals judge Leonard I. Garth in Newark, New Jersey in 1976 and 1977. He sought for and was not hired for a clerkship with Supreme Court Justice Byron White.

As an Assistant United States Attorney in New Jersey, he prosecuted various cases involving narcotics trafficking and organized crime.

Samuel Alito has been married to Martha-Ann Alito, a former law librarian who met during his numerous excursions to the library as a legal clerk and has family origins in Oklahoma, since 1985.

Their two grown children, Philip and Laura, are their pride and delight. Alito resided with his family in West Caldwell, New Jersey.

From 1977 to 1981, Alito worked as an Assistant United States Attorney for the District of New Jersey.

He served under Assistant United States Attorney Maryanne Trump Barry, who later became a federal circuit judge and chaired the appeals division.
