The Brazilian Supreme Court has decided that Man City player Robinho will serve out his nine-year prison term for the gang rape of an Albanian lady in Italy at a Milan nightclub.

Robinho has an international arrest order out for him from Italy, but he has avoided jail time for the past seven years while residing in Sao Paulo.

During his time at AC Milan, on January 22, 2013, six men were found guilty of sexually abusing an Albanian woman in a club. One of them was Robinho, whose full name is Robson de Souza.

As part of the ruling, Robinho’s police-intercepted message transcripts were made public. Among them was a January 2013 message from Robinho to a friend that said, “I’m laughing because I couldn’t care less, the woman was completely drunk, she has no idea what happened.”

“I saw you when you put your penis inside her mouth,” a buddy of Robinho’s wrote in a different chat. Robinho responded, “That doesn’t mean having sex.” His sentence would not go into effect under Italian law until the appeals procedure was over.

Robinho was in Brazil at the time of the sentence, and Brazilian law prohibits the extradition of a Brazilian citizen to another nation.

Following an appeal, the Italian courts upheld Robinho’s nine-year prison sentence on December 10, 2020. The Milan Court of Appeals concluded that Robinho had “brutally humiliated” and “belittled” the victim. He also attempted to dissemble the events he and his friend Falco had decided upon in order to mislead investigators from the beginning.

On November 23, 2017, an Italian court convicted him guilty. Over the years, he has attempted to file an appeal multiple times without success.

Brazilian residents who have been condemned overseas are normally not eligible for extradition under the country’s constitution.

A Brazilian news outlet previously published audio recordings obtained by Italian authorities including Robinho discussing the case with friends.

In one of the videos, he says: “We will punch her in her face. You will punch her in the face and say; ‘What did I do to you?'”

And in another: “That is why I am laughing, I don’t care at all.

“The girl was extremely drunk, she doesn’t even know who I am.”

Another leaked conversation shows him saying: “If this comes out in the press, it will screw me.”

Brazil’s Superior Court of Justice has agreed with the Italian government’s request to extradite Robinho and his and to have the original sentence executed in Brazil.
