TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A huge win for the UConn Huskies Sunday as the team dominated the South Carolina Gamecocks and made history inside Amalie Arena.

Head coach Geno Auriemma cut the net for the 12th time.

“This is one of the most emotional Final Fours and emotional national championships I’ve been a part of since that very first one,” Auriemma said.

Both teams showed fight to start the game, but it wasn’t long before the Huskies took over.

Azzi Fudd scored 24 points and said going into the third quarter was when she knew they had a good lead.

“We played a great first half. We wanted to continue that. We didn’t want to let them back in the game. I think all of our mindset was just to be aggressive, stay locked in, stay disciplined, stay together. And that’s exactly what we did,” Fudd said.

Freshman Sarah Strong scored a record-breaking 114 points in the tournament, the most points scored by a freshman.

“I feel like I did better than I was expecting. It’s cool to score that. That wouldn’t have happened without my teammates, though,” Strong said.

All players shared their love and appreciation for senior Paige Bueckers. She said her time on the team has been a story of resilience.

“To be shaped, to be the person that I am today and the team we are today, and obviously you feel like on the other side of a really hard time is a really big blessing. And we stuck to it and kept the faith. And to be rewarded with something like this, you can’t really even put it into words,” Bueckers said.

Coach Auriemma gave a huge shoutout to UConn Nation, calling them the greatest fans in the world.
