Updated at 7:20 p.m. with information about added charges

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Horace Campbell, V, 36, was arrested yesterday and charged with armed burglary after allegedly refusing to leave an apartment upon request of the resident; he also allegedly battered and sexually battered the resident of the apartment and threatened to kill her; after the initial publication of this article, which stated those charges had not been filed, we received information that charges of sexual battery, aggravated assault, and battery on a disabled person are pending.

The victim told a Gainesville Police Department officer that she had known Campbell for some time and she let him in when he came to her apartment at Fairview Apartments, but he became aggressive, so she asked him to leave. She said he initially agreed to leave but pushed his way back into the apartment, then hit her multiple times and sexually battered her. She said he took out a knife at one point and said, “I’m going to kill you” and then left a short time later. The officer reported that the victim had visible injuries to her face and neck.

Post Miranda, Campbell reportedly admitted that the victim had asked him to leave and admitted hitting her and having a knife; however, he said he only used the knife on “blunts.”

Campbell has 10 felony convictions (one violent) and four misdemeanor convictions (none violent). He has served three state prison sentences, with his most recent release in June 2023.

Campbell is on probation after serving a two-year prison sentence for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, robbery, and drug possession; he was arrested in November 2023 after his probation officer reported that he had failed a drug test, was sentenced to 45 days in jail, and was released on December 21. His probation officer reported another violation on January 18 because Campbell did not report to the officer as ordered after his release from jail and moved from his residence at Fairview Apartments (where he lived at a different apartment from the victim in this case) without notifying the officer.

Campbell is being held without bond until the violation of probation charge is resolved; Judge Meshon Rawls set bail at $50,000 on the armed burglary charge.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
