Authorities said the shooter was identified as Phoenix Ikner, 20, the son of a Leon County Sheriff’s Office deputy.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Two people were killed and six people were hospitalized after a gunman opened fire on the Florida State University campus just before noon Thursday, authorities said.

Florida State University Police Chief Jason Trumbower said that at approximately 11:50 a.m., a gunman, a current FSU student, opened fire, shooting multiple people near the campus’ student union.

Trumbower said the two people killed were not students. The City of Tallahassee Police Department (TPD) said Thursday night that the victims killed were two adult men.

A Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare spokesperson confirmed that one person was in critical condition and five others were in serious condition following the shooting on FSU’s campus. The five were taken to the hospital from the scene with gunshot wounds, officials said. The Tallahassee Police Department said the sixth person was injured running away from the scene.

Around 8:30 p.m. Thursday, hospital officials said all the victims were in fair condition.

FSU police responded immediately, engaged, neutralized and apprehended the shooter, who has been identified as Phoenix Ikner, 20. Police said Ikner was also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“Sadly, as a result of this shooting, two adult males were killed, and five other victims were injured by gunfire,” Tallahassee Police Department Chief Lawrence Revell said in an update Thursday night. “An eighth person was injured while attempting to run away from the shooting. The suspect, 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner, remains hospitalized with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.”

Ikner is the son of a Leon County Sheriff’s Office deputy, Sheriff Walt McNeil said. He is the son of Deputy Jessica Ikner. LCSO says she has been with the force for 18 years.

LCSO said Jessica Ikner left a service weapon unattended, and that gun was found at the scene.

Property records show that Phoenix Ikner lives with his mother and father in Tallahassee.

McNeil called the shooting tragic and offered support to FSU families.

“This is obviously a heinous crime, our deepest condolences go out to the FSU family, the families of the students that are here,” McNeil said. “We understand that you all have been devastated because of this person’s actions.”

FSU issued an alert to students Thursday, the first being at 12:02 p.m., saying an active shooter was reported in the area of the university’s student union.

Students are asked to avoid the Student Union, Bellamy Building, HCB Classroom Building, Rovetta A&B, Moore Auditorium, Shaw, Pepper, Hecht House and Carraway as they are still considered an active crime scene.

FSU officials canceled all classes, university events and business operations through Friday, and athletic events in Tallahassee have been canceled throughout the weekend.

FSU school officials said students who need assistance can go to Donald L. Tucker Civic Center, where the university is offering counseling, health care and other support services.
