Kyren Lacy Death Cause?

According to an LSU official who spoke to ESPN on Sunday, former LSU receiver Kyren Lacy was discovered deceased in Houston on Saturday night.

According to early accounts, suicide was the cause.

Lacy was charged with causing a crash on December 17 that killed a 78-year-old man and then fled the scene without providing assistance or contacting the police.

Lacy’s arrest warrant was issued by Louisiana State Police on January 10, 2025.

According to police records, he surrendered to the authorities on January 12, was taken into custody, and was later freed on $151,000 bail.

Lafourche (Louisiana) Parish Sheriff’s Office records indicated that Lacy was charged with negligent homicide, felony hit-and-run with death, and reckless operation of a vehicle. According to WAFB-TV, a grand jury was to begin hearing evidence in the case Monday.

Lacy allegedly “recklessly passed multiple vehicles at a high rate of speed by crossing the centerline and entering the northbound lane while in a designated no-passing zone” while operating a 2023 Dodge Charger on Louisiana Highway 20, according to a news release from Louisiana State Police.

“As Lacy was illegally passing the other vehicles, the driver of a northbound pickup truck abruptly braked and swerved to the right to avoid a head-on collision with the approaching Dodge,” according to a news release from the Louisiana State Police.

“A 2017 Kia Cadenza was following the pickup when its driver veered to the left to escape the approaching Dodge Charger.

In an attempt to avoid hitting the Dodge, the Kia Cadenza crossed the centerline and struck a southbound 2017 Kia Sorento head-on.

According to police, Lacy, 24, drove past the scene of the collision and ran away “without stopping to render aid, call emergency services, or report his involvement in the crash.”

State police say Herman Hall, a passenger in the Kia Sorento from Thibodaux, Louisiana, died as a result of his injuries sustained in the collision.

According to a statement from Rocky Arceneaux, Lacy’s agent, his client was “fully cooperating with the authorities.”

Two days after the collision, on December 19, Lacy submitted his NFL draft declaration. He did not participate in LSU’s Texas Bowl victory against Baylor.

He took part in LSU’s pro day in March, and ESPN’s Mel Kiper placed him as high as the sixth-best receiving prospect in the draft in December. In Kiper’s last Big Board, released last month, Lacy was not listed in the top 10 wideouts available.

Lacy began his career at Louisiana and played for LSU for three seasons. Last year, when he caught 58 receptions for 866 yards and a team-high nine touchdowns, Lacy had his best season.

Lacy’s lawyer released the following statement:

It is with profound sorrow that we confirm the tragic passing of Kyren Lacy. First and foremost, we ask that the public and the media give his family the space and time they need to grieve this unimaginable loss in peace.

Kyren’s was scheduled to have his matter heard before a grand jury tomorrow wherein we were very confident the evidence, after being fully collected and reviewed, would lead to a declination of charges.

From the very beginning, this so-called investigation took on the appearance of an overzealous, targeted effort—what can only be described as a witch hunt—fueled by who Kyren was and the public profile he carried. The decision by the investigating agency to charge him at all, in our view, was not only unjustified, it was disturbing. It’s imperative to understand the Lafourche Parish District Attorney, to this day, has not formally charged Kyren.

Kyren was a young man with immense promise, and he was crushed under the weight of an irresponsible and prejudiced process. The negative barrage on social media, the circulation of his mugshot by nearly every news outlet rather than a standard photo, the recent civil lawsuit filed against him that named another defendant who mysteriously wasn’t charged with a crime, only him, and the overall tone of coverage painted a deeply biased picture before he ever had the chance to defend himself. There was never a presumption of innocence which was exemplified by the NFL pulling his draft card over mere accusations without affording him the slightest chance to defend himself. The pressure and perception likely became unbearable.

Let us be absolutely clear: This is far from over. We will be demanding a full and transparent review of how this investigation was conducted and why. Those responsible for this gross miscarriage of justice must and will be held accountable.

In the meantime, we again urge everyone to respect the Lacy family’s privacy and allow them the dignity to mourn the loss of their beloved son.

Who Was Kyren Lacy?

Born in Thibodaux, Louisiana, on December 27, 2000, Kyren Lacy, 24, passed away in Houston, Texas, on April 12, 2025.

He was a wide receiver in American football. He was a member of the LSU Tigers and Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns while playing collegiate football.

He weighs 230 pounds (104 kilograms) and stands 6 feet 2 inches (1.88 meters) tall.

He went to high school in Thibodaux. He caught 54 passes for 864 yards and 18 touchdowns as a senior. As a three-star prospect, he turned down offers from Houston, Louisiana–Monroe, Louisiana Tech, Miami, and Virginia to play collegiate football at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, where he was ranked as the 10th wide receiver in Louisiana for the 2020 class.

In 2020, Lacy participated in 11 games as a true freshman at Louisiana, hauling in 28 passes for 364 yards and four touchdowns.

He caught 22 passes for 304 yards and six touchdowns in 13 games in 2021. He transferred to Louisiana State University (LSU) following the season.

In his debut season at LSU in 2022, he caught 24 passes for 268 yards and started two of 14 games. Lacy started 10 of 13 games and recorded 30 receptions for 558 yards and seven touchdowns, ranking third among receivers on the LSU depth chart behind Brian Thomas Jr. and Malik Nabers.

He was the top receiver when he returned to LSU for the 2024 campaign. He submitted his 2025 NFL draft declaration on December 19.

While in Houston, Texas, on the evening of April 12, 2025, Lacy passed away. Two days before a grand jury was scheduled to hear his case.
