Why Teen Mom's Farrah Abraham Underwent Ketamine Therapy for 'Rage'

Teen Mom alum Farrah Abraham revealed she underwent ketamine therapy recently after suffering from “rage” issues due to her parents allowing her life to be televised starting at the age of 16.

“I had like a full circle event during winter and then I started ketamine because of this. I think it was, I’m actually enraged to think how my parents allowed me to be what they put me around at 16,” Farrah, 33, told hosts Big Jay Oakerson and Robert Kelly on the Thursday, March 13, episode of SiriusXM’s The Bonfire.

Referring to her 16-year-old daughter, Sophia Abraham, the MTV star continued, “I would never put my daughter around that or have her even think these thoughts and be so disconnected from me like I was with my family.”

“And I think I was just like, I know why my daughter doesn’t like me talking to my mom and my dad now … I feel like I’ve been way too nice,” Farrah continued about her parents, Debra Danielsen and Michael Abraham. “But I was also, like, a different situation. It’s like, I was forced to be around toxicity longer than my soul could stand.”

The Nebraska native appeared on an episode of MTV’s 16 and Pregnant in 2009. She was cast later that year on the original Teen Mom‘s first season, kicking off four seasons of having her life and that of her daughter documented for TV.

Farrah explained how having fame at such a young age traumatized her.

“When people were like, ‘Oh my God, you’re famous and you’re a Teen Mom!’ It’s like yeah, but then there’s the real you that needs to get out of a psychedelic parenting simulation and go be a real parent and go really do this. And that’s what I focused on,” she said about ketamine therapy.

Farrah noted that the “personal work” she did on herself over the years has helped Sophia greatly.

“I think being young and trying to find yourself and do personal work actually benefited my daughter, cause she’s seen me do the personal work, she got the benefit of it, and I don’t have to worry,” the former adult entertainment star said of her teenage daughter.

“She’s the least of any of my worries. She has so much wisdom, so fun. We just got back from Germany and London for her Sweet 16 and she has it all,” Farrah added, noting her daughter is lucky to have her as a mom. “I really wish I had a parent like myself, like she got.”

Farrah revealed she cut her parents out of her life during a May 2024 appearance on Rachel Uchitel‘s “Miss Understood” podcast. While she and her mom had issues over the years and didn’t get along, it was a bit of a surprise as Farrah seemed to have a closer relationship with her dad.

The My Teenage Dream Ended author explained that she cut off contact with Michael after completing a trauma treatment program in 2022, despite him helping her move from Los Angeles to Texas before entering therapy.

Farrah told fans in a March 1, 2022, Instagram post, “There’s no easy way to say this, I am headed to a trauma treatment center for 28 days.” She added, “I would say our healing is our true way of sharing our wealth and our success. So, I am taking time for my healing. I have ignored people for over 11 months, after having a sexual assault, and having my whole body break down, my whole brain break down.” Michael shared his support for Farrah seeking treatment in the comments.

“Leaving my trauma program, they actually also cut out a lot of people [from my life],” Farrah shared on the podcast. “So, I actually haven’t talked to my parents in two years from leaving the trauma center.”

“I am doing what’s best for my psychotherapist’s guidance, and everyone else who’s living by the 12 Steps,” she continued. “So, I am going very hard and fearless with that. Again, I just send my love and light to people. It’s out of just being healthy and balanced.”

Farrah added that daughter had joined her in not staying in contact with her folks, as well her late boyfriend Derek Underwood’s mother, Stormie Clark. Derek was killed in a car accident when Farrah was pregnant with Sophia.

“Sophia has decided to not speak to many of her grandparents,” Farrah told Rachel. “Not only my [parents], but her dads’ parents. She does still have a great relationship that she wants to be open with her grandfather on her dad’s side. So that’s great.”
