English actress Lily Chloe Ninette Thomson, better known by her stage as Lily James was born in Esher, Surrey, on April 5, 1989.

The 35-year-old actress is the daughter of Ninette Mantle, an actress, and James “Jamie” Thomson, a musician.

After attending the Hertfordshire-based Tring Park School for the Performing Arts, she graduated in 2010 from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. She joined London’s Tavistock Wood Management shortly after that.

She was nominated for a Golden Globe and a Primetime Emmy Award for her portrayal of Pamela Anderson in the biographical series Pam & Tommy (2022).

Career

 

She made her television debut in the British series Just William (2010). Her breakout performance came in the title role of the fantasy film Cinderella (2015), which she landed after playing a supporting role in the period drama series Downton Abbey (2012–2015).

She starred in Noel Clarke’s Fast Girls, which was based on a group of teenage female athletes participating in the World Championships, and as Korrina in the Warner Brothers movie Wrath of the Titans.

In Kenneth Branagh’s 2015 live-action Disney picture Cinderella, James portrayed Cinderella. For the December 2014 issue of Vogue, James was photographed by Annie Leibovitz as Cinderella, dressed in the blue ball gown that the character she portrays wears to the ball.

In the film, James also made her singing debut, performing the 1950 animated feature “Sing Sweet Nightingale,” “Lavender’s Blue,” and “A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes” during the closing credits.

In the 2016 BBC historical drama series War & Peace, she made a comeback to television as Natasha Rostova. In addition, she played Elizabeth Bennet in the action-horror movie Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, which was a parody of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. This was her second major motion picture role. It didn’t make even money at the box office and had mediocre reviews. In 2016 Rob Ashford and actor-director Kenneth Branagh’s Romeo and Juliet at the Garrick Theatre included James as Juliet.

She starred in multiple high-profile movies in 2017. She portrayed Debora, Baby’s romantic interest in Edgar Wright’s action movie Baby Driver. In Joe Wright’s war drama Darkest Hour, she portrayed Elizabeth Layton, a secretary to British Prime Minister Winston Churchill (Gary Oldman). She also starred in the drama film The Exception, set during World War II, in which she played a British spy who pretended to be Kaiser Wilhelm II’s valet.

In Ben Wheatley’s 2020 rendition of Daphne du Maurier’s Gothic romance Rebecca, which also starred Armie Hammer, James played the second Mrs. de Winter.

She portrayed Peggy Piggott in the 2021 British film The Dig, which was helmed by Simon Stone and was based on John Preston’s 2007 novel of the same name.

She was chosen to star as Pamela Anderson in the Hulu drama Pam & Tommy around the end of 2020.

She was signed on as a brand ambassador by the Natural Diamond Council, which supports diamonds that are sourced organically, it was revealed in September 2022.

At the Harold Pinter Theatre in June 2023, James co-starred with Kristin Scott Thomas, whom she had previously appeared with in Darkest Hour and Rebecca, in Penelope Skinner’s new play Lyonesse.

She will also star in the thriller feature Relay, to which she was initially linked in February of last year.
