Lin Yu Ting is a Taiwanese boxer and two-time world champion. She began boxing in 2008 at middle school in Taipei. The 5′ 9″ boxer made her debut at the 2017 Asian Championships in Vietnam. She was awarded the Best Boxer Trophy at the Asian Championships in 2017.

According to her Olympic biography, Lin is a three-time world championships medallist (bantamweight gold 2018, featherweight gold 2022, featherweight bronze 2019), two-time Asian champion (bantamweight 2017, featherweight 2019) and two-time Asian Games medallist (featherweight gold 2023, flyweight bronze 2018).

Lin made her Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020 where she lost in the featherweight round of 16 to Nesthy Petecio of Philippines. She entered the Tokyo Olympics as the top seed in the 57kg division but lost a 3-2 split decision in the round of 16 to Nesthy, who went on to claim silver. Lin gained revenge over Petecio in the round of 16 at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou (held in 2023), where she went on to win gold by beating Karina Ibragimova (KAZ) before sobbing her way through the medal ceremony.

She has spent time as an exchange student at Beijing Sport University in the People’s Republic of China. In 2021 she began serving on the champions and veterans committee at the International Boxing Association (IBA).

Lin Yu Ting defeated Sitora Turdibekova of Uzbekistan in the 57 kg round-of-16 match by unanimous decision in her opening bout at North Paris Arena at the Paris Olympics on Friday 2 August 2024 and advanced to the quarterfinals. She is one of the two female boxers embroiled in gender controversy at the Paris Olympics.

On 24 March 2023, IBA disqualified athletes Taiwan’s Lin and Algeria’s Imane Khelif from the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships New Delhi 2023. This disqualification was a result of their failure to meet the eligibility criteria for participating in the women’s competition, according to the International Boxing Association (IBA).

The athletes did not undergo a testosterone examination but were subject to a separate and recognized test, whereby the specifics remain confidential. This test conclusively indicated that both athletes did not meet the required necessary eligibility criteria and were found to have competitive advantages over other female competitors.

On 01 August 2024, the Paris 2024 Boxing Unit (PBU) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) defended the two female athletes competing at the Olympic Games Paris 2024. The PBU and the IOC said in a joint statement: “All athletes participating in the boxing tournament of the Olympic Games Paris 2024 comply with the competition’s eligibility and entry regulations, as well as all applicable medical regulations set by the Paris 2024 Boxing Unit (PBU). As with previous Olympic boxing competitions, the gender and age of the athletes are based on their passport.”
