() United States Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem has decided to end temporary protection for around 350,000 Venezuelans who sought refuge in the United States, a Department of Homeland Security source confirmed to .

Noem revoked one of two Temporary Protected Status designations for Venezuela, which the previous administration had placed due to extreme poverty, economic issues and political crises in the country, the New York Times first reported.

The program helped hundreds of thousands of Venezuelan migrants avoid deportation and find a path to citizenship in the U.S. The Biden administration on Jan. 10 extended protections through fall 2026.

The Trump administration’s move will revoke protection for those who received in 2023 as soon as 60 days after the memo’s official publication, The Washington Post reports.

Noem deemed conditions in Venezuela “no longer” met criteria for protection and that their presence in the U.S. was “contrary to the national interest,” referring to gang activity like that of Tren de Aragua, according to The Post.

In the final days of Trump’s first term, he granted Venezuelans permission to stay in the U.S., with now-Secretary of State Marco Rubio writing in 2022 that it would be a “very real death sentence” to send Venezuelans home.

According to the United Nations, there are nearly 8 million Venezuelan refugees and migrants in the world. The majority moved to nearby countries, like Colombia, Peru and Brazil, though more traveled to the U.S. border during Biden’s tenure.
