In the United Kingdom, Mark Lane works as a landscape designer, writer, and TV gardening presenter. His love of gardening compelled him to enroll in an Open Learning course to retrain as a garden designer.

After Reading One Of His Writings, the BBC approached him as a TV presenter. As a result, Mark Lane became the only disabled presenter in Gardeners’ world.

Mark Lane is also associated with the Garden Media Guild, an organization that brings together professional garden writers, novelists, photographers, broadcasters, editors, and anybody interested in the field.

Why Is Mark Lane In Wheelchair?

Mark Lane was in a vehicle accident in 2000 and had several spine surgeries. Thus, he had to use a wheelchair due to problems with spina bifida.

Lane is the first wheelchair-bound BBC gardening presenter in the United Kingdom. He was supposed to spend the years 2000 to 2002 recovering physically and mentally by adapting to the new life.

Mark is now a well-known figure in the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), where he frequently appears and is interviewed.

Mark Lane also sat in the renowned black chair on Celebrity Mastermind Series 16, 2018/2019, Episode 1, and answered questions about 1906 Dutch painter Piet Mondrian.

Mark has created a unique environment for Derriford Hospital / Plymouth ICU, the UK’s first Intensive Care Unit rehabilitation garden.

In the National Diversity Awards 2021, he was a finalist for “Celebrity of the Year.” Similarly, he was nominated for Best Residential Landscape Design Practice in the United Kingdom.

He also created a custom configuration for the photovoltaic PV panels that adorn the ceiling of the private pergola and lounging area. The wavey hedge that divides the view from the house to the lawned area is kept in shape by an occasional garden worker.

Car Accident Affected Mark Lane’s Spine

In 2000, Mark Lane was involved in an automobile accident that damaged his spine. Since then, Lane has had to rely on a wheelchair.

While in the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore, part of his therapy and recovery included gardening activities. Here, he realized the benefits of positive mental well-being by being at peace with nature.

Mark thoroughly enjoyed his Open Learning course and learned a lot. When he decided to write for Gardeners’ World Magazine, his spouse, Jasen, was encouraging.

During the Covid lockdown in October 2020, BBC Morning Live soon became the most popular early morning magazine-style live show. Since the beginning, Mark has been a part of the team as their gardening expert.

Mark has also covered disabilities, spoken about his automobile accident on television for the first time, and reported from the National Archives while researching his family history.
